Penalty method with Crouzeix-Raviart approximation for the Stokes equations under slip boundary condition

The Stokes equations subject to non-homogeneous slip boundary conditions are considered in a smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N \, (N=2,3)$. We propose a finite element scheme based on the nonconforming P1/P0 approximation (Crouzeix-Raviart approximation) combined with a penalty formulation and with reduced-order numerical integration in order to address the essential boundary condition $u \cdot n_{\partialΩ} = g$ on $\partialΩ$. Because the original domain $Ω$ must be approximated by a polygonal (or polyhedral) domain $Ω_h$ before applying the finite element method, we need to take into account the errors owing to the discrepancy $Ω\neq Ω_h$, that is, the issues of domain perturbation. In particular, the approximation of $n_{\partialΩ}$ by $n_{\partialΩ_h}$ makes it non-trivial whether we have a discrete counterpart of a lifting theorem, i.e., right-continuous inverse of the normal trace operator $H^1(Ω)^N \to H^{1/2}(\partialΩ)$; $u \mapsto u\cdot n_{\partialΩ}$. In this paper we indeed prove such a discrete lifting theorem, taking advantage of the nonconforming approximation, and consequently we establish the error estimates $O(h^α+ ε)$ and $O(h^{2α} + ε)$ for the velocity in the $H^1$- and $L^2$-norms respectively, where $α= 1$ if $N=2$ and $α= 1/2$ if $N=3$. This improves the previous result [T. Kashiwabara et al., Numer. Math. 134 (2016), pp. 705--740] obtained for the conforming approximation in the sense that there appears no reciprocal of the penalty parameter $ε$ in the estimates.

Rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation for the primitive equations by scaled Navier-Stokes equations

Consider the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations as well as the primitive equations. It is shown that the horizontal velocity of the solution to the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations in a cylindrical domain of height $\varepsilon $ with initial data $u_0=(v_0,w_0)\in B^{2-2/p}_{q,p}$, $1/q+1/p\le 1$ if $q\ge 2$ and $4/3q+2/3p\le 1$ if $q\le 2$, converges as $\varepsilon \to 0$ with convergence rate $\mathcal{O} (\varepsilon )$ to the horizontal velocity of the solution to the primitive equations with initial data $v_0$ with respect to the maximal-$L^p$-$L^q$-regularity norm. Since the difference of the corresponding vertical velocities remains bounded with respect to that norm, the convergence result yields a rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation in the primitive equations in this setting. It generalizes in particular a result by Li and Titi for the $L^2$-$L^2$-setting. The approach presented here does not rely on second order energy estimates but on maximal $L^p$-$L^q$-estimates for the heat equation.

Maximum norm error estimates for the finite element approximation of parabolic problems on smooth domains

In this paper, we consider the finite element approximation for a parabolic problem on a smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with the inhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We emphasize that the domain can be non-convex in general. We implement the finite element method for this problem by constructing a family of polygonal or polyhedral domains $\{ Ω_h \}_h$ that approximate the original domain $Ω$. The main result of this study is the $L^\infty$-error estimate for this approximation. We shall show that the convergence rate is not optimal for higher order elements since the symmetric difference $Ω\bigtriangleup Ω_h$ is not empty in general. In order to address the effect of the symmetric difference of domains, we introduce the tubular neighborhood of the original boundary $\partialΩ$. We will also present a slightly new approach to establish the $L^\infty$-error estimate. Moreover, we present the smoothing property for the discrete parabolic semigroup and the spatially discretized maximal regularity as corollaries of the main result.

$L^\infty$- and $W^{1,\infty}$-error estimates of linear finite element method for Neumann boundary value problems in a smooth domain

Pointwise error analysis of the linear finite element approximation for $-Δu + u = f$ in $Ω$, $\partial_n u = τ$ on $\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb R^N$, is presented. We establish $O(h^2|\log h|)$ and $O(h)$ error bounds in the $L^\infty$- and $W^{1,\infty}$-norms respectively, by adopting the technique of regularized Green's functions combined with local $H^1$- and $L^2$-estimates in dyadic annuli. Since the computational domain $Ω_h$ is only polyhedral, one has to take into account non-conformity of the approximation caused by the discrepancy $Ω_h \neq Ω$. In particular, the so-called Galerkin orthogonality relation, utilized three times in the proof, does not exactly hold and involves domain perturbation terms (or boundary-skin terms), which need to be addressed carefully. A numerical example is provided to confirm the theoretical result.

The Hydrostatic Stokes Semigroup and Well-Posedness of the Primitive Equations on Spaces of Bounded Functions

Consider the $3$-d primitive equations in a layer domain $Ω=G \times (-h,0)$, $G=(0,1)^2$, subject to mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions at $z=-h$ and $z=0$, respectively, and the periodic lateral boundary condition. It is shown that this equation is globally, strongly well-posed for arbitrary large data of the form $a=a_1 + a_2$, where $a_1\in C(\overline{G};L^p(-h,0))$, $a_2\in L^{\infty}(G;L^p(-h,0))$ for $p>3$, and where $a_1$ is periodic in the horizontal variables and $a_2$ is sufficiently small. In particular, no differentiability condition on the data is assumed. The approach relies on $L^\infty_HL^p_z(Ω)$-estimates for terms of the form $t^{1/2} \lVert \partial_z e^{tA_{\overlineσ}}\mathbb{P}f \rVert_{L^\infty_H L^p_z(Ω)}\le C e^{tβ} \lVert f \rVert_{L^\infty_H L^p_z (Ω)}$ for $t>0$, where $e^{t A_{\overlineσ}}$ denotes the hydrostatic Stokes semigroup. The difficulty in proving estimates of this form is that the hydrostatic Helmholtz projection $\mathbb{P}$ fails to be bounded with respect to the $L^\infty$-norm. The global strong well-posedness result is then obtained by an iteration scheme, splitting the data into a smooth and a rough part and by combining a reference solution for smooth data with an evolution equation for the rough part.

Analyticity of solutions to the primitive equations

This article presents the maximal regularity approach to the primitive equations. It is proved that the $3D$ primitive equations on cylindrical domains admit a unique, global strong solution for initial data lying in the critical solonoidal Besov space $B^{2/p}_{pq}$ for $p,q\in (1,\infty)$ with $1/p+1/q \leq 1$. This solution regularize instantaneously and becomes even real analytic for $t>0$.

The Primitive Equations in the scaling invariant space $L^{\infty}(L^1)$

Consider the primitive equations on $\R^2\times (z_0,z_1)$ with initial data $a$ of the form $a=a_1+a_2$, where $a_1 \in BUC_σ(\R^2;L^1(z_0,z_1))$ and $a_2 \in L^\infty_σ(\R^2;L^1(z_0,z_1))$ and where $BUC_σ(L^1)$ and $L^\infty_σ(L^1)$ denote the space of all solenoidal, bounded uniformly continuous and all solenoidal, bounded functions on $\R^2$, respectively, which take values in $L^1(z_0,z_1)$. These spaces are scaling invariant and represent the anisotropic character of these equations. It is shown that, if $\|a_2\|_{L^\infty_σ(L^1)}$ is sufficiently small, then this set of equations has a unique, local, mild solution. If in addition $a$ is periodic in the horizontal variables, then this solution is a strong one and extends to a unique, global, strong solution. The primitive equations are thus strongly and globally well-posed for these data. The approach depends crucially on mapping properties of the hydrostatic Stokes semigroup in the $L^\infty(L^1)$-setting and can thus be seen as the counterpart of the classical iteration schemes for the Navier-Stokes equations for the situation of the primitive equations.

Global Strong $L^p$ Well-Posedness of the 3D Primitive Equations with Heat and Salinity Diffusion

Consider the full primitive equations, i.e. the three dimensional primitive equations coupled to the equation for temperature and salinity, and subject to outer forces. It is shown that this set of equations is globally strongly well-posed for arbitrary large initial data lying in certain interpolation spaces, which are explicitly characterized as subspaces of $H^{2/p,p}$, $1<p<\infty$, satisfying certain boundary conditions. In particular, global well-posedeness of the full primitive equations is obtained for initial data having less differentiability properties than $H^1$, hereby generalizing by result by Cao and Titi (Ann. of Math. (2) 166 (2007), no. 1, 245-267) to the case of non-smooth data. In addition, it is shown that the solutions are exponentially decaying provided the outer forces possess this property.

Strong Well-Posedness for a Class of Dynamic Outflow Boundary Conditions for Incompressible Newtonian Flows

Based on energy considerations, we derive a class of dynamic outflow boundary conditions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, containing the well-known convective boundary condition but incorporating also the stress at the outlet. As a key building block for the analysis of such problems, we consider the Stokes equations with such dynamic outflow boundary conditions in a halfspace and prove the existence of a strong solution in the appropriate Sobolev-Slobodeckij-setting with $L_p$ (in time and space) as the base space for the momentum balance. For non-vanishing stress contribution in the boundary condition, the problem is actually shown to have $L_p$-maximal regularity under the natural compatibility conditions. Aiming at an existence theory for problems in weakly singular domains, where different boundary conditions apply on different parts of the boundary such that these surfaces meet orthogonally, we also consider the prototype domain of a wedge with opening angle $\fracπ{2}$ and different combinations of boundary conditions: Navier-Slip with Dirichlet and Navier-Slip with the dynamic outflow boundary condition. Again, maximal regularity of the problem is obtained in the appropriate functional analytic setting and with the natural compatibility conditions.

Strong Time-Periodic Solutions to the 3D Primitive Equations subject to Arbitrary Large Forces

We show that the three-dimensional primitive equations admit a strong time-periodic solution of period $T>0$, provided the forcing term $f\in L^2(0,\mathcal T; L^2(Ω))$ is a time-periodic function of the same period. No restriction on the magnitude of $f$ is assumed. As a corollary, if, in particular, $f$ is time-independent, the corresponding solution is steady-state.

Global Strong Well-posedness of the Three Dimensional Primitive equations in $L^p$-spaces

In this article, an $L^p$-approach to the primitive equations is developed. In particular, it is shown that the three dimensional primitive equations admit a unique, global strong solution for all initial data $a \in [X_p,D(A_p)]_{1/p}$ provided $p \in [6/5,\infty)$. To this end, the hydrostatic Stokes operator $A_p$ defined on $X_p$, the subspace of $L^p$ associated with the hydrostatic Helmholtz projection, is introduced and investigated. Choosing $p$ large, one obtains global well-posedness of the primitive equations for strong solutions for initial data $a$ having less differentiability properties than $H^1$, hereby generalizing in particular a result by Cao and Titi (Ann. Math. 166 (2007), pp. 245-267) to the case of non-smooth initial data.

Penalty method with P1/P1 finite element approximation for the Stokes equations under slip boundary condition

We consider the P1/P1 or P1b/P1 finite element approximations to the Stokes equations in a bounded smooth domain subject to the slip boundary condition. A penalty method is applied to address the essential boundary condition $u\cdot n = g$ on $\partialΩ$, which avoids a variational crime and simultaneously facilitates the numerical implementation. We give $O(h^{1/2} + ε^{1/2} + h/ε^{1/2})$-error estimate for velocity and pressure in the energy norm, where $h$ and $ε$ denote the discretization parameter and the penalty parameter, respectively. In the two-dimensional case, it is improved to $O(h + ε^{1/2} + h^2/ε^{1/2})$ by applying reduced-order numerical integration to the penalty term. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical experiments.

On a strong solution of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations under slip or leak boundary conditions of friction type

Strong solutions of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations under non-linearized slip or leak boundary conditions are investigated. We show that the problems are formulated by a variational inequality of parabolic type, to which uniqueness is established. Using Galerkin's method and deriving a priori estimates, we prove global and local existence for 2D and 3D slip problems respectively. For leak problems, under no-leak assumption at $t=0$ we prove local existence in 2D and 3D cases. Compatibility conditions for initial states play a significant role in the estimates.

On a finite element approximation of the Stokes problem under leak or slip boundary conditions of friction type

A finite element approximation of the Stokes equations under a certain nonlinear boundary condition, namely, the slip or leak boundary condition of friction type, is considered. We propose an approximate problem formulated by a variational inequality, prove an existence and uniqueness result, present an error estimate, and discuss a numerical realization using an iterative Uzawa-type method. Several numerical examples are provided to support our theoretical results.
