Chiral Modulations in Curved Space I: Formalism

The goal of this paper is to present a formalism that allows to handle four-fermion effective theories at finite temperature and density in curved space. The formalism is based on the use of the effective action and zeta function regularization, supports the inclusion of inhomogeneous and anisotropic phases. One of the key points of the method is the use of a non-perturbative ansatz for the heat-kernel that returns the effective action in partially resummed form, providing a way to go beyond the approximations based on the Ginzburg-Landau expansion for the partition function. The effective action for the case of ultra-static Riemannian spacetimes with compact spatial section is discussed in general and a series representation, valid when the chemical potential satisfies a certain constraint, is derived. To see the formalism at work, we consider the case of static Einstein spaces at zero chemical potential. Although in this case we expect inhomogeneous phases to occur only as meta-stable states, the problem is complex enough and allows to illustrate how to implement numerical studies of inhomogeneous phases in curved space. Finally, we extend the formalism to include arbitrary chemical potentials and obtain the analytical continuation of the effective action in curved space.

IR divergence does not affect the gauge-invariant curvature perturbation

We address the infrared(IR) divergence problem during inflation that appears in the loop corrections to the primordial perturbations. In our previous paper, we claimed that, at least in single field models, the IR divergence is originating from the gauge artifact. Namely, diverging IR corrections should not appear in genuine gauge-invariant observables. We propose here one simple but explicit example of such gauge-invariant quantities. Then, we explicitly calculate such a quantity to find that the IR divergence is absent at the leading order in the slow-roll approximation for the usual scale invariant vacuum state. At the same time we notice that there is a subtle issue on the gauge-invariance in how to specify the initial vacuum state.

DECIGO/BBO as a probe to constrain alternative theories of gravity

We calculate how strongly one can constrain the alternative theories of gravity with deci-Hz gravitational wave interferometers such as DECIGO and BBO. Here we discuss Brans-Dicke theory and massive graviton theories as typical examples. We consider the inspiral of compact binaries composed of a neutron star (NS) and an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) for Brans-Dicke (BD) theory and those composed of a super massive black hole (SMBH) and a black hole (SMBH) for massive graviton theories. Using the restricted 2PN waveforms including spin effects and taking the spin precession into account, we perform the Monte Carlo simulations of $10^4$ binaries to estimate the determination accuracy of binary parameters including the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}$ and the graviton Compton length $λ_g$. Assuming a $(1.4, 10)M_{\odot}$ NS/BH binary of SNR=$\sqrt{200}$, the constraint on $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}$ is obtained as $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}>2.32\times 10^6$, which is 300 times stronger than the estimated constraint from LISA observation. Furthermore, we find that, due to the expected large merger rate of NS/BH binaries of $O(10^4)$ yr$^{-1}$, a statistical analysis yields $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}>3.77\times10^8$, which is 4 orders of magnitude stronger than the current strongest bound obtained from the solar system experiment. For massive graviton theories, assuming a $(10^6, 10^5)M_{\odot}$ BH/BH binary at 3Gpc, one can put a constraint $λ_g>3.35\times10^{20}$cm, on average. This is three orders of magnitude stronger than the one obtained from the solar system experiment. From these results, it is understood that DECIGO/BBO is a very powerful tool for constraining alternative theories of gravity, too.

Inevitable ghost and the degrees of freedom in f(R,G) gravity

The study of linear perturbation theory for general functions of the Ricci and Gauss-Bonnet scalars is done over an empty anisotropic universe, i.e. the Kasner-type background, in order to show that an anisotropic background in general has ghost degrees of freedom, which are absent on Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) backgrounds. The study of the scalar perturbation reveals that on this background the number of independent propagating degrees of freedom is four and reduces to three on FLRW backgrounds, as one mode becomes highly massive to decouple from the physical spectrum. When this mode remains physical, there is inevitably a ghost mode.

Constraining alternative theories of gravity by gravitational waves from precessing eccentric compact binaries with LISA

We calculate how strongly one can put constraints on alternative theories of gravity such as Brans-Dicke and massive graviton theories with LISA. We consider inspiral gravitational waves from a compact binary composed of a neutron star (NS) and an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory and that composed of 2 super massive black holes (SMBHs) in massive graviton theories. We use the restricted 2PN waveforms including the effects of spins. We also take both precession and eccentricity of the orbit into account. For simplicity, we set the fiducial value for the spin of one of the binary constituents to zero so that we can apply the approximation called \textit{simple precession}. We perform the Monte Carlo simulations of $10^4$ binaries, estimating the determination accuracy of binary parameters including the BD parameter $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}$ and the Compton wavelength of graviton $λ_g$ for each binary using the Fisher matrix method. We find that including both the spin-spin coupling $σ$ and the eccentricity $e$ into the binary parameters reduces the determination accuracy by an order of magnitude for the Brans-Dicke case, whilst it has less influence on massive graviton theories. On the other hand, including precession enhances the constraint on $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}$ only 20$%$ but it increases the constraint on $λ_g$ by an order of magnitude. Using a $(1.4+1000)M_{\odot}$ NS/BH binary of SNR=$\sqrt{200}$, one can put a constraint $ω_{\mathrm{BD}}>6944$, whilst using a $(10^7+10^6)M_{\odot}$ BH/BH binary at 3Gpc, one can put $λ_g>3.06\times10^{21}$cm, on average. The latter is 4 orders of magnitude stronger than the one obtained from the solar system experiment. These results indicate that the effects of precession and eccentricity must be taken carefully in the parameter estimation analysis.

Use of delta N formalism - Difficulties in generating large local-type non-Gaussianity during inflation -

We discuss generation of non-Gaussianity in density perturbation through the super-horizon evolution during inflation by using the so-called $δN$ formalism. We first provide a general formula for the non-linearity parameter generated during inflation. We find that it is proportional to the slow-roll parameters, multiplied by the model dependent factors that may enhance the non-gaussianity to the observable ranges. Then we discuss three typical examples to illustrate how difficult to generate sizable non-Gaussianity through the super-horizon evolution. First example is the double inflation model, which shows that temporal violation of slow roll conditions is not enough for the generation of non-Gaussianity. Second example is the ordinary hybrid inflation model, which illustrates the importance of taking into account perturbations on small scales. Finally, we discuss Kadota-Stewart model. This model gives an example in which we have to choose rather unnatural initial conditions even if large non-Gaussianity can be generated.

Casimir Effect on the brane

We consider the Casimir effect between two parallel plates localized on a brane. In order to properly compute the contribution to the Casimir energy due to any higher dimensional field, it is necessary to take into account the localization properties of the KK modes. When no massless mode appears in the spectrum, the correction to the Casimir energy is exponentially suppressed. When a massless mode is present in the spectrum, the correction to the Casimir energy can be, in principle, sizeable. Here we illustrate a new method to compute the correction to the Casimir energy between two parallel plates, localized on a brane. The Casimir energy is suppressed by two factors: at lowest order in $\varepsilon$, the correction comes entirely from the massive mode and turns out to be exponentially suppressed; the next-to-leading order correction in $\varepsilon$ follows, instead, a power-law suppression due to the small wave function overlap of the zero-mode with matter confined on the visible brane. Generic comments on the constraints on new physics that may arise from Casimir force experiments are also made.

Quantum Back Reaction to asymptotically AdS Black Holes

We analyze the effects of the back reaction due to a conformal field theory (CFT) on a black hole spacetime with negative cosmological constant. We study the geometry numerically obtained by taking into account the energy momentum tensor of CFT approximated by a radiation fluid. We find a sequence of configurations without a horizon in thermal equilibrium (CFT stars), followed by a sequence of configurations with a horizon. We discuss the thermodynamic properties of the system and how back reaction effects alter the space-time structure. We also provide an interpretation of the above sequence of solutions in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The dual five-dimensional description is given by the Karch-Randall model, in which a sequence of five-dimensional floating black holes followed by a sequence of brane localized black holes correspond to the above solutions.

Floating Black Hole in the Karch-Randall Model and its Holographic Dual

To investigate the holography in the Karch-Randall (KR) braneworld model, we construct time-symmetric initial data of black holes floating in the bulk, and compare it with its holographic dual, which is described by four-dimensional self-gravitating quantum field theory in asymptotically AdS_4 spacetime. We also give a definition and an explicit formula of mass in the KR model extending the definition by Abbott and Deser for asymptotically AdS spacetime. We obtain supporting evidence for the holography in the KR model such as good agreements of phase structures and characteristic values between the two theories, and find clues that the Hawking-Page transition of the four-dimensional quantum theory in a microcanonical ensemble is holographically dual to a transition in the bulk black hole configuration.

Influence on observation from IR divergence during inflation -- Multi field inflation --

We propose one way to regularize the fluctuations generated during inflation, whose infrared (IR) corrections diverge logarithmically. In the case of a single field inflation model, recently, we proposed one solution to the IR divergence problem. There, we introduced new perturbative variables which better mimic actual observable fluctuations, and proved the regularity of correlation functions with respect to these variables. In this paper, we extend our previous discussions to a multi field inflation model. We show that, as long as we consider the case that the non-linear interaction acts for a finite duration, observable fluctuations are free from IR divergences in the multi field model, too. In contrast to the single field model, to discuss observables, we need to take into account the effects of quantum decoherence which pick up a unique history of the universe from various possibilities contained in initial quantum state set naturally in the early stage of the universe.

Lorentz boost and non-Gaussianity in multi-field DBI-inflation

We show that higher-order actions for cosmological perturbations in the multi-field DBI-inflation model are obtained by a Lorentz boost from the rest frame of the brane to the frame where the brane is moving. We confirm that this simple method provides the same third- and fourth- order actions at leading order in slow-roll and in the small sound speed limit as those obtained by the usual ADM formalism. As an application, we compute the leading order connected four-point function of the primordial curvature perturbation coming from the intrinsic fourth-order contact interaction in the multi-field DBI-inflation model. At the third order, the interaction Hamiltonian arises purely by the boost from the second-order action in the rest frame of the brane. The boost acts on the adiabatic and entropy modes in the same way thus there exists a symmetry between the adiabatic and entropy modes. But at fourth order this symmetry is broken due to the intrinsic fourth-order action in the rest frame and the difference between the Lagrangian and the interaction Hamiltonian. Therefore, contrary to the three-point function, the momentum dependence of the purely adiabatic component and the components including the entropic contributions are different in the four-point function. This suggests that the trispectrum can distinguish the multi-field DBI-inflation model from the single field DBI-inflation model.

Influence on observation from IR divergence during inflation -- Single field inflation --

A naive computation of the correlation functions of fluctuations generated during inflation suffers from logarithmic divergences in the infrared (IR) limit. In this paper, we propose one way to solve this IR divergence problem in the single-field inflation model. The key observation is that the variables that are commonly used in describing fluctuations are influenced by what we cannot observe. Introducing a new perturbation variable which mimics what we actually observe, we propose a new prescription to solve the time evolution of perturbation in which this leakage of information from the unobservable region of the universe is shut off. We give a proof that IR divergences are absent as long as we follow this new scheme. We also show that the secular growth of the amplitude of perturbation is also suppressed, at least, unless very higher order perturbation is discussed.

On the full trispectrum in single field DBI-inflation

We compute the tree-level connected four-point function of the primordial curvature perturbation for a fairly general minimally coupled single field inflationary model, where the inflaton's Lagrangian is a general function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. This model includes K-inflation and DBI-inflation as particular cases. We show that, at the leading order in the slow-roll expansion and in the small sound speed limit, there are two important tree-level diagrams for the trispectrum. One is a diagram where a scalar mode is exchanged and the other is a diagram where the interaction occurs at a point, i.e. a contact interaction diagram. The scalar exchange contribution is comparable to the contact interaction contribution. For the DBI-inflation model, in the so-called equilateral configuration, the scalar exchange trispectrum is maximized when the angles between the four momentum vectors are equal and in this case the amplitude of the trispectrum from the scalar exchange is one order of magnitude higher than the contact interaction trispectrum.

Spin Polarization Effects in Micro Black Hole Evaporation

We consider the evaporation of rotating micro black holes produced in highly energetic particle collisions, taking into account the polarization due to the coupling between the spin of the emitted particles and the angular momentum of the black hole. The effect of rotation shows up in the helicity dependent angular distribution significantly. By using this effect, there is a possibility to determine the axis of rotation for each black hole formed, suggesting a way to improve the statistics. Deviation from thermal spectrum is also a signature of rotation. This deviation is due to the fact that rapidly rotating holes have an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$ significantly higher than the Hawking temperature $T_H$. The deformation of the spectral shape becomes evident only for very rapidly rotating cases. We show that, since the spectrum follows a blackbody profile with an effective temperature, it is difficult to determine both the number of extra-dimensions and the rotation parameter from the energy spectrum alone. We argue that the helicity dependent angular distribution may provide a way to resolve this degeneracy. We illustrate the above results for the case of fermions.

Implication of Classical Black Hole Evaporation Conjecture to Floating Black Holes

In Randall-Sundrum single-brane (RS-II) model, it was conjectured that there is no static large black hole localized on the brane based on adS/CFT correspondence. Here we consider the phase diagram of black objects in the models extended from the RS-II model. We propose a scenario for the phase diagram consistent with the classical black hole evaporation conjecture. The proposed scenario indicates the existence of a rich variety of the families of black objects.

Efficient diagrammatic computation method for higher order correlation functions of local type primordial curvature perturbations

We present a new efficient method for computing the non-linearity parameters of the higher order correlation functions of local type curvature perturbations in inflation models having a $\cal N$-component scalar field, focusing on the non-Gaussianity generated during the evolution on super-horizon scales. In contrast to the naive expectation that the number of operations necessary to compute the $n$-point functions is proportional to ${\cal N}^n$, it grows only linearly in ${\cal N}$ in our formalism. Hence, our formalism is particularly powerful for the inflation models composed of a multi-component scalar field. Explicit formulas obtained by applying our method are provided for $n=2,3,4$ and 5, which correspond to power-, bi-, tri- and {\it quad}-spectra, respectively. We also discuss how many parameters we need to parameterize the amplitude and the shape of the higher order correlation functions of local type.

Particle production in models with helicity-0 graviton ghost in de Sitter spacetime

We revisit the problem of the helicity-0 ghost mode of massive graviton in the de Sitter background. In general, the presence of a ghost particle, which has negative energy, drives the vacuum to be unstable through pair production of ghost particles and ordinary particles. In the case that the vacuum state preserves the de Sitter invariance, the number density created by the pair production inevitably diverges due to unsuppressed ultra-violet(UV) contributions. In such cases one can immediately conclude that the model is not viable. However, in the massive gravity theory we cannot construct a vacuum state which respects the de Sitter invariance. Therefore the presence of a ghost does not immediately mean the breakdown of the model. Explicitly estimating the number density and the energy density of particles created by the pair production of two conformal scalar particles and one helicity-0 ghost graviton, we find that these densities both diverge. However, since models with helicity-0 ghost graviton have no de Sitter invariant vacuum state, it is rather natural to consider a UV cutoff scale in the three-dimensional momentum space. Then, even if we take the cutoff scale as large as the Planck scale, the created number density and energy density are well suppressed. In many models the cutoff scale is smaller than the Planck scale. In such models the created number density and the energy density are negligiblly small as long as only the physics below the cutoff scale is concerned.

Primordial perturbations and non-Gaussianities in DBI and general multi-field inflation

We study cosmological perturbations in general inflation models with multiple scalar fields and arbitrary kinetic terms, with special emphasis on the multi-field extension of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation. We compute the second-order action governing the dynamics of linear perturbations in the most general case. Specializing to DBI, we show that the adiabatic and entropy modes propagate with a {\it common} effective sound speed and are thus amplified at sound horizon crossing. In the small sound speed limit, we find that the amplitude of the entropy modes is much higher than that of the adiabatic modes. We also derive, in the general case, the third-order action which is useful for studying primordial non-Gaussianities generated during inflation. In the DBI case, we compute the dominant contributions to non-Gaussianities, which depend on both the adiabatic and entropy modes.
