Cohomology of varieties over the maximal Kummer extension of a number field

Let $X$ be a smooth projective geometrically connected variety defined over a number field $K$. We prove that the geometric étale cohomology of $X$ with $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$-coefficients has finitely many classes invariant under the Galois group of the maximal Kummer extension of $K$ in odd degrees. In particular, every abelian variety has finite torsion over the maximal Kummer extension. This improves results by Rössler and the second author as well as Murotani and Ozeki. We also show that finiteness of torsion of a given abelian variety over non-abelian solvable extensions of $K$ is not controlled by the Galois group of the extension.

On the defect in the generalized Grunwald--Wang problem

The classical Grunwald--Wang theorem asserts that, unless we are in the so-called special case, local cyclic Galois extensions at finitely many completions of a number field can be approximated by a global cyclic extension. In the special case the obstruction is measured by a group of order 2. It has been known for a long time that the Grunwald--Wang theorem extends to a very general context of valued fields. Therefore it is natural to ask whether in the special case the obstruction is always measured by a finite group and if so, is the order of this group bounded independently of the number of places under consideration. We show that the answer to both questions is negative in general, already for rational function fields and discrete valuations coming from points of the affine line. This has some interesting links to the arithmetic of function fields over Q or Q_p.

Étale homotopy groups of algebraic groups and homogeneous spaces

We show the vanishing of the second homotopy group of the étale homotopy type of a smooth connected algebraic group over a separably closed field, completed away from the characteristic. This is an algebraic analogue of a classical theorem of Elie Cartan. Based on this result, we establish an explicit formula for the similarly completed second homotopy group of a homogeneous space.

On Tate--Shafarevich groups of one-dimensional families of commutative group schemes over number fields

Given a smooth geometrically connected curve $C$ over a field $k$ and a smooth commutative group scheme $G$ of finite type over the function field $K$ of $C$ we study the Tate--Shafarevich groups given by elements of $H^1(K,G)$ locally trivial at completions of $K$ associated with closed points of $C$. When $G$ comes from a $k$-group scheme and $k$ is a number field (or $k$ is a finitely generated field and $C$ has a $k$-point) we prove that the Tate--Shafarevich group is finite, generalizing a result of Saïdi and Tamagawa for abelian varieties. We also give examples of nontrivial Tate--Shafarevich groups in the case when $G$ is a torus and prove other related statements.

A generalization of Beilinson's geometric height pairing

In the first section of his seminal paper on height pairings, Beilinson constructed an $\ell$-adic height pairing for rational Chow groups of homologically trivial cycles of complementary codimension on smooth projective varieties over the function field of a curve over an algebraically closed field, and asked about an generalization to higher dimensional bases. In this paper we answer Beilinson's question by constructing a pairing for varieties defined over the function field of a smooth variety $B$ over an algebraically closed field, with values in the second $\ell$-adic cohomology group of $B$. Over $\Bbb C$ our pairing is in fact $\Bbb Q$-valued, and in general we speculate about its geometric origin.

A general theory of André's solution algebras

We extend Yves André's theory of solution algebras in differential Galois theory to a general Tannakian context. As applications, we establish analogues of his correspondence between solution fields and observable subgroups of the Galois group for iterated differential equations in positive characteristic and for difference equations. The use of solution algebras in the difference algebraic context also allows a new approach to recent results of Philippon and Adamczewski--Faverjon in transcendence theory.

Cohomology and torsion cycles over the maximal cyclotomic extension

A classical theorem by K. Ribet asserts that an abelian variety defined over the maximal cyclotomic extension $K$ of a number field has only finitely many torsion points. We show that this statement can be viewed as a particular case of a much more general one, namely that the absolute Galois group of $K$ acts with finitely many fixed points on the étale cohomology with $\bf Q/\bf Z$-coefficients of a smooth proper $\overline K$-variety defined over $K$. We also present a conjectural generalization of Ribet's theorem to torsion cycles of higher codimension. We offer supporting evidence for the conjecture in codimension 2, as well as an analogue in positive characteristic.

Local-global questions for tori over $p$-adic function fields

We study local-global questions for Galois cohomology over the function field of a curve defined over a p-adic field (a field of cohomological dimension 3). We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of the base field coming from a closed point of the curve. In the case of a torus we establish a perfect duality between the first Tate-Shafarevich group of the torus and the second Tate-Shafarevich group of the dual torus. As an application, we show that the failure of the local-global principle for rational points on principal homogeneous spaces under tori is controlled by a certain subquotient of a third etale cohomology group. We also prove a generalization to principal homogeneous spaces of certain reductive group schemes in the case when the base curve has good reduction.

Weak approximation for tori over $p$-adic function fields

This is the companion piece to "Local-global questions for tori over p-adic function fields" by the first and third authors. We study local-global questions for Galois cohomology over the function field of a curve defined over a p-adic field, the main focus here being weak approximation of rational points. We construct a 9-term Poitou--Tate type exact sequence for tori over a field as above (and also a 12-term sequence for finite modules). Like in the number field case, part of the sequence can then be used to analyze the defect of weak approximation for a torus. We also show that the defect of weak approximation is controlled by a certain subgroup of the third unramified cohomology group of the torus.

Prime-to-p étale covers of algebraic groups

Let G be a connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p (possibly 0), and X a variety on which G acts transitively with connected stabilizers. We show that any étale Galois cover of X of degree prime to p is also homogeneous, and that the maximal prime-to-p quotient of the étale fundamental group of X is commutative. We moreover obtain an explicit bound for the number of topological generators of the said quotient. When G is commutative, we also obtain a description of the prime-to-p torsion in the Brauer group of G.

Autour de la conjecture de Tate `a coefficients Z_l pour les vari'et'es sur les corps finis

This partly expository paper investigates versions of the Tate conjecture on the cycle map for varieties defined over finite fields with values in 'etale cohomology with Z_\ell-coefficients. The bulk of the paper is an exposition of a 1998 result of C. Schoen which shows that an integral version of the conjecture holds for 1-cycles provided the usual conjecture is true for divisors on surfaces. In a last section we then derive from Schoen's theorem new results on the existence of degree one zero-cycles on varieties defined over the function field of a smooth proper curve C over the algebraic closure of a finite field. In particular, we show that if the variety in question is a smooth projective complete intersection of dimension at least 3 and of degree prime to the characteristic, then a zero-cycle of degree one exists if the Tate conjecture is true for divisors on surfaces and the variety extends to a proper fibration over C all of whose fibres possess a component of multiplicity one.
