Factorizations of linearized polynomials and extremal curves in odd characteristic

We give a complete recipe for constructing extremal van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves over finite fields of odd characteristic. The input data consist of a nonzero element of the base field together with a linear subspace satisfying a certain trace condition. This construction may be viewed as an odd-characteristic analogue of the one previously obtained by the authors in characteristic two.

Factorization of Additive Polynomials and van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves in characteristic 2

In our previous work, we gave a formula for the Frobenius eigenvalues of van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves in characteristic 2 by considering suitable quotients of the curve. Although the formula is explicit, it depends on many choices, which makes the formula complicated. In this article, we take a different approach using a factorization of additive polynomials, and prove a new formula. The resulting formula is simpler and is useful for explicit computations. As applications, we provide a method for constructing maximal and minimal van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves, and show that every such curve arises from this construction. We also compute various examples of van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves and study their periods.

The $L$-polynomials of van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves in characteristic $2$

The van der Geer--van der Vlugt curves form a class of Artin--Schreier coverings of the projective line over finite fields. We provide an explicit formula for their $L$-polynomials in characteristic $2$, expressed in terms of characters of maximal abelian subgroups of associated Heisenberg groups. For this purpose, we develop new methods specific to characteristic $2$ that exploit the structure of the Heisenberg groups and the geometry of Lang torsors for $W_2$. As an application, we construct examples of curves in this family attaining the Hasse--Weil bound.

Gauss--Heilbronn Sums and Coverings of Deligne--Lusztig Type Curves

We study exponential sums on Witt vectors, known as Gauss--Heilbronn sums, and the curves whose Frobenius traces realize these sums via a Deligne--Lusztig type construction. For 3-typical Witt vectors of length two, we analyze Gauss--Heilbronn sums, from which we fully determine the Frobenius slopes of the associated curves.

Mod $\ell$ Weil representations and Deligne--Lusztig inductions for unitary groups

We study the mod $\ell$ Weil representation of a finite unitary group and related Deligne--Lusztig inductions. In particular, we study their decomposition as representations of a symplectic group, and give a construction of a mod $\ell$ Howe correspondence for $(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n},\mathrm{O}_2^-)$ including the case where $p=2$.

Criteria of maximality and minimality of van der Geer-van der Vlugt curves

The van der Geer-van der Vlugt curves are Artin-Schreier coverings of the affine line defined by linearized polynomials over finite fields. We give several criteria for them to be maximal or minimal, i.e. attaining the upper or lower bound in the Hasse-Weil inequalities. We also study the $L$-polynomials of certain generalizations of van der Geer-van der Vlugt curves. As applications, we find several maximal (or minimal) curves among them. Our proof is based on an explicit formula of $L$-polynomials recently obtained by Takeuchi and the third author.

Local Galois representations of Swan conductor one

We construct the local Galois representations over the complex field whose Swan conductors are one by using etale cohomology of Artin-Schreier sheaves on affine lines over finite fields. Then, we study the Galois representations, and give an explicit description of the local Langlands correspondences for simple supercuspidal representations. We discuss also a more natural realization of the Galois representations in the etale cohomology of Artin-Schreier varieties.

Local Galois representations associated to additive polynomials

For an additive polynomial and a positive integer, we define an irreducible smooth representation of a Weil group of a non-archimedean local field. We study several invariants of this representation. We deduce a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be primitive.

Gauss sums and Van der Geer--Van der Vlugt curves

We study Van der Geer--Van der Vlugt curves in a ramification-theoretic view point. We give explicit formulae on L-polynomials of these curves. As a result, we show that these curves are supersingular and give sufficient conditions for these curves to be maximal or minimal.

Geometric construction of Heisenberg-Weil representations for finite unitary groups and Howe correspondences

We give a geometric construction of the Heisenberg-Weil representation of a finite unitary group by the middle étale cohomology of an algebraic variety over a finite field, whose rational points give a unitary Heisenberg group. Using also a Frobenius action, we give a geometric realization of the Howe correspondence for $(\mathit{Sp}_{2n},O_2^-)$ over any finite field including characteristic two. As an application, we show that unipotency is preserved under the Howe correspondence.

Affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and simple supercuspidal representations II: wild case

We construct a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and their formal models such that the middle cohomology of their reductions realizes the local Langlands correspondence and the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for the simple supercuspidal representations. The reductions of the formal models are isomorphic to the perfections of some Artin-Schreier varieties, whose cohomology realizes primitive Galois representations. We show also the Tate conjecture for Artin-Schreier varieties associated to quadratic forms.

Affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and simple supercuspidal representations I: tame case

We construct a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and their formal models such that the middle cohomology of the reductions of the formal models realizes the local Langlands correspondence and the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for simple supercuspidal representations in the case where the dimension of Galois representations is prime to the residue characteristic. The reductions of the formal models are isomorphic to the perfections of Artin-Schreier varieties associated to quadratic forms.

Stable models of Lubin-Tate curves with level three

We construct a stable formal model of a Lubin-Tate curve with level three, and study the action of a Weil group and a division algebra on its stable reduction. Further, we study a structure of cohomology of the Lubin-Tate curve. Our study is purely local and includes the case where the characteristic of the residue field of a local field is two.

On non-abelian Lubin-Tate theory for GL(2) in the odd equal characteristic case

In this paper, we define a family of affinoids in the tubular neighborhoods of CM points in the Lubin-Tate curve with suitable level structures, and compute the reductions of them in the equal characteristic case. By using etale cohomology theory of adic spaces due to Huber, we show that the cohomology of the reductions contributes to the cohomology of the Lubin-Tate curve. As an application, with the help of explicit descriptions of the local Langlands correspondence and the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence due to Bushnell-Henniart via the theory of types, we prove the non-abelian Lubin-Tate theory for GL(2) in the odd equal characteristic case in a purely local manner. Conversely, if we admit the non-abelian Lubin-Tate theory, we can recover the explicit descriptions of the two correspondences geometrically.

Cohomology of rigid curves with semi-stable coverings

We construct a semi-stable formal model of a wide open rigid curve with a semi-stable covering, and study the l-adic cohomology of the rigid curve. We describe the l-adic cohomology of the rigid curve using the l-adic cohomology of the irreducible components of a semi-stable reduction, and homology and cohomology of some graphs. We also prove the functoriality of the description for a finite flat morphism that is compatible with semi-stable coverings of wide open rigid curves.
