Dynamical aspects of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled kicked tops

We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled, composite quantum systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system, using coupled kicked tops. The linear entropy for the subsystem (a kicked top) is employed as a measure of entanglement. A perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate is derived. The formula contains a correlation function that can be evaluated only from the information of uncoupled tops. Using this expression and the assumption that the correlation function decays exponentially which is plausible for chaotic tops, it is shown that {\it the increment of the strength of chaos does not enhance the production rate of entanglement} when the coupling is weak enough and the subsystems (kicked tops) are strongly chaotic. The result is confirmed by numerical experiments. The perturbative approach is also applied to a weakly chaotic region, where tori and chaotic sea coexist in the corresponding classical phase space, to reexamine a recent numerical study that suggests an intimate relationship between the linear stability of the corresponding classical trajectory and the entanglement production rate.

Stability of quantum states of finite macroscopic systems against classical noises, perturbations from environments, and local measurements

We study the stability of quantum states of macroscopic systems of finite volume V, against weak classical noises (WCNs), weak perturbations from environments (WPEs), and local measurements (LMs). We say that a pure state is `fragile' if its decoherence rate is anomalously great, and `stable against LMs' if the result of a LM is not affected by another LM at a distant point. By making full use of the locality and huge degrees of freedom, we show the following: (i) If square fluctuation of every additive operator is O(V) or less for a pure state, then it is not fragile in any WCNs or WPEs. (ii) If square fluctuations of some additive operators are O(V^2) for a pure state, then it is fragile in some WCNs or WPEs. (iii) If a state (pure or mixed) has the `cluster property,' then it is stable against LMs, and vice versa. These results have many applications, among which we discuss the mechanism of symmetry breaking in finite systems.

Saturation of the production of quantum entanglement between weakly coupled mapping systems in strongly chaotic region

The production of quantum entanglement between weakly coupled mapping systems, whose classical counterparts are both strongly chaotic, is investigated. In the weak coupling regime, it is shown that time correlation functions of the unperturbed systems determine the entanglement production. In particular, we elucidate that the increment of nonlinear parameter of coupled kicked tops does not accelerate the entanglement production in the strongly chaotic region. An approach to the dynamical inhibition of entanglement is suggested.

Cluster Property and Robustness of Ground States of Interacting Many Bosons

We study spatial correlation functions of local operators of interacting many bosons confined in a box of a large, but volume V, for various `ground states' whose energy densities are almost degenerate. The ground states include the coherent state of interacting bosons (CSIB), the number state of interacting bosons (NSIB), and the number-phase squeezed state of interacting bosons, which interpolates between the CSIB and NSIB. It was shown previously that only the CSIB is robust (i.e., does not decohere for a macroscopically long time) against the leakage of bosons into an environment. We show that for the CSIB the spatial correlation of any local operators A(r) and B(r') (which are localized around r and r', respectively) vanishes as |r - r' | \sim V^{1/3} \to \infty, i.e., the CSIB has the `cluster property.' In contrast, the other ground states do not possess the cluster property. Therefore, we have successfully shown that the robust state has the cluster property. This ensures the consistency of the field theory of bosons with macroscopic theories.

Decoherence of anomalously-fluctuating states of finite macroscopic systems

In quantum systems of a macroscopic size V, such as interacting many particles and quantum computers with many qubits, there exist pure states such that fluctuations of some intensive operator A is anomalously large, <δA^2> = O(V^0), which is much larger than that assumed in thermodynamics, <δA^2> = O(1/V). By making full use of the locality, we show, starting from Hamiltonians of macroscopic degrees of freedom, that such states decohere at anomalously fast rates when they are weakly perturbed from environments.

Fragility of Thermodynamically-Abnormal Ground States of Finite Systems

We study a general macroscopic quantum system of a finite size, which will exhibit a symmetry breaking if the system size goes to infinity, when the system interacts with an environment. We evaluate the decoherence rates of the anomalously fluctuating vacuum (AFV), which is the symmetric ground state, and the pure phase vacua (PPVs). By making full use of the locality and huge degrees of freedom, we show that there can exist an interaction with an environment which makes the decoherence rate of the AFV anomalously fast, whereas PPVs are less fragile.

Energies and collapse times of symmetric and symmetry-breaking states of finite systems with a U(1) symmetry

We study quantum systems of volume V, which will exhibit the breaking of a U(1) symmetry in the limit of V \to \infty, when V is large but finite. We estimate the energy difference between the `symmetric ground state' (SGS), which is the lowest-energy state that does not breaks the symmetry, and a `pure phase vacuum' (PPV), which approaches a symmetry-breaking vacuum as V \to \infty. Under some natural postulates on the energy of the SGS, it is shown that PPVs always have a higher energy than the SGS, and we derive a lower bound of the excess energy. We argue that the lower bound is O(V^0), which becomes much larger than the excitation energies of low-lying excited states for a large V. We also discuss the collapse time of PPVs for interacting many bosons. It is shown that the wave function collapses in a microscopic time scale, because PPVs are not energy eigenstates. We show, however, that for PPVs the expectation value of any observable, which is a finite polynomial of boson operators and their derivatives, does not collapse for a macroscopic time scale. In this sense, the collapse time of PPVs is macroscopically long.

Charge superselection rule does not rule out pure states of subsystems to be coherent superpositions of states with different charges

We consider a huge quantum system that is subject to the charge superselection rule, which requires that any pure state must be an eigenstate of the total charge. We regard some parts of the system as "subsystems," and the rest as an environment E. We assume that one does not measure anything of E, i.e., one is only interested in observables of the subsystems. We show that there exist states with the following properties: (i) Its reduced density operator is completely equivalent to a vector state of the subsystems for any gauge-invariant observable of the subsystems. (ii) The vector state is a simple product of vector states of individual subsystems, each of which is not an eigenstate of the charge of each subsystem. Furthermore, one can associate to each subsystem its vector state, which is a pure state, and observables which are not necessarily gauge invariant in each subsystem. These results justify taking (a) superpositions of states with different charges, and (b) non-gauge-invariant operators, such as the order parameter of the breaking of the gauge symmetry, as observables, for subsystems.

Robustness of Wave Functions of Interacting Many Bosons in a Leaky Box

We study the robustness, against the leakage of bosons, of wave functions of interacting many bosons confined in a finite box, by deriving and analyzing a general equation of motion for the reduced density operator. We identify a robust wave function that remains a pure state, whereas other wave functions, such as the Bogoliubov's ground state and the ground state with a fixed number of bosons, evolve into mixed states. Although these states all have the off-diagonal long-range order, and almost the same energy densities, we argue that only the robust state is realized as a macroscopic quantum state.

Interacting One-Dimensional Electrons Driven by Two-Dimensional Reservoir Electrons

We derive an effective 1D theory from the Hamiltonian of the 3D system which consists of a mesoscopic conductor and reservoirs. We assume that the many-body interaction have the same magnitude in the conductor as that in the reservoirs, in contrast to the previous theories which made the ad hoc assumption that the many-body interaction were absent in the reservoirs. We show the following: (i) The effective potentials of impurities and two-body interaction for the 1D modes become weaker as $x$ goes away from the conductor. (ii) On the other hand, the interaction between the 1D and the reservoir modes is important in the reservoir regions, where the reservoir modes excite and attenuate the 1D modes through the interaction. (iii) As a result, the current $\hat I_1$ of the 1D modes is not conserved, whereas the total current $\hat I$ is of course conserved. (iv) For any steady state the total current $\bra I \ket$, its equilibrium fluctuation $\bra δI^2 \ket^{eq}$ at low frequency, and non-equilibrium fluctuation $\bra δI^2 \ket^{noneq}$ at low frequency, of the original system are independent of $x$, whereas $\bra δI^2 \ket^{eq}$ and $\bra δI^2 \ket^{noneq}$ at higher frequencies may depend on $x$. (v) Utilizing this property, we can evaluate $\bra I \ket$, $\bra δI^2 \ket^{eq}$, and $\bra δI^2 \ket^{noneq}$ at low frequency from those of the 1D current $\hat I_1$. (vi) In general, the transmittance $T$ in the Landauer formula should be evaluated from a single-body Hamiltonian which includes a Hartree potential created by the density deformation which is caused by the external bias.
