Controllable valley and spin transports in ferromagnetic silicene junctions

We investigate charge, valley, and spin transports in normal/ferromagnetic/normal silicene junc- tion. We show that the charge, valley, and spin conductances in this junction oscillate with the length of the ferromagnetic silicene. It is also found that the current through this junction is valley and spin polarized due to the coupling between valley and spin degrees of freedom, and the valley and spin polarizations can be tuned by local application of a gate voltage. In particular, we find fully valley and spin polarized current by applying the electric field. We also obtain the condition for observing the fully valley and spin polarized current.

Spintronics and spincaloritronics in topological insulators

We study spintronics and spincaloritronics in topological insulators. We show spintronics effects in 2D topological insulator junctions and 3D topological insulators coupled to ferromagnets. We also investigate spin polarization on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a circularly polarized light and refraction at the junction between two topological insulators. As for spincaloritronics effects, we show transverse magnetic heat transport and thermoelectric transport in topological insulators. Finite-size effect in topological insulators and band structure engineering of interface states of topological insulators are also discussed.

Spin-current absorption by inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the spin-current absorption induced by an inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling due to impurities in metals. We consider the system with spin currents driven by the electric field or the spin accumulation. The resulting diffusive spin currents, including the gradient of the spin-orbit coupling strength, indicate the spin-current absorption at the interface, which is exemplified with experimentally relevant setups.

Josephson and proximity effects on the surface of a topological insulator

We investigate Josephson and proximity effects on the surface of a topological insulator on which superconductors and a ferromagnet are deposited. The superconducting regions are described by the conventional BCS Hamiltonian, rather than the superconducting Dirac Hamiltonian. Junction interfaces are assumed to be dirty. We obtain analytical expressions of the Josephson current and the proximity-induced anomalous Green's function on the topological insulator. The dependence of the Josephson effect on the junction length, the temperature, the chemical potential and the magnetization is discussed. It is also shown that the proximity-induced pairing on the surface of a topological insulator includes even and odd frequency triplet pairings as well as a conventional s-wave one.

Topological charge pumping effect by the magnetization dynamics on the Surface of Three-Dimensional Topological Insulators

We discuss a current dynamics on the surface of a 3-dimensional topological insulator induced by magnetization precession of a ferromagnet attached. It is found that the magnetization dynamics generates a direct charge current when the precession axis is within the surface plane. This rectification effect is due to a quantum anomaly and is topologically protected. The robustness of the rectification effect against first-varying exchange field and impurities is confirmed by explicit calculation.

Transverse Josephson effect due to spin-orbit coupling: Generation of transverse current without time-reversal symmetry breaking

We investigate transverse Josephson current in superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junctions where the normal metal has Rashba type spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that trans- verse current arises from the spin-orbit coupling in the normal metal. This effect is specific to superconducting current and the transverse current vanishes in the normal state. In addition, this transverse Josephson effect is purely stationary and applied magnetic field is unnecessary to realize this effect, in contrast to the Hall effect in the normal state. We also discuss physical interpretation of this effect, comparing with the spin Hall effect.

Charge pumping due to triplet vector chirality in ferromagnet/triplet superconductor junctions

We investigate charge pumping in ferromagnet/triplet superconductor junctions where the magnetization of the ferromagnet is inhomogeneous and dynamical. It is shown that charge current is pumped due to the coupling of the localized spin with triplet vector spin chirality, vector spin chirality formed by the triplet vector of Cooper pairing. Physical mechanism of the charge pumping is also discussed.

Electromagnetic spin polarization on the surface of topological insulator

We study the spin polarization of the electrons on the surface of topological insulators under a dc electric field or a circularly polarized light by using Keldysh Green's function formalism. When a dc electric field $E_x \sim 10^{3} {\rm V/m}$ is applied, a spin polarization $<σ_{y}> \simeq 5.2 \times 10^{-8}{\rm Å^{-2}}$ is induced. Furthermore, we also find that a light illumination induces the out-of-plane component of the spin polarization as a result of the inverse Faraday effect. The magnitude of the spin polarization is proportional to the square of the lifetime $τ$ and $<σ_{z}> \simeq 2 \times 10^{-10}{\rm Å^{-2}}$ for typical parameters. Finally, we investigate the spin polarization in the presence of the warping term. By the symmetry consideration of the system, we find that the out-of-plane spin polarization is cubic of the current and that the magnitude of the induced spin polarization depends on the direction of the applied current.

Current induced magnetization reversal on the surface of a topological insulator

We study dynamics of the magnetization coupled to the surface Dirac fermions of a three di- mensional topological insulator. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the presence of charge current, we find current induced magnetization dynamics and discuss the possibility of mag- netization reversal. The torque from the current injection depends on the transmission probability through the ferromagnet and shows nontrivial dependence on the exchange coupling. The mag- netization dynamics is a direct manifestation of the inverse spin-galvanic effect and hence another ferromagnet is unnecessary to induce spin transfer torque in contrast to the conventional setup.

Transverse magnetic heat transport on the topological surface

We investigate transverse magnetic heat transport on the surface of a topological insulator on which a ferromagnet is attached. We present general expressions of the Nernst coefficient and the thermal Hall conductivity, which are reduced to simple forms at low temperatures. It is shown that the Nernst coefficient and the thermal Hall conductivity show non-monotonous dependence on temperature. At low temperature, they have linear dependence on temperature. From the behavior of the Nernst coefficient at low temperature, one can estimate the magnitude of the gap induced by time-reversal symmetry breaking. Moreover, we find that the Nernst coefficient can be used to map the Berry phase structure. These results open up possibility to control thermal Hall currents magnetically.

Anomalous Meissner effect in NS junction with spin-active interface

We investigate Meissner effect in normal metal/superconductor junctions where the interface is spin-active. We find that orbital magnetic susceptibility of the normal metal shows highly nontrivial behaviors. In particular, the magnetic susceptibility depends on the temperature in an oscillatory fashion, accompanied by its sign change. Correspondingly, magnetic field and current density can spatially oscillate in the normal metal. The possible spontaneous formation of the current pattern is also discussed. These results are attributed to the generation of odd-frequency pairing due to the spin-active interface.

Topology of Andreev Bound States with Flat Dispersion

A theory of dispersionless Andreev bound states on surfaces of time-reversal invariant unconventional superconductors is presented. The generalized criterion for the dispersionless Andreev bound state is derived from the bulk-edge correspondence, and the chiral spin structure of the dispersionless Andreev bound states is argued from which the Andreev bound state is stabilized. Then we summarize the criterion in a form of index theorems. The index theorems are proved in a general framework to certify the bulk-edge correspondence. As concrete examples, we discuss (i) dxy-wave superconductor (ii) px-wave superconductor, and (iii) noncentrosymmetric superconductors. In the last example, we find a peculiar time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion. The time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion shows an unusual response to the Zeeman magnetic field, which can be used to identify it experimentally.

Anomalous magnetic transport in ferromagnetic graphene junctions

We investigate magnetotransport in a ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic graphene junction where a gate electrode is attached to the normal segment. It is shown that the charge conductance can be maximal at an antiparallel configuration of the magnetizations. Moreover, we demonstrate that both the magnitude and the sign of the spin-transfer torque can be controlled by means of the gate voltage in the normal segment. In this way, the present system constitutes a spin-transfer torque transistor. These anomalous phenomena are attributed to the combined effect of the exchange field and the Dirac dispersion of graphene. Our prediction opens up the possibility of moving domain walls parallel or antiparallel to the current in a controllable fashion by means of a local gate voltage.

Transport Properties in Ferromagnetic Josephson Junction between Triplet Superconductors

Charge and spin Josephson currents in a ballistic superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junction with spin-triplet pairing symmetry are studied using the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation. The gap vector of superconductors has an arbitrary relative angle with respect to magnetization of the ferromagnetic layer. We clarify the effects of the thickness of ferromagnetic layer and magnitude of the magnetization on the Josephson charge and spin currents. We find that 0-πtransition can occur except for the case that the exchange field and d-vector are in nearly perpendicular configuration. We also show how spin current flows due to misorientation between the exchange field and d-vector.

Surface density of states and topological edge states in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study Andreev bound state (ABS) and surface density of state (SDOS) of non-centrosymmetric superconductor where spin-singlet $d$-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet $p$ (or $f)$-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For $d_{xy} + p$-wave pairing, ABS appears as a zero energy state. The present ABS is a Majorana edge mode preserving the time reversal symmetry. We calculate topological invariant number and discuss the relevance to a single Majorana edge mode. In the presence of the Majorana edge mode, the SDOS depends strongly on the direction of the Zeeman field.

Anomalous Andreev bound state in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bias conductance peak.

Supercurrent-Induced Magnetization Dynamics

We investigate supercurrent-induced magnetization dynamics in a Josephson junction with two misaligned ferromagnetic layers, and demonstrate a variety of effects by solving numerically the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility to obtain supercurrent-induced magnetization switching for an experimentally feasible set of parameters, and clarify the favorable condition for the realization of magnetization reversal. These results constitute a superconducting analogue to conventional current-induced magnetization dynamics and indicate how spin-triplet supercurrents may be utilized for practical purposes in spintronics.

Spin and Charge Currents in SNS Josephson Junction with f-wave Pairing Symmetry

We study transport properties and also local density of states in a clean superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junction with triplet f-wave superconductors based on the Eilenberger equation. Effects of thickness of normal metal and misorientation between gap vector of superconductors on the spin and charge currents are investigated. Spin current, which stems from the misalignment of d-vectors, in the absence of charge current for some values of phase difference between superconductors is found. We also find unconventional behavior of the spin current associated with 0-pitransition. The misalignment of d-vectors also gives rise to a zero energy peak in the density of states in the normal metal.
