Apparent Horizon Formation and Hoop Conjecture in Non-axisymmetric Spaces

We investigate the validity of Thorne's hoop conjecture in non-axisymmetric spacetimes by examining the formation of apparent horizons numerically. If spaces have a discrete symmetry about one axis, we can specify the boundary conditions to determine an apparent horizon even in non-axisymmetric spaces. We implement, for the first time, the ``hoop finder'' in non-axisymmetric spaces with a discrete symmetry. We construct asymptotically flat vacuum solutions at a moment of time symmetry. Two cases are examined: black holes distributed on a ring, and black holes on a spherical surface. It turns out that calculating ${\cal C}$ is reduced to solving an ordinary differential equation. We find that even in non-axisymmetric spaces the existence or nonexistence of an apparent horizon is consistent with the inequality: ${\cal C} \siml 4πM$.

Determining the Equation of State of the Expanding Universe: Inverse Problem in Cosmology

Even if the luminosity distance as a function of redshift is obtained accurately using, for example, Type Ia supernovae, the equation of state of the Universe cannot be determined uniquely but depends on one free parameter $Ω_{k0} ={k}/(a_0^2H_0^2)$, where $a_0$ and $H_0$ are the present scale factor and the Hubble parameter, respectively. This degeneracy might be resolved if, for example, the time variations of the redshift of quasars are measured as proposed recently by Loeb. Therefore the equation of state of the Universe (or the metric of the universe) might be determined without any theoretical assumption on the matter content of the Universe in future.

Numerical Study of Inhomogeneous Pre-Big-Bang Inflationary Cosmology

We study numerically the inhomogeneous pre-big-bang inflation in a spherically symmetric space-time. We find that a large initial inhomogeneity suppresses the onset of the pre-big-bang inflation. We also find that even if the pre-big-bang inflationary stage is realized, the initial inhomogeneities are not homogenized. Namely, during the pre-big-bang inflation ``hairs''(irregularities) do not fall, in sharp contrast to the usual (potential energy dominated) inflation where initial inhomogeneity and anisotropy are damped and thus the resulting universe is less sensitive to initial conditions.

Resolving the singularity of the Hawking-Turok type instanton

We point out that the singular instanton of Hawking-Turok type, in which the singularity occurs due to the divergence of a massless scalar field, can be generated by Euclideanized regular $p$-brane solutions in string (or M-) theory upon compactification to four dimensions.

The Luminosity Distance, the Equation of State, and the Geometry of the Universe

The second derivative of the luminosity distance with respect to the redshift is written in terms of the deceleration parameter $q_0$. We point out that the third derivative contains the information regarding the sound speed of cosmic matter as well as the curvature of the universe. We restrict physically possible parameter ranges of the coefficients. It is found that there is a relation between the coefficients in a flat universe model with matter such that $c_{s0}(1+w_{\rm x0})=0$ ($c_{s0}$ is the total sound speed of the matter component and $w_{\rm x0}$=$p_{\rm x0}/ρ_{\rm x0}$).

Observational tests of x-matter models

We study gravitational lensing statistics, matter power spectra and the angular power spectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in x-matter models. We adopt an equation-of-state of x-matter which can express a wide range of matter from the pressureless dust to the cosmological constant. A new ingredient in this model is the sound speed of the x-component in addition to the equation-of-state $w_0=p_{x0}/ρ_{x0}$. Except for the cosmological constant case, the perturbations of x-matter itself are considered. Our primary interest is in the effect of non-zero sound speed on the structure formation and the CMB spectra. It is found that there exist parameter ranges where x-matter models are consistent with all current observations. The x-matter generally leaves imprints in the CMB anisotropy and the matter power spectrum, which should be detectable in future observations.

Black Hole Binary Formation in the Expanding Universe --- Three Body Problem Approximation ---

We study black hole MACHO binary formation through three-body interactions in the early universe at $t\sim 10^{-5}$s. The probability distribution functions of the eccentricity and the semimajor axis of binaries as well as of the coalescence time are obtained assuming that the black holes are randomly formed in space. We confirm that the previous order-of-magnitude estimate for the binary parameters is valid within $\sim 50%$ error. We find that the coalescence rate of the black hole MACHO binaries is $\sim 5 \times 10^{-2} \times 2^{\pm 1}$ events/year/galaxy taking into consideration several possible factors which may affect this estimate. This suggests that the event rate of coalescing binary black holes will be at least several events per year within 15 Mpc. The first LIGO/VIRGO interferometers in 2001 will be able to verify whether the MACHOs are black holes or not.

Imprints of the Metrically-coupled Dilaton on Density Perturbations in Inflationary Cosmology

Spectra of density perturbations produced during chaotic inflation are calculated, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account in a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity in which the dilaton is metrically coupled. Comparing the predicted spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies with the one observed by the COBE-DMR we calculate constraints on the parameters of these theories, which turn out to be stronger by an order-of-magnitude than those obtained from post-Newtonian experiments.

Two Boosted Black Holes in Asymptotically de Sitter Space-Time - Relation between Mass and Apparent Horizon Formation -

We study the apparent horizon for two boosted black holes in the asymptotically de Sitter space-time by solving the initial data on a space with punctures. We show that the apparent horizon enclosing both black holes is not formed if the conserved mass of the system (Abbott-Deser mass) is larger than a critical mass. The black hole with too large AD mass therefore cannot be formed in the asymptotically de Sitter space-time even though each black hole has any inward momentum. We also discuss the dynamical meaning of AD mass by examining the electric part of the Weyl tensor (the tidal force) for various initial data.

Cosmology with x-matter

Motivated by the possibility of $H_0t_0 > 1$ where $H_0$ and $t_0$ are the Hubble parameter and the age of the universe, respectively, we investigate the cosmology including x-matter. x-matter is expressed by the equation of state $p_x=w_0ρ_{x0} + c_s^2(ρ_x-ρ_{x0})$, where $p_x$, $ρ_x$ and $ρ_{x0}$ are the pressure, the density of x-matter and the density at present, respectively. $w_0$ and $c_s^2$ are functions of $ρ_x$ in general. x-matter has the most general form of the equation of state which is characterized by 1)violation of strong energy condition at present for $w_0 < -1/3$ ; 2) locally stable (i.e. $c_s^2\geq 0$); 3)causality is guaranteed ($c_s\leq 1$). Considering the case that $w_0$ and $c_s^2$ are constants, we find that there is a large parameter space of $(w_0,c_s^2,Ω_{x0})$ in which the model universe is consistent with the age of the universe and the observations of distant Type I supernovae.

Scalar gravitational wave from Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse in scalar- tensor theories of gravity

Unlike general relativity, scalar-tensor theories of gravity predict scalar gravitational waves even from a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse. We solve numerically the generation and propagation of the scalar gravitational wave from a spherically symmetric and homogeneous dust collapse under the approximation that we can neglect the back reaction of the scalar wave on the space-time, and examine how the amplitude, characteristic frequency and wave form of the observed scalar gravitational wave depend on the initial radius and mass of the dust and parameters contained in the theory. In the Brans-Dicke theory, through the observation of the scalar gravitational wave, it is possible to determine the initial radius and mass and a parameter contained in the theory. In the scalar-tensor theories, it would be possible to get the information of the first derivative of the coupling function contained in the theory because the wave form of the scalar gravitational wave greatly depends on it.

The Minimum Mass of the First Stars and the Anthropic Principle

The lower limit of the mass of the first stars suggested recently may imply the formation of massive stars of mass greater than 8 solar mass irrespective of the details of the initial mass function. The production of heavy metals from the first stars will ensure a requisite for the existence of life without the anthropic principle.

Critical Behavior in the Brans-Dicke Theory of Gravitation

The collapse of a massless scalar field in the Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation is studied in the analysis of both analytical solution and numerical one. By conformally transforming the Roberts's solution into the Brans-Dicke frame, we find for $ω> -3/2$ that a continuous self-similarity continues and that the critical exponent does depend on $ω$. By conformally transforming the Choptuik's solution into the Brans-Dicke frame, we find for $ω> -3/2$ that at the critical solution shows discrete self-similarity, however, the critical exponent depends strongly on $ω$ while the echoing parameter weakly on it.

Volume Expansion Rate and The Age of The Universe

Under four assumptions such that 1) Einstein's theory of gravity is correct, 2) existence of foliation by geodesic slicing, 3) the trace of the extrinsic curvature, $K$, is negative at the present time in observed region, that is, the observed universe is now expanding, 4) the strong energy condition is satisfied, we show that $H_{v0} t_{0} \leq 1$, where $H_v \equiv - K/3$ agrees with the Hubble parameter in the case of a homogeneous and isotropic universe, and $t_0$ is the age of the Universe. If $H_{v0} t_0 > 1$ is confirmed observationally, at least one of the four assumptions is incorrect.

Hubble Parameter in Void Universe

We investigate the distance-redshift relation in the simple void model. As discussed by Moffat and Tatarski, if the observer stays at the center of the void, the observed Hubble parameter is not so different from the background Hubble parameter. However, if the position of observer is off center of the void, we must consider the peculiar velocity correction which is measured by the observed dipole anisotropy of cosmic microwave background. This peculiar velocity correction for the redshift is crucial to determine the Hubble parameter and we shall discuss this effect. Further the results of Turner et al by the N-body simulation will be also considered.
