Noise Based Detection and Segmentation of Nebulous Objects

A noise-based non-parametric technique for detecting nebulous objects, for example, irregular or clumpy galaxies, and their structure in noise is introduced. "Noise-based" and "non-parametric" imply that this technique imposes negligible constraints on the properties of the targets and that it employs no regression analysis or fittings. The sub-sky detection threshold is defined and initial detections are found, independently of the sky value. False detections are then estimated and removed using the ambient noise as a reference. This results in a purity level of 0.89 for the final detections as compared to 0.29 for SExtractor when a completeness of 1 is desired for a sample of extremely faint and diffuse mock galaxy profiles. The difference in the mean of the undetected pixels with the known background of mock images is decreased by 4.6 times depending on the diffuseness of the test profiles, quantifying the success in their detection. A non-parametric approach to defining substructure over a detected region is also introduced. NoiseChisel is our software implementation of this new technique. Contrary to the existing signal-based approach to detection, in its various implementations, signal-related parameters such as the image point spread function or known object shapes and models are irrelevant here. Such features make this technique very useful in astrophysical applications such as detection, photometry, or morphological analysis of nebulous objects buried in noise, for example, galaxies that do not generically have a known shape when imaged.

Integrality of nearly (holomorphic) Siegel modular forms

In order to considering the integrality of nearly holomorphic (vector-valued) Siegel modular forms, we introduce nearly Siegel modular forms and study their integrality. We show that the integrality of nearly Siegel modular forms in terms of their Fourier expansion implies the integrality of their CM values. Furthermore, we show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between integral nearly Siegel modular forms and integral nearly holomorphic ones. By these results, the integrality of CM values holds for nearly holomorphic Siegel modular forms and for nearly overconvergent p-adic Siegel modular forms.

From Diversity to Dichotomy, and Quenching: Milky-Way-Like and Massive-Galaxy Progenitors at 0.5<z<3.0

Using the HST/WFC3 and ACS multi-band imaging data taken in CANDELS and 3D-HST, we study the general properties and the diversity of the progenitors of the Milky Way (MWs) and local massive galaxy (MGs) at 0.5 < z < 3.0, based on a constant cumulative number density analysis. After careful data reduction and stacking analysis, we conduct a radially resolved pixel SED fitting to obtain the radial distributions of the stellar mass and rest-frame colors. The stellar mass of MWs increases in self-similar way, irrespective of the radial distance, while that of MGs grows in inside-out way where they obtain ~ 75% of the total mass at outer (> 2.5 kpc) radius since z ~ 2. Although the radial mass profiles evolve in distinct ways, the formation and quenching of the central dense region (or bulge) ahead of the outer disk formation are found to be common for both systems. The sudden reddening of bulge at z ~ 1.6 and z ~ 2.4 for MWs and MGs, respectively, suggests the formation of bulge and would give a clue to the different gas accretion histories and quenching. A new approach to evaluate the morphological diversity is conducted by using the average surface density profile and its dispersion. The variety of the radial mass profiles for MGs peaks at higher redshift (z > 2.8), and then rapidly converges to more uniform shape at z < 1.5, while that for MWs remains in the outer region over the redshift. Compared with the observed star formation rates and color profiles, the evolution of variety is consistently explained by the star formation activities.

NIR spectroscopic observation of massive galaxies in the protocluster at z = 3.09

We present the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the $K$-band selected candidate galaxies in the protocluster at $z=3.09$ in the SSA22 field. We observed 67 candidates with $K_{\rm AB}<24$ and confirmed redshifts of the 39 galaxies at $2.0< z_{\rm spec}< 3.4$. Of the 67 candidates, 24 are certainly protocluster members with $3.04\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq 3.12$, which are massive red galaxies those have been unidentified in previous optical observations of the SSA22 protocluster. Many distant red galaxies (DRGs; $J-K_{\rm AB}>1.4$), hyper extremely red objects (HEROs; $J-K_{\rm AB}>2.1$), {\it Spitzer} MIPS 24 $μ$m sources, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as well as the counterparts of Ly$α$ blobs and the AzTEC/ASTE 1.1-mm sources in the SSA22 field are also found to be the protocluster members. The mass of the SSA22 protocluster is estimated to be $\sim2-5\times10^{14}~M_{\odot}$ and this system is plausibly a progenitor of the most massive clusters of galaxies in the current Universe. The reddest ($J-K_{\rm AB}\geq 2.4$) protocluster galaxies are massive galaxies with $M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}~M_{\odot}$ showing quiescent star formation activities and plausibly dominated by old stellar populations. Most of these massive quiescent galaxies host moderately luminous AGNs detected by X-ray. There are no significant differences in the [O{\footnotesize III}] $λ$5007/H$β$ emission line ratios, and [O{\footnotesize III}] $λ$5007 line widths and spatial extents of the protocluster galaxies from those of massive galaxies at $z\sim2-3$ in the general field.

The evolution of galaxy size and morphology at z~0.5-3.0 in the GOODS-N region with HST/WFC3 data

We analyze the recent released HST/WFC3 IR images in the GOODS-N region to study the formation and evolution of Quiescent galaxies (QGs). After examining the reliability with artificial galaxies, we obtain the morphological parameters with S'ersic profile of 299 QGs and 1,083 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z ~ 0.5-3.0, finding the evolution of re and n of massive (M* > 10^10.5 Msun) QGs while weaker evolution of SFGs and less massive (M* < 10^10.5 Msun) QGs. The regression of the size evolution of massive QGs follows re \propto (1 + z)-αre with αre = 1.06 \pm 0.19 (a factor of ~ 2.2 increase from z ~ 2.5 to ~ 0.5), which is consistent with the general picture of the significant size growth. For the further understanding of the evolution scenario, we study the evolution of S'ersic index, n, and find that of massive QGs to significantly evolve as n \propto (1 + z)-αn with αn = 0.74 \pm 0.23 (n ~ 1 at z ~ 2.5 to n ~ 4 at z ~ 0.5), while those of the other populations are unchanged (n ~ 1) over the redshift range. The results in the present study are consistent with both of observation and numerical simulations, where gas-poor minor merger is believed to be the main evolution scenario. By taking account of the connection with less massive QGs and SFGs, we discuss the formation and evolution of the massive QGs over "Cosmic High Noon", or the peak of star-formation in the universe.

The Formation of the massive galaxies in the SSA22 z=3.1 protocluster

The properties of K-band selected galaxies (K_AB<24) in the z = 3.09 SSA22 protocluster field are studied. 430 galaxies at 2.6 < z_phot < 3.6 are selected as potential protocluster members in a 112 arcmin^2 area based on their photometric redshifts. We find that \approx 20% of the massive galaxies with stellar masses >10^11 M_sun at z_phot \sim 3.1 have colors consistent with those of quiescent galaxies with ages > 0.5 Gyr. This fraction increases to \approx 50% after correcting for unrelated foreground/background objects. We also find that 30% of the massive galaxies are heavily reddened dusty star-forming galaxies. Few such quiescent galaxies at similar redshifts are seen in typical survey fields. An excess surface density of 24μm sources at z_phot \sim 3.1 is also observed, implying the presence of dusty star-formation activity in the protocluster. Cross-correlation with the X-ray data indicates that the fraction of K-band selected protocluster galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) is also high compared with the field. The sky distribution of the quiescent galaxies, the 24μm sources, and the X-ray AGNs show clustering around a density peak of z=3.1 Lyαemitters (LAEs). A significant fraction of the massive galaxies have already become quiescent, while the dusty star-formation is still active in the SSA22 protocluster. These findings indicate that we are witnessing the formation epoch of massive early-type galaxies at the center of predecessors to present-day rich galaxy clusters.

Assembly of Massive Galaxies in a High-z Protocluster

We present the results of wide-field deep JHK imaging of the SSA22 field using MOIRCS instrument equipped with Subaru telescope. The observed field is 112 arcmin^2 in area, which covers the z=3.1 protocluster characterized by the overdensities of Ly Alpha emitters (LAEs) and Ly Alpha Blobs (LABs). The 5 sigma limiting magnitude is K_{AB} = 24.3. We extract the potential protocluster members from the K-selected sample by using the multi-band photometric-redshift selection as well as the simple color cut for distant red galaxies (DRGs; J-K_{AB}>1.4). The surface number density of DRGs in our observed fields shows clear excess compared with those in the blank fields, and the location of the densest area whose projected overdensity is twice the average coincides with the large-scale density peak of LAEs. We also found that K-band counterparts with z_{phot} = 3.1 are detected for 75% (15/20) of the LABs within their Ly Alpha halo, and the 40 % (8/20) of LABs have multiple components, which gives a direct evidence of the hierarchical multiple merging in galaxy formation. The stellar mass ofLABs correlates with their luminosity, isophotal area, and the Ly Alpha velocity widths, implying that the physical scale and the dynamical motion of Ly Alpha emission are closely related to their previous star-formation activities. Highly dust-obscured galaxies such as hyper extremely red objects (HEROs; J-K_{AB}>2.1) and plausible K-band counterparts of submillimeter sources are also populated in the high density region.

Motives for elliptic modular groups

In the study of the arithmetic structure of elliptic modular groups which are the fundamental groups of compactified modular curves, these truncated group algebras and their direct sums are considered to construct elliptic modular motives. Our main result is a new theory of Hecke operators on these motives which gives a congruence relation to the Galois action, and their motivic decomposition. Using our Hecke theory, we show that elliptic modular motives are the direct sums of pure motives over certain number fields. This fact implies a kind of algebraicity on iterated Shimura integrals, i.e., multiple L-values of cusp forms of weight 2, and on the periods of modular Ceresa cycles.

Total to central luminosity ratios of quiescent galaxies in MODS as an indicator of size evolution

Using the very deep Subaru images of the GOODS-N region, from the MOIRCS Deep Survey and images from the HST/ACS, we have measured the Luminosity Ratio (LR) of the outer to the central regions of massive (M>10^{10.5}M_{Sun}) galaxies at fixed radii in a single rest-frame for z<3.5 as a new approach to the problem of size evolution. We didn't observe any evolution in the median LR. Had a significant size growth occurred, the outer to central luminosity ratios would have demonstrated a corresponding increase with a decrease in redshift.

A universal stellar-mass and size relation of galaxies in GOODS-N region

We present scaling relations between stellar-mass (Mstar) and the size of galaxies at 0.3 < z < 3 for half- (R_50) and 90 percent-light (R_90) radii, using a deep K-band selected catalogue taken with the Subaru Telescope and MOIRCS in the GOODS-North region. The logarithmic slope R \propto Mstar^{0.1-0.2} is independent of redshift in a wide mass range of Mstar ~ 10^8-10^11 Msun, irrespective of galaxy populations (star-forming, quiescent). The offset change is < 50 percent. Provided that optical light in the rest frame traces the stellar mass of galaxies, the universal relation demonstrates that the stellar mass was built up in galaxies over their cosmic histories in a similar manner on average irrelevant to galaxy mass. The small offset in each stellar mass bin from the universal relation shows weak size evolution at a given mass. There is a moderate increase of 30-50 percent for R_50 and R_90 for less massive galaxies (Mstar < 10^10 Msun) from z~3 to z~1, while the sizes remains unchanged or slightly decrease towards z~0.3. For massive galaxies (Mstar > 10^11 Msun), the evolution is ~70-80 % increase in R_90 from z~3 to z~0.3, though that in R_50 is weaker. The evolution of compactness factor, R_50/R_90, which becomes smaller at lower redshift, is suggestive of minor merging effect in the outer envelope of massive galaxies.

Intrinsic Shape of Star-Forming BzK Galaxies at z~2 in GOODS-N

We study structure of star-forming galaxies at z~2 in GOODS-N field selected as sBzK galaxies down to K_{AB} <24.0 mag. Among 1029 sBzK galaxies, 551 galaxies (54%) show a single component in ACS/F850LP image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope; the rest show multiple components. We fit the single-component sBzK galaxies with the single Sérsic profile using the ACS/F850LP image and find that a majority of them (64%) show Sérsic index of n=0.5-2.5, indicating that they have a disk-like structure. The resulting effective radii typically range from 1.0 to 3.0 kpc in the rest-frame UV wavelength. After correcting the effective radii to those in the rest-frame optical wavelength, we find that the single-component sBzK galaxies locate in the region where the local and z~1 disk galaxies distribute in the stellar mass-size diagram, suggesting comparable surface stellar mass density between the sBzK and z~0-1 disk galaxies. All these properties suggest that the single-component sBzK galaxies are progenitors of the present-day disk galaxies. However, by studying their intrinsic shape through comparison between the observed distribution of apparent axial ratios and the distribution for triaxial models with axes (A>B>C), we find that the mean B/A ratio is 0.61^{+0.05}_{-0.08} and disk thickness C/A is 0.28^{+0.03}_{-0.04}. This indicates that the single-component sBzK galaxies at z~2 have a bar-like or oval shape rather than a round disk shape. The shape seems to resemble to a bar/oval structure that form through bar instability; if it is the case, the intrinsic shape may give us a clue to understand dynamical evolution of baryonic matter in a dark matter halo.

Cryogenic Volume-Phase Holograpic Grisms for MOIRCS

We have developed high dispersion VPH (volume phase holographic) grisms with zinc selenide (ZnSe) prisms for the cryogenic optical system of MOIRCS (Multi-Object near InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph) for Y-, J-, H- and K- band observations. We fabricated the VPH gratings using a hologram resin. After several heat cycles at between room temperature and 120 K, the VPH gratings were assembled to grisms by gluing with two ZnSe prisms. Several heat cycles were also carried out for the grisms before being installed into MOIRCS. We measured the efficiencies of the VPH grisms in a laboratory, and found them to be 70% - 82%. The performances obtained by observations of MOIRCS with the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope have been found to be very consistent with the results in the laboratory test. This is the first astronomical application of cryogenic VPH grisms.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. IX. Deep Near-Infrared Imaging Data and Source Catalog

We present deep J-, H-, and Ks-band imaging data of the MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS), which was carried out with Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) mounted on the Subaru telescope in the GOODS-North region. The data reach 5sigma total limiting magnitudes for point sources of J=23.9, H=22.8, and Ks=22.8 (Vega magnitude) over 103 arcmin^2 (wide field). In 28 arcmin^2 of the survey area, which is ultra deep field of the MODS (deep field), the data reach the 5sigma depths of J=24.8, H=23.4, and Ks=23.8. The spatial resolutions of the combined images are FWHM ~ 0.6 arcsec and ~ 0.5 arcsec for the wide and deep fields in all bands, respectively. Combining the MODS data with the multi-wavelength public data taken with the HST, Spitzer, and other ground-based telescopes in the GOODS field, we construct a multi-wavelength photometric catalog of Ks-selected sources. Using the catalog, we present Ks-band number counts and near-infrared color distribution of the detected objects, and demonstrate some selection techniques with the NIR colors for high redshift galaxies. These data and catalog are publicly available via internet.

Discovery of an Excess of Halpha Emitters around 4C 23.56 at z=2.48

We report the discovery of a significant excess of candidate Halpha emitters (HAEs) in the field of the radio galaxy 4C 23.56 at z=2.483. Using the MOIRCS near-infrared imager on the Subaru Telescope we found 11 candidate emission-line galaxies to a flux limit of ~7.5 10^-17 erg s-1 cm-2, which is about 5 times excess from the expected field counts with ~3-sigma significance. Three of these are spectroscopically confirmed as redshifted Halpha at z=2.49. The distribution of candidate emitters on the sky is tightly confined to a 1.2-Mpc-radius area at z=2.49, locating 4C 23.56 at the western edge of the distribution. Analysis of the deep Spitzer MIPS 24 mu m imaging shows that there is also an excess of faint MIPS sources. All but two of the 11 HAEs are also found in the MIPS data. The inferred star-formation rate (SFR) of the HAEs based on the extinction-corrected Halpha luminosity (median SFR >~100 M_solar yr-1) is similar to those of HAEs in random fields at z~2. On the other hand, the MIPS-based SFR for the HAEs is on average 3.6 times larger, suggesting the existence of the star-formation significanly obscured by dust. The comparison of the Halpha-based star-formation activities of the HAEs in the 4C 23.56 field to those in another proto-cluster around PKS 1138-262 at z=2.16 reveals that the latter tend to have fainter Halpha emission despite similar K-band magnitudes. This suggests that star-formation may be suppressed in the PKS 1138-262 protocluster relative to the 4C 23.56 protocluster. This difference among the HAEs in the two proto-clusters at z > 2 may imply that some massive cluster galaxies are just forming at these epochs with some variation among clusters.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. VII: NIR Morphologies of Star-forming Galaxies at Redshift z~1

We investigate rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) morphologies of a sample of 139 galaxies with M_{s} >= 1 x 10^{10} M_{sun} at z=0.8-1.2 in the GOODS-North field using our deep NIR imaging data (MOIRCS Deep Survey, MODS). We focus on Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), which dominate high star formation rate (SFR) density at z~1, in the sample identified by cross-correlating with the Spitzer/MIPS 24um source catalog. We perform two-dimensional light profile fitting of the z~1 galaxies in the Ks-band (rest-frame J-band) with a single component Sersic model. We find that at z~1, ~90% of LIRGs have low Sersic indices (n<2.5, similar to disk-like galaxies) in the Ks-band, and those disk-like LIRGs consist of ~60% of the whole disk-like sample above M_{s} >= 3 x 10^{10} M_{sun}. The z~1 disk-like LIRGs are comparable or ~20% small at a maximum in size compared to local disk-like galaxies in the same stellar mass range. If we examine rest-frame UV-optical morphologies using the HST/ACS images, the rest-frame B-band sizes of the z~1 disk-like galaxies are comparable to those of the local disk-like galaxies as reported by previous studies on size evolution of disk-like galaxies in the rest-frame optical band. Measuring color gradients (galaxy sizes as a function of wavelength) of the z~1 and local disk-like galaxies, we find that the z~1 disk-like galaxies have 3-5 times steeper color gradient than the local ones. Our results indicate that (i) more than a half of relatively massive disk-like galaxies at z~1 are in violent star formation epochs observed as LIRGs, and also (ii) most of those LIRGs are constructing their fundamental disk structure vigorously. The high SFR density in the universe at z~1 may be dominated by such star formation in disk region in massive galaxies.
