Supersymmetry Breaking in Chern-Simons-matter Theories

Some of supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories are known to exhibit supersymmetry breaking when the Chern-Simons level is less than a certain number. The mechanism of the supersymmetry breaking is, however, not clear from the field theory viewpoint. In this paper, we discuss vacuum states of ${\cal N}=2$ pure Chern-Simons theory and ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theories of quiver type using related theories in which Chern-Simons terms are replaced with (anti-)fundamental chiral multiplets. In the latter theories, supersymmetry breaking can be shown to occur by examining that the vacuum energy is non-zero.

Eigenvalue Distributions in Matrix Models for Chern-Simons-matter Theories

The eigenvalue distribution is investigated for matrix models related via the localization to Chern-Simons-matter theories. An integral representation of the planar resolvent is used to derive the positions of the branch points of the planar resolvent in the large 't Hooft coupling limit. Various known exact results on eigenvalue distributions and the expectation value of Wilson loops are reproduced.

Exact Results and Holography of Wilson Loops in N=2 Superconformal (Quiver) Gauge Theories

Using localization, matrix model and saddle-point techniques, we determine exact behavior of circular Wilson loop in N=2 superconformal (quiver) gauge theories. Focusing at planar and large `t Hooft couling limits, we compare its asymptotic behavior with well-known exponential growth of Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. For theory with gauge group SU(N) coupled to 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we find that Wilson loop exhibits non-exponential growth -- at most, it can grow a power of `t Hooft coupling. For theory with gauge group SU(N) x SU(N) and bifundamental hypermultiplets, there are two Wilson loops associated with two gauge groups. We find Wilson loop in untwisted sector grows exponentially large as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We then find Wilson loop in twisted sector exhibits non-analytic behavior with respect to difference of two `t Hooft coupling constants. By letting one gauge coupling constant hierarchically larger/smaller than the other, we show that Wilson loops in the second type theory interpolate to Wilson loop in the first type theory. We infer implications of these findings from holographic dual description in terms of minimal surface of dual string worldsheet. We suggest intuitive interpretation that in both type theories holographic dual background must involve string scale geometry even at planar and large `t Hooft coupling limit and that new results found in the gauge theory side are attributable to worldsheet instantons and infinite resummation therein. Our interpretation also indicate that holographic dual of these gauge theories is provided by certain non-critical string theories.

On Large N Solution of Gaiotto-Tomasiello Theory

The planar solution is discussed for an N=3 Chern-Simons-matter theory constructed recently by Gaiotto and Tomasiello. The planar resolvent is obtained in terms of contour integrals. If the sum of two Chern-Simons levels k_1,k_2 is small, the expectation value of a supersymmetric Wilson loop grows exponentially with the total 't Hooft coupling, as is expected from AdS/CFT correspondence. If one of the Chern-Simons levels, say k_2, is taken to infinity, for which one of the 't Hooft coupling constants becomes zero, then the exponential behavior disappears.

On Large N Solution of ABJM Theory

We investigate the large N limit of the expectation value W(λ) of a BPS Wilson loop in ABJM theory, using an integral expression of the partition function obtained recently by Kapustin et.al. Certain saddle-point equations provide the correct perturbative expansion of W(λ). The large λbehavior of W(λ) is also obtained from the saddle-point equations. The result is compatible with AdS/CFT correspondence.

Notes on Matter in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We investigate the dynamics of a scalar field governed by the Lifshitz-type action which should appear naturally in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The wave of the scalar field may propagate with any speed without an upper bound. To preserve the causality, the action cannot have a generic form. Due to the superluminal propagation, a formation of a singularity may cause the breakdown of the predictability of the theory. To check whether such a catastrophe could occur in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, we investigate the dynamics of a dust. It turns out that the dust does not collapse completely to form a singularity in a generic situation, but expands again after it attains a maximum energy density.

Smoothing out Negative Tension Brane

We propose an extension of the five dimensional gravitational action with an external source in order to allow arbitrary smoothing of the negative tension brane in the Randall-Sundrum model. This extended action can be derived from a model with an auxiliary four form field coupled to the gravity. We point out a further generalization of our model in relation to tachyon condensation. A possible mechanism for radion stabilization in our model is also discussed.

Wilson Loops in Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory and Fundamental Strings in Anti-de Sitter Supergravity Dual

We study Wilson loop operators in three-dimensional, N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory dual to IIA superstring theory on AdS4 x CP3. Novelty of Wilson loop operators in this theory is that, for a given contour, there are two linear combinations of Wilson loop transforming oppositely under time-reversal transformation. We show that one combination is holographically dual to IIA fundamental string, while orthogonal combination is set to zero. We gather supporting evidences from detailed comparative study of generalized time-reversal transformations in both D2-brane worldvolume and ABJM theories. We then classify supersymmetric Wilson loops and find at most 1/6-supersymmetry. We next study Wilson loop expectation value in planar perturbation theory. For circular Wilson loop, we find features remarkably parallel to circular Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. First, all odd loop diagrams vanish identically and even loops contribute nontrivial contributions. Second, quantum corrected gauge and scalar propagators take the same form as those of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Combining these results, we propose that expectation value of circular Wilson loop is given by Wilson loop expectation value in pure Chern-Simons theory times zero-dimensional Gaussian matrix model whose variance is specified by an interpolating function of `t Hooft coupling. We suggest the function interpolates smoothly between weak and strong coupling regime, offering new test ground of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Quantum Effects on Tachyon Dynamics

We investigate the relevance of quantum effects in the study of bulk tachyon dynamics. We analyze the behavior of a system which consists of a tachyon, the graviton and the dilaton through the use of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the mini-superspace approximation, The singular behavior of the classical solution for the system is modified so that the quantum behavior seems to be regular.

Notes on the Hamiltonian formulation of 3D Yang-Mills theory

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is investigated in the Hamiltonian formalism based on the Karabali-Nair variable. A new algorithm is developed to obtain the renormalized Hamiltonian by identifying local counterterms in Lagrangian with the use of fictitious holomorphic symmetry existing in the framework with the KN variable. Our algorithm is totally algebraic and enables one to calculate the ground state wave functional recursively in gauge potentials. In particular, the Gaussian part thus calculated is shown to coincide with that obtained by Leigh et al. Higher-order corrections to the Gaussian part are also discussed.

AdS/CFT Correspondence as a Consequence of Scale Invariance

We study an anisotropic scale transformation in the worldsheet description of D3-branes in Type IIB theory, and show that the transformation is really a symmetry in a region near D3-branes. AdS/CFT correspondence follows from this symmetry. We will explicitly show that Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and minimal surfaces in AdS_5 are related by the symmetry. The functional form of a supersymmetric Wilson loop operator is naturally derived from our worldsheet point of view.

Non-trivial Tachyon Profiles in Low Energy Effective Theory

We study classical solutions of a low energy effective theory of a string theory with tachyons. With a certain ansatz, we obtain all possible solutions which are weakly coupled and weakly curved. We find, in addition to the interpolating solutions studied in our previous paper, black hole solutions and solutions including the geometry of a capped cylinder. Some possible implications of the solutions to closed string tachyon condensation are discussed.

Tachyon Condensation with B-field

We discuss classical solutions of a graviton-dilaton-B_{μν}-tachyon system. Both constant tachyon solutions, including AdS_3 solutions, and space-dependent tachyon solutions are investigated, and their possible implications to closed string tachyon condensation are argued. The stability issue of the AdS_3 solutions is also discussed.

CFT for Closed String Tachyon Condensation

We construct a class of CFT's which describe space-dependent closed string tachyon backgrounds, as the IR limit of GLSM's in which the FI-parameter is promoted to a superfield. Whole process of tachyon condensation is described by a single CFT. We apply this construction to several examples, in which target space is deformed drastically, and the dilaton background may vary, as a tachyon condenses.

Deformed Type 0A Matrix Model and Super-Liouville Theory for Fermionic Black Holes

We consider a ${\hat c}=1$ model in the fermionic black hole background. For this purpose we consider a model which contains both the N=1 and the N=2 super-Liouville interactions. We propose that this model is dual to a recently proposed type 0A matrix quantum mechanics model with vortex deformations. We support our conjecture by showing that non-perturbative corrections to the free energy computed by both the matrix model and the super-Liouville theories agree exactly by treating the N=2 interaction as a small perturbation. We also show that a two-point function on sphere calculated from the deformed type 0A matrix model is consistent with that of the N=2 super-Liouville theory when the N=1 interaction becomes small. This duality between the matrix model and super-Liouville theories leads to a conjecture for arbitrary $n$-point correlation functions of the N=1 super-Liouville theory on the sphere.

Closed String Tachyon Condensation in Supercritical Strings and RG Flows

We show an explicit relation between an RG flow of a two-dimensional gravity and an on-shell tachyon condensation in the corresponding string theory, in the case when the string theory is supercritical. The shape of the tachyon potential in this case can, in principle, be obtained by examining various RG flows. We also argue that the shape of tachyon potential for a (sub)critical string can be obtained by analyzing a supercritical string which is obtained from the (sub)critical string.

Tachyons in Compact Spaces

We discuss condensations of closed string tachyons localized in compact spaces. Time evolution of an on-shell condensation is naturally related to the worldsheet RG flow. Some explicit tachyonic compactifications of Type II string theory is considered, and some of them are shown to decay into supersymmetric theories known as the little string theories.

Type 0A matrix model of black hole, integrability and holography

We investigate a deformed matrix model of type 0A theory related to supersymmetric Witten's black hole in two-dimensions, generalization of bosonic model suggested by Kazakov et. al. We find a free field realization of the partition function of the matrix model, which includes Ramond-Ramond perturbations in the type 0A theory. In a simple case, the partition function is factorized into two determinants, which are given by $τ$ function of an integrable system. We work out the genus expansion of the partition function. Holographic relation with the supersymmetric Witten's black hole is checked by Wilson line computation. Corresponding partition function of the matrix model exhibits a singular behavior, which is interpreted as the point of enhanced ${\cal N}=2$ worldsheet supersymmetry. Interesting relation of the deformed matrix model and topological string on a $Z_2$ orbifold of conifold is found.
