Application of density functional theory to line broadening: Cs atoms in liquid helium

We test the applicability of density functional theory (DFT) to spectral perturbations taking an example of a Cs atom surrounded by superfluid helium. The atomic DFT of helium is used to obtain the distribution of helium atoms around the impurity atom, and the electronic DFT is applied to the excitations of the atom, averaging over the ensemble of helium configurations. The shift and broadening of the D1 and D2 absorption lines are quite well reproduced by theory, suggesting that the DFT may be useful for describing spectral perturbations in more complex environments.

3D real-space calculations of continuum response

We present linear response theories in the continuum capable of describing continuum spectra and dynamical correlations of finite systems with no spatial symmetry. Our formulation is essentially the same as the continuum random-phase approximation (RPA) but suitable for uniform grid representation in the three-dimensional (3D) Cartesian coordinate. Effects of the continuum are taken into account by solving equations iteratively with a retarded Green's function. The method is applied to photoabsorption spectra in small molecules (acetylene and ethylene) and inelastic electron scattering from a deformed nucleus 12C.

Resonance and continuum states in weakly bound systems

Linear response theories in the continuum capable of describing continuum spectra and dynamical correlations are presented. Our formulation is essentially the same as the continuum random-phase approximation (RPA) but suitable for uniform grid representation in the three-dimensional (3D) Cartesian coordinate assuming no spatial symmetry. Effects of the continuum are taken into account either by solving equations iteratively with a retarded Green's function or by an absorbing boundary condition. The methods are applied to giant resonances in a deformed nucleus 12C.

Photoabsorption spectra in the continuum of molecules and atomic clusters

We present linear response theories in the continuum capable of describing photoionization spectra and dynamic polarizabilities of finite systems with no spatial symmetry. Our formulations are based on the time-dependent local density approximation with uniform grid representation in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate. Effects of the continuum are taken into account either with a Green's function method or with a complex absorbing potential in a real-time method. The two methods are applied to a negatively charged cluster in the spherical jellium model and to some small molecules (silane, acetylene and ethylene).

A basis of cranking operators for the pairing-plus-quadrupole model

We investigate the RPA normal-mode coordinates in the pairing-plus-quadrupole model, with an eye on simplifying the application of large amplitude collective motion techniques. At the Hartree-Bogoliubov minimum, the RPA modes are exactly the cranking operators of the collective coordinate approach. We examine the possibility of representing the self-consistent cranking operator by linear combinations of a limited number of one-body operators. We study the Sm nuclei as an example, and find that such representations exist in terms of operators that are state-dependent in a characteristic manner.

Collective coordinates, shape transitions and shape coexistence: a microscopic approach

We investigate a description of shape-mixing and shape-transitions using collective coordinates. To that end we apply a theory of adiabatic large-amplitude motion to a simplified nuclear shell-model, where the approximate results can be contrasted with exact diagonalisations. We find excellent agreement for different regimes, and contrast the results with those from a more standard calculation using a quadrupole constraint. We show that the method employed in this work selects diabatic (crossing) potential energy curves where these are appropriate, and discuss the implications for a microscopic study of shape coexistence.

Diabatic and Adiabatic Collective Motion in a Model Pairing System

Large amplitude collective motion is investigated for a model pairing Hamiltonian containing an avoided level crossing. A classical theory of collective motion for the adiabatic limit is applied utilising either a time-dependent mean-field theory or a direct parametrisation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. A modified local harmonic equation is formulated to take account of the Nambu-Goldstone mode. It turns out that in some cases the system selects a diabatic path. Requantizing the collective Hamiltonian, a reasonable agreement with an exact calculation for the low-lying levels are obtained for both weak and strong pairing force. This improves on results of the conventional Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

Large Amplitude Collective Motion in Nuclei and Metallic Clusters: Applicability of adiabatic theory for a pairing model

A model Hamiltonian describing a two-level system with a crossing plus a pairing force is investigated using technique of large-amplitude collective motion. The collective path, which is determined by the decoupling conditions, is found to be almost identical to the one in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the case of a strong pairing force. For the weak pairing case, the obtained path describes a diabatic dynamics of the system.

Microscopic Structure of High-Spin Vibrational States in Superdeformed A=190 Nuclei

Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the quadrupole and octupole correlations for excited superdeformed (SD) bands in even-even A=190 nuclei. The K=2 octupole vibrations are predicted to be the lowest excitation modes at zero rotational frequency. The Coriolis coupling at finite frequency produces different effects depending on the neutron and proton number of nucleus. The calculations also indicate that some collective excitations may produce J(2) moments of inertia almost identical to those of the yrast SD band. An interpretation of the observed excited bands invoking the octupole vibrations is proposed, which suggests those octupole vibrations may be prevalent in even-even SD A=190 nuclei.

Heuristic quantization of the cranking model

We propose a simple and systematic method to quantize the cranking model and to calculate the matrix elements of intrinsic operators entering the generalized intensity relations. An example of the application is given to show the Coriolis coupling effects for B(E3) values of the 3- octupole states in Gd isotopes.

A New Microscopic Approach to the Rotational Intensity Relations

The intensity relations for electromagnetic transition rates in the rotational coupling scheme have been a basic tool to understand the properties of nuclear collective rotations. In particular the correction terms to the leading-order relation give the response of the intrinsic motion to the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. We propose a simple and systematic method to calculate the matrix elements of intrinsic operators entering the generalized intensity relations that uses the microscopic cranking formalism. Examples are given to show the usefulness of the method.

Microscopic Structure of High-Spin Vibrational Excitations in Superdeformed 190,192,194Hg

Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the quadrupole and octupole correlations for excited superdeformed bands in 190Hg, 192Hg, and 194Hg. The K=2 octupole vibrations are predicted to be the lowest excitation modes at zero rotational frequency. At finite frequency, however, the interplay between rotation and vibrations produces different effects depending on neutron number: The lowest octupole phonon is rotationally aligned in 190Hg, is crossed by the aligned two-quasiparticle bands in 192Hg, and retains the K=2 octupole vibrational character up to the highest frequency in 194Hg. The gamma vibrations are predicted to be higher in energy and less collective than the octupole vibrations. From a comparison with the experimental dynamic moments of inertia, a new interpretation of the observed excited bands invoking the K=2 octupole vibrations is proposed, which suggests those octupole vibrations may be prevalent in SD Hg nuclei.

Octupole Vibrations at High Angular Momenta

Properties of octupole vibrations in rapidly rotating nuclei are discussed. Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the interplay between rotation and vibrations. The ability of this model to describe the properties of collective vibrations built on the ground bands in rare-earth and actinide nuclei is demonstrated at high angular momentum. The octupole vibrational states in even-even superdeformed Hg nuclei are also predicted and compared with available experimental data. A new interpretation of the observed excited superdeformed bands invoking these octupole bands is proposed.

Effects of Octupole Vibrations on Quasiparticle Modes of Excitation in Superdeformed $^{193}$Hg

A particle-vibration coupling calculation based on the RPA and the cranked shell model has been carried out for superdeformed rotational bands in $^{193}$Hg. The result suggests that properties of single-particle motions in superdeformed nuclei may be significantly affected by coupling effects with low-frequency octupole vibrational modes, especially by the lowest $K=2$ octupole mode.
