Detecting electron-phonon couplings during photo-induced phase transition

Photo-induced phase transitions have been intensively studied owing to the ability to control a material of interest in the ultrafast manner, which can induce exotic phases unable to be attained at equilibrium. However, the key mechanisms are still under debate, and it has currently been a central issue how the couplings between the electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom are evolving during photo-induced phase transitions. Here, we develop a new analysis method, frequency-domain angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, to gain precise insight into electron-phonon couplings during photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions for Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We demonstrate that multiple coherent phonons generated by displacive excitations show band-selective coupling to the electrons. Furthermore, we find that the lattice modulation corresponding to the 2 THz phonon mode, where Ta lattice is sheared along the a-axis, is the most relevant for the photo-induced semimetallic state.

Symmetry-breaking and spin-blockage effects on carrier dynamics in single-layer tungsten diselenide

Understanding carrier creation and evolution in materials initiated by pulsed optical excitation is central to developing ultrafast optoelectronics. We demonstrate herein that the dynamic response of a system can be drastically modified when its physical dimension is reduced to the atomic scale, the ultimate limit of device miniaturization. A comparative study of single-layer (SL) tungsten diselenide(WSe2) relative to bulk WSe2 shows substantial differences in the transient response as measured by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TRARPES). The conduction-band minimum in bulk WSe2, populated by optical pumping, decays promptly. The corresponding decay for SL WSe2 is much slower and exhibits two time constants. The results indicate the presence of two distinct decay channels in the SL that are correlated with the breaking of space inversion symmetry in the two-dimensional limit. This symmetry breaking lifts the spin degeneracy of the bands, which in turn causes the blockage of decay for one spin channel. The stark contrast between the single layer and the bulk illustrates the basic carrier scattering processes operating at different timescales that can be substantially modified by dimensional and symmetry-reduction effects.

Photo-induced Superconducting State with Long-lived Disproportionate Band Filling in FeSe

Photo-excitation is a very powerful way to instantaneously drive a material into a novel quantum state without any fabrication, and variable ultrafast techniques have been developed to observe how electron-, lattice-, and spin-degrees of freedom change. One of the most spectacular phenomena is photo-induced superconductivity, and it has been suggested in cuprates that the transition temperature Tc can be enhanced from original Tc with significant lattice modulations. Here we show another photo-induced high-Tc superconducting state in the iron-based superconductor FeSe with semi-metallic hole and electron bands. The transient electronic state in the entire Brillouin zone is directly observed by the time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using extreme ultraviolet pulses obtained from high harmonic generation. Our results of dynamical behaviors on timescales from 50 fs to 800 ps consistently support the favorable superconducting state after photo-excitation well above Tc. This finding demonstrates that multiband iron-based superconductors emerge as an alternative candidate for photo-induced superconductors.

Photo-induced semimetallic states realised in electron-hole coupled insulators

Using light to manipulate materials into desired states is one of the goals in condensed matter physics, since light control can provide ultrafast and environmentally-friendly photonics devices. However, it is generally difficult to realise a photo-induced phase which is not merely a higher entropy phase corresponding to a high-temperature phase at equilibrium. Here, we report realization of photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5 including the excitonic insulator phase using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the dynamic properties of the system, we determine that screening of excitonic correlations plays a key role in the timescale of the transition to the metallic phase, which supports the existence of an excitonic-insulator phase at equilibrium. The non-equilibrium metallic state observed unexpectedly in the direct-gap excitonic insulator opens up a new avenue to optical band engineering in electron-hole coupled systems.

Dephasing of InAs quantum dot p-shell excitons using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

The dephasing mechanisms of p-shell and s-shell excitons in an InAs self-assembled quantum dot ensemble are examined using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS). 2DCS provides a comprehensive picture of how the energy level structure of dots affects the exciton dephasing rates and recombination lifetimes. We find that at low temperatures, dephasing of s-shell excitons is lifetime limited, whereas p-shell excitons exhibit significant pure dephasing due to scattering between degenerate spin states. At elevated temperatures, quadratic exciton-phonon coupling plays an important role in both s-shell and p-shell exciton dephasing. We show that multiple p-shell states are also responsible for stronger phonon dephasing for these transitions

Antiphase Fermi-surface modulations accompanying displacement excitation in a parent compound of iron-based superconductors

We investigate the transient electronic structure of BaFe2As2, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In order to probe the entire Brillouin zone, we utilize extreme ultraviolet photons and observe photoemission intensity oscillation with the frequency of the A1g phonon which is antiphase between the zone-centered hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) and zone-cornered electron FSs. We attribute the antiphase behavior to the warping in one of the zone-centered hole FSs accompanying the displacement of the pnictogen height, and find that this displacement is the same direction as that induced by substitution of P for As, where superconductivity is induced by a structural modification without carrier doping in this system.

Ground-state properties of neutron-rich Mg isotopes

We analyze recently-measured total reaction cross sections for 24-38Mg isotopes incident on 12C targets at 240 MeV/nucleon by using the folding model and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD). The folding model well reproduces the measured reaction cross sections, when the projectile densities are evaluated by the deformed Woods-Saxon (def-WS) model with AMD deformation. Matter radii of 24-38Mg are then deduced from the measured reaction cross sections by fine-tuning the parameters of the def-WS model. The deduced matter radii are largely enhanced by nuclear deformation. Fully-microscopic AMD calculations with no free parameter well reproduce the deduced matter radii for 24-36Mg, but still considerably underestimate them for 37,38Mg. The large matter radii suggest that 37,38Mg are candidates for deformed halo nucleus. AMD also reproduces other existing measured ground-state properties (spin-parity, total binding energy, and one-neutron separation energy) of Mg isotopes. Neutron-number (N) dependence of deformation parameter is predicted by AMD. Large deformation is seen from 31Mg with N = 19 to a drip-line nucleus 40Mg with N = 28, indicating that both the N = 20 and 28 magicities disappear. N dependence of neutron skin thickness is also predicted by AMD.

Exciton Mott transition in Si Revealed by Terahertz Spectroscopy

Exciton Mott transition in Si is investigated by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The excitonic correlation as manifested by the 1s-2p resonance is observed above the Mott density. The scattering rate of charge carriers is prominently enhanced at the proximity of Mott density, which is attributed to the non-vanishing exciton correlation in the metallic electron-hole plasma. Concomitantly, the signature of plasmon-exciton coupling is observed in the loss function spectra.

Combinatorics for graded Cartan matrices of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A

A $q$-analogue of combinatorics concerning the Cartan matrix for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ is investigated. We give several descriptions for the determinant of the graded Cartan matrix, which imply some combinatorial identities. A conjectural expression for the elementary divisors is also presented.

Cooling Dynamics of Photoexcited Carriers in Si Studied by Using Optical Pump and Terahertz Probe Spectroscopy

We investigated the photoexcited carrier dynamics in Si by using optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy in an energy range between 2 meV and 25 meV. The formation dynamics of excitons from unbound e-h pairs was studied through the emergence of the 1s-2p transition of excitons at 12 meV (3 THz). We revealed the thermalization mechanism of the photo-injected hot carriers (electrons and holes) in the low temperature lattice system by taking account of the interband and intraband scattering of carriers with acoustic and optical phonons. The overall cooling rate of electrons and holes was numerically calculated on the basis of a microscopic analysis of the phonon scattering processes, and the results well account for the experimentally observed carrier cooling dynamics. The long formation time of excitons in Si after the above-gap photoexcitation is reasonably accounted for by the thermalization process of photoexcited carriers.

Cylindrical Combinatorics and Representations of Cherednik Algebras of type A

We investigate the representation theory of the rational and trigonometric Cherednik algebra of type $GL_n$ by means of combinatorics on periodic (or cylindrical) skew diagrams. We introduce and study standard tableaux and plane partitions on periodic diagrams, and in particular, compute some generating functions concerning plane partitions, where Kostka polynomials and their level restricted generalization appear. On representation side, we study representations of Cherednik algebras which admit weight decomposition with respect to a certain commutative subalgebra. All the irreducible representations of this class are constructed combinatorially through standard tableaux on periodic diagrams, and this realization as "tableaux representations" provides a new combinatorial approach to the investigation of these representations. As consequences, we describe the decomposition of a tableaux representation as a representation of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra, which is a subalgebra of the Cherednik algebra, and also describe the spectral decomposition of the spherical subspace (the invariant subspace under the action of the Weyl group) of a tableaux representation with respect to the center of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra, In particular, the computation of the character of the spherical subspace is reduced to the computation of the generating function for the set of column strict plane partitions, and we obtain an expression of the characters in terms of Kostka polynomials as announced in math.QA/0508274.

Double affine Hecke algebras, conformal coinvariants and Kostka polynomials

We study a class of representations called ``calibrated representations'' of the degenerate double affine Hecke algebra and those of the rational Cherednik algebra of type ${\mathrm{GL}}_n$. We give a realization of calibrated irreducible modules as spaces of coinvariants constructed from integrable modules over the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_m$. Moreover, we give a character formula of these irreducible modules in terms of a level-restricted Kostka polynomials. These results were conjectured by Arakawa, Suzuki and Tsuchiya based on the conformal field theory. The proofs using recent results on the representation theory of the double affine Hecke algebras will be presented in the forthcoming papers.

Tableaux on periodic skew diagrams and irreducible representations of the double affine Hecke algebra of type A

We introduce and study an affine analogue of skew Young diagrams and tableaux on them. It turns out that the double affine Hecke algebra of type $A$ acts on the space spanned by standard tableaux on each diagram. It is shown that the modules obtained this way are irreducible, and they exhaust all irreducible modules of a certain class over the double affine Hecke algebra. In particular, the classification of irreducible modules of this class, announced by Cherednik, is recovered.

Rational and trigonometric degeneration of the double affine Hecke algebra of type $A$

We study a connection between the representation theory of the rational Cherednik algebra of type $GL_n$ and the representation theory of the degenerate double affine Hecke algebra (the degenerate DAHA). We focus on an algebra embedding from the rational Cherednik algebra to the degenerate DAHA and investigate the induction functor through this embedding. We prove that this functor embeds the category ${\mathcal O}$ for the rational Cherednik algebra fully faithfully into the category ${\mathcal O}$ for the degenerate DAHA. We also study the full subcategory ${\mathcal O}^{ss}$ of ${\mathcal O}$ consisting of those modules which are semisimple with respect to the commutative subalgebra generated by Cherednik-Dunkl operators. A classification of all irreducible modules in ${\mathcal O}^{ss}$ for the rational Cherednik algebra is obtained from the corresponding result for the degenerate DAHA.

Classification of simple modules over degenerate double Affine Hecke algebras of type A

We study a class of representations over the degenerate double affine Hecke algebra of gl_n by an algebraic method. As fundamental objects in this class, we introduce certain induced modules and study some of their properties. In particular, it is shown that these induced modules have unique simple quotient modules under certain conditions. Moreover, we show that any simple module in this class is obtained as such a simple quotient, and give a classification of all the simple modules.

Rogawski's conjecture on the Jantzen filtration for the degenerate affine Hecke algebra of type A

The functors constructed by Arakawa and the author relate the representation theory of gl_n and that of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra H_l of GL_l. They transform the Verma modules over gl_n to the standard modules over H_l. They transform the simple modules to the simple modules. We also prove that they transform the Jantzen filtration on the Verma modules to that on the standard modules. We obtain the following results for the representations of H_l by translating the corresponding results for gl_n through the functors: (i) the (generalized) Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolution for a certain class of simple modules, (ii) the multiplicity formula for the composition series of the standard modules, and (iii) its refinement concerning the Jantzen filtration on the standard modules, which was conjectured by Rogawski.

Differential Equations Associated to The SU(2) WZNW Model on Elliptic Curves

We study the $SU(2)$ WZNW model over a family of elliptic curves. Starting from the formulation developed by Tsuchiya, Ueno and Yamada, we derive a system of differential equations which contains the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations. Our system completely determines the $N$-point functions and it is regarded as a natural elliptic analogue of the one developed by Tsuchiya and Kanie for the projective line. We also calculate the system for the 1-point functions explicitly. This gives a generalization of the system for $\hat\frak{sl}(2,\C)$-characters derived by Eguchi and Ooguri.
