Direct observation of Hardy's paradox by joint weak measurement with an entangled photon pair

We implemented a joint weak measurement of the trajectories of two photons in a photonic version of Hardy's experiment. The joint weak measurement has been performed via an entangled meter state in polarization degrees of freedom of the two photons. Unlike Hardy's original argument in which the contradiction is inferred by retrodiction, our experiment reveals its paradoxical nature as preposterous values actually read out from the meter. Such a direct observation of a paradox will give us a new insight into the spooky action of quantum mechanics.

Local transformation of two EPR photon pairs into a three-photon W state

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a transformation of two EPR photon pairs distributed among three parties into a three-photon W state using local operations and classical communication. We then characterize the final state using quantum state tomography on the three-photon state and on its marginal bipartite states. The fidelity of the final state to the ideal W state is $0.778\pm 0.043$ and the expectation value for its witness operator is $-0.111\pm 0.043$ implying the success of the proposed local transformation.

Optimal entanglement generation for efficient hybrid quantum repeaters

We propose a realistic protocol to generate entanglement between quantum memories at neighboring nodes in hybrid quantum repeaters. Generated entanglement includes only one type of error, which enables efficient entanglement distillation. In contrast to the known protocols with such a property, our protocol with ideal detectors achieves the theoretical limit of the success probability and the fidelity to a Bell state, promising higher efficiencies in the repeaters. We also show that the advantage of our protocol remains even with realistic threshold detectors.

Local expansion of photonic W state using a polarization dependent beamsplitter

We propose a simple probabilistic optical gate to expand polarization entangled W states. The gate uses one polarization-dependent beamsplitter and a horizontally polarized single photon as an ancilla. The gate post-selectively expands $N$-photon W states to $(N+1)$-photon W states. A feasibility analysis considering the realistic experimental conditions show that the scheme is within the reach of the current quantum optical technologies.

Robust photonic entanglement distribution via state-independent encoding onto decoherence-free subspace

Efficient and faithful implementation of quantum information tasks, e.g., quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum metrology, requires robust and state-independent decoherence-suppressing measures to protect quantum information carriers. Here we present an experimental demonstration of a robust distribution scheme in which one photon of an entangled photon pair is successfully encoded into and decoded from a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) by a state-independent scheme. We achieved a high-fidelity distribution of the entangled state over fibre communication channel, and also demonstrated that the scheme is robust against fragility of the reference frame. The scheme, thanks to its state-independence, is also applicable to multipartite case where the photon to be distributed is entangled with many other photons. Such a universal scheme opens the possibility of robust distribution of quantum information among quantum communication and computing networks.

Generation of high-fidelity four-photon cluster state and quantum-domain demonstration of one-way quantum computing

We experimentally demonstrate a simple scheme for generating a four-photon entangled cluster state with fidelity over 0.860 $\pm$ 0.015. We show that the fidelity is high enough to guarantee that the produced state is distinguished from Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and Dicke types of genuine four-qubit entanglement. We also demonstrate basic operations of one-way quantum computing using the produced state and show that the output state fidelities surpass classical bounds, which indicates that the entanglement in the produced state essentially contributes to the quantum operation.

Security of entanglement-based quantum key distribution with practical detectors

We prove the unconditional security of an entanglement-based quantum-key-distribution protocol using detectors that respond to multiple modes of light and cannot distinguish between one from two or more photons. Even with such practical detectors, any defect in the source is automatically detected as an increase in the error rate or in the rate of double clicks.

An elementary optical gate for expanding entanglement web

We introduce an elementary optical gate for expanding polarization entangled W states, in which every pair of photons are entangled alike. The gate is composed of a pair of 50:50 beamsplitters and ancillary photons in the two-photon Fock state. By seeding one of the photons in an $n$-photon W state into this gate, we obtain an $(n+2)$-photon W state after post-selection. This gate gives a better efficiency and a simpler implementation than previous proposals for $\rm W$-state preparation.

Simple and efficient quantum key distribution with parametric down-conversion

We propose an efficient quantum key distribution protocol based on the photon-pair generation from parametric down-conversion (PDC). It uses the same experimental setup as the conventional protocol, but a refined data analysis enables detection of photon-number splitting attacks by utilizing information from a built-in decoy state. Assuming the use of practical detectors, we analyze the unconditional security of the new scheme and show that it improves the secure key generation rate by several orders of magnitude at long distances, using a high intensity PDC source.

Quantum nonlocality without entanglement in a pair of qubits

We consider unambiguous discrimination of two separable bipartite states, one being pure and the other being a rank-2 mixed state. There is a gap between the optimal success probability under global measurements and the one achieved by generalized measurements with separable measurement operators. We show that even the latter success probability cannot be achieved via local operations and classical communication, leaving a nonzero gap in between.

Experimental ancilla-assisted qubit transmission against correlated noise using quantum parity checking

We report the experimental demonstration of a transmission scheme of photonic qubits over unstabilized optical fibers, which has the plug-and-play feature as well as the ability to transmit any state of a qubit, regardless of whether it is known, unknown, or entangled to other systems. A high fidelity to the noiseless quantum channel was achieved by adding an ancilla photon after the signal photon within the correlation time of the fiber noise and by performing quantum parity checking. Simplicity, maintenance-free feature and robustness against path-length mismatches among the nodes make our scheme suitable for multi-user quantum communication networks.

Selective entanglement breaking

We discuss the cases where local decoherence selectively degrades one type of entanglement more than other types. A typical case is called state ordering change, in which two input states with different amounts of entanglement undergoes a local decoherence and the state with the larger entanglement results in an output state with less entanglement than the other output state. We are also interested in a special case where the state with the larger entanglement evolves to a separable state while the other output state is still entangled, which we call selective entanglement breaking. For three-level or larger systems, it is easy to find examples of the state ordering change and the selective entanglement breaking, but for two-level systems it is not trivial whether such situations exist. We present a new strategy to construct examples of two-qubit states exhibiting the selective entanglement breaking regardless of entanglement measure. We also give a more striking example of the selective entanglement breaking in which the less entangled input state has only an infinitesimal amount of entanglement.

Polarization Entangled W State using Parametric Down-Conversion

An experimental scheme for preparing a polarization entangled W states from four photons emitted by parametric down-conversion is proposed. We consider two different configurations and a method of improving the yield by using single photon sources. In the proposed scheme, one uses only linear optical elements and photon detectors, so that this scheme is feasible by current technologies.

Molecular dynamics simulation of polymer insertion into lipid bilayers

Relatively short peptides, such as toxins and antimicrobial-peptides, are known to insert themselves into cell membranes. On the basis of simple bead-spring models for the membrane lipids, the peptide, and water, detailed processes of the peptide insertion is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation; our special concern is in the highly cooperative motions of membrane lipids and the peptide. Our model lipid has a head group of three hydrophilic beads and a tail of seven hydrophobic beads, while the model peptide is a block-copolymer made of hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks, with total length of 200 beads. In addition, each water molecule is represented by a single bead which has considerably larger interaction energy. We first confirm that our present lipid model can support spontaneous formation of bilayers in water. Then we place the model peptide near the bilayers and monitor the microscopic process of the adsorption, insertion, and translocation of the peptide. When the peptide molecule is set free to interact with the membrane, the hydrophobic blocks of the peptide strongly favor intimate contact with the lipid tails. This strong attractive interaction gives rise to a severe membrane perturbation, which leads to the formation of a pore, though short-lived, in the membrane. It is found that the side-surface of the pore is almost covered with the hydrophilic heads of the lipids, which seems to help the hydrophilic blocks of the peptide translocate across the membrane. We also monitor the rate of flip-flop inversion of the directions of lipids, and we find it markedly increases during the peptide contact and insertion. The peptide insertion/translocation, the formation of membrane pore, and the flip-flop motions of the lipids are thus found to be closely interconnected.

A molecular dynamics simulation of polymer crystallization from oriented amorphous state

Molecular process of crystallization from an oriented amorphous state was reproduced by molecular dynamics simulation for a realistic polyethylene model. Initial oriented amorphous state was obtained by uniaxial drawing an isotropic glassy state at 100 K. By the temperature jump from 100 K to 330 K, there occurred the crystallization into the fiber structure, during the process of which we observed the developments of various order parameters. The real space image and its Fourier transform revealed that a hexagonally ordered domain was initially formed, and then highly ordered crystalline state with stacked lamellae developed after further adjustment of the relative heights of the chains along their axes.

Probabilistic manipulation of entangled photons

We propose probabilistic controlled-NOT and controlled-phase gates for qubits stored in the polarization of photons. The gates are composed of linear optics and photon detectors, and consume polarization entangled photon pairs. The fraction of the successful operation is only limited by the efficiency of the Bell-state measurement. The gates work correctly under the use of imperfect detectors and lossy transmission of photons. Combined with single-qubit gates, they can be used for producing arbitrary polarization states and for designing various quantum measurements.

A Concentration/Purification Scheme for Two Partially Entangled Photon Pairs

An experimental scheme for concentrating entanglement in partially entangled photon pairs is proposed. In this scheme, two separated parties obtain one maximally entangled photon pair from previously shared two partially entangled photon pairs by local operations and classical communication. A practical realization of the proposed scheme is discussed, which uses imperfect photon detectors and spontaneous parametric down-conversion as a photon source. This scheme also works for purifying a class of mixed states.

Phase diagram of a generalized Hubbard model applied to orbital order in manganites

The magnetic phase diagram of a two-dimensional generalized Hubbard model proposed for manganites is studied within Hartree-Fock approximation. In this model the hopping matrix includes anisotropic diagonal hopping matrix elements as well as off-diagonal elements. The antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (F), canted (C) and paramagnetic (P) states are included in the analysis as possible phases. It is found that away from half-filling only the canted and F states may exist and AF and P states which are possible for the usual Hubbard model do not appear. This is because the F order has already developed for on-site repulsion U=0 due to the hopping matrix of the generalized model. When applied for manganites the orbital degree is described by a pseudospin. Thus our ``magnetic'' phase diagram obtained physically describes how orbital order changes with $U$ and with doping for manganites. Part of our results are consistent with other numerical calculations and some experiments.
