A systematic method for constructing time discretizations of integrable lattice systems: local equations of motion

We propose a new method for discretizing the time variable in integrable lattice systems while maintaining the locality of the equations of motion. The method is based on the zero-curvature (Lax pair) representation and the lowest-order "conservation laws". In contrast to the pioneering work of Ablowitz and Ladik, our method allows the auxiliary dependent variables appearing in the stage of time discretization to be expressed locally in terms of the original dependent variables. The time-discretized lattice systems have the same set of conserved quantities and the same structures of the solutions as the continuous-time lattice systems; only the time evolution of the parameters in the solutions that correspond to the angle variables is discretized. The effectiveness of our method is illustrated using examples such as the Toda lattice, the Volterra lattice, the modified Volterra lattice, the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice (an integrable semi-discrete nonlinear Schroedinger system), and the lattice Heisenberg ferromagnet model. For the Volterra lattice and modified Volterra lattice, we also present their ultradiscrete analogues.

Classification of polynomial integrable systems of mixed scalar and vector evolution equations. I

We perform a classification of integrable systems of mixed scalar and vector evolution equations with respect to higher symmetries. We consider polynomial systems that are homogeneous under a suitable weighting of variables. This paper deals with the KdV weighting, the Burgers (or potential KdV or modified KdV) weighting, the Ibragimov-Shabat weighting and two unfamiliar weightings. The case of other weightings will be studied in a subsequent paper. Making an ansatz for undetermined coefficients and using a computer package for solving bilinear algebraic systems, we give the complete lists of 2nd order systems with a 3rd order or a 4th order symmetry and 3rd order systems with a 5th order symmetry. For all but a few systems in the lists, we show that the system (or, at least a subsystem of it) admits either a Lax representation or a linearizing transformation. A thorough comparison with recent work of Foursov and Olver is made.

N-soliton collision in the Manakov model

We investigate soliton collisions in the Manakov model, which is a system of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations that is integrable via the inverse scattering method. Computing the asymptotic forms of the general N-soliton solution in the limits $t \to \mp \infty$, we elucidate a mechanism that factorizes an N-soliton collision into a nonlinear superposition of $N \choose 2$ pair collisions with arbitrary order. This removes the misunderstanding that multi-particle effects exist in the Manakov model and provides a new ``set-theoretical'' solution to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. As a by-product, we also obtain a new nontrivial relation among determinants and extended determinants.

Integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equations

We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Satsuma and Burgers equations. We also discuss integrable discretizations of the sine-Gordon equation, the massive Thirring model and their generalizations.

Symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equations: singularity analysis and integrability

The integrability of a system of two symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations with parameter coefficients is tested by means of the singularity analysis. It is proven that the system passes the Painlevé test for integrability only in ten distinct cases, of which two are new. For one of the new cases, a Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained; for the other one, the equations of the system are uncoupled by a nonlinear transformation.

Integrable Discretization of the Coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

A discrete version of the inverse scattering method proposed by Ablowitz and Ladik is generalized to study an integrable full-discretization (discrete time and discrete space) of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The generalization enables one to solve the initial-value problem. Soliton solutions and conserved quantities of the full-discrete system are constructed.

Multi-Field Integrable Systems Related to WKI-Type Eigenvalue Problems

Higher flows of the Heisenberg ferromagnet equation and the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa equation are generalized into multi-component systems on the basis of the Lax formulation. It is shown that there is a correspondence between the multi-component systems through a gauge transformation. An integrable semi-discretization of the multi-component higher Heisenberg ferromagnet system is obtained.
