Quasi-factorially closed subalgebras of Laurent polynomial rings

Let $R$ be a domain and $B=R[x_1^{\pm1},\ldots,x_n^{\pm1}]$ the Laurent polynomial ring over $R$. In this paper we study pre-factorially closed (pfc) and quasi-factorially closed (qfc) $R$-subalgebras of $B$, which generalize the notion of factorially closed subalgebras. We first establish a localization criterion for the qfc property. Using this criterion, we investigate monoid algebras $A=R[M]$ associated with submonoids $M\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$. We prove that $R[M]$ is qfc in $B$ if and only if the group generated by $M$ is a direct summand of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. This provides a complete characterization of the qfc property in terms of the lattice structure of the associated group. As a consequence, when $n=1$ and $M\subset\mathbb{N}$, the algebra $R[M]$ is qfc in $B$ precisely when $M$ is a numerical semigroup. For a general $R$-subalgebra $A\subset B$, we introduce an invariant $\mathrm{Gap}(A)$. We show that if $\mathrm{Gap}(A)$ is finite, then $A$ is qfc in $B$. Moreover, we clarify how the pfc and qfc conditions are related to other notions that naturally appear for subalgebras, such as retracts, being algebraically closed in $B$, and normality.

Remarks on retracts of polynomial rings in three variables in any characteristic

Let $A$ be a retract of the polynomial ring in three variables over a field $k$. It is known that if ${\rm char}\: (k) = 0$ or ${\rm tr.deg}\:_k A \not= 2$ then $A$ is a polynomial ring. In this paper, we give some sufficient conditions for $A$ to be the polynomial ring in two variables over $k$ when ${\rm char}\: (k) > 0$ and ${\rm tr.deg}\:_k A = 2$.

Retracts of Laurent polynomial rings

Let $R$ be an integral domain and $B=R[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring. In this paper, we consider retracts of $B[1/M]$ for a monomial $M$. We show that (1) if $M=\prod_{i=1}^nx_i$, then every retract is a Laurent polynomial ring over $R$, (2) if $R$ is a perfect field and $n=3$, then every retract is isomorphic to $R[y_1^{\pm1},\ldots,y_s^{\pm1},z_1,\ldots,z_t]$ for some $s,t\geq 0$.

Affine and Unirational unique factorial domains with unmixed gradings

This paper studies the class of unique factorial domains $B$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ which are affine or unirational over $k$ and which admit an effective unmixed $\mathbb{Z}^{d-1}$-grading with $B_0=k$, where $d$ is the dimension of $B$. Geometrically, these correspond to factorial affine $k$-varieties with an unmixed torus action of complexity one and trivial invariants. Our main result shows that this class is identical to the class of rings defined by trinomial data, thus generalizing earlier work of Mori, of Ishida, and of Hausen, Herrppich and Süss.

Smooth factorial affine surfaces of logarithmic Kodaira dimension zero with trivial units

This paper considers the family $\mathscr{S}_0$ of smooth affine factorial surfaces of logarithmic Kodaira dimension 0 with trivial units over an algebraically closed field $k$. Our main result (Theorem 4.1) is that the number of isomorphism classes represented in $\mathscr{S}_0$ is at least countably infinite. This contradicts the earlier classification of Gurjar and Miyanishi [5] which asserted that $\mathscr{S}_0$ has at most two elements up to isomorphism when $k=\mathbb{C}$. Thus, the classification of surfaces in $\mathscr{S}_0$ for the field $\mathbb{C}$, long thought to have been settled, is an open problem.

Higher derivations of Jacobian type in positive characteristic

In this paper, we study higher derivations of Jacobian type in positive characteristic. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(n-1)$-tuples of polynomials to be extendable in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over an integral domain $R$ of positive characteristic. In particular, we give characterizations of variables and univariate polynomials by using the terms of higher derivations of Jacobian type in the polynomial ring in two variables over a field of positive characteristic.

Factorial rational varieties which admit or fail to admit an elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action

Over a field $k$, we study rational UFDs of finite transcendence degree $n$ over $k$. We classify such UFDs $B$ when $n=2$, $k$ is algebraically closed, and $B$ admits a positive $\mathbb{Z}$-grading, showing in particular that $B$ is affine over $k$. We also consider the Russell cubic threefold over $\mathbb{C}$, and the Asanuma threefolds over a field of positive characterstic, showing that these threefolds admit no elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action. Finally, we show that, if $X$ is an affine $k$-variety and $X\times\mathbb{A}^m_k\cong_k\mathbb{A}^{n+m}_k$, then $X\cong_k\mathbb{A}^n_k$ if and only if $X$ admits an elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action.

A note on retracts of polynomial rings in three variables

In Costa's paper published in 1977, he asks us whether every retract of $k^{[n]}$ is also the polynomial ring or not, where $k$ is a field. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer in the case where $k$ is a field of characteristic zero and $n = 3$.
