Laterally Differentiated Polymorphs: a route to multifunctional nanostructures

Multifunctional materials can exhibit emergent behavior from the coupling of two or more different properties. For example, coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric order enables electrical control of the magnetic state, enabling for example magnetoelectric memory or logic devices that combine the nonvolatility of magnetic order with the energy efficiency of voltage control. Magnetic iron garnets have outstanding magnonic and magnetooptical properties making them valuable in a range of technologies, but they have not been successfully incorporated into thin film two-phase magnetoelectric nanocomposites. Taking advantage of heterogeneously patterned substrates, this work demonstrates the engineering of garnet-perovskite composites in which both phases are polymorphs with the same composition but dramatically different structures and properties. Applying an electric field to the perovskite phase modulates the magnon dispersion and magnetooptical response of the garnet, opening a path to voltage-controlled garnet devices.

Low-temperature synthesis of high quality Ni-Fe layered double hydroxides hexagonal platelets

This paper describes the wet-chemistry synthesis of highly crystalline hexagonal flakes of Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) produced at temperature as low as 100 oC. The flakes with diameter in the range of 0.5-1.5 um and the thickness between 15 and 20 nm were obtained by homogeneous precipitation method with the use of triethanolamine (TEA) and urea. By analyzing the intermediate products, it is suggested that, differently from previous reports, a thermodynamically metastable iron oxyhydroxide and Ni-TEA complex are firstly formed at room temperature. Subsequently, when the mixture is heated to 100 oC and the pH increases due to the thermal decomposition of urea, Ni2+ and Fe3+ are slowly released and then recombine, thus leading to formation of pure, highly-crystalline Ni-Fe LDH flakes. This material showed promising results as an electrocatalyst in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) providing an overpotential value of 0.36 V.

$^{17}$O NMR Measurements on Superconducting Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2} \cdot y$H$_{2}$O

An $^{17}$O NMR measurement was performed on nonoriented polycrystalline Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O with superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_\text{c} = 4.6$ K. A weak temperature dependence was observed in the Knight shift at the O site ($^{17}K$). The spin part of $^{17}K$ ($^{17}K_{\rm spin}$) is estimated from the plot of $^{17}K$ against bulk susceptibility $χ$. The $^{17}K_{\rm spin}$ decreases in the SC state, indicative of the decrease in the in-plane component of the spin susceptibility. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ at the O site $^{17}(1/T_1)$ shows a good scaling with $1/T_1$ at the Co site $^{59}(1/T_1)$. This indicates that the spin fluctuations at the O site originate from the Co spin dynamics. The relationships between $^{17}(1/T_1T)$ and $^{17}K_{\rm spin}$ and between $^{17}(1/T_1T)$ and $^{59}(1/T_1T)$ show the development of incommensurate fluctuations at {\bf q $\sim$ 0} other than {\bf q $=$ 0} below 30 K. A clear indication of ferromagnetic correlations at {\bf q $=$ 0} was not observed from the present $^{17}$O-NMR studies.

Possible unconventional superconductivity in Na$_x$CoO$_2$yH$_2$O probed by $μ$SR

The superconducting property of recently discovered sodium cobalt oxyhydrate, Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O ($T_c=4.5$ K), has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) down to 2 K. It was found that the zero-field muon spin relaxation rate is independent of the temperature, indicating that no static magnetism appears in this compound, at least above 2 K. The result also provides evidence against the breakdown of time-reversal symmetry for the superconducting order parameter. Meanwhile, the muon Knight shift at 60 kOe shows no obvious reduction below $T_c$, suggesting that the local spin susceptibility is preserved upon a superconducting transition. Considering these observations, possible unconventional superconductivity of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O is discussed.

Unconventional Upper- and Lower-Critical Fields and Normal-State Magnetic Susceptibility of the Novel Superconducting Compound $Na_{0.35} Co O_2 \cdot 1.3 H_2O$

Magnetic properties of the novel layered superconductor, Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O have been investigated. From the temperature dependence and field dependence of the magnetization, the superconducting transition temperature, as well as upper- and lower-critical fields have been estimated to be $T_{C}=4.6$ K, $H_{C2}(0)=61.0$ T and $H_{C1}(0)=28.1$ Oe. These values give quite unusual phenomenological parameters, \textit{i.e.}, coherent length, penetration depth and Ginzburg-Landau parameter of $ξ=2.32$ nm, $λ=5.68\times 10^{3}$ Å and $κ\equivλ/ξ=244$, suggesting an unconventional nature of superconductivity. Normal-state magnetic susceptibility shows an upturn below 130 K, which is confirmed to be inherent by high-field magnetization data. The upturn may have relevance to the mechanism of the superconductivity.
