Particle creation using the classical stochastic method

We compute the particle creation of a harmonic oscillator using the classical stochastic method. This recently constructed method reproduces all the vacuum expectation values in quantum theory. We prepare the vacuum state at the initial time and evolve it over time using Langevin equations of motion. By averaging over the ensemble, we compute the energy of the state at the final time and determine the amount of particles created. We verify that the particle creation agrees with predictions from quantum theory and thus give an evidence that this method can really compute the quantum dynamics.

Classical Statistical simulation of Quantum Field Theory

We propose a procedure of computing the n-point function in perturbation theory of the quantum field theory as the average over the complex Gaussian noises in a classical theory. The complex Gaussian noises are the sources for the creation and annihilation of particles and the energy of the resultant configuration is the same as the zero point energy of the corresponding quantum field theory.

Compact Star of Holographic Nuclear Matter and GW170817

We use a holographic model of quantum chromodynamics to extract the equation of state (EoS) for the cold nuclear matter of moderate baryon density. This model is based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the deconfined Witten's geometry with the additional point-like D4-brane instanton configuration as the holographic baryons. Our EoS takes the following doubly-polytropic form: $ ε=2.629 {\cal A}^{-0.192} p^{1.192}+0.131 {\cal A}^{0.544} p^{0.456}$ with $\cal A$ a tunable parameter of order $10^{-1}$, where $ε$ and $p$ are the energy density and pressure, respectively. The sound speed satisfies the causality constraint and breaks the sound barrier. We solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for the compact stars and obtain the reasonable compactness for the proper choices of $\cal A$. Based on these configurations we further calculate the tidal deformability of the single and binary stars. We find our results agree with the inferred values of LIGO/Virgo data analysis for GW170817.

Lorentz breaking terms from Einstein gravity

We construct an action which is invariant under the foliation preserving diffeomorphism from the Einstein Hilbert action. Starting from the Einstein Hilbert action, we introduce the gauge invariance under the anisotropic rescaling by using the Stückelberg method. We then introduce the gauge field corresponds to the anisotropic rescaling, and the Stückelberg field turns out to be the Nambu-Goldstone boson. The Nambu-Goldstone boson, however, is not completely eaten by the massive gauge field and the Nambu-Goldstone boson can be integrated out from the action. Then the resultant action is a Horava-Lifshitz type action which contains $R^3$ term.

Power counting renormalizability of scalar theory in Lifshitz spacetime

We analyse the power counting renormalizability of scalar theory in Lifshitz spacetime in D+2 dimensions. We show the spectral dimension becomes 2+(D/z) (z is the critical exponent) after integrating out the radion field. We comment on the AdS/CFT correspondence, and on how to avoid the Lifshitz singularity by flowing into AdS spacetime in the infrared. We also comment on the quantum gravity in Lifshitz spacetime.

Power counting renormalizability of quantum gravity in Lifshitz spacetime

We analyse the power counting renormalizability of the quantum field theory of Einstein or Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in D+2 dimensional Lifshitz spacetime. We show the spectral dimension becomes 2+(D/z) at the UV region where z is the critical exponent. Since it is larger than two, the quantum theory of Einstein gravity is not power counting renormalizable. For the pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where Lifshitz spacetime is allowed only when the parameters are fine tuned, it happens that the graviton modes do not propagate and the quantum field theory is accidentally renormalizable when z>=D. Another method is discretizing the radial coordinate which changes the spectral dimension to 1+(D/z) at the UV region. Since our four dimensional spacetime is continuous, the four dimensional Lorentz symmetry is recovered at the low energy and the power counting renormalizability is still kept for z>=D, if the spacetime near the null singularity in Lifshitz spacetime is modified into AdS spacetime and the discrete radial direction is compactified like a brane world scenario. We also comment on the AdS/CFT correspondence.

One loop divergences in quantum gravity coupled with nonlocal matter fields

We study the matter one-loop quantum corrections to the gravitational sector in a gravity theory coupled with a nonlocal scalar field. We find that non-renormalizable divergences disappear when the propagator of the scalar field approaches to a non-zero constant at high momentum, while the vacuum energy is still divergent. We also comment on non-local modification of fermion, gauge field and graviton.

Negative mode of Schwarzschild black hole from the thermodynamic instability

The thermodynamic instability, for example the negative heat capacity, of a black hole implies the existence of off-shell negative mode(s) (tachyonic mode(s)) around the black hole geometry in the Euclidean path integral formalism of quantum gravity. We explicitly construct an off-shell negative mode inspired from the negative heat capacity in the case of Schwarzschild black hole with/without a cosmological constant. We carefully check the boundary conditions, i.e. the regularity at the horizon, the traceless condition, and the normalizability.

Unruh Effect and Holography

We study the Unruh effect on the dynamics of quarks and mesons in the context of AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence. We adopt an AdS$_5$ metric with the boundary Rindler horizon extending into a bulk Rindler-like horizon, which yields the thermodynamics with Unruh temperature verified by computing the boundary stress tensor. We then embed in it a probe fundamental string and a $D7$ brane in such a way that they become the dual of an accelerated quark and a meson in Minkowski space, respectively. Using the standard procedure of holographic renormalization, we calculate the chiral condensate, and also the spectral functions for both the accelerated quark and meson. Especially, we extract the corresponding strength of random force of the Langevin dynamics and observe that it can characterize the phase transition of meson melting. This result raises an issue toward a formulation of complementarity principle for the Rindler horizon. We find most of the dynamical features are qualitatively similar to the ones in the thermal bath dual to the AdS black hole background, though they could be quite different quantitatively.

Quark Mass Dependence of Hadron Spectrum in Holographic QCD

We compute a shift of baryon mass spectra due to quark masses in perturbation, in Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. We find the shift for the ground state nucleons to be δM = 4.1 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}], which is consistent with the current lattice QCD result. We predict the same value of the shift for N(1535) and Delta, while a larger value 7.7 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}] for Roper N(1440). We also present some evidences that the shifts of the vector meson masses are suppressed in the large 't Hooft coupling limit.

Membrane scattering from Bagger-Lambert theory

In this note, we discuss membrane scattering from the three dimensional N=8 superconformal theory with SO(8) global symmetry constructed by Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson. We discuss whether the one loop effective potential consistently reproduces the Newton potential of membranes moving in an eleven dimensional orbifold space.

Quark Mass Deformation of Holographic Massless QCD

We propose several quark mass deformations of the holographic model of massless QCD using the D4/D8/D8bar brane configuration proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto. The deformations are based on introducing additional D4 or D6 branes away from the QCD D4 branes. The idea is similar to extended technicolor theories, where the chiral symmetry breaking by additional D-branes are mediated to QCD to induce non-zero quark masses. In the D-brane picture as well as the holographic dual gravity description, the quark and the pion masses are generated by novel worldsheet instantons with finite area. We also derive the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation, and find the value of the chiral condensate in the Sakai-Sugimoto model.

Negative modes of Schwarzschild black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

We study non conformal negative modes of Schwarzschild black holes in the five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory with a zero or negative cosmological constant, in the context of the semiclassical quantum gravity formulated by the path integral. We find an unique negative mode when the black hole has a negative heat capacity which is the same in Einstein theory. On the other hand, we still find negative modes inside a parameter region where a small black hole has a positive heat capacity. The number is one/two for the case of zero/negative cosmological constant respectively. In the rest of the parameter region where the heat capacity is positive, we find no negative modes. We discuss the possible physical understanding of having one or two negative modes.

Holographic Construction of Technicolor Theory

We construct a dual description of technicolor theory based on the D4/D8 brane configuration. A strongly-coupled technicolor theory is identified as the effective theory on D-branes, and from the gauge/gravity correspondence, we explore the weakly-coupled holographic description of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. It is found from the D-brane probe action that the masses of W and Z bosons are given by the decay constant of technipion, and the technimesons become hierarchically heavy. Moreover, the couplings of heavier modes to standard model fermions are rather suppressed. The oblique correction parameters are also evaluated and found to be small except for the S parameter, which can be reduced by modifying the model. The fermion fields are introduced at the intersections of D-branes and their masses are generated via massive gauge bosons from open strings stretching between D-branes.

Holographic QCD and Pion Mass

To realize massive pions, we study variations of the holographic model of massless QCD using the D4/D8/anti-D8 brane configuration proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto. We propose deformations which break the chiral symmetry explicitly and compute the mass of the pions and vector mesons. The observed value of the pion mass can be obtained. We also argue a chiral perturbation corresponding to our deformation.

A Holographic Dual of CFT with Flavor on de Sitter Space

We introduce a D7-brane probe in AdS_5 x S^5 background in a way that the 4d part of the induced metric on D7-brane becomes 4d de-Sitter space (dS_4) inside AdS_5 instead of 4d Minkowski space. Although supersymmetry is completely broken, we obtain a static configuration and show the absence of dynamical tachyonic modes. Following holographic renormalization we renormalize the Dirac-Born-Infeld action of D7-brane and we completely fix the counter terms including finite contributions from the consistency under various limits. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence we study the chiral condensate and meson spectrum of CFT dual theory on dS_4 where the energy scale is identified with the direction normal to dS_4 space in AdS_5. We identify and properly reproduce the finite temperature effects on dS_4. Our results support the holographic interpretation of the Randall-Sundrum model with non fine-tuned dS_4 brane(s) and the holography between AdS_p (or dS_p) bulk gravity and CFT on dS_{p-1} called the (A)dS/dS correspondence.

Anomalies and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms on warped orbifolds and large hierarchies

The anomalies in five-dimensional orbifold theories are examined in a generic type of non-factorizable geometries. In spite of complicated fermion wavefunctions, the shape of anomaly is found to be identical to that of flat theories. In particular it is split evenly on the orbifold fixed points. This result also follows from the arguments on the AdS/CFT correspondence and an anomaly cancellation mechanism. The cancellation with Chern-Simons term works if the four-dimensional effective theory is free from chiral anomalies. We also discuss the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term in warped supersymmetric theories. Unlike the gauge anomaly, FI divergences reside not only on the orbifold fixed points but also in the whole five-dimensional bulk. The effect of the FI term is to generate supersymmetric masses for charged hypermultiplets, which are no longer constant but have metric factor dependence. We calculate the spectrum and wavefunctions of Kaluza-Klein modes in the presence of the FI term and discuss phenomenological implications to quark-lepton masses and large scale hierarchies.

Classical Stability of Charged Black Branes and the Gubser-Mitra Conjecture

We have investigated the classical stability of magnetically charged black $p$-brane solutions for string theories that include the case studied by Gregory and Laflamme. It turns out that the stability behaves very differently depending on a coupling parameter between dilaton and gauge fields. In the case of Gregory and Laflamme, it has been known that the black brane instability decreases monotonically as the charge of black branes increases and finally disappears at the extremal point. For more general cases we found that, when the coupling parameter is small, black brane solutions become stable even before reaching to the extremal point. On the other hand, when the coupling parameter is large, black branes are always unstable and moreover the instability does not continue to decrease, but starts to increase again as they approach to the extremal point. However all extremal black branes are shown to be stable even in this case. It has also been shown that main features of the classical stability are in good agreement with the local thermodynamic behavior of the corresponding black hole system through the Gubser-Mitra conjecture. Some implications of our results are also discussed.
