Noncollinear magnetism and spin-orbit coupling in 5d pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7

We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore oxide Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ using the density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion ($U$) method, and depict the ground-state phase diagram with respect to $U$. We conclude that the all-in/all-out non-collinear magnetic order is stable in a wide range of $U$. We also show that the easy-axis anisotropy arising from the spin-orbit (SO) coupling plays a significant role in stabilizing the all-in/all-out magnetic order. A \textit{pseudo gap} was observed near the transition between the antiferromagnetic metallic and insulating phases. Finally, we discuss possible origins of the peculiar low-temperature($T$) properties observed in experiments.

First-principles structural optimization and electronic structure of the superconductor picene for various potassium doping levels

We theoretically explore the crystal structures of K$_x$picene, for which a new aromatic superconductivity has recently been discovered for $x=3$, by systematically performing first-principles full structural optimization covering the concentration range $x=1$-4. The crystal symmetry (space group) of the pristine picene is shown to be preserved in all the optimized structures despite significant deformations of each picene molecule and vast rearrangements of herringbone array of molecules. For K$_x$picene ($x=1$-4) optimization indicates that (i) multiple structures exist in some cases, and (ii) dopants can enter not only in the interlayer region between the stack of herringbone structures, but also in the intralayer region. In the electronic structure obtained with the local density approximation for the optimized structures, the dopants are shown to affect the electronic properties not only through the rearrangement and distortion of molecules, but also molecule-metal atom hybridization. In other words, the rigid-band approximation is invalidated for multifold reasons. As a consequence the resultant Fermi surface exhibits a variety of multiband structures which take diverse topology for K$_1$picene and K$_3$picene.

First-principles Electronic Structure of Superconductor Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$P$_2$: Comparison with LaFePO and Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the electronic structures of iron-based superconductors having perovskite-like blocking layers, %Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ from first principles. Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$P$_2$ and Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$As$_2$ from first principles. Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$P$_2$ is found to have two hole-like Fermi surfaces around $Γ$, and one hole-like Fermi surface around M in the unfolded Brillouin zone. This is in contrast with LaFePO, where no Fermi surface is found around M. The relationship of their band structures and measured transition temperatures of superconductivity is discussed. The number of Fermi surfaces in Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$P$_2$ is also different from that of Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$As$_2$, in which only one Fermi surface is formed around $Γ$. Analysis using maximally localized Wannier functions clarifies that the differences between their band structures originate mainly from the pnictogen height. We then analyze the alloying effect on the electronic structure of Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$AsP. It is found that its electronic structure is similar to that of Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$P$_2$ and Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with the average crystal structure, though Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$AsP contains the pnictogen height disorder. We calculate the generalized susceptibility for Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ and clarify the factors determining its tendency.

Satellites and large doping- and temperature-dependence of electronic properties in hole-doped BaFe2As2

Over the last years, superconductivity has been discovered in several families of iron-based compounds. Despite intense research, even basic electronic properties of these materials, such as Fermi surfaces, effective electron masses, or orbital characters are still subject to debate. Here, we address an issue that has not been considered before, namely the consequences of dynamical screening of the Coulomb interactions among Fe-d electrons. We demonstrate its importance not only for correlation satellites seen in photoemission spectroscopy, but also for the low-energy electronic structure. From our analysis of the normal phase of BaFe2As2 emerges the picture of a strongly correlated compound with strongly doping- and temperature-dependent properties. In the hole overdoped regime, an incoherent metal is found, while Fermi-liquid behavior is recovered in the undoped compound. At optimal doping, the self-energy exhibits an unusual square-root energy dependence which leads to strong band renormalizations near the Fermi level.

Electronic structure of solid coronene: differences and commonalities to picene

We have obtained the first-principles electronic structure of solid coronene, which has been recently discovered to exhibit superconductivity with potassium doping. Since coronene, along with picene, the first aromatic superconductor, now provide a class of superconductors as solids of aromatic compounds, here we compare the two cases in examining the electronic structures. In the undoped coronene crystal, where the molecules are arranged in a herringbone structure with two molecules in a unit cell, the conduction band above an insulating gap is found to comprise four bands, which basically originate from the lowest two unoccupied molecular orbitals (doubly-degenerate, reflecting the high symmetry of the molecular shape) in an isolated molecule but the bands are entangled as in solid picene. The Fermi surface for a candidate of the structure of K$_x$coronene with $x=3$, for which superconductivity is found, comprises multiple sheets, as in doped picene but exhibiting a larger anisotropy with different topology.

Slab Thickness Dependence of Rashba Splitting on Au(111) Surface: First-Principles and Model Analyses

We study the dependence of the spin splitting on the number $N$ of atomic layers, using first-principles calculation for Au(111) surface. When the slab of the atomic layers is sufficiently thick, the lower split state has a minimum away from $\barΓ$, which is known as the Rashba effect. As the number of layers decreases, the minimum approaches $\barΓ$, and it is located at $\barΓ$ for $N \leq 14$. This crossover is analyzed in detail using two models: a tight-binding model and a bilayer nearly-free-electron model. It is demonstrated that the features of surface band dispersion are clearly understood as the result of the competition between the interference of the surface states on both sides and the spin-orbit interaction.

The coherence-incoherence crossover and the mass-renormalization puzzles in Sr2RuO4

We calculate the electronic structure of Sr2RuO4, treating correlations in the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. The approach successfully reproduces several experimental results and explains the key properties of this material: the anisotropic mass renormalization of quasiparticles and the crossover into an incoherent regime at a low temperature. While the orbital differentiation originates from the proximity of the van Hove singularity, strong correlations are caused by the Hund's coupling. The generality of this mechanism for other correlated materials is pointed out.

Electronic Structure of Novel Superconductor Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2

We have performed the first-principles electronic structure calculation for the novel superconductor Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 which has the smallest a lattice parameter and the largest As height from the Fe plane among the Fe-As superconductors. We find that one of the hole-like Fermi surfaces is missing around the Gamma point compared to the case of LaFeAsO. Analysis using the maximally-localized-Wannier-function technique indicates that the xy orbital becomes more localized as the As-Fe-As angle decreases. This induces rearrangement of bands, which results in the change of the Fermi-surface topology of Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 from that of LaFeAsO. The strength of electron correlation is also evaluated using the constraint RPA method, and it turns out that Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 is more correlated than LaFeAsO.

Theoretical evidence for strong correlations and incoherent metallic state in FeSe

The role of electronic Coulomb correlations in iron-based superconductors is an important open question. We provide theoretical evidence for strong correlation effects in the FeSe compound, based on dynamical mean field calculations. A lower Hubbard band is found in the spectral properties. Moreover, together with significant orbital-dependent mass enhancements, we find that the normal state is a bad metal over an extended temperature range, implying a non-Fermi liquid. Predictions for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are made.

Electronic Structure Calculation by First Principles for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Recent trends of ab initio studies and progress in methodologies for electronic structure calculations of strongly correlated electron systems are discussed. The interest for developing efficient methods is motivated by recent discoveries and characterizations of strongly correlated electron materials and by requirements for understanding mechanisms of intriguing phenomena beyond a single-particle picture. A three-stage scheme is developed as renormalized multi-scale solvers (RMS) utilizing the hierarchical electronic structure in the energy space. It provides us with an ab initio downfolding of the global band structure into low-energy effective models followed by low-energy solvers for the models. The RMS method is illustrated with examples of several materials. In particular, we overview cases such as dynamics of semiconductors, transition metals and its compounds including iron-based superconductors and perovskite oxides, as well as organic conductors of kappa-ET type.

Comparison of Ab initio Low-Energy Models for LaFePO, LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2, LiFeAs, FeSe and FeTe: Electron Correlation and Covalency

Effective low-energy Hamiltonians for several different families of iron-based superconductors are compared after deriving them from the downfolding scheme based on first-principles calculations. Systematic dependences of the derived model parameters on the families are elucidated, many of which are understood from the systematic variation of the covalency between Fe-3d and pnictogen-/chalcogen-p orbitals.

First-Principles Electronic Structure of Solid Picene

To explore the electronic structure of the first aromatic superconductor, potassium-doped solid picene which has been recently discovered by Mitsuhashi et al with the transition temperatures $T_c=7 - 20$ K, we have obtained a first-principles electronic structure of solid picene as a first step toward the elucidation of the mechanism of the superconductivity. The undoped crystal is found to have four conduction bands, which are characterized in terms of the maximally localized Wannier orbitals. We have revealed how the band structure reflects the stacked arrangement of molecular orbitals for both undoped and doped (K$_3$picene) cases, where the bands are not rigid. The Fermi surface for K$_3$picene is a curious composite of a warped two-dimensional surface and a three-dimensional one.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory within an Augmented Plane-Wave Framework: Assessing Electronic Correlations in the Iron Pnictide LaFeAsO

We present an approach that combines the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the framework of the full-potential linear augmented plane waves (FLAPW) method. Wannier-like functions for the correlated shell are constructed by projecting local orbitals onto a set of Bloch eigenstates located within a certain energy window. The screened Coulomb interaction and Hund's coupling are calculated from a first-principle constrained RPA scheme. We apply this LDA+DMFT implementation, in conjunction with continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo, to study the electronic correlations in LaFeAsO. Our findings support the physical picture of a metal with intermediate correlations. The average value of the mass renormalization of the Fe 3d bands is about 1.6, in reasonable agreement with the picture inferred from photoemission experiments. The discrepancies between different LDA+DMFT calculations (all technically correct) which have been reported in the literature are shown to have two causes: i) the specific value of the interaction parameters used in these calculations and ii) the degree of localization of the Wannier orbitals chosen to represent the Fe 3d states, to which many-body terms are applied. The latter is a fundamental issue in the application of many-body calculations, such as DMFT, in a realistic setting. We provide strong evidence that the DMFT approximation is more accurate and more straightforward to implement when well-localized orbitals are constructed from a large energy window encompassing Fe-3d, As-4p and O-2p, and point out several difficulties associated with the use of extended Wannier functions associated with the low-energy iron bands. Some of these issues have important physical consequences, regarding in particular the sensitivity to the Hund's coupling.

Ab-initio procedure for effective models of correlated materials with entangled band structure

We present a first-principles method for deriving effective low-energy models of electrons in solids having entangled band structure. The procedure starts with dividing the Hilbert space into two subspaces, the low-energy part ("$d$ space'') and the rest of the space ("$r$ space''). The low-energy model is constructed for the $d$ space by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the $r$ space. The thus derived model contains the strength of electron correlation expressed by a partially screened Coulomb interaction, calculated in the constrained random-phase-approximation (cRPA) where screening channels within the $d$ space, $P_d$, are subtracted. One conceptual problem of this established downfolding method is that for entangled bands it is not clear how to cut out the $d$ space and how to distinguish $P_d$ from the total polarization. Here, we propose a simple procedure to overcome this difficulty. In our scheme, the $d$ subspace is cut out from the Hilbert space of the Kohn Sham eigenfunctions with the help of a procedure to construct a localized Wannier basis. The $r$ subspace is constructed as the complementary space orthogonal to the $d$ subspace. After this disentanglement, $P_d$ becomes well defined. Using the disentangled bands, the effective parameters are uniquely determined in the cRPA. The method is successfully applied to 3$d$ transition metals.

Screened Coulomb interaction in the maximally localized Wannier basis

We discuss a maximally localized Wannier function approach for constructing lattice models from first-principles electronic structure calculations, where the effective Coulomb interactions are calculated in the constrained random-phase-approximation. The method is applied to the 3d transition metals and a perovskite (SrVO_3). We also optimize the Wannier functions by unitary transformation so that U is maximized. Such Wannier functions unexpectedly turned out to be very close to the maximally localized ones.

Electronic properties of alkali-metal loaded zeolites -- a "supercrystal" Mott insulator

First-principles band calculations are performed for the first time for an open-structured zeolite (LTA) with guest atoms (potassium) introduced in their cages. A surprisingly simple band structure emerges, which indicates that this system may be regarded as a "supercrystal", where each cluster of guest atoms with diameter $\sim$10Åacts as a "superatom" with well-defined $s$- and $p$-like orbitals, which in turn form the bands around the Fermi energy. The calculated Coulomb and exchange energies for these states turn out to be in the strongly-correlated regime. With the dynamical mean-field theory we show the system should be on the Mott-insulator side, and, on a magnetic phase diagram for degenerate-orbital systems, around the ferromagnetic regime, in accord with experimental results. We envisage this class of systems can provide a new avenue for materials design.
