New solutions of viscous relativistic hydrodynamics

Relativistic hydrodynamics represents a powerful tool to investigate the time evolution of the strongly interacting quark gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The equations are solved often numerically, and numerous analytic solutions also exist. However, the inclusion of viscous effects in exact, analytic solutions has received less attention. Here we utilize Hubble flow to investigate the role of bulk viscosity, and present different classes of exact, analytic solutions valid also in the presence of dissipative effects.

Accelerating hydrodynamic description of pseudorapidity density and the initial energy density in p+p, Cu+Cu, Au+Au, and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC

A known class of analytic, exact, accelerating solutions of prefect relativistic hydrodynamics with longitudinal acceleration is utilized to describe results on the pseudorapidity distributions for different collision systems. These results include $dN/dη$ measured in p+p, Cu+Cu, Au+Au, and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC, in a broad centrality range. Going beyond the traditional Bjorken model, from the accelerating hydrodynamic description we determine the initial energy density and other thermodynamic quantities in those collisions.

Initial energy density of p+p collisions at the LHC

Accelerating, exact, explicit and simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics allow for a simple description of highly relativistic p+p collisions. These solutions yield a finite rapidity distribution, thus they lead to an advanced estimate of the initial energy density of high energy collisions. We show that such an advanced estimate yields an initial energy density in $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV p+p collisions at LHC around or above the critical energy density from lattice QCD, and a corresponding initial temperature above the critical temperature from QCD and the Hagedorn temperature. We also show, that several times the critical energy density may have been reached in high multiplicity events, hinting at a non-hadronic medium created in high multiplicity $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV p+p collisions.

Initial energy density of $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 and 8 TeV p+p collisions at the LHC

Results from the RHIC and LHC experiments show, that in relativistic heavy ion collisions, a new state of matter, a strongly interacting perfect fluid is created. Accelerating, exact and explicit solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics allow for a simple and natural description of this medium. A finite rapidity distribution arises from these solutions, leading to an advanced estimate of the initial energy density of high energy collisions. These solutions can be utilized to describe various aspects of proton-proton collisions, as originally suggested by Landau. We show that an advanced estimate based on hydrodynamics yields an initial energy density in $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV p+p collisions at LHC on the same order as the critical energy density from lattice QCD, and a corresponding initial temperature around the critical temperature from QCD and the Hagedorn temperature. The multiplicity dependence of the estimated initial energy density suggests that in high multiplicity pp collisions at the LHC, there is large enough initial energy density to create a non-hadronic perfect fluid.

Total, inelastic and (quasi-)elastic cross sections of high energy pA and gamma-A reactions with the dipole formalism

In order to understand the initial partonic state in proton-nucleus and electron-nucleus collisions, we investigate the total, inelastic, and (quasi-)elastic cross sections in pA and gamma-A collisions, as these observables are insensitive to possible collective effects in the final state interactions. We used as a tool the DIPSY dipole model, which is based on BFKL dynamics including non-leading effects, saturation, and colour interference, which we have extended to describe collisions of protons and virtual photons with nuclei. We present results for collisions with O, Cu, and Pb nuclei, and reproduce preliminary data on the pPb inelastic cross section at LHC by CMS and LHCb. The large NN cross section results in pA scattering that scales approximately with the area. The results are compared with conventional Glauber model calculations, and we note that the more subtle dynamical effects are more easily studied in the ratios between the total, inelastic and (quasi-)elastic cross sections. The smaller photon interaction makes the gamma-A collisions more closely proportional to A, and we see here that future electron-ion colliders would be valuable complements to the pA collisions in studies of dynamical effects from correlations, coherence and fluctuations in the initial state in high energy nuclear collisions.

Extracting the Odderon from $pp$ and $\bar pp$ scattering data

Starting from a simple empirical parametrization of the scattering amplitude, successfully describing the dip-bump structure of elastic $pp$ scattering in $t$ at fixed values of $s$, we construct a toy model interpolating between missing energy gaps to extract the Odderon contribution from the difference between $\bar pp$ and $pp$ elastic and total cross sections. The model is fitted to data from $\sqrt s=23.5$ GeV to 7 TeV and used to extract the Odderon and its ratio to the Pomeron.

Effects of chain decays, radial flow and $U_{A}(1)$ restoration on the low-mass dilepton enhancement in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au+Au reactions

In sqrt(sNN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions PHENIX reported a significant enhancement in the low-mass region (0.1 < m_ee < 0.7 GeV) of the dielectron spectrum, which is still not fully understood. Several theoretical works and an indirect measurement suggest that, due to the possible restoration of the U_A(1) part of the chiral symmetry in a hot and dense medium, the mass of the eta' meson may substantially decrease. This work reports on a statistically acceptable description of the PHENIX low-mass dilepton enhancement using a radial flow dominated meson spectra, chain decays of long-lived resonances and an in-medium eta' mass modification.

In-medium reduction of the η' mass in \sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions

A reduction of the mass of the η'(958) meson may indicate the restoration of the UA(1) symmetry in a hot and dense hadronic matter, corresponding to the return of the 9th, "prodigal" Goldstone boson. We report on an analysis of a combined PHENIX and STAR data set on the intercept parameter of the two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions, as measuremed in \sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. To describe this combined PHENIX and STAR dataset, an in-medium η' mass reduction of at least 200 MeV is needed, at the 99.9 % confidence level in a broad model class of resonance multiplicities. Energy, system size and centrality dependence of the observed effect is also discussed.

Interplay among the azimuthally dependent HBT radii and the elliptic flow

We present a calculation of the elliptic flow and azimuthal dependence of the correlation radii in the ellipsoidally symmetric generalization of the Buda-Lund model. The elliptic flow is shown to depend only on the flow anisotropy while in case of correlation radii both flow and space anisotropy play an important role in determining their azimuthal oscillation. We also outline a simple procedure for determining the parameters of the model from data.

Status and Promise of Particle Interferometry in Heavy-Ion Collisions

After five years of running at RHIC, and on the eve of the LHC heavy-ion program, we highlight the status of femtoscopic measurements. We emphasize the role interferometry plays in addressing fundamental questions about the state of matter created in such collisions, and present an enumerated list of measurements, analyses and calculations that are needed to advance the field in the coming years.

On the formation of Hubble flow in Little Bangs

A dynamical appearance of scaling solutions in the relativistic hydrodynamics applied to describe ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied. We consider the boost-invariant cylindrically symmetric systems and the effects of the phase transition are taken into account by using a temperature dependent sound velocity inferred from the lattice simulations of QCD. We find that the transverse flow acquires the scaling form r/t within the short evolution times, 10 - 15 fm, only if the initial transverse flow originating from the pre-equilibrium collective behavior is present at the initial stage of the hydrodynamic evolution. The amount of such pre-equilibrium flow is correlated with the initial pressure gradient; larger gradients require smaller initial flow. The results of the numerical calculations support the phenomenological parameterizations used in the Blast-Wave, Buda-Lund, and Cracow models of the freeze-out process.

Observation of Partial U_A(1) Restoration from Two-Pion Bose-Einstein Correlations

The effective intercept parameter of the two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation function, lambda_*, is found to be sensitive to the partial restoration of U_A(1) symmetry in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. An increase in the yield of the eta' meson, proposed earlier as a signal of partial U_A(1) restoration, is shown to create a ``hole'' in the low p_t region of lambda_*. A comparison with NA44 data from central S+Pb collisions at 200 AGeV is made and implications for future heavy ion experiments are discussed.
