Lateral diffusion on a frozen random surface

The lateral diffusion coefficient of a Brownian particle on a two-dimensional random surface is studied in the quenched limit for which the surface configuration is time-independent. We start with the stochastic equation of motion for a Brownian particle on a fluctuating surface, which has been derived by Naji and Brown. The mean square displacement of the particle projected on a base plane is calculated exactly under the condition that the surface with a constant shape has no spatial correlation. We prove that the obtained lateral diffusion coefficient is in between the known upper and lower bounds.

Simple model of cell crawling

Based on symmetry consideration of migration and shape deformations, we formulate phenomenologically the dynamics of cell crawling in two dimensions. Forces are introduced to change the cell shape. The shape deformations induce migration of the cell on a substrate. For time-independent forces we show that not only a stationary motion but also a limit cycle oscillation of the migration velocity and the shape occurs as a result of nonlinear coupling between different deformation modes. Time-dependent forces are generated in a stochastic manner by utilizing the so-called coherence resonance of an excitable system. The present coarse-grained model has a flexibility that it can be applied, e.g., both to keratocyte cells and to Dictyostelium cells, which exhibit quite different dynamics from each other. The key factors for the motile behavior inherent in each cell type are identified in our model.

Dynamics and electro-rheology of sheared immiscible fluid mixtures

We analyze the electro-rheological effect in immiscible fluid mixtures with dielectric mismatch. By taking the electric field effect into account, which couples to the dynamics of domain morphology under flow, we propose a set of electro-rheological constitutive equations valid under the condition where the relative magnitude of the flow field is stronger than that of the electric field. Through the comparison with recent experiment, we point out a unique dynamical stress response inherent in situations, where the cross-coupling between different fields is essential.

Active crystals and their stability

A recently introduced active phase field crystal model describes the formation of ordered resting and traveling crystals in systems of self-propelled particles. Increasing the active drive, a resting crystal can be forced to perform collectively ordered migration as a single traveling object. We demonstrate here that these ordered migrating structures are linearly stable. In other words, during migration, the single crystalline texture together with the globally ordered collective motion is preserved even on large length scales. Furthermore, we consider self-propelled particles on a substrate that are surrounded by a thin fluid film. We find that in this case the resulting hydrodynamic interactions can destabilize the order.

Dynamics of a deformable active particle under shear flow

The motion of a deformable active particle in linear shear flow is explored theoretically. Based on symmetry considerations, in two spatial dimensions, we propose coupled nonlinear dynamical equations for the particle position, velocity, deformation, and rotation. In our model, both, passive rotations induced by the shear flow as well as active spinning motions, are taken into account. Our equations reduce to known models in the two limits of vanishing shear flow and vanishing particle deformability. For varied shear rate and particle propulsion speed, we solve the equations numerically and obtain a manifold of different dynamical modes including active straight motion, periodic motions, motions on undulated cycloids, winding motions, as well as quasi-periodic and chaotic motions induced at high shear rates. The types of motion are distinguished by different characteristics in the real-space trajectories and in the dynamical behavior of the particle orientation and its deformation. Our predictions can be verified in experiments on self-propelled droplets exposed to a linear shear flow.

Formation and collision of traveling bands in interacting deformable self-propelled particles

We study collective dynamics of interacting deformable self-propelled particles whose migration velocity increases when the local density of particles is increased. Numerical simulations in two dimensions reveal that traveling bands similar to those found previously in the Vicsek-type model is easily formed by this local density dependence of the migration velocity. We show that a pair of stripe bands which are traveling to the opposite directions is not destructed by a head-on collision but survives again after collision.

Spinning motion of a deformable self-propelled particle in two dimensions

We investigate the dynamics of a single deformable self-propelled particle which undergoes a spinning motion in a two-dimensional space. Equations of motion are derived from the symmetry argument for three kinds of variables. One is a vector which represents the velocity of the centre of mass. The second is a traceless symmetric tensor representing deformation. The third is an antisymmetric tensor for spinning degree of freedom. By numerical simulations, we have obtained variety of dynamical states due to interplay between the spinning motion and the deformation. The bifurcations of these dynamical states are analyzed by the simplified equations of motion.

Soft deformable self-propelled particles

In this work we investigate the collective behavior of self-propelled particles that deform due to local pairwise interactions. We demonstrate that this deformation alone can induce alignment of the velocity vectors. The onset of collective motion is analyzed. Applying a Gaussian-core repulsion between the particles, we find a transition to disordered non-collective motion under compression. We here explain that this reflects the reentrant fluid behavior of the general Gaussian-core model now applied to a self-propelled system. Truncating the Gaussian potential can lead to cluster crystallization or more disordered cluster states. For intermediate values of the Gaussian-core potential we for the first time observe laning for deformable self-propelled particles. Finally, without the core potential, but including orientational noise, we connect our description to the Vicsek approach for self-propelled particles with nematic alignment interactions.

Self-propelled motion of a fluid droplet under chemical reaction

We study self-propelled dynamics of a droplet due to a Marangoni effect and chemical reactions in a binary fluid with a dilute third component of chemical product which affects the interfacial energy of a droplet. The equation for the migration velocity of the center of mass of a droplet is derived in the limit of an infinitesimally thin inter- face. We found that there is a bifurcation from a motionless state to a propagating state of droplet by changing the strength of the Marangoni effect.

Maxwell stress in fluid mixtures

We examine the structure of Maxwell stress in binary fluid mixtures under an external electric field and discuss its consequence. In particular, we show that, in immiscible blends, it is intimately related to the statistics of domain structure. This leads to a compact formula, which may be useful in the investigation of electro-rheological effects in such systems. The stress tensor calculated in a phase separated fluid under a steady electric field is in a good agreement with recent experiments.

Dynamics of a deformable self-propelled particle under external forcing

We investigate dynamics of a self-propelled deformable particle under external field in two dimensions based on the model equations for the center of mass and a tensor variable characterizing deformations. We consider two kinds of external force. One is a gravitational-like force which enters additively in the time-evolution equation for the center of mass. The other is an electric-like force supposing that a dipole moment is induced in the particle. This force is added to the equation for the deformation tensor. It is shown that a rich variety of dynamics appears by changing the strength of the forces and the migration velocity of self-propelled particle.

Collective Dynamics of Deformable Self-Propelled Particles with Repulsive Interaction

We investigate dynamics of deformable self-propelled particles with a repulsive interaction whose magnitude depends on the relative direction of elongation of a pair of particles. A collective motion of the particles appears in two dimensions. However this ordered state becomes unstable when the particle density exceeds a certain critical threshold and the dynamics becomes disorder. We show by a mean field analysis that this novel transition characteristic to deformability occurs due to a saddle-node bifurcation.

Deformation of a self-propelled domain in an excitable reaction-diffusion system

We formulate the theory for a self-propelled domain in an excitable reaction-diffusion system in two dimensions where the domain deforms from a circular shape when the propagation velocity is increased. In the singular limit where the width of the domain boundary is infinitesimally thin, we derive a set of equations of motion for the center of gravity and two fundamental deformation modes. The deformed shapes of a steadily propagating domain are obtained. The set of time-evolution equations exhibits a bifurcation from a straight motion to a circular motion by changing the system parameters.

Deformable self-propelled particles

A theory of self-propelled particles is developed in two dimensions assuming that the particles can be deformed from a circular shape when the propagating velocity is increased. A coupled set of equations in terms of the velocity and a tensor variable to represent the deformation is introduced to show that there is a bifurcation from a straight motion to a circular motion of a single particle. Dynamics of assembly of the particles is studied numerically where there is a global interaction such that the particles tend to cause an orientational order.

Probing Nonequilibrium Fluctuations through Linear Response

Linear response analysis in the nonequilibrium steady state (Gaussian regime) provides two independent fluctuation-response relations. One, in the form of the symmetric matrix, manifests the departure from the equilibrium formula through the quantity so-called {\it irreversible circulation}. The other, in the anti-symmetric form, connects the asymmetries in the fluctuation and the response function. These formulas represent characteristic features of fluctuations far from equilibrium, which have no counterparts in thermal equilibrium.

Different pathways in mechanical unfolding/folding cycle of a single semiflexible polymer

Kinetics of conformational change of a semiflexible polymer under mechanical external field were investigated with Langevin dynamics simulations. It is found that a semiflexible polymer exhibits large hysteresis in mechanical folding/unfolding cycle even with a slow operation, whereas in a flexible polymer, the hysteresis almost disappears at a sufficiently slow operation. This suggests that the essential features of the structural transition of a semiflexible polymer should be interpreted at least on a two-dimensional phase space. The appearance of such large hysteresis is discussed in relation to different pathways in the loading and unloading processes. By using a minimal two-variable model, the hysteresis loop is described in terms of different pathways on the transition between two stable states.

Steady state properties of a driven granular medium

We study a two-dimensional granular system where external driving force is applied to each particle in the system in such a way that the system is driven into a steady state by balancing the energy input and the dissipation due to inelastic collision between particles. The velocities of the particles in the steady state satisfy the Maxwellian distribution. We measure the density-density correlation and the velocity-velocity correlation functions in the steady state and find that they are of power-law scaling forms. The locations of collision events are observed to be time-correlated and such a correlation is described by another power-law form. We also find that the dissipated energy obeys a power-law distribution. These results indicate that the system evolves into a critical state where there are neither characteristic spatial nor temporal scales in the correlation functions. A test particle exhibits an anomalous diffusion which is apparently similar to the Richardson law in a three-dimensional turbulent flow.

Logarithmic density relaxation in compaction of granular materials

On the basis of physical considerations we propose a one-dimensional discrete lattice model for the density relaxation of granular materials under tapping. Solving the difference equation numerically, we find a logarithmic time-dependence of the density relaxation. This is in agreement with experimental results of Knight et al. [Phys. Rev. E 51, 3957(1995)]. The origin of this anomalous relaxation is elucidated analytically by solving the equation of its continuum version asymptotically in time.
