Multipolar Phase Transition in the 4$f^2$ fcc lattice compound PrCdNi$_{4}$

Transport and magnetic properties of a 4$f^{2}$ fcc lattice compound, PrCdNi$_4$, were studied. The magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, follows the Curie--Weiss law from 300 K to 20 K, as expected for a free Pr$^{3+}$ ion. As the temperature decreases below 5 K, $χ(T)$ approaches a constant, indicating van-Vleck paramagnetic behavior. The specific heat, $C(T)$, displays a broad shoulder at around 4 K, which can be reproduced by a doublet triplet two-level model with an energy gap of 12 K. These results suggest a non-magnetic $Γ_3$ doublet ground state of the Pr$^{3+}$ ion in the cubic crystalline electric field. $C(T)$ exhibits a peak at $T_{\rm O}$ = 1.0 K and this peak remains robust against magnetic fields up to 5 T. In powder neutron diffraction measurements, no magnetic reflection was observed at 0.32 K $<$ $T_{\rm O}$. Two anomalies at $B$ = 2.1 and 5.3 T in magnetoresistance $ρ(B)$ at 0.05 K likely originate from switching in the order parameter. These results suggest that the phase transition at $T_{\rm O}$ is ascribed to an antiferro-type order of the electric quadrupole or magnetic octupole of the $Γ_3$ doublet in the 4$f^2$ fcc lattice.

Zero-point entropies of spin-jam and spin-glass states in a frustrated magnet

Thermodynamics studies of a prototypical quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet Ba$_2$Sn$_2$ZnCr$_{7p}$Ga$_{10-7p}$O$_{22}$ where the magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions are arranged in a triangular network of bipyramids show that the magnetic zero-point entropy for $p=0.98$ is 55(1)\% of the entropy expected when the Cr$^{3+}$ moments are fully disordered. Furthermore, when combined with a previous neutron scattering study and the perimeter scaling entropy of a spin jam, the analysis reveals that with decreasing $p$, i.e., doping of the nonmagnetic Ga$^{3+}$ ions, the variation in the magnetic zero-point entropy can be well explained by the combined effects of the zero-point entropy of the spin jam state and that of weakly coupled orphan spins, shedding light on the coexistence of the two types of spin states in quantum magnetism.

Unraveling the magnetic structure of YbNiSn single crystal via crystal growth and neutron diffraction

Neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments were performed on the ternary intermetallic compound YbNiSn, formerly categorized as a ferromagnetic Kondo compound. At zero field, an increase in scattering intensity was observed on top of allowed and forbidden nuclear reflections below Tc, breaking the reflection condition of the crystal symmetry Pnma. This indicates that the magnetic structure of YbNiSn is antiferromagnetic-type, rather than the previously proposed simple collinear ferromagnetic structure. Temperature dependence of the scattering intensity of the 011 reflection confirmed the magnetic ordering at 5.77(2) K. No incommensurate satellite reflection was observed at 2.5 K. By applying external magnetic field of 1 T along the a axis, the magnetic intensity at the nuclear-forbidden 001 position was suppressed, while a slight enhancement at the nuclear-allowed 002 position was observed. This suggests a spin-flip transition under the external magnetic field along the a axis in YbNiSn. The proposed magnetic structures at zero field and 1 T correspond to the magnetic space groups of Pn'm'a and Pnm'a', respectively. The piezomagnetic effect and the switch between the two magnetic space groups by the external stress, which could be detected by the anomalous Hall effect, are proposed.

Higher-order modulations in the skyrmion-lattice phase of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

Using small angle neutron scattering, we have investigated higher-order peaks in the skyrmion-lattice phase of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, in which two different skyrmion lattices, SkX1 and SkX2, are known to form. For each skyrmion-lattice phase, we observed two sets of symmetrically inequivalent peaks at the higher-order-reflection positions with the indices $(110)$ and $(200)$. Under the condition where the SkX1 and SkX2 coexist, we confirmed the absence of the scattering at $\mathbf{Q}$ positions combining reflections from the two phases, indicating a significantly weak double-scattering component. Detailed analysis of the peak profile, as well as the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the peak intensity, also supports the intrinsic higher-order modulation rather than the parasitic double scattering. The two higher-order modulations show contrasting magnetic-field dependence; the former $(110)$ increases as the field is increased, whereas the latter $(200)$ decreases. This indicates that, in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, skyrmions are weakly distorted, and the distortion is field-dependent in a way that the dominant higher-order modulation switches from $(110)$ to $(200)$ under field. Monte Carlo simulations under sweeping external magnetic field qualitatively reproduce the observed magnetic-field dependence, and suggests that the higher-order modulations correspond to the superlattices of weak swirlings appearing in the middle of the original triangular-latticed skyrmions.

Structural and magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$

Magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$ were investigated by the magnetization and the neutron diffraction experiments. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curve indicate dominant ferromagnetic interactions, while the whirling antiferromagnetic order was found from the neutron diffraction experiments. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetic moments are aligned almost perpendicular to a pseudo five-fold symmetry axis, which should correspond to the easy-axis direction of a Tb atom. The magnetic properties similar to those of Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$ in spite of the difference in the electron-per-atom ratio suggest the robustness of the easy-axis anisotropy against the chemical substitution of the nonmagnetic atoms.

Strongly electron-correlated semimetal RuI$_3$ with a layered honeycomb structure

A polymorph of RuI$_3$ synthesized under high pressure was found to have a two-layered honeycomb structure. The resistivity of RuI$_3$ exhibits a semimetallic behavior, in contrast to insulating properties in $α$-RuCl$_3$. In addition, Pauli paramagnetic behavior was observed in the temperature dependence of a magnetic susceptibility and a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$. The band structure calculations indicate that contribution of the I 5$p$ components to the low-energy $t_\mathrm{2g}$ bands effectively decreases Coulomb repulsion, leading to semimetallic properties. The physical properties also suggest strong electron correlations in RuI$_3$.

Antiferromagnetic order of ferromagnetically coupled dimers in the double pyrovanadate CaCoV$_2$O$_7$

Magnetic properties of the pyrovanadate CaCoV$_2$O$_7$ have been studied by means of the bulk magnetization and neutron powder diffraction measurements. Magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase shows Curie-Weiss behavior with negative Weiss temperature $Θ\simeq -22.5$ K, indicating dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. At $T_{\rm N} = 3.44$ K, CaCoV$_2$O$_7$ shows antiferromagnetic order, accompanied by a weak net ferromagnetic moment of $\sim 0.05$~$μ_{\rm B}/{\rm Co}^{2+}$. Neutron powder diffraction confirms the formation of antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}$. It was further confirmed from the magnetic structure determination that the two Co$^{2+}$ ions in the adjacent edge-sharing octahedra have almost parallel (ferromagnetic) spin arrangement, indicative of a formation of a ferromagnetic spin dimer. The antiferromagnetic order is, in turn, stabilized by sizable inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interactions.

Noncoplanar ferrimagnetism and local crystalline-electric-field anisotropy in the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{70}$Si$_{17}$Tb$_{13}$

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{70}$Si$_{17}$Tb$_{13}$, consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at $T_{\rm C} = 11.6 \pm 1$ K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be nearly tangential to the icosahedral cluster surface in the local mirror plane, which is quite similar to that recently found in the antiferromagnetic quasicrystal approximant Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$. Inelastic neutron scattering on the powdered sample exhibits a very broad peak centered at $\hbar ω\simeq 4$ meV. The observed inelastic spectrum was explained by the crystalline-electric-field model taking account of the chemical disorder at the fractional Au/Si sites. The resulting averaged anisotropy axis for the crystalline-electric-field ground state is consistent with the ordered moment direction determined in the magnetic structure analysis, confirming that the non-coplanar magnetic order is stabilized by the local uniaxial anisotropy.

Effect of Ge-substitution on Magnetic Properties in the Itinerant Chiral Magnet MnSi

We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $M_\mathrm{s}$ and the critical field to the fully polarized state $H_\mathrm{c2}$. In contrast to the saturation behavior of $T_\mathrm{c}$, those parameters increase linearly up to the highest Ge concentration investigated. In the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, we found enlargement of the skyrmion phase region for large $x$ samples. We, furthermore, observed the non-linear behavior of helical modulation vector $k$ as a function of Ge concentration, which can be described qualitatively using the mean field approximation.

Whirling spin order in the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$

Neutron powder diffraction experiment has been performed on the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$, a body-center-cubic crystal of icosahedral spin clusters. The long-range antiferromagnetic order was confirmed at the transition temperature $T_{\rm N} = 10.4$ K. The magnetic structure consists of noncoplanar whirling spins on the icosahedral clusters, arranging antiferroic-manner. A simple icosahedral spin-cluster model with uniaxial anisotropy accounts well the whirling spin order as well as the in-field metamagnetic transition, indicating that the icosahedral symmetry is essential.

Triplon band splitting and topologically protected edge states in the dimerized antiferromagnet

The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, through inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands and a clear band gap between them due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interactions along the $a$-direction, which is consistent with the crystal structure. The presence of topologically protected edge states is indicated by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

Tiny adiabatic-demagnetization refrigerator for a commercial superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer

A tiny adiabatic-demagnetization refrigerator (T-ADR) has been developed for a commercial superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer [Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS) from Quantum Design]. The whole T-ADR system is fit in a cylindrical space of the diameter $8.5$ mm and the length $250$ mm, and can be inserted into the narrow sample tube of MPMS. A sorption pump is self-contained in T-ADR, and hence no complex gas handling system is necessary. With the single crystalline Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ garnet ($\sim 2$ grams) used as a magnetic refrigerant, the routinely achievable lowest temperature is $\sim 0.56$ K. The lower detection limit for a magnetization anomaly is $\sim 1 \times 10^{-7}$ emu, estimated from fluctuation of the measured magnetization. The background level is $\sim 5 \times 10^{-5}$ emu below 2 K at $H = 100$ Oe, which is largely attributable to a contaminating paramagnetic signal from the magnetic refrigerant.

Magnon dispersion shift in the induced-ferromagnetic phase of the noncentrosymmetric MnSi

Small angle neutron inelastic scattering measurement has been performed to study the magnon dispersion relation in the field-induced-ferromagnetic phase of the noncentrosymmetric binary compound MnSi. For the magnons propagating parallel or anti-parallel to the external magnetic field, we experimentally confirmed that the dispersion relation is asymmetrically shifted along the magnetic field direction. This magnon dispersion shift is attributed to the relativistic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is finite in noncentrosymmetric magnets, such as MnSi. The shift direction is found to be switchable by reversing the external magnetic field direction.

Incommensurate Magnetic Structure in the Cubic Noncentrosymmetric Ternary Compound Pr5Ru3Al2

We performed magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction experiments on the ternary compound Pr5Ru3Al2. It belongs to the noncentrosymmetric and nonmirrorsymmetric cubic I213 space group. The previously reported ferromagnetic transition at 24 K was not detected in our improved quality samples. Instead, magnetic ordering was observed in the DC magnetic susceptibility at 3.8 K. Neutron powder diffraction further indicates that an incommensurate magnetic structure is established below 3.8 K, with the magnetic modulation vector (0.066, 0.066, 0.066) (r.l.u.). Using the magnetic representation analysis, we propose the block helical structure as a candidate for the incommensurate magnetic structure.

Novel Magnetic Chiral Structures and Unusual Temperature Hysteresis in the Metallic Helimagnet MnP

We have reinvestigated the magnetic properties of the classical metallic helimagnet MnP by magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. Our neutron scattering results indicate that the previously reported magnetic structure in the low-temperature (LT) helimagnetic phase (T < 47K) should be modified to an alternately tilted helimagnetic structure pro- duced by the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. In the intermediate temperature (IT) range between the LT helimagnetic phase and the high-temperature (HT) ferromagnetic phase along the c-axis, 47K < T < 282K, we have found a weak ferromagnetic behavior along the b-axis. Surprisingly, the IT weak ferromagnetic phase has two different states, namely, the large magnetization (LM) and small magnetization (SM) states. The SM state emerges with cooling from the paramagnetic phase above 292 K via the HT ferromagnetic phase and LM state emerges with warming from the LT helimagnetic phase. The weak ferromagnetism along the b-axis and the unusual temperature hysteresis in the IT phase can be understood by assuming a spontaneous formation of the stripe structure consisting of alternately arranged HT ferromagnetic and LT helimagnetic domains.

Block magnetism coupled with local distortion in the iron-based spin-ladder compound BaFe2Se3

Magnetism in the insulating BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ was examined through susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. After formation of a short-range magnetic correlation, a long-range ordering was observed below $T_{\rm N}\sim 255$ K. The transition is obscured by bulk properties. Magnetic moments ($\parallel a$) are arranged to form a Fe$_4$ ferromagnetic unit, and each Fe$_4$ stacks antiferromagnetically. This block magnetism is of the third type among magnetic structures of ferrous materials. The magnetic ordering drives unusually large distortion via magnetoelastic coupling.

Ferro-quadrupolar ordering in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$

Origin of the non-magnetic phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$, reported earlier in the macroscopic study, has been asserted microscopically using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. It has been shown spectroscopically that the crystalline-electric-field ground state is a non-magnetic $Γ_3$ doublet, whereas the excited states are two triplets ($Γ_4$ and $Γ_5$) and a singlet ($Γ_1$). The diffraction experiment under external magnetic field shows that the non-magnetic transition is indeed ferro-quadrupolar ordering, which takes place as a consequence of cooperative removal of the ground-state-doublet degeneracy. It is therefore concluded that PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ is another rare example of Pr compounds exhibiting non-magnetic quadrupolar order.

Magnetic properties of the Ag-In-rare-earth 1/1 approximants

We have performed magnetic susceptibility and neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ag-In-RE (RE: rare-earth) 1/1 approximants. In the magnetic susceptibility measurements, for most of the RE elements, inverse susceptibility shows linear behaviour in a wide temperature range, confirming well localized isotropic moments for the RE$^{3+}$ ions. Exceptionally for the light RE elements, such as Ce and Pr, non-linear behaviour was observed, possibly due to significant crystalline field splitting or valence fluctuation. For RE = Tb, the susceptibility measurement clearly shows a bifurcation of the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibility at $T_{\rm f} = 3.7$~K, suggesting a spin-glass-like freezing. On the other hand, neutron scattering measurements detect significant development of short-range antiferromagnetic spin correlations in elastic channel, which accompanied by a broad peak at $\hbarω= 4$~meV in inelastic scattering spectrum. These features have striking similarity to those in the Zn-Mg-Tb quasicrystals, suggesting that the short-range spin freezing behaviour is due to local high symmetry clusters commonly seen in both the systems.
