PIC simulations of laser-induced proton acceleration by resonant nanoantennas for fusion

Rapid recent development in laser technology and methods learned from relativistic heavy ion physics led to new possibilities for fusion. Using a Hydrogen rich UDMA-TEGDMA polymer fusion target, laser irradiation ionizes the target. If we implant nanoantennas into the target resonating to the laser light frequency massive number of electrons of the ionized plasma resonate within the nanoantenna forming a so called nanoplasmonic wave. Our kinetic model simulation with a Hydrogen target indicates that the field of these resonating electrons attracts and accelerates the surrounding protons of the plasma to multi-MeV energy. These protons are then energetic enough to achieve nuclear transmutation and fusion reactions. Without resonating nanoantenna there is no such collective proton acceleration, no energetic protons, and nuclear reactions at 30 mJ laser pulse energy.

Raman spectroscopic characterization of crater walls formed upon single-shot high energy femtosecond laser irradiation of dimethacrylate polymer doped with plasmonic gold nanorods

The bonding configuration of the crater walls formed in urethane dimethacrylate-based polymer doped with plasmonic gold nanorods upon irradiation with a single-shot high-energy femtosecond laser pulse has been studied by Raman spectroscopy. New Raman bands were detected in the 2000-2500 cm-1 region of the Raman spectrum the intensities of which showed strong dependence on the concentration of the plasmonic nanoparticles and the energy of the laser pulse. Based on model calculations of the Raman frequencies of the polymer these peaks were attributed to carbon-deuterium and nitrogen-deuterium vibrations. Their appearance might indicate the occurrence of nuclear reactions in the polymer excited by the ultra-strong laser field amplified by the plasmonic nanoparticles.

Pulsed laser intensity dependence of crater formation and light reflection in the UDMA-TEGDMA copolymer nanocomposite, doped with resonant plasmonic gold nanorods

Plasmonic nanoparticles embedded into a solid matrix could play crucial role in laser-matter interactions. In this study, excess energy creation was observed during the single-shot irradiation of a polymer matrix containing plasmonic gold nanorods, resonant to the laser wavelength, with a high intensity femtosecond laser pulse. This effect was manifested in a 7-fold rise in the crater volume for a 1.7-fold increase of the laser intensity, and was absent in the pure polymer without the gold doping. It occurred at laser intensities > 1.5 x 1017 W/cm2, being the vanishing threshold of plasma mirror formation, resulting in a more than 80% increase of the amount of laser light entering the target. This threshold was found to be critical for the plasmonic effect of gold nanoantennas tuned to the wavelength of the laser on the crater formation.

Jackpot statistics, a physicist's approach

At a first glance lottery is a form of gambling, a game in which the chances of winning is extremely small. But upon a deeper look, considering that the Jackpot prize of lotteries is a result of the active participation of millions of players, we come to the conclusion that the interaction of the simple rules with the high number of players creates an emergent complex system. Such a system is characterized by its time-series that presents some interesting properties. Given the inherent stochastic nature of this game, it can be described within a mean-field type approach, such as the one implemented in the Local Growth and Global Reset (LGGR) model. We argue that the Jackpot time-series behaves ergodic for six lotteries with diverse formats and player pools. Specifying this consideration in the framework of the LGGR model, we model the lotteries with growth rates confirmed by the time-series. The reset rate is deduced mathematically and confirmed by data. Given these parameters we calculate the probability density of the Jackpot prizes, that fits well the empirically observed ones. We propose to use a single w parameter, as the product of the player pools found under the jurisdiction of the lottery and the chance that a single lottery ticket wins.

Kinetic Model Evaluation of Dynamical Properties of Nanaorod Antennas Embedded in a Polymer Carrying the Nuclei of Fusion Fuel

Recently laser induced fusion with simultaneous volume ignition, a spin-off from relativistic heavy ion collisions, was proposed, where implanted nanoantennas regulated and amplified the light absorption in the fusion target. Studies of resilience of the nanoantennas was published recently in vacuum. These studies are extended to nanoantennas embedded into a polymer, which modifies the nanoantenna's lifetime and absorption properties.

Wealth distribution in villages. Transition from socialism to capitalism in view of exhaustive wealth data and a master equation approach

Socio-economic inequalities derived from an exhaustive wealth distribution is studied in a closed geographical region from Transylvania (Romania). Exhaustive wealth data is computed from the agricultural records of the Sancraiu commune for three different economic situations. The gathered data is spanning two different periods from the communist economy and the present situation after 31 years of free market economy in Romania. The local growth and reset model based on an analytically solvable master equation is used to describe the observed data. The model with realistically chosen growth and reset rates is successful in describing both the experimentally observed distributions and the inequality indexes (Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient and Pareto point) derived from this data. The observed changes in these inequality measures are discussed in the context of the relevant socio-economic conditions.

Laser Wake Field Collider

Recently NAano-Plasmonic, Laser Inertial Fusion Experiments (NAPLIFE) were proposed, as an improved way to achieve laser driven fusion. The improvement is the combination of two basic research discoveries: (i) The possibility of detonations on space-time hyper-surfaces with time-like normal (i.e. simultaneous detonation in a whole volume) and (ii) to increase this volume to the whole target, by regulating the laser light absorption using nano-shells or nano-rods as antennas. These principles can be realized in an in-line, one dimensional configuration, in the simplest way with two opposing laser beams as in particle colliders. Such, opposing laser beam experiments were also performed recently. Here we study the consequences of the Laser Wake Field Acceleration (LWFA) if we experience it in a colliding laser beam set up. These studies can be applied to laser driven fusion, but also to other rapid phase transition, combustion, or ignition studies in other materials.

Gintropy: Gini index based generalization of Entropy

Entropy is being used in physics, mathematics, informatics and in related areas to describe equilibration, dissipation, maximal probability states and optimal compression of information. The Gini index on the other hand is an established measure for social and economical inequalities in a society. In this paper we explore the mathematical similarities and connections in these two quantities and introduce a new measure that is capable to connect these two at an interesting analogy level. This supports the idea that a generalization of the Gibbs--Boltzmann--Shannon entropy, based on a transformation of the Lorenz curve, can properly serve in quantifying different aspects of complexity in socio- and econo-physics.

Volume dependent extension of Kerr-Newman black hole thermodynamics

We show that the Hawking--Bekenstein entropy formula is modified by a factor of $8/3$ if one also considers a work term in the 1st law of thermodynamics by a pressure stemming from the Hawking radiation. We give an intuitive definition for the corresponding thermodynamical volume by the implicit definition $ε=Mc^2/V$, which is the average energy density of the Hawking radiation. This volume scales as $V \sim M^5$, agreeing with other suggestions. As a result the corresponding Smarr relation describes an extensive entropy and a stable effective equation of state $S(E,V)\sim E^{3/4}V^{1/4}$. These results pertain for charged and rotating Kerr-Newman black holes.

Black hole horizons can hide positive heat capacity

Regarding the volume as independent thermodynamic variable we point out that black hole horizons can hide positive heat capacity and specific heat. Such horizons are mechanically marginal, but thermally stable. In the absence of a canonical volume definition, we consider various suggestions scaling differently with the horizon radius. Assuming Euler-homogeneity of the entropy, besides the Hawking temperature, a pressure and a corresponding work term render the equation of state at the horizon thermally stable for any meaningful volume concept that scales larger than the horizon area. When considering also a Stefan--Boltzmann radiation like equation of state at the horizon, only one possible solution emerges: the Christodoulou--Rovelli volume, scaling as $V\sim R^5$, with an entropy $S = \frac{8}{3}S_{BH}$.

Entropic Distance for Nonlinear Master Equation

More and more works deal with statistical systems far from equilibrium, dominated by unidirectional stochastic processes augmented by rare resets. We analyze the construction of the entropic distance measure appropriate for such dynamics. We demonstrate that a power-like nonlinearity in the state probability in the master equation naturally leads to the Tsallis (Havrda-Charvát, Aczél-Daróczy) q-entropy formula in the context of seeking for the maximal entropy state at stationarity. A few possible applications of a certain simple and linear master equation to phenomena studied in statistical physics are listed at the end.

Science and Facebook: the same popularity law!

The distribution of scientific citations for publications selected with different rules (author, topic, institution, country, journal, etc.) collapse on a single curve if one plots the citations relative to their mean value. We find that the distribution of shares for the Facebook posts re-scale in the same manner to the very same curve with scientific citations. This finding suggests that citations are subjected to the same growth mechanism with Facebook popularity measures, being influenced by a statistically similar social environment and selection mechanism. In a simple master-equation approach the exponential growth of the number of publications and a preferential selection mechanism leads to a Tsallis-Pareto distribution offering an excellent description for the observed statistics. Based on our model and on the data derived from PubMed we predict that according to the present trend the average citations per scientific publications exponentially relaxes to about 4.

Equilibrium distributions in entropy driven balanced processes

For entropy driven balanced processes we obtain final states with Poisson, Bernoulli, negative binomial and Pólya distributions. We apply this both for complex networks and particle production. For random networks we follow the evolution of the degree distribution, $P_n$, in a system where a node can activate $k$ fixed connections from $K$ possible partnerships among all nodes. The total number of connections, $N$, is also fixed. For particle physics problems $P_n$ is the probability of having $n$ particles (or other quanta) distributed among $k$ states (phase space cells) while altogether a fixed number of $N$ particles reside on $K$ states.

Disentangling Soft and Hard Hadron Yields in PbPb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 ATeV

We demonstrate that charged pion spectra in central and peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 ATeV obtained via perturbative quantum chromodynamics improved parton model calculations [17] can be approximated by the Tsallis distribution for transverse momenta $p_T \geq$ 4 GeV/c. Then, we propose a model in which, hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions stem either from "soft" or "hard" processes, and are distributed according to the Tsallis distribution in both types of yields. We describe transverse spectra as well as azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) of charged hadrons stemming from various centrality PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 ATeV [40,41,42] analytically. In addition, we find that the anisotropy decreases for more central collisions.

A q-parameter bound for particle spectra based on black hole thermodynamics with Rényi-entropy

By regarding the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy of Schwarzschild black hole horizons as a non-extensive Tsallis entropy, its formal logarithm, the Rényi entropy, is considered. The resulting temperature - horizon-radius relation has the same form as the one obtained from a 3+1-dimensional black hole in anti-de Sitter space using the original entropy formula. In both cases the temperature has a minimum. A semi-classical estimate of the horizon radius at this minimum leads to a Bekenstein bound for the q-parameter in the Rényi entropy of micro black holes, (q >= 1 + 2/pi^2), which is surprisingly close to fitted q-parameters of cosmic ray spectra and power-law distribution of quarks coalescing to hadrons in high energy accelerator experiments.
