Nonlinear dynamics driving the conversion of gravitational and electromagnetic waves in cylindrically symmetric spacetime

Using the ``composite harmonic mapping method," we construct exact solutions for cylindrically symmetric gravitational and electromagnetic waves within the Einstein-Maxwell system, focusing on the conversion dynamics between these types of waves. In this approach, we employs two types of geodesic surfaces in ${\mathbb H}^{2}_{C}$: (a) the complex line and (b) the totally real Lagrangian plane, applied to two different vacuum seed solutions: (i) a vacuum solution previously utilized in our studies and (ii) the solitonic vacuum solution constructed previously by Economou and Tsoubelis. We study three scenarios: case (a) with seeds (i) and (ii), and case (b) with seed (ii). In all cases (a) and (b), solutions demonstrate notable mode conversions near the symmetric axis. In case (a) with seed (i) or seed (ii), we show that any change in the occupancy of the gravitational or electromagnetic mode relative to the C-energy near the axis always reverts to its initial state once the wave moves away from the axis. Particularly in case (b) with seed (ii), nontrivial conversions occur even when the wave moves away from the axis. In this case, the amplification factors of electromagnetic modes range from an upper limit of approximately $2.4$ to a lower limit of about $0.4$, when comparing the contributions of electromagnetic mode to C-energy at past and future null infinities.

Conversion of gravitational and electromagnetic waves without any external background fields

Applying a simple harmonic map method to the cylindrically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell system, we obtain exact solutions representing strong nonlinear interaction between gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves in the case without any background field. As an interesting fact, we can show that with adjusted parameters the solutions represent occurrences of large conversion phenomena in the intense region of fields near the cylindrically symmetric axis.

A stationary and biaxisymmetric four-soliton solution in five dimensions

Using the inverse scattering method to solve the five-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations, we construct an asymptotically flat four-soliton solution as a stationary and bi-axisymmetric solution. We impose certain boundary conditions on this solution so that it includes a rotating black hole whose horizon-cross section is topologically a lens space of L(2,1). The solution has nine parameters but three only is physically independent due to the constraint equations. The remaining degrees of freedom correspond to the mass and two independent angular momenta of the black hole. We analyze a few simple cases in detail, in particular, the static case with two zero-angular momenta and the stationary case with a single non-zero angular momentum.

Construction and application of variations on the cylindrical gravitational waves of Weber, Wheeler, and Bonnor

To clarify certain nonlinear properties of strong gravitational field, we investigate cylindrically symmetric gravitational waves that are localized as regular wave packets in the space of radial and time coordinates. The waves are constructed by applying a certain kind of harmonic mapping method to the seed solutions with linear polarization, which are generalizations of the solution representing a cylindrical gravitational pulse wave discussed by Weber-Wheeler and Bonnor. The solutions obtained here, though their form is rather simple, show occurrence of strong mutual conversion between a linear mode and a cross mode apparently. The single localized wave shows the conversion in the vicinity of the symmetric axis where the self-interaction is strengthened, and the collision between multiple waves also causes the conversion. These phenomena can be thought to be the emergence of genuine nonlinearity that the Einstein gravity holds. Finally we discuss a simple, but interesting application of the solutions to the case of the Einstein-Maxwell system.

Non-linear effects for cylindrical gravitational two-soliton

Using a cylindrical soliton solution to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation, we study non-linear effects of gravitational waves such as Faraday rotation and time shift phenomenon. In the previous work, we analyzed the single-soliton solution constructed by the Pomeransky's improved inverse scattering method. In this work, we construct a new two-soliton solution with complex conjugate poles, by which we can avoid light-cone singularities unavoidable in a single soliton case. In particular, we compute amplitudes of such non-linear gravitational waves and time-dependence of the polarizations. Furthermore, we consider the time shift phenomenon for soliton waves, which means that a wave packet can propagate at slower velocity than light.

New cylindrical gravitational soliton waves and gravitational Faraday rotation

In terms of gravitational solitons, we study gravitational non-linear effects of gravitational solitary waves such as Faraday rotation. Applying the Pomeransky's procedure for inverse scattering method, which has been recently used for constructing stationary black hole solutions in five dimensions to a cylindrical spacetime in four dimensions, we construct a new cylindrically symmetric soliton solution. This is the first example to be applied to the cylindrically symmetric case. In particular, we clarify the difference from the Tomimatsu's single soliton solution, which was constructed by the Belinsky-Zakharov's procedure.

Systematic solution-generation of five-dimensional black holes

Solitonic solution-generating methods are powerful tools to construct nontrivial black hole solutions of the higher-dimensional Einstein equations systematically. In five dimensions particularly, the solitonic methods can be successfully applied to the construction of asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes with multiple horizons. We review the solitonic methods applicable to higher-dimensional vacuum spacetimes and present some five-dimensional examples derived from the methods.

Thermodynamic black di-rings

Previously the five dimensional $S^1$-rotating black rings have been superposed in a concentric way by some solitonic methods, and regular systems of two $S^1$-rotating black rings were constructed by the authors and then Evslin and Krishnan (we called these solutions "black di-rings"). In this place we show some characteristics of the solutions of five dimensional black di-rings, especially in thermodynamic equilibrium. After the summary of the di-ring expressions and their physical quantities, first we comment on the equivalence of the two different solution sets of the black di-rings. Then the existence of thermodynamic black di-rings is shown, in which both isothermality and isorotation between the inner black ring and the outer black ring are realized. We also give detailed analysis of peculiar properties of the thermodynamic black di-ring including discussion about a certain kind of thermodynamic stability (instability) of the system.

Black diring and infinite nonuniqueness

We show that the $S^1$-rotating black rings can be superposed by the solution generating technique. We analyze the black diring solution for the simplest case of multiple rings. There exists an equilibrium black diring where the conical singularities are cured by the suitable choice of physical parameters. Also there are infinite numbers of black dirings with the same mass and angular momentum. These dirings can have two different continuous limits of single black rings. Therefore we can transform the fat black ring to the thin ring with the same mass and angular momentum by way of the diring solutions.

Boosted Black Holes on Kaluza-Klein Bubbles

We construct an exact stationary solution of black hole -- bubble sequence in the five dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory by using solitonic solution generating techniques. The solution describes two boosted black holes with topology S^3 on a Kaluza-Klein bubble and has a linear momentum component in the compactified direction. The ADM mass and the linear momentum depend on the two boosted velocity parameters of black holes. In the effective four dimensional theory, the solution has an electric charge which is proportional to the linear momentum. The solution includes the static solution found by Elvang and Horowitz and a limit of single boosted black string.

Rotating Black Holes on Kaluza-Klein Bubbles

Using the solitonic solution generating techniques, we generate a new exact solution which describes a pair of rotating black holes on a Kaluza-Klein bubble as a vacuum solution in the five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. We also investigate the properties of this solution. Two black holes with topology S^3 are rotating along the same direction and the bubble plays a role in holding two black holes. In static case, it coincides with the solution found by Elvang and Horowitz.

Solitonic generation of vacuum solutions in five-dimensional General Relativity

We describe a solitonic solution-generating technique for the five-dimensional General Relativity. Reducing the five-dimensional problem to the four-dimensional one, we can systematically obtain single-rotational axially symmetric vacuum solutions. Applying the technique for a simple seed solution, we have previously obtained the series of stationary solutions which includes $S^2$-rotating black ring. We analyze the qualitative features of these solutions, e.g., conical singularities, closed timelike curves, and spacetime curvatures. We investigate the rod structures of seed and solitonic solutions. We examine the relation between the expressions of the metric in the prolate-spheroidal coordinates and in the C-metric coordinates.

Relationship Between Solitonic Solutions of Five-Dimensional Einstein Equations

We give the relation between the solutions generated by the inverse scattering method and the Bäcklund transformation applied to the vacuum five-dimensional Einstein equations. In particular, we show that the two-solitonic solutions generated from an arbitrary diagonal seed by the Bäcklund transformation are contained within those generated from the same seed by the inverse scattering method.

Solitonic generation of five-dimensional black ring solution

Using the solitonic solution-generating technique we rederived the one-rotational five-dimensional black ring solution found by Emparan and Reall. The seed solution is not the Minkowski metric, which is the seed of $S^2$-rotating black ring. The obtained solution has more parameters than the Emparan and Reall's $S^1$-rotating black ring. We found the conditions of parameters to reduce the solution to the $S^1$-rotating black ring. In addition we examined the relation between the expressions of the metric in the prolate-spheroidal coordinates and in the canonical coordinates.

New Axisymmetric Stationary Solutions of Five-dimensional Vacuum Einstein Equations with Asymptotic Flatness

New axisymmetric stationary solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in five-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes are obtained by using solitonic solution-generating techniques. The new solutions are shown to be equivalent to the four-dimensional multi-solitonic solutions derived from particular class of four-dimensional Weyl solutions and to include different black rings from those obtained by Emparan and Reall.

Hoop Conjecture and Cosmic Censorship in the Brane-World

The initial data of gravity for a cylindrical matter distribution confined on the brane is studied in the framework of the single brane Randall-Sundrum scenario. In this scenario, 5-dimensional aspect of gravity appears in the short range gravitational interaction. We found that the sufficiently thin configuration of matter leads to the formation of the marginal surface even if the configuration is infinitely long. This means that the hoop conjecture proposed by Thorne does not hold in the Randall-Sundrum scenario; Even if a mass $M$ does not get compacted into a region whose circumference in every direction is ${\cal C}\le 4πGM$, black holes with horizons can form in the Randall-Sundrum scenario.

Perturbing Supersymmetric Black Hole

An investigation of the perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in the $N=2$ supergravity is presented. We prove in the extremal limit that the black hole responds to the perturbation of each field in the same manner. We conjecture that we can match the modes of the graviton, gravitino and photon because of supersymmetry transformations.

Quasinormal modes of maximally charged black holes

A new algorithm for computing the accurate values of quasinormal frequencies of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes is presented. The numerically computed values are consistent with the values earlier obtained by Leaver and those obtained through the WKB method. Our results are more precise than other results known to date. We also find a curious fact that the resonant frequencies of gravitational waves with multi-pole index $l$ coincide with those of electromagnetic waves with multi-pole index $l-1$ in the extremal limit.
