Quasilinear Reaction Diffusion Systems with Mass Dissipation

We study quasilinear reaction diffusion systems relative to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. Nonlinearity standing for the external force is provided with mass dissipation. Estimate in several norms of the solution is provided under the restriction of diffusion coefficients, growth rate of reaction, and space dimension.

Duality for local fields and sheaves on the category of fields

Duality for complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue field with coefficients in (possibly p-torsion) finite flat group schemes was obtained by Begueri, Bester and Kato. In this paper, we give another formulation and proof of this result. We use the category of fields and a Grothendieck topology on it. This simplifies the formulation and proof and reduces the duality to classical results on Galois cohomology. A key point is that the resulting site correctly captures extension groups between algebraic groups.

Gradient inequality and convergence of the normalized Ricci flow

We study the problem of convergence of the normalized Ricci flow evolving on a compact manifold $Ω$ without boundary. In \cite{KS10, KS15} we derived, via PDE techniques, global-in-time existence of the classical solution and pre-compactness of the orbit. In this work we show its convergence to steady-states, using a gradient inequality of Łojasiewicz type. We have thus an alternative proof of \cite{ha}, but for general manifold $Ω$ and not only for unit sphere. As a byproduct of that approach we also derive the rate of convergence according to this steady-sate being either degenerate or non-degenerate as a critical point of a related energy functional.

On the $μ$-invariants of abelian varieties over function fields of positive characteristic

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a global function field $K$ of characteristic $p$. We study the $μ$-invariant appearing in the Iwasawa theory of $A$ over the unramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Ulmer suggests that this invariant is equal to what he calls the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ and that it is indeed the dimension of some canonically defined group scheme. Our first result is to verify his suggestions. He also gives a formula for the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group (which is now the $μ$-invariant) in terms of other quantities including the Faltings height of $A$ and Frobenius slopes of the numerator of the Hasse-Weil $L$-function of $A / K$ assuming the conjectural Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer formula. Our next result is to prove this $μ$-invariant formula unconditionally for Jacobians and for semistable abelian varieties. Finally, we show that the "$μ=0$" locus of the moduli of isomorphism classes of minimal elliptic surfaces endowed with a section and with fixed large enough Euler characteristic is a dense open subset.

Mass conservative reaction diffusion systems describing cell polarity

A reaction-diffusion system with mass conservation modelling cell polarity is considered. A range of the parameters is found where the solution converges exponentially to the constant equilibrium and the $ω$-limit set of the solution is spatially homogeneous, containing the constant stationary solution as well as possible spatially homogeneous orbits.

An improvement of the duality formalism of the rational etale site

We improve the arithmetic duality formalism of the rational etale site. This improvement allows us to avoid some exotic approximation arguments on local fields with ind-rational base, thus simplifying the proofs of the previously established duality theorems in the rational etale site and making the formalism more user-friendly. In a subsequent paper, this new formulation will be used in a crucial way to study duality for two-dimensional local rings.

Duality theories for p-primary etale cohomology III

This paper is Part III of the series of work by the first named author on duality theories for p-primary etale cohomology, whose Parts I and II were published in 1986 and 1987, respectively. In this Part III, we study a duality for p-primary etale nearby cycles on smooth schemes over henselian discrete valuation rings of mixed characteristic (0, p) whose residue field is not necessarily perfect.

Neron models of 1-motives and duality

In this paper, we propose a definition of Neron models of arbitrary Deligne 1-motives over Dedekind schemes, extending Neron models of semi-abelian varieties. The key property of our Neron models is that they satisfy a generalization of Grothendieck's duality conjecture in SGA 7 when the residue fields of the base scheme at closed points are perfect. The assumption on the residue fields is unnecessary for the class of 1-motives with semistable reduction everywhere. In general, this duality holds after inverting the residual characteristics. The definition of Neron models involves careful treatment of ramification of lattice parts and its interaction with semi-abelian parts. This work is a complement to Grothendieck's philosophy on Neron models of motives of arbitrary weights.

Duality for cohomology of curves with coefficients in abelian varieties

In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organized under the formalism of the rational etale site developed earlier.

Complexity of human response delay in intermittent control: The case of virtual stick balancing

Response delay is an inherent and essential part of human actions. In the context of human balance control, the response delay is traditionally modeled using the formalism of delay-differential equations, which adopts the approximation of fixed delay. However, experimental studies revealing substantial variability, adaptive anticipation, and non-stationary dynamics of response delay provide evidence against this approximation. In this paper, we call for development of principally new mathematical formalism describing human response delay. To support this, we present the experimental data from a simple virtual stick balancing task. Our results demonstrate that human response delay is a widely distributed random variable with complex properties, which can exhibit oscillatory and adaptive dynamics characterized by long-range correlations. Given this, we argue that the fixed-delay approximation ignores essential properties of human response, and conclude with possible directions for future developments of new mathematical notions describing human control.

Large-time asymptotics of a public goods game model with diffusion

We consider a spatially inhomogeneous public goods game model with diffusion. By utilising a generalised Hamiltonian structure of the model we study the existence of global classical solutions as well as the large time behaviour: First, the asymptotic convergence of the PDE to the corresponding ODE system is proven. This result entails also the periodic behaviour of PDE solutions in the large time limit. Secondly, a shadow system approximation is considered and the convergence of the PDE to the shadow system in the associated fast-diffusion limit is shown. Finally, the asymptotic convergence of the shadow to the ODE system is proven.

Grothendieck's pairing on Neron component groups: Galois descent from the semistable case

In our previous study of duality for complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue field, we treated coefficients in finite flat group schemes. In this paper, we treat abelian varieties. This in particular implies Grothendieck's conjecture on the perfectness of his pairing between the Neron component groups of an abelian variety and its dual. The point is that our formulation is well-suited with Galois descent. From the known case of semistable abelian varieties, we deduce the perfectness in full generality. We also treat coefficients in tori and, more generally, 1-motives.

Blow up analysis for Boltzmann-Poisson equation in Onsager's theory for point vortices with multi-intensities

In this paper we consider the minimizing sequence for some energy functional of an elliptic equation associated with the mean field limit of the point vortex distribution one-sided Borel probability measure. If such a sequence blows up, we derive some estimate which is related to the behavior of solution near the blow-up point. Moreover, we study the two intensities case to consider the sufficient condition for this estimate. Our main results are new for the standard mean field equation as well.

Origin of high piezoelectricity at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in (Pb0.94Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3

In this work, we address the issue of peaking of piezoelectric response at a particular composition in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of (Pb0.940Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PSZT) piezoelectric ceramics. We present results of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, piezoelectric and sound velocity studies to critically examine the applicability of various models for the peaking of physical properties. It is shown that the models based on the concepts of phase coexistence, polarization rotation due to monoclinic structure, tricritical point and temperature dependent softening of elastic modulus may enhance the piezoelectric response in the MPB region in general but cannot explain its peaking at a specific composition. Our results reveal that the high value of piezoelectric response for the MPB compositions in PSZT at x=0.530 is due to the softening of the elastic modulus as a function of composition. The softening of elastic modulus facilitates the generation of large piezoelectric strain and polarization on approaching the MPB composition of x=0.530. This new finding based on the softening of elastic modulus may pave the way forward for discovering/designing new lead-free environmentally friendly piezoelectric materials and revolutionize the field of piezoelectric ceramics.

On the dynamics of a non-local parabolic equation arising from the Gierer-Meinhardt system

The purpose of the current paper is to contribute to the comprehension of the dynamics of the shadow system of an activator-inhibitor system known as a Gierer-Meinhardt model. Shadow systems are intended to work as an intermediate step between single equations and reaction-diffusion systems. In the case where the inhibitor's response to the activator's growth is rather weak, then the shadow system of the Gierer-Meinhardt model is reduced to a single though non-local equation whose dynamics will be investigated. We mainly focus on the derivation of blow-up results for this non-local equation which can be seen as instability patterns of the shadow system. In particular, a {\it diffusion driven instability (DDI)}, or {\it Turing instability}, in the neighbourhood of a constant stationary solution, which it is destabilised via diffusion-driven blow-up, is obtained. The latter actually indicates the formation of some unstable patterns, whilst some stability results of global-in-time solutions towards non-constant steady states guarantee the occurrence of some stable patterns.

Global classical solutions for mass-conserving, (super)-quadratic reaction-diffusion systems in three and higher space dimensions

This paper considers quadratic and super-quadratic reaction-diffusion systems for reversible chemistry, for which all species satisfy uniform-in-time $L^1$ a-priori estimates, for instance, as a consequence of suitable mass conservation laws. A new result on the global existence of classical solutions is proved in three and higher space dimensions by combining regularity and interpolation arguments in Bochner spaces, a bootstrap scheme and a weak comparison argument. Moreover, provided that the considered system allows for entropy entropy-dissipation estimates proving exponential convergence to equilibrium, we are also able to prove that solutions are bounded uniformly-in-time.

First, we show global-in-time existence of solution with compact orbit and then we examine stability and instability of stationary solutions.}{Reaction diffusion system; mass conservation; cell polarity; global-in-time behavior; Lyapunov function.
