Hessian-based Lagrangian closure theory for passive scalar turbulence

Self-consistent closure theory for passive-scalar turbulence has been developed on the basis of the Hessian of the scalar field. As a primitive indicator of spatial structure of the scalar, we employ the Hessian into the core of the theory to properly characterize the time scale intrinsic to the scalar field itself. The resultant closure model is now endowed with several realistic features, i.e. the scale-locality of the interscale interaction, the detailed conservation, and the memory-fading effect. Applying the current theory to the inertial-convective range eventually leads to self-consistent derivation of the Obukhov-Corrsin spectrum with its universal constant consistent with numerical and experimental data.

Higher-order realizable algebraic Reynolds stress modeling based on the square root tensor

In this study, realizable algebraic Reynolds stress modeling based on the square root tensor [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{92}, 053010 (2015)] is further developed for extending its applicability to more complex flows. In conventional methods, it was difficult to construct an algebraic Reynolds stress model satisfying the realizability conditions when the model involves higher-order nonlinear terms on the mean velocity gradient. Such higher-order nonlinear terms are required to predict turbulent flows with three-dimensional mean velocity. The present modeling based on the square root tensor enables us to make the model always satisfy the realizability conditions, even when it involves higher-order nonlinearity. To construct a realizable algebraic Reynolds stress model applicable to turbulent flows with three-dimensional mean velocity, a quartic-nonlinear eddy-viscosity model is proposed. The performance of the model is numerically verified in a turbulent channel flow, a homogeneous turbulent shear flow, and an axially rotating turbulent pipe flow. The present model gives a good result in each turbulent flow. Note that the mean swirl flow in an axially rotating turbulent pipe flow is reproduced because the present model involves cubic nonlinearity. Such a higher-order realizable algebraic Reynolds stress model, involving quartic nonlinearity on the mean velocity, is expected to be useful in numerically stable predictions of turbulent flows with three-dimensional mean velocity.

Constitutive theory of inhomogeneous turbulent flow based on two-scale Lagrangian formalism

A closure theory is developed for inhomogeneous turbulent flow, which enables a systematic derivation of the turbulence constitutive relations without relying on any empirical parameters. Renormalized-perturbation approximation is performed in the convective coordinate frame based on the mean flow, successfully incorporating the convective integration in generally covariant manner.

Self-consistent hyperfluid

Hyperfluid model is reconstructed on the basis of its action free from any external constraints, regarding the hyperfluid as a self-consistent classical field. Intrinsic hypermomentum is no more a given variable, but arises purely from the diffeomorphism covariance of the dynamical field, which allows the hypermomentum to be exchanged via fundamental interactions of various classes; fluid-fluid interactions, SU(n)-gauge coupling with non-minimal interaction, and coupling with the metric-affine gravity are all successfully formulated in the classical regime.

Field Theory of the Eulerian Perfect Fluid

The Eulerian perfect-fluid theory is reformulated from its action principle in a pure field-theoretic manner. Conservation of the convective current is no longer imposed by Lin's constraints, but rather adopted as the central idea of the theory. Our formulation, for the first time, successfully reduces redundant degrees of freedom promoting one half of the Clebsch variables as the true dynamical fields. Interactions on these fields allow for the exchange of the convective current of quantities such as mass and charge, which are uniformly understood as the breaking of the underlying symmetry of the force-free fluid. The Clebsch fields play the essential role in the exchange of angular momentum with the force field producing vorticity.

Mean-Lagrangian formalism and covariance of fluid turbulence

Mean-field-based Lagrangian framework is developed for the fluid turbulence theory. The space- time vector flow is naturally introduced from the mean velocity, which provides the Lagrangian picture based on the mean field in totally equivalent manner to that of the instantaneous field. The proposed framework is applied, on one hand, to one-point closure model, yielding an objective expression of the turbulence visco-elastic effect. Application to two-point closure, on the other hand, is also discussed, where natural extension of known Lagrangian correlation is discovered on the basis of extended covariance group.
