The redshift selected sample of long gamma-ray burst host galaxies: the overall metallicity distribution at $z < 0.4$

We discuss the host galaxy metallicity distribution of all long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) whose redshifts are known to be $< 0.4$, including newly obtained spectroscopic datasets of the host galaxies of GRB 060614, 090417B, and 130427A. We compare the metallicity distribution of the low-redshift sample to the model predictions, and constrain the relation between metallicity and GRB occurrence. We take account of spatial variation of metallicities among star forming regions within a galaxy. We found that the models, in which only low-metallicity stars produce GRBs with a sharp cutoff of GRB production efficiency around 12+log(O/H) $\sim$ 8.3, can well reproduce the observed distribution, while the models with no metallicity dependence are not consistent with the observations. We also discuss possible sampling biases we may suffer by collecting long GRBs whose redshifts are known, presenting the photometric observations of the host galaxy of GRB 111225A at $z = 0.297$ whose redshift has been undetermined until $\sim$ 2.3 years after the burst.

High Precision Analyses of Lyman alpha Damping Wing of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the Reionization Era: On the Controversial Results from GRB 130606A at z = 5.91

The unprecedentedly bright afterglow of Swift GRB 130606A at z = 5.91 gave us a unique opportunity to probe the reionization era by high precision analyses of the redward damping wing of Ly alpha absorption, but the reported constraints on the neutral hydrogen fraction (f_HI) in intergalactic medium (IGM) derived from spectra taken by different telescopes are in contradiction. Here we examine the origin of this discrepancy by analyzing the spectrum taken by VLT with our own analysis code previously used to fit the Subaru spectrum. Though the VLT team reported no evidence for IGM HI using the VLT spectrum, we confirmed our previous result of preferring non-zero IGM HI (the best-fit f_HI ~ 0.06, when IGM HI extends to the GRB redshift). The fit residuals of the VLT spectrum by the model without IGM HI show the same systematic trend as the Subaru spectrum. We consider that the likely origin of the discrepancy between the two teams is the difference of the wavelength ranges adopted in the fittings; our wavelength range is wider than that of the VLT team, and also we avoided the shortest wavelength range of deep Ly alpha absorption (lambda_obs < 8426 A), because this region is dominated by HI in the host galaxy and the systematic uncertainty about host HI velocity distribution is large. We also study the sensitivity of these results to the adopted Ly alpha cross section formulae, ranging from the classical Lorentzian function to the most recent one taking into account fully quantum mechanical scattering. It is found that the preference for non-zero IGM HI is robust against the choice of the cross section formulae, but it is quantitatively not negligible and hence one should be careful in future analyses.

ALMA Observations of the Submillimeter Dense Molecular Gas Tracers in the Luminous Type-1 Active Nucleus of NGC 7469

We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the central kpc region of the luminous type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with unprecedented high resolution (0.5$"$ $\times$ 0.4$"$ = 165 pc $\times$ 132 pc) at submillimeter wavelengths. Utilizing the wide-bandwidth of ALMA, we simultaneously obtained HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(7-6), and partially CO(3-2) line maps, as well as the 860 $μ$m continuum. The region consists of the central $\sim$ 1$"$ component and the surrounding starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$ 1.5$"$-2.5$"$. Several structures connect these components. Except for CO(3-2), these dense gas tracers are significantly concentrated towards the central $\sim$ 1$"$, suggesting their suitability to probe the nuclear regions of galaxies. Their spatial distribution resembles well those of centimeter and mid-infrared continuum emissions, but it is anti-correlated with the optical one, indicating the existence of dust obscured star formation. The integrated intensity ratios of HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6) are higher at the AGN position than at the starburst ring, which is consistent to our previous findings (submm-HCN enhancement). However, the HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) ratio at the AGN position of NGC 7469 (1.11$\pm$0.06) is almost half of the corresponding value of the low-luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 (2.0$\pm$0.2), despite the more than two orders of magnitude higher X-ray luminosity of NGC 7469. But the ratio is comparable to that of the close vicinity of the AGN of NGC 1068 ($\sim$ 1.5). Based on these results, we speculate that some other heating mechanisms than X-ray (e.g., mechanical heating due to AGN jet) can contribute significantly for shaping the chemical composition in NGC 1097.

OISTER Optical and Near-Infrared Observations of Type Iax Supernova 2012Z

We report observations of the Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2012Z at optical and near-infrared wavelengths from immediately after the explosion until $\sim$ $260$ days after the maximum luminosity using the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) program and the Subaru telescope. We found that the near-infrared (NIR) light curve evolutions and color evolutions are similar to those of SNe Iax 2005hk and 2008ha. The NIR absolute magnitudes ($M_{J}\sim-18.1$ mag and $M_{H}\sim-18.3$ mag) and the rate of decline of the light curve ($Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$=1.6 \pm 0.1$ mag) are very similar to those of SN 2005hk ($M_{J}\sim-17.7$ mag, $M_{H}\sim$$-18.0$ mag, and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim1.6$ mag), yet differ significantly from SNe 2008ha and 2010ae ($M_{J}\sim-14 - -15$ mag and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim2.4-2.7$ mag). The estimated rise time is $12.0 \pm 3.0$ days, which is significantly shorter than that of SN 2005hk or any other Ia SNe. The rapid rise indicates that the $^{56}$Ni distribution may extend into the outer layer or that the effective opacity may be lower than that in normal SNe Ia. The late-phase spectrum exhibits broader emission lines than those of SN 2005hk by a factor of 6--8. Such high velocities of the emission lines indicate that the density profile of the inner ejecta extends more than that of SN 2005hk. We argue that the most favored explosion scenario is a `failed deflagration' model, although the pulsational delayed detonations is not excluded.

Electromagnetic wave propagation and absorption in magnetised plasmas: variational formulations and domain decomposition

We consider a model for the propagation and absorption of electromagnetic waves (in the time-harmonic regime) in a magnetised plasma. We present a rigorous derivation of the model and several boundary conditions modelling wave injection into the plasma. Then we propose several variational formulations, mixed and non-mixed, and prove their well-posedness thanks to a theorem by Sébelin et~al. Finally, we propose a non-overlapping domain decomposition framework, show its well-posedness and equivalence with the one-domain formulation. These results appear strongly linked to the spectral properties of the plasma dielectric tensor.

Discovery of nine extended ionized gas clouds in a z=0.4 cluster

From deep H-alpha imaging data of Suprime-Cam/Subaru, we discovered nine extended ionized gas clouds (EIG) around galaxies in Abell 851 cluster (A851) at z=0.4. We surveyed 30 x 25 arcmin region, and the EIGs were found only near the cluster center (<2.3 arcmin ~ 750 kpc). The parent galaxies of the EIGs are star-forming or post-starburst galaxies, all of which are spectroscopically confirmed members of the cluster. Four out of the nine parent galaxies show distortion of stellar distribution in the disk, which can be a sign of recent interaction, and the interaction may have made EIGs. On the other hand, six parent galaxies (one overlaps those exhibiting distortion) show H-alpha emission without stars, which implies a ram pressure stripping. The spe ctrum of the brightest parent galaxy shows a post-starburst signature, and resembles the H-alpha stripped galaxies found in the Coma cluster. Meanwhile, two brightest parent galaxies in A851 are more massive than the EIG parent galaxies in the Coma cluster. This is consistent with "downsizing" of star-forming galaxies, though it is still in a statistical fluctuation. We also analyzed Suprime-Cam data of another z=0.39 cluster, CL0024+17, but found no EIGs. The key difference between A851 and CL0024+17 would be the existence of a subcluster colliding with the main body of A851, in which six or seven out of the nine parent galaxies in A851 exist, and the fraction of EIGs in the subcluster is significantly higher than the main subcluster of A851 and CL0024+17.

Brane Induced Gravity in the Curved Bulk

Starting with the Nambu-Goto action of the braneworld embedded in a curved bulk, we derive the precise expressions for the quantum induced effects due to small fluctuations of the brane. To define the brane fluctuations invariantly, we introduce the Riemannian coordinate system for the subspace normal to the braneworld. It will turn out that we can systematically incorporate the effects of bulk curvature, and that the induced effects depend on the extrinsic curvature and the normal-connection gauge field as well as on bulk curvature components at the brane.

Probing Intergalactic Neutral Hydrogen by the Lyman Alpha Red Damping Wing of Gamma-Ray Burst 130606A Afterglow Spectrum at z = 5.913

The unprecedentedly bright optical afterglow of GRB 130606A located by Swift at a redshift close to the reionization era (z = 5.913) provides a new opportunity to probe the ionization status of intergalactic medium (IGM). Here we present an analysis of the red Ly alpha damping wing of the afterglow spectrum taken by Subaru/FOCAS during 10.4-13.2 hr after the burst. We find that the minimal model including only the baseline power-law and HI absorption in the host galaxy does not give a good fit, leaving residuals showing concave curvature in 8400-8900 A with an amplitude of about 0.6% of the flux. Such a curvature in the short wavelength range cannot be explained either by extinction at the host with standard extinction curves, intrinsic curvature of afterglow spectra, or by the known systematic uncertainties in the observed spectrum. The red damping wing by intervening HI gas outside the host can reduce the residual by about 3 sigma statistical significance. We find that a damped Ly alpha system is not favored as the origin of this intervening HI absorption, from the observed Ly beta and metal absorption features. Therefore absorption by diffuse IGM remains as a plausible explanation. A fit by a simple uniform IGM model requires HI neutral fraction of f_HI ~ 0.1-0.5 depending on the distance to the GRB host, implying high f_HI IGM associated with the observed dark Gunn-Peterson (GP) troughs. This gives a new evidence that the reionization is not yet complete at z ~ 6.

Extended Lyman-alpha emission from a high-z DLA at z=3.115

We searched for star formation activity associated with high-z Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) with Subaru telescope. We used a set of narrow-band (NB) filters whose central wavelengths correspond to the redshifted Lyman-alpha emission lines of targeted DLA absorbers at 3<z<4.5. We detected one apparent NB-excess object located 3.80 arcsec (~28kpc) away from the quasar SDSS J031036.84+005521.7. Follow-up spectroscopy revealed an asymmetric Lyman-alpha emission at z_em=3.115+/-0.003, which perfectly matches the sub-DLA trough at z_abs=3.1150 with logN(HI)/cm^-2=20.05. The Lyman-alpha luminosity is estimated to be L(LyA)=1.07x10^42 erg s^-1, which corresponds to a star formation rate of 0.97 M_\odot yr^-1. Interestingly, the detected Lyman-alpha emission is spatially extended with a sharp peak. The large extent of the Lyman-alpha emission is remarkably one-sided toward the quasar line-of-sight, and is redshifted. The observed spatially asymmetric surface brightness profile can be qualitatively explained by a model of a DLA host galaxy, assuming a galactic outflow and a clumpy distribution of HI clouds in the circumgalactic medium. This large Lyman-alpha extension, which is similar to those found in Rauch et al. (2008), could be the result of complicated anisotropic radiative transfer through the surrounding neutral gas embedded in the DLA.

Multi-Wavelength Studies of Spectacular Ram Pressure Stripping of a Galaxy: Discovery of an X-ray Absorption Feature

We report the detection of an X-ray absorption feature near the galaxy M86 in the Virgo cluster. The absorber has a column density of 2-3 E20 /cm^2, and its position coincides with the peak of an intracluster HI cloud which was removed from the galaxy NGC 4388 presumably by ram pressure. These results indicate that the HI cloud is located in front of M86 along the line-of-sight, and suggest that the stripping was primarily created by an interaction between NGC 4388 and the hot plasmas of the Virgo cluster, not the M86 halo. By calculating an X-ray temperature map, we further detected an X-ray counterpart of the HI cloud up to about 3' south of M86. It has a temperature of 0.89 keV and a mass of ~4.5 E8 solar mass, exceeding the estimated HI gas mass. The high hot-to-cold gas ratio in the cloud indicates a significant evaporation of the HI gas, probably by thermal conduction from the hotter cluster plasma with a sub-Spitzer rate.

Multi-Wavelength Studies of Spectacular Ram Pressure Stripping of a Galaxy. II. Star Formation in the Tail

With multiband photometric data in public archives, we detected four intracluster star-forming regions in the Virgo cluster. Two of them were at a projected distance of 35 kpc away from NGC4388, and the other two were 66 kpc away. Our new spectroscopic observation revealed that their recession velocities were comparable to the ram-pressure-stripped tail of NGC4388 and confirmed their association. The stellar mass of the star-forming regions ranged from 10^4 - 10^4.5 M_sun except for that of the faintest one which would be <10^3 M_sun. The metallicity was comparable to the solar abundance, and the age of the stars was ~ 10^6.8 years. Their young stellar age meant that the star formation should have started after the gas was stripped from NGC4388. This implied in situ condensation of the stripped gas. We also found that two star-forming regions lay near the leading edge of a filamentary dark cloud. The extinction of the filament was smaller than that derived from the Balmer decrement of the star-forming regions. It implied that the dust in the filament would be locally dense around the star-forming regions.

Dynamical Foundations of the Brane Induced Gravity

We present a comprehensive formalism to derive precise expressions for the induced gravity of the braneworld, assuming the dynamics of the Dirac-Nambu-Goto type. The quantum fluctuations of the brane at short distances give rise to divergences, which should be cutoff at the scale of the inverse thickness of the brane. It turns out that the induced-metric formula is converted into an Einstein-like equation via the quantum effects. We determine the coefficients of the induced cosmological and gravity terms, as well as those of the terms including the extrinsic curvature and the normal connection gauge field. The latter is the characteristic of the brane induced gravity theory, distinguished from ordinary none-brane induced gravity.

The very energetic, broad-lined type Ic Supernova 2010ah (PTF10bzf) in the context of GRB/SNe

SN2010ah, a very broad-lined type Ic SN discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory, was interesting because of its relatively high luminosity and the high velocity of the absorption lines, which was comparable to that of GRB/SNe, suggesting a high explosion kinetic energy. However, no GRB was detected in association with the SN. Here, the properties of SN2010ah are determined with higher accuracy than previous studies through modelling. New Subaru telescope photometry is presented. A bolometric light curve is constructed taking advantage of the spectral similarity with SN1998bw. Radiation transport tools are used to reproduce the spectra and the light curve. The results thus obtained regarding ejecta mass, composition and kinetic energy are then used to compute a synthetic light curve. This is in reasonable agreement with the early bolometric light curve of SN2010ah, but a high abundance of 56Ni at high velocity is required to reproduce the early rise, while a dense inner core must be used to reproduce the slow decline at late phases. The high-velocity 56Ni cannot have been located on our line of sight, which may be indirect evidence for an off-axis, aspherical explosion. The main properties of SN2010ah are: ejected mass ~ 3 Mo; kinetic energy ~10^52 erg, M(56Ni) ~ 0.25 Mo. The mass located at v >~ 0.1c is ~0.2 Mo. Although these values, in particular the kinetic energy, are quite large for a SN Ic, they are all smaller (especially the ejecta mass) than those typical of GRB/SNe. This confirms the tendency for these quantities to correlate, and suggests that there are minimum requirements for a GRB/SN, which SN2010ah may not meet although it comes quite close. Depending on whether a neutron star or a black hole was formed following core collapse, SN2010ah was the explosion of a CO core of ~ 5-6 Mo, pointing to a progenitor mass of ~24 - 28 Mo.

Essential on-Brane Equations for the Braneworld Gravity under the Schwarzschild Ansatz

It is argued that the braneworld gravity under the Schwarzschild ansatz should obey three essential equations on the brane, and they are solved exactly. We express the general solution of the fundamental equations of the braneworld in power series of the brane normal coordinate. The power series are derived by solving three independent components of the bulk Einstein equation, and the coefficients are recursively determined in terms of five functions on the brane. The other components of the bulk Einstein equation are automatically satisfied, as far as the five on-brane functions obey three essential equations. They are the radial-extra and the extra-extra components of the bulk Einstein equation on the brane, and the equation of motion of the brane. Therefore the solution includes two arbitrary functions on the brane. We show that the essential equations are exactly solved by choosing an appropriate set of the two arbitrary functions. The arbitrariness may affect the predictive powers on the Newtonian and the post-Newtonian evidences.

Three-Dimensional Explosion Geometry of Stripped-Envelope Core-Collapse Supernovae. I. Spectropolarimetric Observations

We study the multi-dimensional geometry of supernova (SN) explosions by means of spectropolarimetric observations of stripped-envelope SNe, i.e., SNe without a H-rich layer. We perform spectropolarimetric observations of 2 stripped-envelope SNe, the Type Ib SN 2009jf and the Type Ic SN 2009mi. Both objects show non-zero polarization at the wavelength of the strong lines. They also show a loop in the Stokes Q-U diagram, which indicates a non-axisymmetric, three-dimensional ion distribution in the ejecta. We show that five out of six stripped-envelope SNe which have been observed spectropolarimetrically so far show such a loop. This implies that a three-dimensional geometry is common in stripped-envelope SNe. We find that stronger lines tend to show higher polarization. This effect is not related to the geometry, and must be corrected to compare the polarization of different lines or different objects. Even after the correction, however, there remains a dispersion of polarization degree among different objects. Such a dispersion might be caused by three-dimensional clumpy ion distributions viewed from different directions.

GRB 100418A: a Long GRB without a Bright Supernova in a High-Metallicity Host Galaxy

We present results of a search for a supernova (SN) component associated with GRB 100418A at the redshift of 0.624. The field of GRB 100418A was observed with FOCAS on Subaru 8.2m telescope under a photometric condition (seeing 0.3"-0.4") on 2010 May 14 (UT). The date corresponds to 25.6 days after the burst trigger (15.8 days in the restframe). We did imaging observations in V, Rc, and Ic bands, and two hours of spectrophotometric observations. We got the resolved host galaxy image which elongated 1.6" (= 11 kpc) from north to south. No point source was detected on the host galaxy. The time variation of Rc-band magnitude shows that the afterglow of GRB 100418A has faded to Rc \sim > 24 without SN like rebrightening, when we compare our measurement to the reports in GCN circulars. We could not identify any SN feature such as broad emission-lines or bumps in our spectrum. Assuming the SN is fainter than the 3σ noise spectrum of our observation, we estimate the upper limit on the SN absolute magnitude MIc,obs > -17.2 in observer frame Ic-band. This magnitude is comparable to the faintest type Ic SNe. We also estimate host galaxy properties from the spectrum. The host galaxy of GRB 100418A is relatively massive (log M_{star}/M_{sun} = 9.54) compared to typical long GRB host galaxies, and has 12+log(O/H) = 8.75.

The First Systematic Survey for Lyman Alpha Emitters at z=7.3 with Red-sensitive Subaru/Suprime-Cam

We have performed deep imaging surveys for LyA emitters (LAEs) at redshift ~7.3 in two blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep survey Field (SXDF), using the Subaru/Suprime-Cam equipped with new red-sensitive CCDs and a new narrow-band filter, NB1006 (lambda_c=10052 Ang, FWHM=214 Ang). We identified four objects as LAE candidates that exhibit luminosity excess in NB1006. By carrying out deep follow-up spectroscopy for three of them using Subaru/FOCAS and Keck/DEIMOS, a definitively asymmetric emission line is detected for one of them, SXDF-NB1006-2. Assuming this line is LyA, this object is a LAE at z=7.215 which has luminosity of 1.2^{+1.5}_{-0.6} x 10^43 [erg s-1] and a weighted skewness S_w=4.90+-0.86. Another object, SDF-NB1006-2, shows variable photometry and is thus probably a quasar (QSO) or an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It shows an asymmetric emission line at 10076 Ang, which may be due to either LyA at z=7.288 or [OII] at z=1.703. The third object, SDF-NB1006-1, is likely a galaxy with temporal luminosity enhancement associated with a supernova explosion, as the brightness of this object varies between the observed epochs. Its spectrum does not show any emission lines. The inferred decrease in the number density of LAEs toward higher redshift is n_LyA(z=7.3)/n_LyA(z=5.7) = 0.05^+0.11_-0.05 from z=5.7 to 7.3 down to L(LyA)=1.0 x 10^43 [erg s-1]. The present result is consistent with the interpretation in previous studies that the neutral hydrogen fraction is rapidly increasing from z=5.7 to 7.3.
