Determination of light quark masses from the electromagnetic splitting of pseudoscalar meson masses computed with two flavors of domain wall fermions

We determine the light quark masses from lattice QCD simulations incorporating the electromagnetic interaction of valence quarks. The meson masses are calculated on lattice QCD configurations generated by the RBC Collaboration for two flavors of dynamical domain wall fermions, which are combined with QED configurations generated via quenched non-compact lattice QED. The electromagnetic part of the pion mass splitting is found to be $m_{π^+}-m_{π^0}=4.12(21)$ MeV, where only the statistical error is quoted, and similarly for the kaon, 1.443(55) MeV. Our results for the light quark masses are $m_u^{\rm\bar{MS}}$(2 GeV)=$3.02(27)(19)$ MeV, $m_d^{\rm\bar{MS}}$(2 GeV)=$5.49(20)(34)$ MeV, and $m_s^{\rm\bar{MS}}$(2 GeV)=$119.5(56)(74)$ MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. By averaging over $\pm e$ to cancel ${\cal O}(e)$ noise exactly on each combined gauge field configuration, we are able to work at physical $α=1/137$ and obtain very small statistical errors. In our calculation, several sources of systematic error remain, including finite volume, non-zero lattice spacing, chiral extrapolation, quenched QED, and quenched strange quark, which may be more significant than the errors quoted above.

The isospin breaking effect on baryons with Nf=2 domain wall fermions

We study the isospin breaking effect on octet baryons. Using the two-flavor dynamical domain-wall QCD configurations combined with the quenched non-compact QED configurations, the electromagnetic mass splittings between isomultiplets (p, n), (Sigma^+, Sigma^0, Sigma^-), (Xi^0, Xi^-) are investigated. We evaluate the main source of statistical fluctuations in the two-point correlation function, and find that the elimination of O(e) fluctuation (e: the QED charge) is essential to extract the signal. Preliminary results for $m_p - m_n$ as well as other mass splittings are presented. Possible origin of systematic uncertainty is also discussed.

The static quark potential in 2+1 flavour Domain Wall QCD from QCDOC

We report our present status of on-going project on the measurement of the static quark potential in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD with various improved gauge actions and couplings. Lattice spacing determined from Sommer scale on these ensembles are from 1.6 GeV to 2.0 GeV for $16^3 \times 32$ lattice with fifth dimension size 8. We also examine size of discretization error from scaling of a pair of dimensionless quantities, $(r_0 m_π)^2$ and $r_0 m_ρ$, and found small scaling violation.

Double poles in Lattice QCD with mixed actions

We consider effects resulting from the use of different discretizations for the valence and the sea quarks, considering Wilson and/or Ginsparg--Wilson fermions. We assume that such effects appear through scaling violations that can be studied using effective-lagrangian techniques. We show that a double pole is present in flavor-neutral Goldstone meson propagators, even if the flavor non-diagonal Goldstone mesons made out of valence or sea quark have equal masses. We then consider some observables known to be anomalously sensitive to the presence of a double pole. We find that the double-pole enhanced scaling violations may turn out to be rather small in practice.

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2 from lattice QCD : Methodology

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2 is the most troublesome component of its theoretical prediction; (1) it cannot be determined from the other measurable quantities, (2) the dimensional argument and the estimation based on hadronic models imply that the magnitude of this contribution may be comparable to the discrepancy between the standard model prediction and the experimental value. The direct approach to evaluate the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution requires the evaluation of the correlation function of {\it four} hadronic electromagnetic currents, and the summation of it over two independent four-momenta of off-shell photons, which is far from the reach of direct lattice simulation. Here we propose an alternative method using combined (QCD + QED) lattice simulations to evaluate the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution.

The role of the double pole in lattice QCD with mixed actions

We investigate effects resulting from the use of different discretizations for the valence and the sea quarks in lattice QCD, considering Wilson and/or Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. We assume that such effects appear through scaling violations that can be studied using effective lagrangian techniques. We show that a double pole is present in flavor-neutral Goldstone meson propagators, even if the charged Goldstone mesons made out of valence quarks and those made out of sea quarks have equal masses. We then consider some observables known to be anomalously sensitive to the presence of a double pole. For these observables, we find that the double-pole enhanced scaling violations may turn out to be rather small in practice.

Hadron Spectrum and Decay Constant from $N_F=2$ Domain Wall QCD

We report on the first large-scale study of two flavor QCD with domain wall fermions (DWF). Simulation has been carried out at three dynamical quark mass values about 1/2, 3/4, and 1 $m_{strange}$ on $16^3\times 32$ volume with $L_s=12$ and $a^{-1}\approx 1.7$ GeV. After discussing the details of the simulation, we report on the light hadron spectrum and decay constants.

Static $\bar{Q}$-$Q$ Potential from $N_f=2$ Dynamical Domain-Wall QCD

We calculate the static quark and anti-quark potential both in quenched and two-flavor dynamical quark lattice QCD using DBW2 gauge and domain-wall quark actions. Lattice spacings from Sommer scale are determined. We find (i) mixing of excited states is different in between quenched and dynamical, (ii) lattice spacing $a_{r_0}\sim a_{m_ρ}$ in dynamical and (iii) coefficient of Coulomb term being $α_{N_f=0}<α_{N_f=2}$ at $a^{-1}\sim$ 2 GeV.

B_K from Two-flavor Dynamical Domain Wall Fermions

We report preliminary results from an ongoing calculation of $B_K$ for $N_f=2$ dynamical QCD with domain wall fermions. Simulations have been done with three dynamical quark masses on $16^3 \times 32$ volumes with $L_s = 12$, where the lattice spacing is $a^{-1} = 1.81(6)$ GeV. Using measurements on $\sim 70$ lattices for each dynamical mass and extrapolating $\mdyn=\mval$ to the kaon point, we find $B_K^{\rm \bar{MS}}(μ=2{\rm GeV}) = 0.503(20)$.

Lattice QCD with dynamical domain wall quarks

We study lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical domain wall quarks. With renormalization group motivated actions, we find chiral symmetry can be preserved to a high degree at lattice cut off of a^{-1} \sim 2 GeV even for fifth dimension size as small as L_s = 12. In addition two new steps are introduced to improve the performance of the hybrid Monte Carlo simulation.

Perturbative renormalization factors in domain-wall QCD with improved gauge actions

We evaluate renormalization factors of the domain-wall fermion system with various improved gauge actions at one loop level. The renormalization factors are calculated for quark wave function, quark mass, bilinear quark operators, three- and four-quark operators in modified minimal subtraction (MS-bar) scheme with the dimensional reduction(DRED) as well as the naive dimensional regularization(NDR). We also present detailed results in the mean field improved perturbation theory.

Domain Wall Fermions in Quenched Lattice QCD

We study the chiral properties and the validity of perturbation theory for domain wall fermions in quenched lattice QCD at beta=6.0. The explicit chiral symmetry breaking term in the axial Ward-Takahashi identity is found to be very small already at Ns=10, where Ns is the size of the fifth dimension, and its behavior seems consistent with an exponential decay in Ns within the limited range of Ns we explore. From the fact that the critical quark mass, at which the pion mass vanishes as in the case of the ordinary Wilson-type fermion, exists at finite Ns, we point out that this may be a signal of the parity broken phase and investigate the possible existence of such a phase in this model at finite Ns. The rho and pi meson decay constants obtained from the four-dimensional local currents with the one-loop renormalization factor show a good agreement with those obtained from the conserved currents.

Lattice Gross-Neveu model with domain-wall fermions

We investigate the two-dimensional lattice Gross-Neveu model, using the domain-wall fermion formulation, as a toy model of lattice QCD. We study features of the phase diagram related to the mechanism of chiral symmetry restoration, and find that the parity-broken phase (Aoki phase) exists for finite extent in the extra dimension ($N_s$). We also find that O(a) scaling violation terms vanishes in the limit of $N_s\to\infty$.

Perturbative renormalization factors of quark operators for domain-wall QCD

We calculate one-loop renormalization factors of several quark operators including bilinear, three- and four-quark operator for domain-wall fermion action. Since Green functions are constructed for external physical quark fields, our renormalization method is simple and can be easily applied to calculation of any quark operators. Our results show that these renormalized quark operators preserve several chiral properties of continuum massless QCD, which can be understood by the property of external quark line propagator.

Two dimensional lattice Gross--Neveu model with domain-wall fermions

We investigate the two dimensional lattice Gross--Neveu model in large flavor number limit using the domain-wall fermion formulation, as a toy model of lattice QCD. We study nonperturbative behaviorn of the restoration of chiral symmetry of the domain-wall fermions as the extent of the extra dimension $(N_s)$ is increased to infinity. We find the the parity broken phase (Aoki phase) for finite $N_s$, and study the phase diagram, which is related to the mechanism of the chiral restoration in $N_s\to\infty$ limit. The continuum limit is taken and $O(a)$ scaling violation of observables vanishes in $N_s\to\infty$ limit. We also examine the systematic dependencies of observables to the parameters.

Translational Anomaly in Chiral Gauge Theories on a Torus and the Overlap Formalism

We point out that a fermion determinant of a chiral gauge theory on a 2D torus has a phase ambiguity proportional to the Polyakov loops along the boundaries, which can be reproduced by the overlap formalism. We show that the requirement on the fermion determinant that a singularity in the gauge field can be absorbed by a change of the boundary condition for the fermions, is not compatible with translational invariance in general. As a consequence, the gauge anomaly for singular gauge transformations discovered by Narayanan-Neuberger actually exists in any 2D U(1) chiral gauge theory unless the theory is vector-like. We argue that the gauge anomaly is peculiar to the overlap formalism with the Wigner-Brillouin phase choice and that it is not necessarily a property required in the continuum. We also generalize our results to any even dimension.

Perturbative renormalization factors of three- and four-quark operators for domain-wall QCD

Renormalization factors for three- and four-quark operators, which appear in the low energy effective Lagrangian of the proton decay and the weak interactions, are perturbatively calculated in domain-wall QCD. We find that the operators are multiplicatively renormalizable up to one-loop level without mixing with any other operators that have different chiral structures. As an application, we evaluate a renormalization factor for $B_K$ at the parameters where previous simulations have been performed, and find one-loop corrections to $B_K$ are 1-5% in these cases.
