Exact Anomalous Current Fluctuations in Quantum Many-Body Dynamics

Fluctuations of integrated currents have attracted considerable interest over the past decades in the context of statistical mechanics. Recently, anomalous current fluctuations, characterized by the M-Wright function, were obtained exactly in a classical automaton [$\v{Z}$. Krajnik et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 160601 (2022)], and previous studies have shown that the anomalous behavior can arise in a variety of classical systems. Despite the rapidly growing interest in such anomalous behaviors, which capture a universal aspect of one-dimensional many-body transport, the exact derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body systems has remained elusive. In this Letter, we present the first exact microscopic derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body dynamics by analyzing the integrated spin current in a one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model with infinitely strong repulsive interactions. Our results lay the groundwork for exploring anomalous integrated currents in a broad class of quantum many-body systems.

Anomalous hydrodynamic fluctuations in the quantum XXZ spin chain

The quantum XXZ spin-1/2 chain features non-Gaussian spin current fluctuations in the regime of easy-axis anisotropy. Using ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory, we derive the exact probability distribution of typical spin-current fluctuations in thermal equilibrium. The obtained nested Gaussian distribution is fully characterized by its variance which we analytically relate to the spin diffusion constant and static spin susceptibility, and compare with numerical simulations. By unveiling how the same mechanism which leads to anomalous charge current fluctuations in single-file systems manifests itself in the XXZ chain, our approach establishes the universal hydrodynamic origin of the observed anomalous fluctuations.

Dynamics of Loschmidt echoes from operator growth in noisy quantum many-body systems

We study the dynamics of Loschmidt echoes in noisy quantum many-body systems without conservation laws. We first show that the operator Loschmidt echo in noisy unitary dynamics is equivalent to the operator norm of the corresponding dissipative dynamics upon noise averaging. We then analyze this quantity in two complementary ways, revealing universal dynamical behavior. First, we develop a heuristic picture for generic Floquet systems that connects Loschmidt echoes, out-of-time-order correlators, and operator growth, which is valid at any dissipation strength. We assert that the Loschmidt echo has two dynamical regimes depending on the time $t$ and the strength of the noise $p$: Gaussian decay for $pt\ll1$ and exponential decay (with a noise-independent decay rate) for $pt\gg1$. Lastly, we rigorously prove all our results for a solvable chaotic many-body quantum circuit, the dissipative random phase model -- thus providing exact insight into dissipative quantum chaos.

Hydrodynamic fluctuations of stochastic charged cellular automata

We study charge fluctuations of a family of stochastic charged cellular automata away from the deterministic single-file limit and obtain the exact typical charge probability distributions, known to be anomalous, using hydrodynamics. The cellular automata considered are examples of linearly degenerate systems where two distinct mechanisms of diffusion, namely normal and convective diffusion, coexist. Our formalism, based on macroscopic fluctuation theory, allows us to describe current fluctuations stemming from these two diffusive processes, and we expect it to be applicable to generic linearly degenerate systems. The derived probability distributions match the exact microscopic result and numerical simulations.

Theory of Irreversibility in Quantum Many-Body Systems

We address the longstanding challenge in quantum many-body theory of reconciling unitary dynamics with irreversible relaxation. In classical chaos, the unitary evolution operator develops Ruelle-Pollicott (RP) resonances inside the unit circle in the continuum limit, leading to mixing. In the semiclassical limit, chaotic single-particle quantum systems relax with the same RP resonances. In contrast, the theory of quantum many-body RP resonances and their link to irreversibility remain underdeveloped. Here, we relate the spectral form factor to the sum of autocorrelation functions and, in generic many-body lattice systems without conservation laws, argue that all quantum many-body RP resonances converge inside the unit disk, highlighting the role of nonunitary and the thermodynamic limit. While we conjecture this picture to be general, we analytically prove the emergence of irreversibility in the random phase model (RPM), a paradigmatic Floquet quantum circuit model, in the limit of large local Hilbert space dimension. To this end, we couple it to local environments and compute the exact time evolution of autocorrelation functions, the dissipative form factor, and out-of-time-order correlation functions (OTOCs). Although valid for any dissipation strength, we then focus on weak dissipation to clarify the origin of irreversibility in unitary systems. When the dissipationless limit is taken after the thermodynamic limit, the unitary quantum map develops an infinite tower of decaying RP resonances -- chaotic systems display so-called anomalous relaxation. We also show that the OTOC in the RPM can undergo a two-stage relaxation and that during the second stage, the approach to the stationary value is again controlled by the leading RP resonance. Anomalous current fluctuations from Euler hydrodynamics

We consider the hydrodynamic origin of anomalous current fluctuations in a family of stochastic charged cellular automata. Using ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory, we study both typical and large fluctuations of the charge current and reproduce microscopic results which are available for the deterministic single-file limit of the models. Our results indicate that in general initial fluctuations propagated by Euler equations fully characterize both scales of anomalous fluctuations. For stochastic dynamics, we find an additional contribution to typical fluctuations and conjecture the functional form of the typical probability distribution, which we confirm by numerical simulations.

Generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformations of classical free particles

Deformations of many-body Hamiltonians by certain products of conserved currents, referred to as $T\bar{T}$-deformations, are known to preserve integrability. Generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformations, based on the complete space of pseudolocal currents, were suggested [B. Doyon, J, Durnin, T. Yoshimura, Scipost Physics 13, 072 (2022)] to give rise to integrable systems with arbitrary two-body scattering shifts, going beyond those from known models or standard CDD factors. However, locality properties were not clear. We construct explicit generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformations of the system of classical free particles. We show rigorously that they are Liouville integrable Hamiltonian systems with finite-range interactions. We show elastic, factorised scattering, with a two-particle scattering shift that can be any continuously differentiable non-negative even function of momentum differences, fixed by the $T\bar{T}$-deformation function. We show that the scattering map (or wave operator) has a finite-range property allowing us to trace carriers of asymptotic momenta even at finite times - an important characteristics of many-body integrability. We evaluate the free energy and prove the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz with Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, including with space-varying potentials and in finite and infinite volumes. We give equations for the particles' trajectories where time appears explicitly, generalising the contraction map of hard rod systems: the effect of generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformations is to modify the local metric perceived by each particle, adding extra space in a way that depends on their neighbours. The systems generalise the gas of interacting Bethe ansatz wave packets recently introduced in the Lieb-Liniger model. They form a new class of models that, we believe, most clearly make manifest the structures of many-body integrability.

Operator dynamics in Floquet many-body systems

We study operator dynamics in many-body quantum systems, focusing on generic features of systems that are ergodic, spatially extended, and lack conserved densities. Quantum circuits of various types provide simple models for such systems. We focus on Floquet quantum circuits, comparing their behaviour with what has been found previously for circuits that are random in time. Floquet circuits, which have discrete time-translation symmetry, represent an intermediate case between circuits that are random in time and lack any symmetry, and systems with a time-independent Hamiltonian and continuous time-translation invariance. By making this comparison, one of our aims is to identify signatures of time-translation symmetry in Floquet operator dynamics. To characterise behaviour we examine a variety of quantities in solvable models and numerically: operator autocorrelation functions; the partial spectral form factor; the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC); and the paths in operator space that make the dominant contributions to the ensemble-averaged autocorrelation functions. Our most striking result is that ensemble-averaged autocorrelation functions show behaviour that is distinctively different in Floquet systems compared to systems in which successive time-steps are independent. Specifically, while average autocorrelation functions decay on a microscopic timescale for circuits that are random in time, in Floquet systems they have a late-time tail with a duration that grows parametrically with the size of the operator support. The existence of these tails provides a way to understand deviations of the spectral form factor from random matrix behaviour at times shorter than the Thouless time. In contrast to this feature in autocorrelation functions, we find no new aspects to the behaviour of OTOCs for Floquet models compared to random-in-time circuits.

Robustness of quantum chaos and anomalous relaxation in open quantum circuits

Dissipation is a ubiquitous phenomenon that affects the fate of chaotic quantum many-body dynamics. Here, we show that chaos can be robust against dissipation but can also assist and anomalously enhance relaxation. We compute exactly the dissipative form factor of a generic Floquet quantum circuit with arbitrary on-site dissipation modeled by quantum channels and find that, for long enough times, the system always relaxes with two distinctive regimes characterized by the presence or absence of gap-closing. While the system can sustain a robust ramp for a long (but finite) time interval in the gap-closing regime, relaxation is ``assisted'' by quantum chaos in the regime where the gap remains nonzero. In the latter regime, we prove that, if the thermodynamic limit is taken first, the gap does not close even in the dissipationless limit. We complement our analytical findings with numerical results for quantum qubit circuits.

New classical integrable systems from generalized $T\bar{T}$-deformations

We introduce and study a novel class of classical integrable many-body systems obtained by generalized $T\bar{T}$-deformations of free particles. Deformation terms are bilinears in densities and currents for the continuum of charges counting asymptotic particles of different momenta. In these models, which we dub ``semiclassical Bethe systems'' for their link with the dynamics of Bethe ansatz wave packets, many-body scattering processes are factorised, and two-body scattering shifts can be set to an almost arbitrary function of momenta. The dynamics is local but inherently different from that of known classical integrable systems. At short scales, the geometry of the deformation is dynamically resolved: either particles are slowed down (more space available), or accelerated via a novel classical particle-pair creation/annihilation process (less space available). The thermodynamics both at finite and infinite volumes is described by the equations of (or akin to) the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and at large scales generalized hydrodynamics emerge.

Emergence of hydrodynamic spatial long-range correlations in nonequilibrium many-body systems

At large scales of space and time, the nonequilibrium dynamics of local observables in extensive many-body systems is well described by hydrodynamics. At the Euler scale, one assumes that each mesoscopic region independently reaches a state of maximal entropy under the constraints given by the available conservation laws. Away from phase transitions, maximal entropy states show exponential correlation decay, and independence of fluid cells might be assumed to subsist during the course of time evolution. We show that this picture is incorrect: under ballistic scaling, regions separated by macroscopic distances develop long-range correlations as time passes. These correlations take a universal form that only depends on the Euler hydrodynamics of the model. They are rooted in the large-scale motion of interacting fluid modes, and are the dominant long-range correlations developing in time from long-wavelength, entropy-maximised states. They require the presence of interaction and at least two different fluid modes, and are of a fundamentally different nature from well-known long-range correlations occurring from diffusive spreading or from quasi-particle excitations produced in far-from-equilibrium quenches. We provide a universal theoretical framework to exactly evaluate them, an adaptation of the macroscopic fluctuation theory to the Euler scale. We verify our exact predictions in the hard-rod gas, by comparing with numerical simulations and finding excellent agreement.

Ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory

We introduce a new universal framework describing fluctuations and correlations in quantum and classical many-body systems, at the Euler hydrodynamic scale of space and time. The framework adapts the ideas of the conventional macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) to systems that support ballistic transport. The resulting "ballistic MFT" (BMFT) is solely based on the Euler hydrodynamics data of the many-body system. Within this framework, mesoscopic observables are classical random variables depending only on the fluctuating conserved densities, and Euler-scale fluctuations are obtained by deterministically transporting thermodynamic fluctuations via the Euler hydrodynamics. Using the BMFT, we show that long-range correlations in space generically develop over time from long-wavelength inhomogeneous initial states in interacting models. This result, which we verify by numerical calculations, challenges the long-held paradigm that at the Euler scale, fluid cells may be considered uncorrelated. We also show that the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem for non-equilibrium ballistic transport follows purely from time-reversal invariance of the Euler hydrodynamics. We check the validity of the BMFT by applying it to integrable systems, and in particular the hard-rod gas, with extensive simulations that confirm our analytical results.

The Space of Integrable Systems from Generalised $T\bar{T}$-Deformations

We introduce an extension of the generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformation described by Smirnov-Zamolodchikov, to include the complete set of extensive charges. We show that this gives deformations of S-matrices beyond CDD factors, generating arbitrary functional dependence on momenta. We further derive from basic principles of statistical mechanics the flow equations for the free energy and all free energy fluxes. From this follows, without invoking the microscopic Bethe ansatz or other methods from integrability, that the thermodynamics of the deformed models are described by the integral equations of the thermodynamic Bethe-Ansatz, and that the exact average currents take the form expected from generalised hydrodynamics, both in the classical and quantum realms.

Form factors and generalized hydrodynamics for integrable systems

Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). In the latter case the so obtained results are compared with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD are the GGE averaged microscopic currents, which can also be obtained through employing form factors. Discussed is a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.

Interplay between transport and quantum coherences in free fermionic systems

We study the quench dynamics in free fermionic systems in the prototypical bipartitioning protocol obtained by joining two semi-infinite subsystems prepared in different states, aiming at understanding the interplay between quantum coherences in space in the initial state and transport properties. Our findings reveal that, under reasonable assumptions, the more correlated the initial state, the slower the transport is. Such statement is first discussed at qualitative level, and then made quantitative by introducing proper measures of correlations and transport ``speed''. Moreover, it is supported for fermions on a lattice by an exact solution starting from specific initial conditions, and in the continuous case by the explicit solution for a wider class of physically relevant initial states. In particular, for this class of states, we identify a function, that we dub \emph{transition map}, which takes the value of the stationary current as input and gives the value of correlation as output, in a protocol-independent way. As an aside technical result, in the discrete case, we give an expression of the full counting statistics in terms of a continuous kernel for a general correlated domain wall initial state, thus extending the recent results in [Moriya, Nagao and Sasamoto, JSTAT 2019(6):063105] on the one-dimensional XX spin chain.

Thermal transport in $T\bar{T}$-deformed conformal field theories: from integrability to holography

In this paper we consider the energy and momentum transport in (1+1)-dimension conformal field theories (CFTs) that are deformed by an irrelevant operator $T\bar{T}$, using the integrability based generalized hydrodynamics, and holography. The two complementary methods allow us to study the energy and momentum transport after the in-homogeneous quench, derive the exact non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) and calculate the Drude weights and the diffusion constants. Our analysis reveals that all of these quantities satisfy universal formulae regardless of the underlying CFT, thereby generalizing the universal formulae for these quantities in pure CFTs. As a sanity check, we also confirm that the exact momentum diffusion constant agrees with the conformal perturbation. These fundamental physical insights have important consequences for our understanding of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs. First of all, they provide the first check of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed $\mathrm{AdS}_3$/$\mathrm{CFT}_2$ correspondence from the dynamical standpoint. And secondly, we are able to identify a remarkable connection between the $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs and reversible cellular automata.

$T\bar{T}$-deformed conformal field theories out of equilibrium

We consider the out-of-equilibrium transport in $T\bar{T}$-deformed (1+1)-dimension conformal field theories (CFTs). The theories admit two disparate approaches, integrability and holography, which we make full use of in order to compute the transport quantities, such as the the exact non-equilibrium steady state currents. We find perfect agreements between the results obtained from these two methods, which serve as the first checks of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed holographic correspondence from the dynamical standpoint. It turns out that integrability also allows us to compute the momentum diffusion, which is given by a universal formula. We also remark on an intriguing connection between the $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs and reversible cellular automata.

Collision rate ansatz for quantum integrable systems

For quantum integrable systems the currents averaged with respect to a generalized Gibbs ensemble are revisited. An exact formula is known, which we call "collision rate ansatz". While there is considerable work to confirm this ansatz in various models, our approach uses the symmetry of the current-charge susceptibility matrix, which holds in great generality. Besides some technical assumptions, the main input is the availability of a self-conserved current, i.e. some current which is itself conserved. The collision rate ansatz is then derived. The argument is carried out in detail for the Lieb-Liniger model and the Heisenberg XXZ chain. The Fermi-Hubbard model is not covered, since no self-conserved current seems to exist. It is also explained how from the existence of a boost operator a self-conserved current can be deduced.
