Pressure effects on Dirac fermions in α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

We investigate the pressure effect on the layered Dirac fermion system, which is realized in quasi-two-dimensional organic compound α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3. The trajectory of the contact points is investigated using the tight-binding model with the transfer integrals determined by X-ray diffraction experiments. Vanishing of the Dirac fermion spectrum, opening of the gap, and pressure dependence of inter-layer magnetoresistance are discussed.

Enhanced Pairing Correlations near Oxygen Dopants in Cuprate Superconductors

Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism -- based on local screening effects -- by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO_2 planes and strongly increase the superexchange coupling J. This enhances the spin pairing effects locally and may explain the observed spatial variations of the density of states and the pairing gap.

Theory of inplane magnetoresistance in two-dimensional massless Dirac fermion system

We present the theory of the inplane magnetoresistance in two-dimensional massless Dirac fermion systems including the Zeeman splitting and the electron-electron interaction effect on the Landau level broadening within a random phase approximation. With the decrease in temperature, we find a characteristic temperature dependence of the inplane magnetoresistance showing a minimum followed by an enhancement with a plateau. The theory is in good agreement with the experiment of the layered organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under pressure. In-plane magnetoresistsnce of graphene is also discussed based on this theory.

Density matrix renormalization group study of optical conductivity in the one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3

Applying newly developed dynamical density matrix renormalization group techniques at zero and finite temperatures to a Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, we examine the optical conductivity of a typical one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3. We find a set of parameters in the Hubbard-Holstein model, which can describe optical conductivity for both Mott-gap excitation in the high-energy region and phonon-assisted spin excitation in the low-energy region. We also find that electron-phonon interaction gives additional broadening in the temperature dependence of the Mott-gap excitation.

Chirality in spin-1/2 zigzag XY chain: Low-temperature density-matrix renormalization group study

We study spin chirality for a spin-1/2 zigzag XY chain at low temperature by applying a low-temperature density-matrix renormalization group technique. We calculate temperature dependence of dynamical and static correlations of the chirality. In a chiral phase, chiral long-range order at zero temperature disappears at finite temperature, consistent with the fact that there is no long-range order at finite temperature in one-dimensional systems with short-range interactions. In a dimer phase next to the chiral phase, we find an enhancement of static chiral correlation as well as spin correlation with increasing temperature. The enhancement corresponds to the increase of spectral weight inside a gap in the dynamical chiral-correlation function. This temperature-induced chiral correlation is a demonstration of the presence of a chiral state in excited states.

Topological and Transport Properties of Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic Metallic Phase of Iron-Based Superconductors

We investigate Dirac fermions in the antifferomagnetic metallic state of iron-based superconduc- tors. Deriving an effective Hamiltonian for Dirac fermions, we reveal that there exist two Dirac cones carrying the same chirality, contrary to graphene, compensated by a Fermi surface with a quadratic energy dispersion as a consequence of a non-trivial topological property inherent in the band structure. We also find that the presence of the Dirac fermions gives the difference of sign- change temperatures between the Hall coefficient and the thermopower. This is consistent with available experimental data.

Crossover from Positive to Negative Interlayer Magnetoresistance in Multilayer Massless Dirac Fermion System with Non-Vertical Interlayer Tunneling

We present a theoretical description of the interlayer magnetoresistance in the layered Dirac fermion system with the application to the organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under pressure. Assuming a non-vertical interlayer tunneling and including higher Landau level effects we calculate the interlayer conductivity using the Kubo formula. We propose a physical picture of the experimentally observed crossover from the negative interlayer magnetoresistance, where the Dirac fermion zero-energy Landau level plays a central role, to the positive interlayer magnetoresistance that is the consequence of the Landau level mixing effect upon non-vertical interlayer hopping. The crossover magnetic field depends on the Landau level broadening factor and can be used to determine the Dirac fermion Landau level energy spectrum.

Magnetic quantum oscillations and multiple holon pockets in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$

We show that lightly doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$ has multiple holon pockets with different areas, which lead to multiple frequencies of magnetic quantum oscillations. Using neutron scattering data on incommensurate spin ordering we determine these areas, which yields frequencies in good agreement with experiments. Divergence of the effective mass observed in magnetic quantum oscillations indicates a quantum phase transition at the oxygen content $y\approx 0.48$. We argue that the transition is the onset of quasistatic incommensurate magnetic order predicted by theory and observed in neutron scattering.

Bipolaron in the t-J model coupled to longitudinal and transverse quantum lattice vibrations

We explore the influence of two different polarizations of quantum oxygen vibrations on the spacial symmetry of the bound magnetic bipolaron in the context of the t-J model by using exact diagonalization within a limited functional space. Quadratic electron phonon coupling to transverse polarization stabilizes d-wave symmetry. The existence of a magnetic background is essential for the formation of a d-wave bipolaron state. With increasing linear electron phonon coupling to longitudinal polarization the symmetry of a d-wave bipolaron state changes to a p-wave. Bipolaron develops a large anisotropic effective mass.

Effect of Fermi Surface Topology on Inter-Layer Magnetoresistance in Layered Multiband Systems: Application to LaFeAsO1-xFx

In layered single band systems, the interlayer conductivity depends on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field and takes maximum values when the magnetic field is perpendicular to flat regions of the Fermi surface. Extending this known results to multi-band systems, we propose an experiment to extract information about their Fermi surface topology. We discuss application of the formula to a FeAs-based superconductor, LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$. We show that the magnetically ordered state in the parent compound is clearly distinguished from the paramagnetic state by the oscillation period in the interlayer conductivity. We demonstrate that evolution of the Fermi surface topology by changing the doping concentration is reflected to the interlayer conductivity oscillation patterns.

Induced Order in Nonequivalent Two-Leg Hubbard Ladder

Motivated by the presence of different orders in multilayered high-temperature superconductors, we examine a model consisting of nonequivalent two Hubbard chains coupled by interchain hopping by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and a mean-field theory. As an example, we consider a system with noninteracting chain without order and a Hubbard chain with strong spin-density-wave correlation. We find that the magnitude of the interchain hopping controls the strength of induced order as well as that of original order and its fluctuation. It is also found that the induced order decreases with increasing the magnitude of the original order. Implications to the multilayered system are discussed.

Possible Verification of Tilted Anisotropic Dirac Cone in α-(BEDT-TTF)_2 I_3 Using Interlayer Magnetoresistance

It is proposed that the presence of a tilted and anisotropic Dirac cone can be verified using the interlayer magnetoresistance in the layered Dirac fermion system, which is realized in quasi-two-dimensional organic compound α-(BEDT-TTF)_2 I_3. Theoretical formula is derived using the analytic Landau level wave functions and assuming local tunneling of electrons. It is shown that the resistivity takes the maximum in the direction of the tilt if anisotropy of the Fermi velocity of the Dirac cone is small. The procedure is described to determine the parameters of the tilt and anisotropy.

Low-temperature density matrix renormalization group using regulated polynomial expansion

We propose a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique at finite temperatures. As is the case of the ground state DMRG, we use a single-target state that is calculated by making use of a regulated polynomial expansion. Both static and dynamical quantities are obtained after a random-sampling and averaging procedure. We apply this technique to the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling and find that this gives excellent results at low temperatures.

Enhancement of phonon effects in photoexcited states of one-dimensional Mott insulators

We examine how the electron correlation affects the electron-phonon (EP) interaction in the linear optical absorption spectrum of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard-Holstein model. A density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation shows that the effect of the EP interaction on an exciton is enhanced by increasing the on-site Coulomb repulsion. This enhancement is in contrast to the effect of the EP interaction on the ground state where the Peierls instability is suppressed by the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The DMRG data with the EP interaction fit with absorption experiments in 1D cuprates better than those for the extended Hubbard model.

Electron-phonon coupling and spin-charge separation in one-dimensional Mott insulators

We examine the single-particle excitation spectrum in the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling by performing the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) calculation. The DDMRG results are interpreted as superposition of spectra for a spinless carrier dressed with phonons. The superposition is a consequence of robustness of the spin-charge separation against electron-phonon coupling. The separation is in contrast to the coupling between phonon and spin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional systems. We discuss implication of the results of the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on SrCuO${}_{2}$.

Temperature dependence of spinon and holon excitations in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on one-dimensional Mott insulators, SrCuO${}_{2}$ and Na${}_{0.96}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{5}$, we examine the single-particle spectral weight of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at half-filling. We are particularly interested in the temperature dependence of the spinon and holon excitations. For this reason, we have performed the dynamical density matrix renormalization group and determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations for the single-particle spectral weight of the 1D Hubbard model. In the QMC data, the spinon and holon branches become observable at temperatures where the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop. At these temperatures, the spinon branch grows rapidly. In the light of the numerical results, we discuss the spinon and holon branches observed by the ARPES experiments on SrCuO${}_{2}$. These numerical results are also in agreement with the temperature dependence of the ARPES results on Na${}_{0.96}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{5}$.

Resonant two-magnon Raman scattering in two-dimensional and ladder-type Mott insulators

We investigate the resonant two-magnon Raman scattering in the two-dimensional (2D) and ladder-type Mott insulators by using a half-filled Hubbard model in the strong coupling limit. By performing numerical diagonalization calculations for small clusters, we find that the model can reproduce the experimental features in the 2D that the Raman intensity is enhanced when the incoming photon energy is not near the absorption edge but well above it. In the ladder-type Mott insulators, the Raman intensity is found to resonate with absorption spectrum in contrast to the 2D system. The difference between 2D and the ladder systems is explained by taking into account the fact that the ground state in 2D is a spin-ordered state while that in ladder is a spin-gapped one.

Nonlinear Optical Response in two-dimensional Mott Insulators

We study the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility $χ^{(3)}$ and photoexcited states of two-dimensional (2D) Mott insulators by using an effective model in the strong-coupling limit of a half-filled Hubbard model. In the numerically exact diagonalization calculations on finite-size clusters, we find that the coupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in the distribution of the dipole-allowed states with odd parity and the dipole-forbidden states with even parity in the photoexcited states. This is in contrast with the photoexcited states in one dimension, where the charge and spin degrees of freedom are decoupled. In the third-harmonic generation (THG) spectrum, main contribution is found to come from the process of three-photon resonance associated with the odd-parity states. As a result, the two-photon resonance process is less pronounced in the THG spectrum. The calculated THG spectrum is compared with recent experimental data. We also find that $χ^{(3)}$ with cross-polarized configuration of pump and probe photons shows spectral distributions similar to $χ^{(3)}$ with co-polarized configuration, although the weight is small. These findings will help the analyses of the experimental data of $χ^{(3)}$ in the 2D Mott insulators.
