Theory of Huge Thermoelectric Effect Based on Magnon Drag Mechanism: Application to Thin-Film Heusler Alloy

To understand the unexpectedly high thermoelectric performance observed in the thin-film Heusler alloy Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al, we study the magnon drag effect, generated by the tungsten based impurity band, as a possible source of this enhancement, in analogy to the phonon drag observed in FeSb$_2$. Assuming that the thin-film Heusler alloy has a conduction band integrating with the impurity band, originated by the tungsten substitution, we derive the electrical conductivity $L_{11}$ based on the self-consistent t-matrix approximation and the thermoelectric conductivity $L_{12}$ due to magnon drag, based on the linear response theory, and estimate the temperature dependent electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and power factor. Finally, we compare the theoretical results with the experimental results of the thin-film Heusler alloy to show that the origin of the exceptional thermoelectric properties is likely to be due to the magnon drag related with the tungsten-based impurity band.

Direct synthesis of p-type bulk BiCuSeO oxyselenides by reactive spark plasma sintering and related thermoelectric properties

Herein, we demonstrate that BiCuSeO compound can be formed in bulk directly from the raw materials through reactive spark plasma sintering (RSPS) followed by ball milling and a second short spark plasma sintering step. Compared to BiCuSeO samples obtained by a conventional solid-state reaction, the electrical transport properties of the RSPS bulk were moderately affected by the sintering technique, while the lattice thermal conductivity was almost unaffected, and the figure of merit zT attained a value at 773 K comparable to state-of-the-art BiCuSeO. The results indicate a new scalable method for the preparation of oxyselenides.

Anisotropic thermal transport in magnetic intercalates Fe$_{x}$TiS$_2$

We present a study of the of thermal transport in thin single crystals of iron-intercalated titanium disulphide, Fe$_{x}$TiS$_2$ for $0\leq x \leq 0.20$. We determine the distribution of intercalants using high-resolution crystallographic and magnetic measurements, confirming the insertion of Fe without long-range ordering. We find that iron intercalation perturbs the lattice very little, and suppresses the tendency of TiS$_2$ to self-intercalate with excess Ti. We observe trends in the thermal conductivity that are compatible with our ab initio calculations of thermal transport in perfectly stoichiometric TiS$_2$.

SPS-Sintered NaTaO3-Fe2O3 Composite exhibits Large Seebeck Coefficient and Electric Current

NaTaO3-50wt% Fe2O3 composite ceramics showed a large Seebeck voltage of -300 mV at a temperature gradient of 650 K yielding a constant Seebeck coefficient of more than -500 microV/K over a wide temperature range. We report for the first time that SPS sintering at low temperature 870K could maintain the short-circuit current of -80 microA, which makes this thermoelectric material a possible candidate for high-temperature applications up to 1623 K. The reason for the good performance is the interface between Fe2O3 and surrounding NaTaO3 perovskite. When spark-plasma sintering (SPS) is used, constitutional vacancies disappeared and the electric conductivity increases remarkably yielding ZT of 0.016.
