Static and dynamical quantum correlations in phases of an alternating field XY model

We investigate the static and dynamical patterns of entanglement in an anisotropic XY model with an alternating transverse magnetic field, which is equivalent to a two-component one-dimensional Fermi gas on a lattice, a system realizable with current technology. Apart from the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, the model possesses a dimer phase which is not present in the transverse XY model. At zero temperature, we find that the first derivative of bipartite entanglement can detect all the three phases. We analytically show that the model has a "factorization line" on the plane of system parameters, in which the zero temperature state is separable. Along with investigating the effect of temperature on entanglement in a phase plane, we also report a non-monotonic behavior of entanglement with respect to temperature in the anti-ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, which is surprisingly absent in the dimer phase. Since the time dynamics of entanglement in a realizable physical system plays an important role in quantum information processing tasks, the evolutions of entanglement at small as well as large time are examined. Consideration of large time behavior of entanglement helps us to prove that in this model, entanglement is always ergodic. We observe that other quantum correlation measures can qualitatively show similar features in zero and finite temperatures. However, unlike nearest-neighbor entanglement, the nearest-neighbor information theoretic measures can be both ergodic as well as non-ergodic, depending on the system parameters.

Activation of Nonmonogamous Multipartite Quantum States

The monogamy relation for quantum correlations is not satisfied by all measures for all multiparty quantum states. We prove that an arbitrary quantum state which is nonmonogamous for negativity will become monogamous if a finite number of copies of the same state is provided. We refer this as activation of nonmonogamous states. We also show that multiple copies of a state satisfy monogamy for negativity if it does so for a single copy. The results are true for all quantum states of an arbitrary number of parties. Moreover, we find that two different three-qubit pure states which individually violate monogamy relation for negativity, taken together can satisfy the three-party monogamy relation. This holds for almost all three-qubit pure states while it is true for all three-qubit pure states when a four-party monogamy relation is used to check for their activation. We finally connect monogamy of negativity with genuine multipartite entanglement.

Statistics of leading digits leads to unification of quantum correlations

We show that the frequency distribution of the first significant digits of the numbers in the data sets generated from a large class of measures of quantum correlations, which are either entanglement measures, or belong to the information-theoretic paradigm, exhibit a universal behaviour. In particular, for Haar uniformly simulated arbitrary two-qubit states, we find that the first-digit distribution corresponding to a collection of chosen computable quantum correlation quantifiers tend to follow the first-digit law, known as the Benford's law, when the rank of the states increases. Considering a two-qubit state which is obtained from a system governed by paradigmatic spin Hamiltonians, namely, the XY model in a transverse field, and the XXZ model, we show that entanglement as well as information theoretic measures violate the Benford's law. We quantitatively discuss the violation of the Benford's law by using a violation parameter, and demonstrate that the violation parameter can signal quantum phase transitions occurring in these models. We also comment on the universality of the statistics of first significant digits corresponding to appropriate measures of quantum correlations in the case of multipartite systems as well as systems in higher dimensions.

Reducing Computational Complexity of Quantum Correlations

We address the issue of reducing the resource required to compute information-theoretic quantum correlation measures like quantum discord and quantum work deficit in two qubits and higher dimensional systems. We show that determination of the quantum correlation measure is possible even if we utilize a restricted set of local measurements. We find that the determination allows us to obtain a closed form of quantum discord and quantum work deficit for several classes of states, with a low error. We show that the computational error caused by the constraint over the complete set of local measurements reduces fast with an increase in the size of the restricted set, implying usefulness of constrained optimization, especially with the increase of dimensions. We perform quantitative analysis to investigate how the error scales with the system size, taking into account a set of plausible constructions of the constrained set. Carrying out a comparative study, we show that the resource required to optimize quantum work deficit is usually higher than that required for quantum discord. We also demonstrate that minimization of quantum discord and quantum work deficit is easier in the case of two-qubit mixed states of fixed ranks and with positive partial transpose in comparison to the corresponding states having non-positive partial transpose. Applying the methodology to quantum spin models, we show that the constrained optimization can be used with advantage in analyzing such systems in quantum information-theoretic language. For bound entangled states, we show that the error is significantly low when the measurements correspond to the spin observables along the three Cartesian coordinates, and thereby we obtain expressions of quantum discord and quantum work deficit for these bound entangled states.

Distribution of Bell inequality violation vs. multiparty quantum correlation measures

Violation of a Bell inequality guarantees the existence of quantum correlations in a quantum state. A pure bipartite quantum state, having nonvanishing quantum correlation, always violates a Bell inequality. Such correspondence is absent for multipartite pure quantum states. For a shared multipartite quantum state, we establish a connection between the monogamy of Bell inequality violation and genuine multi-site entanglement as well as monogamy-based multiparty quantum correlation measures. We find that generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states and another single-parameter family states which we refer to as the "special Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger" states have the status of extremal states in such relations.

Generalized Geometric Measure of Entanglement for Multiparty Mixed States

Computing entanglement of an arbitrary bipartite or multipartite mixed state is in general not an easy task as it usually involves complex optimization. Here we show that exploiting symmetries of certain mixed states, we can compute a genuine multiparty entanglement measure, the generalized geometric measure for these classes of mixed states. The chosen states have different ranks and consist of an arbitrary number of parties.

A Minimal description of morphological hierarchy in two-dimensional aggregates

A dimensionless parameter $Λ$ is proposed to describe a hierarchy of morphologies in two-dimensional (2D) aggregates formed due to varying competition between short-range attraction and long-range repul- sion. Structural transitions from finite non-compact to compact to percolated structures are observed in the configurations simulated by molecular dynamics at a constant temperature and density. Configurational randomness across the transition, measured by the two-body excess entropy $S_2$, exhibits data collapse with the average potential energy $\bar{\mathcal{E}}$ of the systems. Independent master curves are presented among $S_2$, the reduced second virial coefficient $B_2^*$ and $Λ$, justifying this minimal description. This work lays out a coherent basis for the study of 2D aggregate morphologies relevant to diverse nano- and bio-processes.

Subtraction better than addition: Entanglement in multimode squeezed vacuum post-interface with photons

We investigate the entanglement patterns of photon-added and -subtracted four-mode squeezed vacuum states. Entanglements in different scenarios are analyzed by varying the number of photons added or subtracted in certain modes, which are referred to as the "player" modes, the others being "spectators." We find that the photon-subtracted state can give us higher entanglement than the photon-added state which is in contrast of the two-mode situation. We also study the logarithmic negativity of the two-mode reduced density matrix obtained from the four-mode state which again shows that the state after photon subtraction can possess higher entanglement than that of the photon-added state, and we then compare it to that of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state. Moreover, we examine the non-Gaussianity of the photon-added and -subtracted states to find that the rich features provided by entanglement cannot be captured by the measure of non-classicality.

Transition in heterogeneous dynamics across the morphological hierarchy in two-dimensional aggregates

Two-dimensional (2D) particulate aggregates formed due to competing interactions exhibit a range of non-equilibrium steady state morphologies from finite-size compact crystalline structures to non-compact string-like conformations. We report a transition in heterogeneous microscopic dynamics across this morphological hierarchy as a function of decreasing long-range repulsion relative to short-range attraction at a constant {\it low} density and temperature. Following a very slow cooling protocol to form steady state aggregates, we show that geometric frustration inherent to competing interactions assures non-ergodicity of the system, which in turn results in long-time sub diffusive relaxation of the same. Analysing individual particle trajectories generated by molecular dynamics, we identify {\it caging} dynamics of particles in compact clusters in contrast to the {\it bonding} scenario for non-compact ones. Finally, by monitoring temperature dependence, we present a generic relation between diffusivity and structural randomness of the aggregates, irrespective of their thermodynamic equilibrium.

Pre-yield non-affine fluctuations and a hidden critical point in strained crystals

A crystalline solid exhibits thermally induced localised {\em non-affine} droplets in the absence of external stress. Here we show that upon an imposed shear, the size of these droplets grow until they percolate at a critical strain, well {\em below} the value at which the solid begins to yield. This critical point does not manifest in bulk thermodynamic or mechanical properties, but is {\em hidden} and reveals itself in the onset of inhomogeneities in elastic moduli, marked changes in the appearance and local properties of non-affine droplets and a sudden enhancement in defect pair concentration. Slow relaxation of stress and an-elasticity appear as observable dynamical consequences of this hidden criticality. Our results may be directly verified in colloidal crystals with video microscopy techniques but are expected to have more general validity.

Distributed quantum dense coding with two receivers in noisy environments

We investigate the effect of noisy channels in a classical information transfer through a multipartite state which acts as a substrate for the distributed quantum dense coding protocol between several senders and two receivers. The situation is qualitatively different from the case with one or more senders and a single receiver. We obtain an upper bound on the multipartite capacity which is tightened in case of the covariant noisy channel. We also establish a relation between the genuine multipartite entanglement of the shared state and the capacity of distributed dense coding using that state, both in the noiseless and the noisy scenarios. Specifically, we find that in the case of multiple senders and two receivers, the corresponding generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states possess higher dense coding capacities as compared to a significant fraction of pure states having the same multipartite entanglement.

Multipartite Dense Coding vs. Quantum Correlation: Noise Inverts Relative Capability of Information Transfer

A highly entangled bipartite quantum state is more advantageous for the quantum dense coding protocol than states with low entanglement. Such a correspondence, however, does not exist even for pure quantum states in the multipartite domain. We establish a connection between the multiparty capacity of classical information transmission in quantum dense coding and several multipartite quantum correlation measures of the shared state, used in the dense coding protocol. In particular, we show that for the noiseless channel, if multipartite quantum correlations of an arbitrary multipartite state of arbitrary number of qubits is the same as that of the corresponding generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, then the multipartite dense coding capability of former is the same or better than that of the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. Interestingly, in a noisy channel scenario, where we consider both uncorrelated and correlated noise models, the relative abilities of the quantum channels to transfer classical information can get inverted by administering a sufficient amount of noise. When the shared state is an arbitrary multipartite mixed state, we also establish a link between the classical capacity for the noiseless case and multipartite quantum correlation measures.

Non-affine heterogeneities and droplet fluctuations in an equilibrium crystalline solid

We show, using molecular dynamics simulations, that a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones solid is subject to droplet fluctuations characterized by {\em non-affine} deviations from local crystallinity. The fraction of particles in these droplets increases as the mean density of the solid decreases and approaches $\approx 20$% of the total number in the vicinity of the fluid-solid phase boundary. We monitor the geometry, local equation of state, density correlations and van Hove functions of these droplets and show that some of these droplets are fluid-like and compact, while some are glassy and string-like. We provide evidence that these non-affine heterogeneities should be interpreted as being droplet fluctuations from nearby, metastable minima.

Structural Transitions in A Crystalline Bilayer : The Case of Lennard Jones and Gaussian Core Models

We study structural transitions in a system of interacting particles arranged as a crystalline bilayer, as a function of the density $ρ$ and the distance $d$ between the layers. As $d$ is decreased a sequence of transitions involving triangular, rhombic, square and centered rectangular lattices is observed. The sequence of phases and the order of transitions depends on the nature of interactions.
