Observation of Subharmonic Charge-Density-Wave Correlations in La-Based Cuprates

Pair-density-wave (PDW) correlations have been proposed as an important ingredient in the complex phase diagram of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, yet bulk-sensitive experimental signatures remain scarce. Here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing a subharmonic charge-density-wave (CDW) scattering response in Sr-doped $1/8$-LBCO. The subharmonic response appears at approximately half the primary CDW ordering wave vector and emerges within a physically relevant temperature regime associated with the development of in-plane superconducting correlations. Comparable subharmonic behavior is also observed in a chemically distinct La-based cuprate, LSCO, within the same stripe-ordered, layer-decoupled regime. Together, these observations identify a bulk-sensitive scattering signature that is consistent with PDW correlations in La-based superconducting cuprates.

Probing La-based nickelates with Ni 1$s$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy

We present a comparative Ni core level photoemission study of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, Nd$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, and LaNiO$_3$ using both the Ni $2p$ and the Ni $1s$. We address the challenges in analyzing the widely investigated Ni $2p$ spectra arising from the substantial overlap in energy of the Ni $2p$ with the La $3d$. We show that on the other hand the deep Ni $1s$ core level does provide a clean view on the intrinsic electronic excitations and we highlight its potential to resolve detailed differences in the electronic structure within the strongly correlated Ruddlesden-Popper series La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$.

Ferromagnetic Order of Reduced Magnetic Moments in a Frustrated Sawtooth Chain of the Magnetic Semiconductor ZnYb$_2$S$_4$

In a sawtooth spin chain, competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions suppress long-range order, yielding novel quantum states such as a spin-dimer singlet, 1/2 magnetization plateau, and spin contraction. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of the orthorhombic semiconductor ZnYb$_2$S$_4$, in which Yb$^{3+}$ ions with an effective spin-1/2 form a sawtooth chain along the $b$-axis. The specific heat exhibits a sharp peak at ${T}_{\rm m}$ $=$ 1.4 K, at which the magnetic entropy $S_{\rm m}$ reaches only 27% of $R$ln2. This reduced $S_{\rm m}$ at $T_{\rm m}$ indicates the entropy release of the ground state doublet of Yb$^{3+}$ even for $T$ $>$ $T_{\rm m}$. The isothermal magnetization $M(B)$ at 0.28 K exhibits hysteresis for $\left|B\right| \leq 0.2$ T and increases monotonically for $B > 0.2$ T. The spontaneous magnetization is only 0.1 ${\it μ}_{\rm B}$$/$Yb, an order of magnitude smaller than that expected for the ground state doublet of Yb$^{3+}$. Moreover, in powder neutron diffraction measurements, no superlattice reflections due to antiferromagnetic order are observed for $T$ $<$ $T_{\rm m}$. Therefore, in the ground state, the Yb moments are ferromagnetically aligned, but their amplitude is reduced by magnetic frustration in the sawtooth Yb chain.

Quadratic estimators for unwindowed power spectrum of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing and its application to $P_{\rm gm}(k)$ estimation

Galaxy-galaxy weak lensing provides a powerful means of measuring the average matter distribution around lens galaxies -- i.e., the galaxy bias relation. Properly accounting for the spin-2 nature of weak lensing distortions, we develop a quadratic estimator for measuring the $E$- and $B$-mode angular power spectra from galaxy-galaxy weak lensing, correcting for survey window effects arising from, for example, survey geometry and bright star masks. The estimator can be implemented efficiently by adopting FFTs on pixelized maps of the lens galaxy distribution and source galaxy ellipticities, under the flat-sky approximation. Using simulated weak lensing fields and halo catalogs in the light-cone ray-tracing simulations, we show that the estimator can recover the underlying $E$-mode power spectrum, $C_{{\rm g}E}(\ell)$, to within a few percent in fractional error, while minimizing the leakage of $E$-mode into the $B$-mode power spectrum, in each multipole bin over the wide range of multipoles (up to $\ell \sim 3000$ studied in this paper). We then discuss that the estimator can be used to estimate the 3D galaxy-matter power spectrum, $P_{\rm gm}(k)$, by dividing lens galaxies into multiple redshift slices. We also derive an optimal weighting for each lens redshift slice in the shot noise-limited regime for the estimation of $P_{\rm gm}(k)$, which reduces the statistical errors by up to $\sim$20\% compared to the case without weighting.

Tilted stripes origin in ${\mathrm{La}}_{1.88}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.12}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ revealed by anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping

Spin- and charge- stripe order has been extensively studied in the superconducting cuprates, among which underdoped ${\mathrm{La}}_{2-x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ (LSCO) is an archetype with static spin stripes at low temperatures. An intriguing, but not completely understood, phenomenon in LSCO is that the stripes are tilted away from the high-symmetry Cu-Cu directions. Using high-resolution neutron scattering on LSCO with $x=0.12$, we find two coexisting phases at low temperatures, one with static spin stripes and the other with fluctuating ones, both sharing the same tilt angle. Our numerical calculations using the doped Hubbard model elucidate the tilting's origin, attributing it to anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping $t^{\prime}$, consistent with the material's slight orthorhombicity. Our results underscore the model's success in describing specific details of the ground state of this real material and highlight the role of $t^\prime$ in the Hamiltonian, revealing the delicate interplay between stripes and superconductivity across theoretical and experimental contexts.

Fermi-liquid state in $T$*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ revealed via element substitution effects on magnetism

Despite its unique structural features, the magnetism of single-layered cuprate with five oxygen coordination ($T$*-type structure) has not been investigated thus far. Here, we report the results of muon spin relaxation and magnetic susceptibility measurements to elucidate the magnetism of $T$*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) via magnetic Fe- and non-magnetic Zn-substitution. We clarified the inducement of the spin-glass (SG)-like magnetically ordered state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Fe$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x = 0.24 + y$, and the non-magnetic state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Zn$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x$ = 0.24 after the suppression of superconductivity for $y$ $\geq$ 0.025. The SG state lies below $\sim$7 K in a wide Sr concentration range between 0.19 and 0.34 in 5$\%$ Fe-substituted LESCO. The short-range SG state is consistent with that originating from the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a metallic state. Thus, the results provide the first evidence for Fermi liquid (FL) state in the pristine $T$*-type LESCO. Taking into account the results of an oxygen $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement $[$J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 89, 075002 (2020)$]$ reporting the actual hole concentrations in LESCO, our results demonstrate the existence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region, compared to that in $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The emergence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region is possibly associated with a smaller charge transfer gap energy in the parent material with five oxygen coordination.

Quantum Criticality in YbCu4Ni

We report on the quantum criticality of YbCu$_4$Ni as revealed by our combined micro- and macro-measurements. We determine the crystal structure of YbCu$_4$Ni with site mixing by neutron diffraction measurements, which suggests the possible presence of Kondo disorder. However, decreasing the local spin susceptibility distribution and the development of spin fluctuations below 10 K at ambient pressure by muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements suggests that YbCu4Ni exhibits quantum criticality. Therefore, our experimental results indicate that YbCu4Ni is a new material that exhibits quantum criticality under a zero magnetic field and ambient pressure.

Magnetic Instability of Pr3Ru4Sn13

We report on the quantum criticality of Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ revealed by our new material research. Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been synthesized by flux growth and characterized by single X-ray, powder X-ray, and powder neutron diffraction measurements. The compound adopts a Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$-type structure with a cubic Pm$\bar{3}$n. From the magnetization at 1 T, the effective magnetic moment was estimated to be 3.58 $μ_B$ per Pr$^{3+}$, suggesting that the magnetism is mainly contributed by Pr$^{3+}$ ions. The specific heat and magnetization show an anomaly at $T_{N} = 7.5$ ~ K owing to the phase transition. The muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectra exhibit clear oscillations below $T_N$. This suggests that the phase is magnetically ordered. The volume fraction of the magnetic phase estimated from the initial asymmetry is around ten percent. In addition, spin fluctuations were observed at low temperatures. These results provide microscopic evidence that the material is closest to the antiferromagnetically quantum critical point with a partial order among Pr$_3$$T_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T= $ Co, Ru, Rh).

Extremely Large Magnetoresistance and Anisotropic Transport in Multipolar Kondo System PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$

Multipolar Kondo systems offer unprecedented opportunities for designing astonishing quantum phases and functionalities beyond spin-only descriptions. A model material platform of this kind is the cubic heavy-fermion system Pr$Tr_{2}$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr=$ Ti, V), which hosts a nonmagnetic crystal-electric-field (CEF) ground state and substantial Kondo entanglement of the local quadrupolar and octopolar moments with the conduction electron sea. Here, we explore magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall effect of PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ that develops ferroquadrupolar (FQ) order below $T_{Q} \sim 2$ K and compare its behavior with that of the non-4$f$ analog, LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$. In the FQ ordered phase, PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ displays extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) of $\sim 10^{3}\%$. The unsaturated, quasi-linear field ($B$) dependence of the XMR violates the conventional Kohler's scaling and defies description based on carrier compensation alone. By comparing the MR and the Hall effect observed in PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ and LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, we conclude that the open-orbit topology on the electron-type Fermi surface (FS) sheet is key for the observed XMR. The low-temperature MR and the Hall resistivity in PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ display pronounced anisotropy in the [111] and [001] magnetic fields, which is absent in LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, suggesting that the transport anisotropy ties in with the anisotropic magnetic-field response of the quadrupolar order parameter.

Hyper Suprime-Cam Year 3 Results: Cosmology from Cosmic Shear Power Spectra

We measure weak lensing cosmic shear power spectra from the three-year galaxy shear catalog of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program imaging survey. The shear catalog covers $416 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ of the northern sky, with a mean $i$-band seeing of 0.59 arcsec and an effective galaxy number density of 15 $\mathrm{arcmin}^{-2}$ within our adopted redshift range. With an $i$-band magnitude limit of 24.5 mag, and four tomographic redshift bins spanning $0.3 \leq z_{\mathrm{ph}} \leq 1.5$ based on photometric redshifts, we obtain a high-significance measurement of the cosmic shear power spectra, with a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 26.4 in the multipole range $300<\ell<1800$. The accuracy of our power spectrum measurement is tested against realistic mock shear catalogs, and we use these catalogs to get a reliable measurement of the covariance of the power spectrum measurements. We use a robust blinding procedure to avoid confirmation bias, and model various uncertainties and sources of bias in our analysis, including point spread function systematics, redshift distribution uncertainties, the intrinsic alignment of galaxies and the modeling of the matter power spectrum. For a flat $Λ$CDM model, we find $S_8 \equiv σ_8 (Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5} =0.776^{+0.032}_{-0.033}$, which is in excellent agreement with the constraints from the other HSC Year 3 cosmology analyses, as well as those from a number of other cosmic shear experiments. This result implies a $\sim$$2σ$-level tension with the Planck 2018 cosmology. We study the effect that various systematic errors and modeling choices could have on this value, and find that they can shift the best-fit value of $S_8$ by no more than $\sim$$0.5σ$, indicating that our result is robust to such systematics.

Two-dimensional XY-type Magnetic Properties of Locally Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$

We performed $^{75}$As-NMR measurements to investigate the normal-state magnetic properties of CeRh$_2$As$_2$, a recently-discovered heavy-fermion superconductor. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the Knight shift at the As(2) site indicate easy-plane-type magnetic anisotropy in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. With regard to spin fluctuations, the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ arising from the 4$f$ electrons decreases from high-temperature constant behavior on cooling at $\sim$ 40~K, which is typical behavior of heavy-fermion systems. In addition, $1/T_1$ becomes constant at low temperatures, suggesting spatially two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Two-dimensional magnetic correlations in the real space are quite rare among heavy-fermion superconductors, and they may be a key factor in the unique superconducting multi-phase in CeRh$_2$As$_2$.

Observation of antiferromagnetic order as odd-parity multipoles inside the superconducting phase in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Spatial inversion symmetry in crystal structures is closely related to the superconducting (SC) and magnetic properties of materials. Recently, several theoretical proposals that predict various interesting phenomena caused by the breaking of the local inversion symmetry have been presented. However, experimental validation has not yet progressed owing to the lack of model materials. Here we present evidence for antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (SC transition temperature $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.37$~K), wherein the Ce site breaks the local inversion symmetry. The evidence is based on the observation of different extents of broadening of the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrum at two crystallographically inequivalent As sites. This AFM ordering breaks the inversion symmetry of this system, resulting in the activation of an odd-parity magnetic multipole. Moreover, the onset of antiferromagnetism $T_{\rm N}$ within an SC phase, with $T_{\rm N} < T_{\rm SC}$, is quite unusual in systems wherein superconductivity coexists or competes with magnetism. Our observations show that CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a promising system to study how the absence of local inversion symmetry induces or influences unconventional magnetic and SC states, as well as their interaction.

$^{139}$La-NMR study of spin-dynamics coupled with hole mobility in $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$Sr$_{0.28}$CuO$_{4-δ}$

In $T$*-type cuprate oxides with five oxygen coordination, little is known about the relationship between the spin correlations and dope carriers. We performed $^{139}$La-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrical resistivity measurements on an as-sintered (AS) and oxidation annealed (OA) polycrystalline $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$S$_{0.28}$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) to investigate its magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties. Upon cooling, the NMR spectrum of AS LESCO broadened below 3 K, at which the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ against the temperature exhibited a maximum, thereby indicating the appearance of static magnetism. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ between 3 K and 20 K was similar to that of the resistivity displaying the semiconducting behavior. Furthermore, the energy scale of the transport gap and spin-dynamics estimated was found to be comparable. These results suggest a close connection between the mobility of the doped carriers and low-energy spin-dynamics, as reported for lightly doped $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. In the OA SC sample, we confirmed the absence of a magnetic order and the Korringa relation above 10 K. Therefore, in the $T$*-type LESCO with $x$ = 0.28, the magnetic state coupled with holes drastically turns to the weakly correlated metallic state by oxidation annealing.

Reduction annealing effects on the crystal structure of $T^{\prime}$-type La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$

We performed neutron powder diffraction measurements on the as-sintered (AS) and oxygen-reduced (OR) La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ (LECO). The structural parameters for oxygens in AS and OR samples refined by the Rietveld analysis are almost identical to those of the reference system, Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$. Thus, the two systems are comparable in terms of the structural changes in oxygens due to the annealing, although superconductivity appears only in LECO.

Distinct variation of electronic states due to annealing in La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_{2}$CuO$_4$

We performed Cu {\it K}-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements on T'-type La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_4$ (LECO) and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ (NCO) to investigate the variation in the electronic state associated with the emergence of superconductivity due to annealing. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra of as-sintered (AS) LECO are quite similar to those of AS NCO, indicating that the ground state of AS T'-type LECO is a Mott insulator. We found a significant variation of the electronic state at the Cu sites in LECO due to annealing. The electron density after annealing ($n_{\rm AN}$) was evaluated for both superconducting LECO and non-superconducting NCO and found to be 0.40 and 0.05 electrons per Cu, respectively. In LECO but not in NCO, extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed a softening in the strength of the Cu-O bond in the CuO$_2$ plane due to annealing, which is consistent with the screening effect on phonons in the metallic state. Since the amounts of oxygen loss due to annealing ($δ$) for LECO and NCO are comparable with each other, these results suggest distinct electron-doping processes in the two compounds. That electron-doping in NCO approximately follows the relation $n_{\rm AN}=2δ$ can be understood if electrons are doped through oxygen deficiency, but the anneal-induced metallic nature and large $n_{\rm AN}$ of LECO suggest a variation of the electronic band structure causes self-doping of carriers. The origin of the difference in doping processes due to annealing is discussed in connection with the size of the charge transfer gap.

Field-Orientation Effect on Ferro-Quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Search for the field-induced magnetic instability around the upper critical field of superconductivity in H || c in CeCoIn5

We present nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) at the Co site and ac-susceptibility results in the normal and superconducting (SC) states of CeCoIn5 for H || c near the SC upper critical field Hc2 above 0.1 K. At 4.2 T, 1/T1 rapidly decreases below the SC transition temperature, consistent with the previous reports. Although the field dependence of 1/T1T at 0.1 K shows a peak at 5.2 T above Hc2, the temperature dependence of 1/T1T at 5.2 T is independent of temperature below 0.2 K, showing a Fermi-liquid behavior. In addition, we found no NMR-spectrum broadening by the appearance of internal fields around Hc2 at 0.1 K. We could not detect any field-induced magnetic instability around Hc2 down to 0.1 K although the remarkable non-Fermi-liquid behavior towards Hc2 was observed in various physical quantities.

Field-Induced Switching of Ferro-Quadrupole Order Parameter in PrTi2Al20

We report magnetic-field-induced first-order phase transitions in the ferro-quadrupole (FQ) ordered state of PrTi2Al20, in which non-Kramers Pr3+ ions with two 4f electrons have a non-magnetic Gamma3 doublet ground state in the cubic Td crystalline electric field. For magnetic fields along [111], 27Al-NMR and magnetization experiments reveal Qz \propto 3z2-r2 type FQ order below 2 K independent of field strength. Magnetic fields along [001] or [110], however, induce discontinuous switching of order parameters within the two dimensional space spanned by Qz and Qx \propto x2-y2 at small field values less than a few tesla. A symmetry-based theoretical analysis shows that the transitions can be caused by competition between the magnetic Zeeman interaction and anisotropy in the quadrupole-quadrupole interactions, if the latter dominates over the former in low fields and vice versa in high fields. Furthermore, striking violation of proportionality between NMR Knight shift and magnetic susceptibility is observed in the symmetry-broken FQ phases, indicating significant influence of FQ order on the hybridization between conduction and f electrons, which in turn mediates the RKKY-type quadrupole interaction causing the FQ order. This feedback effect may be a specific feature of quadrupole orders not commonly observed in magnetic phase transitions and play a key role for inducing the discontinuous transitions.
