Room-temperature magnon-phonon transduction in high-damping Co/Pt structures

Quantum communication and information processing strongly benefit from the coupling between different quasi-particles, offering complementary advantages. Magnetoelastic materials inherently allow for direct coupling between magnetization dynamics and quantized lattice vibrations, called phonons. Near the ferromagnetic resonances, phonons may thus trade energy and angular momentum with uniformly precessing magnetization, called magnons, and enable transduction of information from magnetic to phononic modes, thereby paving the way for long-range transport of magnetic information without the need of magnetic material. Here, we employ tailored magnetic-nonmagnetic heterostructures, which simultaneously act as cavities for standing shear waves, to bring selective phonons and magnons into resonance. These Co films with Pt seed layers show extended linewidth and reduced amplitude of the phonon-resonant FMR lines, providing a hallmark of energy and angular momentum exchange. Complementarily, by theoretical modeling and ultra-fast coherent phonon spectroscopy, we identify the responsible transverse acoustic phonons as standing shear waves in the combined Co and Pt structure. We find a high crystal quality in conjunction with a large magnetoelastic coupling constant as a prerequisite for efficient magnon-phonon coupling of this type. Such resonant enhancement of magnon-phonon coupling in CMOS-compatible material provides an ideal material platform for future quantum transducers.

A Combined Theoretical and Experimental Study of Oxygen Vacancies in Co$_3$O$_4$ for Liquid-Phase Oxidation Catalysis

In the present work, we investigate oxygen vacancies (V$_\mathrm{O}$) in Co$_3$O$_4$, both in the bulk phase and under liquid-phase ethylene glycol oxidation, by combining theoretical and experimental techniques. Density functional theory calculations for bulk Co$_3$O$_4$ show that introducing an oxygen vacancy reduces two adjacent Co$^{3+}$ ions to Co$^{2+}$ and narrows the band gap. The newly formed Co$^{2+}$ ions adopt high-spin configurations in distorted octahedral sites and remain stable in this state in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at $300$ K. Computed O and Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectra for ideal and vacancy-containing Co$_3$O$_4$ show excellent agreement with the experimental data and serve as references to analyze the liquid-phase ethylene glycol oxidation. The comparison with experimental O K-edge spectra of fresh and post-reaction catalysts shows that fresh samples resemble the vacancy-containing reference, whereas post-reaction spectra shift toward the ideal reference. These results suggest that under liquid-phase ethylene glycol oxidation conditions, Co$_3$O$_4$ becomes more oxidized rather than reduced, by refilling preexisting oxygen vacancies. This is further supported by the observation that higher O$_2$ pressures increase the conversion and that the catalyst remains stable and active over several cycles.

Pragmatic Theories Enhance Understanding of Implied Meanings in LLMs

The ability to accurately interpret implied meanings plays a crucial role in human communication and language use, and language models are also expected to possess this capability. This study demonstrates that providing language models with pragmatic theories as prompts is an effective in-context learning approach for tasks to understand implied meanings. Specifically, we propose an approach in which an overview of pragmatic theories, such as Gricean pragmatics and Relevance Theory, is presented as a prompt to the language model, guiding it through a step-by-step reasoning process to derive a final interpretation. Experimental results showed that, compared to the baseline, which prompts intermediate reasoning without presenting pragmatic theories (0-shot Chain-of-Thought), our methods enabled language models to achieve up to 9.6\% higher scores on pragmatic reasoning tasks. Furthermore, we show that even without explaining the details of pragmatic theories, merely mentioning their names in the prompt leads to a certain performance improvement (around 1-3%) in larger models compared to the baseline.

Conformally Schwarzschild cosmological black holes

We thoroughly investigate conformally Schwarzschild spacetimes in different coordinate systems to seek for physically reasonable models of a cosmological black hole. We assume that a conformal factor depends only on the time coordinate and that the spacetime is asymptotically flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe filled by a perfect fluid obeying a linear equation state $p=wρ$ with $w>-1/3$. In this class of spacetimes, the McClure-Dyer spacetime, constructed in terms of the isotropic coordinates, and the Thakurta spacetime, constructed in terms of the standard Schwarzschild coordinates, are identical and do not describe a cosmological black hole. In contrast, the Sultana-Dyer and Culetu classes of spacetimes, constructed in terms of the Kerr-Schild and Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates, respectively, describe a cosmological black hole. In the Sultana-Dyer case, the corresponding matter field in general relativity can be interpreted as a combination of a homogeneous perfect fluid and an inhomogeneous null fluid, which is valid everywhere in the spacetime unlike Sultana and Dyer's interpretation. In the Culetu case, the matter field can be interpreted as a combination of a homogeneous perfect fluid and an inhomogeneous anisotropic fluid. However, in both cases, the total energy-momentum tensor violates all the standard energy conditions at a finite value of the radial coordinate in late times. As a consequence, the Sultana-Dyer and Culetu black holes for $-1/3<w\le 1$ cannot describe the evolution of a primordial black hole after its horizon entry.

Thakurta metric does not describe a cosmological black hole

Recently, the Thakurta metric has been adopted as a model of primordial black holes. We show that the spacetime described by this metric has neither black-hole event horizon nor black-hole trapping horizon and involves the violation of all the standard energy conditions as a solution of the Einstein equation. Therefore, this metric does not describe a cosmological black hole in the early universe. It is pointed out that a contradictory claim by the other group stems from an incorrect choice of sign.

Complete classification of Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solutions with linear equation of state: parallelly propagated curvature singularities for general geodesics

We completely classify the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solutions with spatial curvature $K=0,\pm 1$ for perfect fluids with linear equation of state $p=wρ$, where $ρ$ and $p$ are the energy density and pressure, without assuming any energy conditions. We extend our previous work to include all geodesics and parallelly propagated curvature singularities, showing that no non-null geodesic emanates from or terminates at the null portion of conformal infinity and that the initial singularity for $K=0,-1$ and $-5/3<w<-1$ is a null non-scalar polynomial curvature singularity. We thus obtain the Penrose diagrams for all possible cases and identify $w=-5/3$ as a critical value for both the future big-rip singularity and the past null conformal boundary.

Magnetization dynamics affected by phonon pumping

"Pumping" of phonons by a dynamic magnetization promises to extend the range and functionality of magnonic devices. We explore the impact of phonon pumping on room-temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of bilayers of thin yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films on thick gadolinium gallium garnet substrates over a wide frequency range. At low frequencies the Kittel mode hybridizes coherently with standing ultrasound waves of a bulk acoustic resonator to form magnon polarons that induce rapid oscillations of the magnetic susceptibility, as reported before. At higher frequencies, the phonon resonances overlap, merging into a conventional FMR line, but with an increased line width. The frequency dependence of the increased line broadening follows the predictions from phonon pumping theory in the thick substrate limit. In addition, we find substantial magnon-phonon coupling of a perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode. This evidences the importance of the mode overlap between the acoustic and magnetic modes, and provides a route towards engineering the magnetoelastic mode coupling.

Dynamic Magnetoelastic Boundary Conditions and the Pumping of Phonons

We derive boundary conditions at the interfaces of magnetoelastic heterostructures under ferromagnetic resonance for arbitrary magnetization directions and interface shapes. We apply our formalism to magnet$\vert$nonmagnet bilayers and magnetic grains embedded in a nonmagnetic thin film, revealing a nontrivial magnetization angle dependence of acoustic phonon pumping.
