Statistical-Uncertainty-Driven Selection of Evaluation Frequency for Time-Dependent Sensing Calibration: A Demonstration with KAGRA Data

Accurate calibration of the gravitational-wave strain h(t) is essential for both detection and astrophysical inference. In operating detectors, slow temporal variations in the sensing response are tracked using calibration lines, but practical constraints can prevent those lines from being injected at frequencies that are favorable for precise estimation of sensing-side parameters. We present a statistical framework for preselecting evaluation frequencies under such constraints. We apply this framework to KAGRA data from the first part of the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Observing Run, for which the nominal cavity-pole frequency was about 18 Hz, while the sensing-side calibration line used in practice was injected at 32.7 Hz. For each candidate evaluation frequency, we construct the sensing function, quantify its segment-wise statistical uncertainty from empirical percentiles of the sample distribution, and rank the candidates using a score that combines the interval widths of the amplitude and phase. When a 1% amplitude interval width and a 1 degree phase interval width are weighted equally, 244 Hz is selected in all 4096 s analysis segments throughout the analyzed period. Relative to the reference frequency of 32.7 Hz, the amplitude interval width is reduced to about one quarter over a broad frequency range, while the phase interval width remains broadly comparable. We also assess the discrepancy introduced by frequency translation separately. These results suggest that the proposed method provides a useful statistical preselection framework for evaluation frequencies under practical operational constraints.

Statistical Estimation and Correction of Model-Measurement Bias in Time-Dependent Correction Factors of KAGRA

Calibration of gravitational-wave detectors reconstructs the strain h(t) from the detector output, and bias and uncertainty in this reconstruction directly affect downstream analyses. In ground-based interferometers, time-dependent correction factors (TDCFs) are estimated from calibration lines to track temporal variations of the detector response, while the underlying model parameters are periodically updated using broadband swept-sine calibration measurements (SSCMs). However, if a model-measurement bias exists between the measured transfer function and the reference model, the TDCFs inferred from calibration lines can introduce a systematic deviation into the reconstructed strain. We propose a statistical framework to estimate and correct this bias using repeated measurement-to-model ratios at the calibration-line frequencies. The bias correction factors are estimated with a rolling random-effects model based on restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and incorporated into the TDCF estimation, with their uncertainty propagated to the reconstructed response. Applying the method to KAGRA O4c data, we find that the uncorrected response shows deviations of up to approximately 7% in magnitude and 5 degrees in phase relative to the SSCM-based reference in representative examples. The correction reduces these deviations, with a modest increase in the propagated uncertainty due to the included correction-factor uncertainty. This framework provides a practical way to combine broadband reference models with calibration-line-based tracking when model-measurement bias is present.

Probing Pion Valence Quark Distribution with Beam-charge Asymmetry of Pion-induced $J/ψ$ Production

We consider the beam-charge asymmetry of the $J/ψ$ production cross sections in $π^-$- versus $π^+$-induced reactions on proton or nuclear targets. We show that the $J/ψ$ production cross section difference between $π^-$ and $π^+$ beams impinging on a proton target has a positive sign with a magnitude proportional to the product of pion's valence quark distribution, $V_π$, and proton's up and down valence quark distribution difference, $u^V - d^V$. The existing $J/ψ$ production data for $π^- + p$ and $π^+ + p$ at 39.5 and 200 GeV/c are consistent with the expected positive beam-charge asymmetry. The magnitude of the asymmetry is compared with calculations performed within two theoretical frameworks, the Color Evaporation Model (CEM) and the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) formalism. We also examine the beam-charge dependence for pion-induced $J/ψ$ production cross sections measured on the neutron-rich platinum target, and find good agreement between the data and theory for both the negative sign and the magnitude of the beam-charge asymmetry. The comparison between data and theoretical calculations for both proton and platinum targets suggests that the beam-charge asymmetry in pion-induced $J/ψ$ production is a viable method of accessing the valence quark distribution of the pion.

Photon Calibration Performance of KAGRA during the 4th Joint Observing Run (O4)

KAGRA is a kilometer-scale cryogenic gravitational-wave (GW) detector in Japan. It joined the 4th joint observing run (O4) in May 2023 in collaboration with the Laser Interferometer GW Observatory (LIGO) in the USA, and Virgo in Italy. After one month of observations, KAGRA entered a break period to enhance its sensitivity to GWs, and it is planned to rejoin O4 before its scheduled end in October 2025. To accurately recover the information encoded in the GW signals, it is essential to properly calibrate the observed signals. We employ a photon calibration (Pcal) system as a reference signal injector to calibrate the output signals obtained from the telescope. In ideal future conditions, the uncertainty in Pcal could dominate the uncertainty in the observed data. In this paper, we present the methods used to estimate the uncertainty in the Pcal systems employed during KAGRA O4 and report an estimated system uncertainty of 0.79%, which is three times lower than the uncertainty achieved in the previous 3rd joint observing run (O3) in 2020. Additionally, we investigate the uncertainty in the Pcal laser power sensors, which had the highest impact on the Pcal uncertainty, and estimate the beam positions on the KAGRA main mirror, which had the second highest impact. The Pcal systems in KAGRA are the first fully functional calibration systems for a cryogenic GW telescope. To avoid interference with the KAGRA cryogenic systems, the Pcal systems incorporate unique features regarding their placement and the use of telephoto cameras, which can capture images of the mirror surface at almost normal incidence. As future GW telescopes, such as the Einstein Telescope, are expected to adopt cryogenic techniques, the performance of the KAGRA Pcal systems can serve as a valuable reference.

Constraining kaon PDFs from Drell-Yan and $J/ψ$ production

The kaon parton distribution functions (PDFs) are poorly known due to paucity of kaon-induced Drell-Yan data. Nevertheless, these Drell-Yan data suggest a softer valence $u$ quark distribution of kaon than that of pion. We discuss the opportunity to constrain kaon PDFs utilizing existing kaon-induced $J/ψ$ production data. We compare the $K^- / π^-$ and $K^+ / π^+$ cross-section ratio data with calculations based on two global-fit parametrizations and two recent theoretical predictions for the kaon and pion PDFs, and test the results with two quarkonium production models. The $K^- / π^-$ cross-section ratio for $J/ψ$ production provides independent evidence of different valence quark distributions in pion and kaon. The $K^+ / π^+$ $J/ψ$ data are found to be sensitive to the gluon distribution in kaon. We show that these $J/ψ$ production data provide valuable constraints for evaluating the adequacy of currently available sets of kaon PDFs.

Pion PDFs confronted by Fixed-Target Charmonium Production

The pion, as the Goldstone boson of the strong interaction, is the lightest QCD bound state and responsible for the long-range nucleon-nucleon interaction inside the nucleus. Our knowledge on the pion partonic structure is limited by the existing Drell-Yan data which are primarily sensitive to the pion valence-quark distributions. The recent progress of global analysis of pion's parton distribution functions (PDFs) utilizing various experimental approaches are introduced. From comparisons between the pion-induced $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ production data with theoretical calculations using the CEM and NRQCD models, we show how these charmonium production data could provide useful constraints on the pion PDFs.

Fixed-target charmonium production and pion parton distributions

We investigate how charmonium hadroproduction at fixed-target energies can be used to constrain the gluon distribution in pions. Using nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) formulation, the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ cross sections as a function of longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$ from pions and protons colliding with light targets, as well as the $ψ(2S)$ to $J/ψ$ cross section ratios, are included in the analysis. The color-octet long-distance matrix elements are found to have a pronounced dependence on the pion parton distribution functions (PDFs). This study shows that the $x_F$ differential cross sections of pion-induced charmonium production impose strong constraints on the pion's quark and gluon PDFs. In particular, the pion PDFs with larger gluon densities provide a significantly better description of the data. It is also found that the production of the $ψ(2S)$ state is associated with a larger quark-antiquark contribution, compared with $J/ψ$.

NRQCD analysis of charmonium production with pion and proton beams at fixed-target energies

We present an analysis of hadroproduction of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ at fixed-target energies in the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). Using both pion- and proton-induced data, a new determination of the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) is obtained. Compared with previous results, the contributions from the $q \bar{q}$ and color-octet processes are significantly enhanced, especially at lower energies. A good agreement between the pion-induced $J/ψ$ production data and NRQCD calculations using the newly obtained LDMEs is achieved. We find that the pion-induced charmonium production data are sensitive to the gluon density of pions, and favor pion PDFs with relatively large gluon contents at large $x$.

Constraining gluon density of pions at large $x$ by pion-induced $J/ψ$ production

The gluon distributions of the pion obtained from various global fits exhibit large variations among them. Within the framework of the color evaporation model, we show that the existing pion-induced $J/ψ$ production data, usually not included in the global fits, can impose useful additional constraints on the pion parton distribution functions (PDFs). In particular, these data can probe the pion's gluon densities at large $x$. Existing pion-induced $J/ψ$ data covering a broad range of beam momenta are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations using various sets of pion PDFs. It is found that $J/ψ$ data measured at forward rapidity and at sufficiently high beam momentum are sensitive to the large-$x$ gluon distribution of pions. The current $J/ψ$ data favor the Sutton-Martin-Roberts-Stirling and Gluck-Reya-Vogt pion PDFs, containing significant gluon content at large $x$.

Extraction of gluon distributions from structure functions at small x in holographic QCD

We investigate the nucleon and pion gluon distribution functions in the framework of holographic QCD, focusing on the small Bjorken x region. Based on an approximate relation, the gluon distributions are extracted from structure functions of the unpolarized deep inelastic scattering which can be calculated with a holographic QCD model, assuming the Pomeron exchange. All the adjustable parameters of the model are determined with the HERA data of the proton structure functions. We explicitly show that the extracted proton gluon distribution is consistent with results of the recent global QCD analysis. The structure functions of the pion can be computed without any additional parameter, which enables us to predict its gluon distribution also. We find that the resulting pion gluon density is smaller than the proton's, and agrees with the recent global QCD analysis result within the uncertainties.

Meson cloud effects on kaon quark distribution functions and the SU(3) flavor symmetry

We present our analysis on the valence quark distribution functions of the $K^{+}$ meson, $v^{K (u)} (x, Q^2)$ and $v^{K (\bar{s})} (x, Q^2)$, taking into account the meson cloud effects in the framework of the chiral constituent quark model. Assuming appropriate bare quark distribution functions at the initial scale, evaluating the Goldstone boson dressing corrections with the model, and performing the QCD evolution, one can obtain the realistic dressed distributions at a certain scale. The phenomenologically satisfactory valence quark distribution of the pion was obtained in the previous study and there are available experimental data of the valence $u$ quark distribution ratio $v^{K(u)} (x, Q^2) / v^{π(u)} (x, Q^2)$, which enable us to obtain the kaon quark distribution functions. Besides presenting the resulting dressed distributions, we also show how the meson cloud effects affect the bare distributions in detail. A striking result is that the observed size of the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking is considerably smaller than those seen in the preceding works based on other approaches.

Kaon quark distribution functions in the chiral constituent quark model

We investigate the valence $u$ and $\bar{s}$ quark distribution functions of the $K^+$ meson, $v^{K(u)}(x,Q^2)$ and $v^{K(\bar{s})}(x,Q^2)$, in the framework of the chiral constituent quark model. We judiciously choose the bare distributions at the initial scale to generate the dressed distributions at the higher scale, considering the meson cloud effects and the QCD evolution, which agree with the phenomenologically satisfactory valence quark distribution of the pion and the experimental data of the ratio $v^{K(u)}(x,Q^2)/v^{π(u)}(x,Q^2)$. We show how the meson cloud effects affect the bare distribution functions in detail. We find that a smaller $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry breaking effect is observed, compared with results of the preceding studies based on other approaches.

Valence Quark and Gluon Distributions of Kaon from J/Psi Production

The only experimental information on the parton distribution of kaons was obtained from the scarce kaon-induced Drell-Yan cross section data. From these data, evidence for a valence $u$ quark distribution of kaon softer than that of pion was found. We study the feasibility to extract kaon's valence quark distribution via the existing kaon-induced J/psi production data. We compare the NA3 data on the K- / pi- and K+ / pi+ ratios for J/psi production on a platinum target with theoretical calculations based on the color-evaporation model. We show that the NA3 data on J/psi production provide an independent evidence for a valence $u$ quark distribution softer in kaon than in pion. The data also suggest different gluon distributions for kaon and pion.

Accessing proton generalized parton distributions and pion distribution amplitudes with the exclusive pion-induced Drell-Yan process at J-PARC

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encoding multidimensional information of hadron partonic structure appear as the building blocks in a factorized description of hard exclusive reactions. The nucleon GPDs have been accessed by deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production with lepton beam. A complementary probe with hadron beam is the exclusive pion-induced Drell-Yan process. In this paper, we discuss recent theoretical advances on describing this process in terms of nucleon GPDs and pion distribution amplitudes. Furthermore, we address the feasibility of measuring the exclusive pion-induced Drell-Yan process $π^- p \to μ^+μ^- n$ via a spectrometer at the High Momentum Beamline being constructed at J-PARC in Japan. Realization of such measurement at J-PARC will provide a new test of perturbative QCD descriptions of a novel class of hard exclusive reactions. It will also offer the possibility of experimentally accessing nucleon GPDs at large timelike virtuality.
