ChartPointFlow for Topology-Aware 3D Point Cloud Generation

A point cloud serves as a representation of the surface of a three-dimensional (3D) shape. Deep generative models have been adapted to model their variations typically using a map from a ball-like set of latent variables. However, previous approaches did not pay much attention to the topological structure of a point cloud, despite that a continuous map cannot express the varying numbers of holes and intersections. Moreover, a point cloud is often composed of multiple subparts, and it is also difficult to express. In this study, we propose ChartPointFlow, a flow-based generative model with multiple latent labels for 3D point clouds. Each label is assigned to points in an unsupervised manner. Then, a map conditioned on a label is assigned to a continuous subset of a point cloud, similar to a chart of a manifold. This enables our proposed model to preserve the topological structure with clear boundaries, whereas previous approaches tend to generate blurry point clouds and fail to generate holes. The experimental results demonstrate that ChartPointFlow achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of generation and reconstruction compared with other point cloud generators. Moreover, ChartPointFlow divides an object into semantic subparts using charts, and it demonstrates superior performance in case of unsupervised segmentation.

Strong-Coupling Superconductivity in BaPd2As2 Induced by Soft Phonons in the ThCr2Si2-type Polymorph

The specific heat of two polymorphs of BaPd2As2 was measured. The ThCr2Si2-type polymorph (space group I4/mmm, $D_{4h}^{17}$, No. 139) is a previously reported superconductor with a transition temperature Tc $\simeq$ 3.5 K, while the CeMg2Si2-type polymorph (P4/mmm, $D_{4h}^{1}$, No. 123) is a normal metal and does not exhibit superconductivity down to 1.8 K. Our results revealed that the ThCr2Si2-type has an anomalously low Debye temperature, indicative of soft phonons, compared to the CeMg2Si2-type. Moreover, a large specific-heat jump at Tc indicated that the superconductivity of ThCr2Si2-type is a strong-coupling type, which is likely derived from soft phonons.

Site-Selective Antimony Doping in Arsenic Zigzag Chains of 112-type Ca1-xLaxFeAs2

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were performed for the Sb-doped 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 with the superconducting transition temperature Tc of 47 K. Doped Sb preferably substituted not for As(1) in the FeAs layers but for As(2) in the layers of As zigzag chains. Structural reasons for Tc enhancement by Sb doping were discussed.

Suppression of Nonmagnetic Insulating State by Application of Pressure in Mineral Tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$

The mineral tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ exhibits a first-order metal--insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 85 K and ambient pressure. We measured the $^{63}$Cu-NMR at ambient pressure and the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at high pressures. $^{63}$Cu-NMR results indicate a nonmagnetic insulating ground state in this compound. The MIT is monotonically suppressed by pressure and disappears at $\sim1.0$ GPa. Two other anomalies are observed in the resistivity measurements, and the pressure -- temperature phase diagram of Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ is constructed.
