Prospects for improving the sensitivity of KAGRA gravitational wave detector

KAGRA is a new gravitational wave detector which aims to begin joint observation with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo from late 2019. Here, we present KAGRA's possible upgrade plans to improve the sensitivity in the decade ahead. Unlike other state-of-the-art detectors, KAGRA requires different investigations for the upgrade since it is the only detector which employs cryogenic cooling of the test mass mirrors. In this paper, investigations on the upgrade plans which can be realized by changing the input laser power, increasing the mirror mass, and injecting frequency dependent squeezed vacuum are presented. We show how each upgrade affects to the detector frequency bands and also discuss impacts on gravitational-wave science. We then propose an effective progression of upgrades based on technical feasibility and scientific scenarios.

Comparison of various methods to extract ringdown frequency from gravitational wave data

The ringdown part of gravitational waves in the final stage of merger of compact objects tells us the nature of strong gravity which can be used for testing the theories of gravity. The ringdown waveform, however, fades out in a very short time with a few cycles, and hence it is challenging for gravitational wave data analysis to extract the ringdown frequency and its damping time scale. We here propose to build up a suite of mock data of gravitational waves to compare the performance of various approaches developed to detect quasi-normal modes from a black hole. In this paper we present our initial results of comparisons of the following five methods; (1) plain matched filtering with ringdown part (MF-R) method, (2) matched filtering with both merger and ringdown parts (MF-MR) method, (3) Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT) method, (4) autoregressive modeling (AR) method, and (5) neural network (NN) method. After comparing their performance, we discuss our future projects.

CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING). III. Dynamical effect on molecular gas density and star formation in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4303

We present the results of $^{12}$CO($J$=1-0) and $^{13}$CO($J$=1-0) simultaneous mappings toward the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 4303 as a part of the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) project. Barred spiral galaxies often show lower star-formation efficiency (SFE) in their bar region compared to the spiral arms. In this paper, we examine the relation between the SFEs and the volume densities of molecular gas $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the eight different regions within the galactic disk with CO data combined with archival far-ultraviolet and 24 $μ$m data. We confirmed that SFE in the bar region is lower by 39% than that in the spiral arms. Moreover, velocity-alignment stacking analysis was performed for the spectra in the individual regions. The integrated intensity ratios of $^{12}$CO to $^{13}$CO ($R_{12/13}$) range from 10 to 17 as the results of stacking. Fixing a kinetic temperature of molecular gas, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ was derived from $R_{12/13}$ via non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) analysis. The density $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the bar is lower by 31-37% than that in the arms and there is a rather tight positive correlation between SFEs and $n(\rm{H}_2)$, with a correlation coefficient of $\sim 0.8$. Furthermore, we found a dependence of $n(\rm{H}_2)$ on the velocity dispersion of inter-molecular clouds ($ΔV/ \sin i$). Specifically, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ increases as $ΔV/ \sin i$ increases when $ΔV/ \sin i < 100$ km s$^{-1}$. On the other hand, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ decreases as $ΔV/ \sin i$ increases when $ΔV/ \sin i > 100$ km s$^{-1}$. These relations indicate that the variations of SFE could be caused by the volume densities of molecular gas, and the volume densities could be governed by the dynamical influence such as cloud-cloud collisions, shear and enhanced inner-cloud turbulence.

CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING): VI. Radial variations in star formation efficiency

We examined radial variations in molecular-gas based star formation efficiency (SFE), which is defined as star formation rate per unit molecular gas mass, for 80 galaxies selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies project (Sorai et al. 2019). The radial variations in SFE for individual galaxies are typically a factor of 2 -- 3, which suggests that SFE is nearly constant along galactocentric radius. We found the averaged SFE in 80 galaxies of $(1.69 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with Leroy et al. 2008 if we consider the contribution of helium to the molecular gas mass evaluation and the difference in the assumed initial mass function between two studies. We compared SFE among different morphological (i.e., SA, SAB, and SB) types, and found that SFE within the inner radii ($r/r_{25} < 0.3$, where $r_{25}$ is $B$-band isophotal radius at 25 mag arcsec$^{-2}$) of SB galaxies is slightly higher than that of SA and SAB galaxies. This trend can be partly explained by the dependence of SFE on global stellar mass, which probably relates to the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor through the metallicity. For two representative SB galaxies in our sample, NGC 3367 and NGC 7479, the ellipse of $r/r_{25}$ = 0.3 seems to cover not only the central region but also the inner part of the disk, mainly the bar. These two galaxies show higher SFE in the bar than in spiral arms. However, we found an opposite trend in NGC 4303; SFE is lower in the bar than in spiral arms, which is consistent with earlier studies (e.g., Momose et al. 2010). These results suggest diversity of star formation activities in the bar.

Stability analysis of black holes by the $S$-deformation method for coupled systems

We propose a simple method to prove the linear mode stability of a black hole when the perturbed field equations take the form of a system of coupled Schrödinger equations. The linear mode stability of the spacetime is guaranteed by the existence of an appropriate $S$-deformation. Such an $S$-deformation is related to the Riccati transformation of a solution to the Schrödinger system with zero energy. We apply this formalism to some examples and numerically study their stability.

"Flux-balance formulae" for extreme mass-ratio inspirals

The "flux-balance formulae" that determine the averaged evolution of energy, azimuthal angular momentum, and Carter constant in terms of the averaged asymptotic gravitational-wave fluxes for inspirals of small bodies into Kerr black holes were first derived about 15 years ago. However, this derivation is restricted to the case that the background Kerr geodesics are non-resonant (i.e., the radial and angular motions are always incommensurate), and excludes the resonant case that can be important for the radiative dynamics of extreme mass-ratio inspirals. We give here a new derivation of the flux formulae based on Hamiltonian dynamics of a self-forced particle motion, which is a valuable tool for analyzing self-force effects on generic (eccentric, inclined) bound orbits in the Kerr spacetime. This Hamiltonian derivation using action-angle variables is much simpler than the previous one, applies to resonant inspirals without any complication, and can be straightforwardly implemented by using analytical/numerical Teukolsky-based flux codes.

CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING). VII. Fourier decomposition of molecular gas velocity fields and bar pattern speed

The $^{12}$CO $(J=1\rightarrow0)$ velocity fields of a sample of 20 nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) legacy project of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, have been analyzed by Fourier decomposition to determine their basic kinematic properties, such as circular and noncircular velocities. On average, the investigated barred (SAB and SB) galaxies exhibit a ratio of noncircular to circular velocities of molecular gas larger by a factor of 1.5-2 than non-barred (SA) spiral galaxies at radii within the bar semimajor axis $a_\mathrm{b}$ at 1 kpc resolution, with a maximum at a radius of $R/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.3$. Residual velocity field images, created by subtracting model velocity fields from the data, reveal that this trend is caused by kpc-scale streaming motions of molecular gas in the bar region. Applying a new method based on radial velocity reversal, we estimated the corotation radius $R_\mathrm{CR}$ and bar pattern speed $Ω_\mathrm{b}$ in seven SAB and SB systems. The ratio of the corotation to bar radius is found to be in a range of $\mathcal{R}\equiv R_\mathrm{CR}/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.8\mathrm{-}1.6$, suggesting that intermediate (SBb-SBc), luminous barred spiral galaxies host fast and slow rotator bars. Tentative negative correlations are found for $Ω_\mathrm{b}$ vs. $a_\mathrm{b}$ and $Ω_\mathrm{b}$ vs. total stellar mass $M_\ast$, indicating that bars in massive disks are larger and rotate slower, possibly a consequence of angular momentum transfer. The kinematic properties of SAB and SB galaxies, derived from Fourier decomposition, are compared with recent numerical simulations that incorporate various rotation curve models and galaxy interactions.

Can all the infrared secular growth really be understood as increase of classical statistical variance?

It is known that in the theory of light scalar fields during inflation, correlation functions suffer from infrared (IR) divergences or large IR loop corrections, leading to the breakdown of perturbation theory. In order to understand the physical meaning of such IR enhancement, we investigate the stochastic properties of an effective equation of motion (EoM) for long-wavelength modes of a canonically normalized light scalar field $ϕ$ with a general sufficiently flat interaction potential on de Sitter background. Firstly, we provide an alternative refined derivation of the effective action for long-wavelength modes which leads to the effective EoM that correctly reproduces all the IR correlation functions in a good approximation at a late time, by integrating out short-wavelength modes. Next, under the assumption that one can neglect non-local correlations in the influence functional exceeding the coarse-graining scale, we show that the effective EoM for IR modes of the "average field" in Schwinger-Keldysh formalism $ϕ^<_c$ can be interpreted as a classical stochastic process in the present model.

Synergy between ground and space based gravitational wave detectors II: Localisation

We study the advantage of combining measurements from future ground and space based gravitational wave detectors in estimating the parameters of a black-hole binary coalescence. This is an extension of our previous work (PTEP 053E01 (2016)) where we used pattern averaged waveform to study non-spinning binaries. In this work we study the localisation and binary plane orientation, including the (non-precessing) spin of binaries. We focus on the third generation terrestrial detector `Einstein telescope' and a proposed space based detector `Deci-Hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory' (DECIGO). We consider two possible orbits for DECIGO, a heliocentric orbit and a Sun-synchronous geocentric orbit. We demonstrate that one can obtain order of magnitude improvement in the localisation from the space-ground combined measurements, even with a precursor-DECIGO mission (B-DECIGO). This is especially important for the future of gravitational wave astronomy as improving the localisation accuracy further improves our chances of identifying the host galaxies of these binary systems.

Spin-Precessing Black Hole Binaries in Dynamical Chern-Simons Gravity

Gravitational waves from spin-precessing binaries exhibit amplitude oscillations that provide an invaluable method to extract the spins of the inspiraling compact objects. The spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions that cause this effect are sensitive to the fundamental nature of gravity, which will allow us to constrain modified theories of gravity using gravitational wave observations of precessing binaries. We here consider precessing black hole binaries in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, an effective theory of gravity that enhances parity violating interactions. We model the black holes as modified point particles using effective field theory, and derive the spin-precession equations for a binary system by working within the post-Newtonian formalism. We find that the spin-spin and quadrupole-monopole interactions of General Relativity are modified due to an interaction between the scalar dipoles of the two black holes and the modified black hole quadrupole as a result of the violation of the no hair theorems. These modifications enter the precession equations at leading post-Newtonian order. We further show that these precession equations admit seven constants of motion when neglecting radiation reaction, with only the mass-weighted effective spin being modified from General Relativity. We discuss how these may be used to reduce the precession equations to quadrature and the possibility of constructing analytic Fourier domain waveforms for generic spin-precessing binaries in dCS gravity.

Robustness of the $S$-deformation method for black hole stability analysis

The $S$-deformation method is a useful way to show the linear mode stability of a black hole when the perturbed field equation takes the form of the Schrödinger equation. While previous works where many explicit examples are studied suggest that this method works well, general discussion is not given yet explicitly. In this paper, we show the existence of a regular $S$-deformation when a black hole spacetime is stable under some reasonable assumptions. This $S$-deformation is constructed from a solution of a differential equation. We also show that the boundary condition for the differential equation which corresponds to a regular $S$-deformation has a one-parameter degree of freedom with a finite range. This is the reason why any fine-tune technique is not needed to find $S$-deformation numerically.

Primordial Black Hole Scenario for the Gravitational-Wave Event GW150914

We point out that the gravitational-wave event GW150914 observed by the LIGO detectors can be explained by the coalescence of primordial black holes (PBHs). It is found that the expected PBH merger rate would exceed the rate estimated by the LIGO scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration if PBHs were the dominant component of dark matter, while it can be made compatible if PBHs constitute a fraction of dark matter. Intriguingly, the abundance of PBHs required to explain the suggested lower bound on the event rate, $> 2$ events ${\rm Gpc}^{-3} {\rm yr}^{-1}$, roughly coincides with the existing upper limit set by the nondetection of the cosmic microwave background spectral distortion. This implies that the proposed PBH scenario may be tested in the not-too-distant future.

Scalar Tops and Perturbed Quadrupoles: Probing Fundamental Physics with Spin-Precessing Binaries

Parity violation in the gravitational interaction has an important impact on fundamental observables and the evolution of the universe. We here investigate for the first time our ability to probe the parity violating nature of the gravitational interaction using gravitational waves from spin-precessing binaries. Focusing on dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, we derive the spin-precession equations, calculate the gravitational waves emitted by spin-precessing, quasi-circular black hole binaries and estimate the level to which the theory could be constrained with future gravitational wave observations.

Statistical nature of infrared dynamics on de Sitter background

In this study, we formulate a systematic way of deriving an effective equation of motion(EoM) for long wavelength modes of a massless scalar field with a general potential $V(ϕ)$ on de Sitter background, and investigate whether or not the effective EoM can be described as a classical stochastic process. Our formulation gives an extension of the usual stochastic formalism to including sub-leading secular growth coming from the nonlinearity of short wavelength modes. Applying our formalism to $λϕ^4$ theory, we explicitly derive an effective EoM which correctly recovers the next-to-leading secularly growing part at a late time, and show that this effective EoM can be seen as a classical stochastic process. Our extended stochastic formalism can describe all secularly growing terms which appear in all correlation functions with a specific operator ordering, which will not be a big drawback because the commutator of a light scalar field becomes negligible at large scales owing to the squeezing.

Primordial Black Holes - Perspectives in Gravitational Wave Astronomy -

This is a review article on the primordial black holes (PBHs), with particular focus on the massive ones ($\gtrsim 10^{15}{\rm g}$) which have not evaporated by the present epoch by the Hawking radiation. By the detections of gravitational waves by LIGO, we have gained a completely novel tool to observationally search for PBHs complementary to the electromagnetic waves. Based on the perspective that gravitational-wave astronomy will make a significant progress in the next decades, a purpose of this article is to give a comprehensive review covering a wide range of topics on PBHs. After discussing PBH formation as well as several inflation models leading to PBH production, we summarize various existing and future observational constraints. We then present topics on formation of PBH binaries, gravitational waves from PBH binaries, various observational tests of PBHs by using gravitational waves.

Hidden universality in the merger rate distribution in the primordial black hole scenario

It has been proposed that primordial black holes (PBHs) form binaries in the radiation dominated era. Once formed, some fraction of them may merge within the age of the Universe by gravitational radiation reaction. We investigate the merger rate of the PBH binaries when the PBHs have a distribution of masses around ${\cal O}(10) M_\odot$, which is a generalization of the previous studies where the PBHs are assumed to have the same mass. After deriving a formula for the merger time probability distribution in the PBH mass plane, we evaluate it under two different approximations. We identify a quantity constructed from the mass-distribution of the merger rate density per unit cosmic time and comoving volume $\mathcal{R}(m_1,m_2)$, $α= -{(m_1+m_2)}^2\partial^2 \ln\mathcal{R}/\partial m_1\partial m_2 $, which universally satisfies $0.97 \lesssim α\lesssim 1.05$ for all binary masses independently of the PBH mass function. This result suggests that the measurement of this quantity is useful for testing the PBH scenario.

Statistically Anisotropic Tensor Modes from Inflation

We consider the inflationary universe with a spectator scalar field coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field and calculate curvature perturbation and gravitational waves (GWs). We find that the sourced GWs can be larger than the one from vacuum fluctuation and they are statistically anisotropic as well as linearly polarized. The GW power spectrum acquires higher multipole moments as $\mathcal{P}_h \propto (1-\cos^2θ+\cos^4θ-\cos^6θ)$ irrespective of the model parameters.

Large gauge transformation, Soft theorem, and Infrared divergence in inflationary spacetime

It is widely known that the primordial curvature perturbation $ζ$ has several universal properties in the infrared (IR) such as the soft theorem, which is also known as the consistency relation, and the conservation in time. They are valid in rather general single clock models of inflation. It has been argued that these universal properties are deeply related to the large gauge transformations in inflationary spacetime. However, the invariance under the large gauge transformations is not sufficient to show these IR properties. In this paper, we show that the locality condition is crucial to show the consistency relation and the conservation of $ζ$. This argument also can apply to an interacting system with the inflaton and heavy fields which have arbitrary integer spins, including higher spin fields, which may be motivated from string theory. We will also show that the locality condition guarantees the cancellation of the IR divergences in a certain class of variables whose correlation functions resemble cosmologically observable quantities.
