An Approximation Algorithm for 2-Vertex-Connectivity via Cycle-Restricted 2-Edge-Covers

In the 2-Vertex-Connected Spanning Subgraph problem (2-VCSS), we are given an undirected graph $G$, and the objective is to find a 2-vertex-connected spanning subgraph $S$ of $G$ with the minimum number of edges. In the context of survivable network design, 2-VCSS is one of the most fundamental and well-studied problems. There has been active research on improving the approximation ratio of algorithms, and the current best ratio is $\frac{4}{3}$, achieved by Bosch-Calvo, Grandoni, and Jabal Ameli. In this paper, we improve the approximation ratio to $\frac{21}{16}+\varepsilon$ ($<1.313$). The key idea in our algorithm is to introduce a 2-edge-cover without certain cycle components, and use it as an initial solution.

A PTAS for Weighted Triangle-free 2-Matching

In the Weighted Triangle-Free 2-Matching problem (WTF2M), we are given an undirected edge-weighted graph. Our goal is to compute a maximum-weight subgraph that is a 2-matching (i.e., no node has degree more than $2$) and triangle-free (i.e., it does not contain any cycle with $3$ edges). One of the main motivations for this and related problems is their practical and theoretical connection with the Traveling Salesperson Problem and with some $2$-connectivity network design problems. WTF2M is not known to be NP-hard and at the same time no polynomial-time algorithm to solve it is known in the general case (polynomial-time algorithms are known only for some special cases). The best-known (folklore) approximation algorithm for this problem simply computes a maximum-weight 2-matching, and then drops the cheapest edge of each triangle: this gives a $2/3$ approximation. In this paper we present a PTAS for WTF2M, i.e., a polynomial-time $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm for any given constant $\varepsilon>0$. Our result is based on a simple local-search algorithm and a non-trivial analysis.

Validating a PTAS for Triangle-Free 2-Matching via a Simple Decomposition Theorem

A triangle-free (simple) 2-matching is an edge set that has at most $2$ edges incident to each vertex and contains no cycle of length $3$. For the problem of finding a maximum cardinality triangle-free 2-matching in a given graph, a complicated exact algorithm was proposed by Hartvigsen. Recently, a simple PTAS using local search was presented by Bosch-Calvo, Grandoni, and Ameli, but its validity proof is not easy. In this paper, we show a natural and simple decomposition theorem for triangle-free 2-matchings, which leads to a simpler validity proof of the PTAS for the problem.

An Approximation Algorithm for Two-Edge-Connected Subgraph Problem via Triangle-free Two-Edge-Cover

The $2$-Edge-Connected Spanning Subgraph problem (2-ECSS) is one of the most fundamental and well-studied problems in the context of network design. In the problem, we are given an undirected graph $G$, and the objective is to find a $2$-edge-connected spanning subgraph $H$ of $G$ with the minimum number of edges. For this problem, a lot of approximation algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In particular, very recently, Garg, Grandoni, and Ameli gave an approximation algorithm for 2-ECSS with factor $1.326$, which was the best approximation ratio. In this paper, we give a $(1.3+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm for 2-ECSS, where $\varepsilon$ is an arbitrary positive fixed constant, which improves the previously known best approximation ratio. In our algorithm, we compute a minimum triangle-free $2$-edge-cover in $G$ with the aid of the algorithm for finding a maximum triangle-free $2$-matching given by Hartvigsen. Then, with the obtained triangle-free $2$-edge-cover, we apply the arguments by Garg, Grandoni, and Ameli.

Anomalous Diffusion in a Monolayer of Lightweight Spheres Fluidized in Airflow

This paper presents statistical analyses of random motions in a single layer of fluidized lightweight spherical particles. Foam polystyrene spheres were driven by an upward airflow through the sieve mesh, and their two-dimensional motion was acquired using image analysis. In the bulk region, the particle velocity distributions changed from Gaussian to heavy-tailed distribution as the bulk packing fraction $ϕ_b$ was increased. The mean square displacement of the particles exhibited transition to subdiffusion at much lower $ϕ_b$ than observed in previous studies using similar setup but with heavier particles. A slight superdiffusion and significant growth of the correlation length in the two-body velocity correlation was observed at further large $ϕ_b$. The effect of the wall on the dynamics of the particles was also investigated and the anisotropy of the granular temperature was found to be a useful index to discriminate between the wall region and the bulk. The turbulence statistics in the wake of a particle indicated a strong wall-normal asymmetry of aerodynamic forcing as the ``thermal'' agitation in the wall region.

Series-connected array of superconductor-insulator-superconductor junctions in the 100-GHz band heterodyne mixer for FOREST on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope

In this study, we designed and experimentally evaluated a series-connected array of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions in the 100-GHz band mixer for the multi-beam receiver FOREST on the Nobeyama 45-m millimeter-wave telescope. The construction of the junction chip comprised a waveguide probe antenna, impedance matching circuit, SIS array junction, and choke filter, which were made from a superconducting niobium planar circuit on a quartz substrate. The multi-stage impedance matching circuit between the feed point and the SIS junction was designed as a capacitively loaded transmission line, and it comprised two sections with high (~90 Ohm) and low (~10 Ohm) characteristic impedance transmission lines. The structure of this tuning line was simple and easy to fabricate, and the feed impedance matched with the SIS junction in a wide frequency range. The signal coupling efficiency was more than 92% and the expected receiver noise temperature was approximately two times the quantum limit for 75-125 GHz based on quantum theory. The array junction devices with 3-6 connected junctions were fabricated and we measured their performance in terms of the receiver noise temperature and gain compression in the laboratory. We successfully developed an array junction device with a receiver noise temperature of ~15-30 K and confirmed that the improvement in the saturation power corresponded to the number of junctions. The newly developed array junction mixer was installed in the FOREST receiver and it successfully detected the 12CO (J = 1-0) molecular line toward IRC+10216 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope.

Planar Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor Mixer Array Receivers for Wide Field of View Astronomical Observation

We present a conceptual framework of planar SIS mixer array receivers and the studies on the required techniques. This concept features membrane-based on-chip waveguide probes and a quasi-two-dimensional local-oscillator distribution waveguide network. This concept allows sophisticated functions, such as dual-polarization, balanced mixing and sideband separation, easily implemented with the SIS mixer array in the same planar circuit. We have developed a single-pixel prototype receiver by implementing the concept in the design. Initial measurement results show good evidences that support the feasibility of the concept.

A simple kinetic model for the phase transition of the van der Waals fluid

A simple kinetic model, which is presumably minimum, for the phase transition of the van der Waals fluid is presented. In the model, intermolecular collisions for a dense gas has not been treated faithfully. Instead, the expected interactions as the non-ideal gas effect are confined in a self-consistent force term. Collision term plays just a role of thermal bath. Accordingly, it conserves neither momentum nor energy, even globally. It is demonstrated that (i) by a natural separation of the mean-field self-consistent potential, the potential for the non-ideal gas effect is determined from the equation of state for the van der Waals fluid, with the aid of the balance equation of momentum, (ii) a functional which monotonically decreases in time is identified by the H theorem and is found to have a close relation to the Helmholtz free energy in thermodynamics, and (iii) the Cahn--Hilliard type equation is obtained in the continuum limit of the present kinetic model. Numerical simulations based on the Cahn--Hilliard type equation are also performed.

Analysis of characteristics of Al MKID resonators

We have prepared two kinds of Al resonators using thin films made by evaporation or sputtering and studied temperature behavior of their quality factors and resonance frequencies with the help of the extended Mattis-Bardeen (M-B) equations and its approximated analytical expressions. We have found that temperature behavior of both the internal quality factor and resonance frequency shift measured in evaporated Al thin-film resonators are well agreed with those calculated by the analytical expressions of the complex conductivity given by the M-B theory. In the Al thin film resonators made by sputtering, the internal quality factor and resonance frequency shift show a peak and a bump near 0.17 K in the respective temperature dependence. It is found that inverse of the internal quality factor is well approximated by a-b*log(T) below 0.15 K, where T is the temperature. This type of temperature dependence strongly indicates the existence of the magnetic impurity scattering of residual quasiparticles due to the Kondo effect. It is shown that temperature dependence of the internal quality factor and resonance frequency shift observed in the sputtered Al resonators can be well fitted by the theory taking the Kondo effect and kinetic inductance of the residual quasiparticles into account.

A New 100-GHz Band Two-Beam Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for Z-Machine on the NRO 45-m Radio Telescope

We have developed a two-beam waveguide-type dual-polarization sideband-separating SIS receiver system in the 100-GHz band for {\it z}-machine on the 45-m radio telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. The receiver is intended for astronomical use in searching for highly redshifted spectral lines from galaxies of unknown redshift. This receiver has two beams, which have 45$^{\prime\prime}$ of beam separation and allow for observation with the switch in the on-on position. The receiver of each beam is composed of an ortho-mode transducer and two sideband-separating SIS mixers, which are both based on a waveguide technique, and the receiver has four intermediate frequency bands of 4.0--8.0 GHz. Over the radio frequency range of 80--116 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperature is lower than about 50 K, and the image rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB in most of the same frequency range. The new receiver system has been installed in the telescope, and we successfully observed a $^{12}$CO ({\it J}=3--2) emission line toward a cloverleaf quasar at {\it z} = 2.56, which validates the performance of the receiver system. The SSB noise temperature of the system, including the atmosphere, is typically 150--300 K at a radio frequency of 97 GHz. We have begun blind search of high-{\it J} CO toward high-{\it z} submillimeter galaxies.

A New 100-GHz Band Front-End System with a Waveguide-Type Dual-Polarization Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the NRO 45-m Radio Telescope

We developed a waveguide-type dual-polarization sideband-separating SIS receiver system of the 100-GHz band for the 45-m radio telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Japan. This receiver is composed of an ortho-mode transducer and two sideband-separating SIS mixers, which are both based on the waveguide technique. The receiver has four intermediate frequency bands of 4.0--8.0 GHz. Over the radio frequency range of 80--120 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperatures are 50--100 K and the image rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB. We developed new matching optics for the telescope beam as well as new IF chains for the four IF signals. The new receiver system was installed in the telescope, and we successfully observed the 12CO, 13CO and C18O emission lines simultaneously toward the Sagittarius B2 region to confirm the performance of the receiver system. The SSB noise temperature of the system, including the atmosphere, became approximately half of that of the previous receiver system. The Image Rejection Ratios (IRRs) of the two 2SB mixers were calculated from the 12CO and HCO+ spectra from the W51 giant molecular cloud, resulting in > 20 dB for one polarization and > 12 dB for the other polarization.

New 60-cm Radio Survey Telescope with the Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the 200 GHz Band

We have upgraded the 60-cm radio survey telescope located in Nobeyama, Japan. We developed a new waveguide-type sideband-separating SIS mixer for the telescope, which enables the simultaneous detection of distinct molecular emission lines both in the upper and lower sidebands. Over the RF frequency range of 205-240 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperatures of the new mixer are 40-100 K for the 4.0-8.0 GHz IF frequency band. The image rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB over the same range. For the dual IF signals obtained by the receiver, we have developed two sets of acousto-optical spectrometers and a telescope control system. Using the new telescope system, we successfully detected the 12CO (J=2-1) and 13CO (J=2-1) emission lines simultaneously toward Orion KL in 2005 March. Using the waveguide-type sideband-separating SIS mixer for the 200 GHz band, we have initiated the first simultaneous 12CO (J=2-1) and 13CO (J=2-1) survey of the galactic plane as well as large-scale mapping observations of nearby molecular clouds.

Large-scale mapping observations of the CI(3P1-3P0) and CO(J=3-2) lines toward the Orion A molecular cloud

Large scale mapping observations of the 3P1-3P0 fine structure transition of atomic carbon (CI, 492 GHz) and the J=3-2 transition of CO (346 GHz) toward the Orion A molecular cloud have been carried out with the Mt. Fuji submillimeter-wave telescope. The observations cover 9 square degrees, and include the Orion nebula M42 and the L1641 dark cloud complex. The CI emission extends over almost the entire region of the Orion A cloud and is surprisingly similar to that of 13CO(J=1-0).The CO(J=3-2) emission shows a more featureless and extended distribution than CI.The CI/CO(J=3-2) integrated intensity ratio shows a spatial gradient running from the north (0.10) to the south (1.2) of the Orion A cloud, which we interpret as a consequence of the temperature gradient. On the other hand, the CI/13CO(J=1-0) intensity ratio shows no systematic gradient. We have found a good correlation between the CI and 13CO(J=1-0) intensities over the Orion A cloud. This result is discussed on the basis of photodissociation region models.
