Off-diagonal Wave Function Monte Carlo Studies of Hubbard Model I

We propose a Monte Carlo method, which is a hybrid method of the quantum Monte Carlo method and variational Monte Carlo theory, to study the Hubbard model. The theory is based on the off-diagonal and the Gutzwiller type correlation factors which are taken into account by a Monte Carlo algorithm. In the 4x4 system our method is able to reproduce the exact results obtained by the diagonalization. An application is given to investigate the half-filled band case of two-dimensional square lattice. The energy is favorably compared with quantum Monte Carlo data.

Stripe formation in high-Tc superconductors

The non-uniform ground state of the two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model for the oxide high-Tc superconductors is investigated using a variational Monte Carlo method. We examine the effect produced by holes doped into the antiferromagnetic (AF) background in the underdoped region. It is shown that the AF state with spin modulations and stripes is stabilized du to holes travelling in the CuO plane. The structures of the modulated AF spins are dependent upon the parameters used in the model. The effect of the boundary conditions is reduced for larger systems. We show that there is a region where incommensurability is proportional to the hole density. Our results give a consistent description of stripes observed by the neutron- scattering experiments based on the three-band model for CuO plane.

Anisotropic Optical Conductivity of Nd2-xCexCuO4 Thin Films

Opticcal conductivity spectra $σ_1(ω)$ of Nd2-xCexCuO4 thin films, measured by the reflectance-transmittance method (R-T method) which has been proposed to investigate far-infrared spectroscopy, are investigated based on the anisotropic pairing model. Precise measurements of the frequency-dependent conductivity enable us to examine quantitatively the nature of the superconducting gap through infrared properties in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors. We show that the behavior of optical conductivity $σ_1$ is consistent with the anisotropic superconducting gap and is well explained by the formula for d-wave pairing in the low-energy regime of the far-infrared region. Our results suggest that the electron-doped cuprate superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 have nodes in the superconducting gap.

Variational Monte Carlo Study on the Superconductivity in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

The possibility of superconductivity (SC) in the 2D Hubbard model (2DH) was investigated by means of the variational Monte Carlo method. The energy gain of the d-wave SC state, obtained as the difference of the minimum energy with a finite gap and that with zero gap, was examined with respect to dependences on U, electron density rho and next nearest neighbor transfer t' mainly on the 10 x 10 lattice. It was found to be maximized around U = 8 (in energy unit of t). It sharply increased for negative values of t' and had a broad peak for t' ~ -0.10. For these values of t' the energy gain was a smooth increasing function of rho almost independent of the shell structure in the region starting from ~ 0.76 up to 0.92. This clearly indicates that the result is already close to the value in the bulk limit. For t' = 0, the energy gain depended on the electronic shell state. Competition between the SC and the SDW states was also investigated. When t' = 0, the ground state is SDW in the range of rho \geq ~ 0.84$. The SC region slightly extends up to ~ 0.87 for t' ~ -0.10. Consequently the present results strongly indicate that the 2DH with t' ~ -0.1 drives SC by itself in the rho region from ~ 0.76 to ~ 0.87. The energy gain in the SC state with suitable parameters is found to be in reasonable agreement with the condensation energy in the SC state of YBa2Cu3O7. The corresponding t-J model proves to give an order-of-magnitude larger energy gain, which questions its validity.

On Metal-Insulator Transitions due to Self-Doping

We investigate the influence of an unoccupied band on the transport properties of a strongly correlated electron system. For that purpose, additional orbitals are coupled to a Hubbard model via hybridization. The filling is one electron per site. Depending on the position of the additional band, both, a metal--to--insulator and an insulator--to--metal transition occur with increasing hybridization. The latter transition from a Mott insulator into a metal via ``self--doping'' was recently proposed to explain the low carrier concentration in $\rm Yb_4As_3$. We suggest a restrictive parameter regime for this transition making use of exact results in various limits. The predicted absence of the self--doping transition for nested Fermi surfaces is confirmed by means of an unrestricted Hartree--Fock approximation and an exact diagonalization study in one dimension. In the general case metal--insulator phase diagrams are obtained within the slave--boson mean--field and the alloy--analog approximation.
