An odd-frequency Cooper pair around a magnetic impurity

The Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) state appears as a bound state of a quasiparticle at a magnetic atom embedded in a superconductor. We discuss why the YSR state has energy below the superconducting gap and why the pair potential changes the sign at the magnetic atom. Although a magnetic atom in a superconductor has been considered as a pair breaker since 1960s, we propose an alternative physical picture to explain these reasons. We show that a magnetic atom converts a spin-singlet s-wave Cooper pair into an odd-frequency pair rather than breaking it. The odd-frequency pairing correlations always coexist with the quasiparticle states below the gap. The YSR state is an example of such a subgap quasiparticle state. The paramagnetic property of an odd-frequency pair explains the sign change of the pair potential at a magnetic atom and the decrease of superconducting transition temperature in the presence of many magnetic impurities.

Birefringent atomic vapor laser lock in a hollow cathode lamp

We report a robust method of stabilizing a laser to the frequency of an atomic transition using a hollow cathode lamp. In contrast to the standard dichroic atomic vapor laser lock (DAVLL) method, which uses dichroism induced by a longitudinal magnetic field, we employ birefringence induced by a transversal magnetic field. We applied this method to the $(5s^2)\ {}^{1}S_{0} - (5s5p)\ {}^{1}P_{1}$ transition (461 nm) of Sr. Although the hollow cathode is made of ferromagnetic material, we successfully applied a magnetic field of sufficient strength to obtain an error signal with a theoretical maximum slope. This method may be applied to other hollow cathode lamps of different atomic species.

Modulation of Dirac electrons in epitaxial Bi2Se3 ultrathin films on van-der-Waals ferromagnet Cr2Si2Te6

We investigated the Dirac-cone state and its modulation when an ultrathin film of topological insulator Bi2Se3 was epitaxially grown on a van-der-Waals ferromagnet Cr2Si2Te6 (CST) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a gapless Dirac-cone surface state in 6 quintuple-layer (QL) Bi2Se3 on CST, whereas the Dirac cone exhibits a gap of 0.37 eV in 2QL counterpart. Intriguingly, this gap is much larger than those for Bi2Se3 films on Si(111). We also revealed no discernible change in the gap magnitude across the ferromagnetic transition of CST, suggesting the very small characteristic length and energy scale of the magnetic proximity effect. The present results suggest a crucial role of interfacial coupling for modulating Dirac electrons in topological-insulator hybrids.

Superconductivity in Cu-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with potential disorder

We study the effects of random nonmagnetic impurities on superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in a Cu-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$, for which four types of pair potentials have been proposed. Although all the candidates belong to $s$-wave symmetry, two orbital degree of freedom in electronic structures enriches the symmetry variety of a Cooper pair such as even-orbital-parity and odd-orbital-parity. We consider realistic electronic structures of Cu-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by using tight-binding Hamiltonian on a hexagonal lattice and consider effects of impurity scatterings through the self-energy of the Green's function within the Born approximation. We find that even-orbital-parity spin-singlet superconductivity is basically robust even in the presence of impurities. The degree of the robustness depends on the electronic structures in the normal state and on the pairing symmetry in orbital space. On the other hand, two odd-orbital-parity spin-triplet order parameters are always fragile in the presence of potential disorder.

Spectroscopic study of a diffusion-bonded sapphire cell for hot metal vapors

Characteristics of a diffusion-bonded sapphire cell for optical experiments with hot metal vapors were investigated. The sapphire cell consisted of sapphire-crystal plates and a borosilicate-glass tube, which were bonded to each other by diffusion bonding without any binders or glues. The glass tube was attached to a vacuum manifold using the standard method applied in glass processing, filled with a small amount of Rb metal by chasing with a torch, and then sealed. The cell was baked at high temperatures and optical experiments were then performed using rubidium atoms at room temperature. The sapphire cell was found to be vacuum tight, at least up to 350$^{\circ}$C, and the sapphire walls remained clear over all temperatures. From the optical experiments, the generation of a background gas was indicated after baking at 200$^{\circ}$C. The background gas pressure was low enough to avoid pressure broadening of absorption lines but high enough to cause velocity-changing collisions of Rb atoms. The generated gas pressure decreased at higher temperatures, probably due to chemical reactions.

Doppler-free spectroscopy of metastable Sr atoms using a hollow cathode lamp

We report on the demonstration of Doppler-free spectroscopy of metastable Sr atoms using a hollow cathode lamp (HCL). We employed a custom Sr HCL which is filled with a mixture of 0.5-Torr Ne and 0.5-Torr Xe as a buffer gas to suppress velocity changing collisions and increase the populations in all the $(5s5p){}^3P_J(J=0,\ 1,\ 2)$ metastable states. We performed frequency-modulation spectroscopy for the $(5s5p){}^3P_0-(5s6s){}^3S_1$, $(5s5p){}^3P_1-(5s6s){}^3S_1$, $(5s5p){}^3P_2-(5s5d){}^3D_2$, and $(5s5p){}^3P_2-(5s5d){}^3D_3$ transitions with sufficient signal to noise ratios for laser frequency stabilization. We also observed the hyperfine transitions of $(5s5p){}^3P_2-(5s5d){}^3D_3$ of $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ . This method would greatly facilitate laser cooling of Sr.
