The Role of ISAC in 6G Networks: Enabling Next-Generation Wireless Systems

The commencement of the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks represents a fundamental shift in the integration of communication and sensing technologies to support next-generation applications. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key concept in this evolution, enabling end-to-end support for both communication and sensing within a unified framework. It enhances spectrum efficiency, reduces latency, and supports diverse use cases, including smart cities, autonomous systems, and perceptive environments. This tutorial provides a comprehensive overview of ISAC's role in 6G networks, beginning with its evolution since 5G and the technical drivers behind its adoption. Core principles and system variations of ISAC are introduced, followed by an in-depth discussion of the enabling technologies that facilitate its practical deployment. The paper further analyzes current research directions to highlight key challenges, open issues, and emerging trends. Design insights and recommendations are also presented to support future development and implementation. This work ultimately tries to address three central questions: Why is ISAC essential for 6G? What innovations does it bring? How will it shape the future of wireless communication?

A Variable Step Sizes Frequency Offsets-Compensated Least Mean Squares Algorithm

Frequency offsets-compensated least mean squares (FO-LMS) algorithm is a generic method for estimating a wireless channel under carrier and sampling frequency offsets when the transmitted signal is beforehand known to the receiver. The algorithm iteratively and explicitly adjusts its estimates of the channel and frequency offsets using stochastic gradient descent-based rules and the step sizes of these rules determine the learning rate and stability of the algorithm. Within the stability conditions, the choice of step sizes reflects a trade-off between the algorithm's ability to react to changes in the channel and the ability to minimize misadjustments caused by noise. This paper provides theoretical expressions to predict and optimize the tracking and misadjusment errors of FO-LMS when estimating channels and frequency offsets with known time-varying characteristics. This work also proposes a method to adjust the FO-LMS's step sizes based on the algorithm's performance when the time-varying characteristics are not known, which is more often the case in practice. Accuracy of the expressions and performance of the proposed variable step sizes algorithm are studied through simulations.

Decision Feedback-Aided Known-Interference Cancellation

Known-interference cancellation (KIC) in combination with cooperative jamming can be used to provide covertness and security to wireless communications at the physical layer. However, since the signal of interest (SI) of a wireless communication system acts as estimation noise, i.e., interference, to KIC, the SI limits the extent to which the known interference (KI) can be canceled and that in turn limits the throughput of the wireless communication system that is being hidden or secured. In this letter, we analyze a decision feedback-aided known-interference cancellation (DF-KIC) structure in which both the KI and SI are canceled iteratively and successively. Measurement results demonstrate that introducing decision feedback to KIC improves its KI cancellation capability and hence increases the wireless communication system's useful throughput, albeit at the expense of a higher computational load.

Next-Generation MIMO Transceivers for Integrated Sensing and Communications: Unique Security Vulnerabilities and Solutions

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), which is recognized as a key enabler for sixth generation (6G), has brought new opportunities for intelligent, sustainable, and connected wireless networks. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver technology lies at the core of this paradigm, providing the degrees of freedom required for simultaneous data transmission and accurate radar sensing. The tight integration of sensing and communication introduces unique security vulnerabilities that extend beyond conventional physical-layer security (PLS). In particular, high-power transmissions directed at sensing targets may empower adversarial eavesdroppers, whereas passive interception of ISAC echoes can reveal sensitive information such as target locations and mobility patterns. This article presents an overview of recent advances in MIMO ISAC transceiver design, considering transmitter perspectives, receiver architectures, and full-duplex implementations. We examine MIMO transceiver designs under unique security threats specific to ISAC and highlight emerging countermeasures, including secure signaling design, interference exploitation, and transceiver optimization under adversarial conditions. Finally, we discuss challenges and research opportunities for developing secure ISAC systems in next-generation wireless networks.

On the Military Applications of Large Language Models

In this paper, military use cases or applications and implementation thereof are considered for natural language processing and large language models, which have broken into fame with the invention of the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) and the extensive foundation model pretraining done by OpenAI for ChatGPT and others. First, we interrogate a GPT-based language model (viz. Microsoft Copilot) to make it reveal its own knowledge about their potential military applications and then critically assess the information. Second, we study how commercial cloud services (viz. Microsoft Azure) could be used readily to build such applications and assess which of them are feasible. We conclude that the summarization and generative properties of language models directly facilitate many applications at large and other features may find particular uses.

Urban RIS-Assisted HAP Networks: Performance Analysis Using Stochastic Geometry

This paper studies a high-altitude platform (HAP) network supported by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The practical irregular placement of HAPs and RISs is modeled using homogeneous Poisson point processes, while buildings that cause blockages in urban areas are modeled as a Boolean scheme of rectangles. We introduce a novel approach to characterize the statistical channel based on generalized Beta prime distribution. Analytical expressions for coverage probability and ergodic capacity in an interference-limited system are derived and validated through Monte Carlo simulations. The findings show notable performance improvements and reveal the impact of various system parameters, including blockages effect which contribute in mitigating interference from the other visible HAPs. This proposed system could enhance connectivity and enable effective data offloading in urban environments.

Integrating RIS into HAP Networks for Improved Connectivity

This paper investigates a high-altitude platform (HAP) network enhanced with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The arbitrary placement of HAPs and RISs is modeled using stochastic geometry, specifically as homogeneous Poisson point processes. The HAP--RIS links are assumed to follow Rician fading, while the RIS--user links experience shadowed-Rician fading. The system's coverage probability and ergodic capacity are derived analytically and validated through Monte Carlo simulations. The results highlight significant performance gains and demonstrate the influence of various system parameters and fading conditions. The proposed system has potential for enhancing connectivity and data offloading in practical scenarios.

In-Band Full-Duplex MIMO Systems for Simultaneous Communications and Sensing: Challenges, Methods, and Future Perspectives

In-band Full-Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems offer a significant opportunity for Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) due to their capability to realize simultaneous signal transmissions and receptions. This feature has been recently exploited to devise spectrum-efficient simultaneous information transmission and monostatic sensing operations, a line of research typically referred to as MIMO FD-ISAC. In this article, capitalizing on a recent FD MIMO architecture with reduced complexity analog cancellation, we present an FD-enabled framework for simultaneous communications and sensing using data signals. In contrast to communications applications, the framework's goal is not to mitigate self interference, since it includes reflections of the downlink data transmissions from targets in the FD node's vicinity, but to optimize the system parameters for the intended dual functionality. The unique characteristics and challenges of a generic MIMO FD-ISAC system are discussed along with a broad overview of state-of-the-art special cases, including numerical investigations. Several directions for future work on FD-enabled ISAC relevant to signal processing communities are also provided.

Enhancing HAP Networks with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This paper presents and analyzes a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based high-altitude platform (HAP) network. Stochastic geometry is used to model the arbitrary locations of the HAPs and RISs as a homogenous Poisson point process. Considering that the links between the HAPs, RISs, and users are $κ$--$μ$ faded, the coverage and ergodic capacity of the proposed system are expressed. The analytically derived performance measures are verified through Monte Carlo simulations. Significant improvements in system performance and the impact of system parameters are demonstrated in the results. Thus, the proposed system concept can improve connectivity and data offloading in smart cities and dense urban environments.

Analog Beamforming for In-Band Full-Duplex Phased Arrays with Quantized Phase Shifters under a Per-Antenna Received Power Constraint

This letter develops a novel transmit beamforming (BF) design for canceling self-interference (SI) in analog in-band full-duplex phased arrays. Our design maximizes transmit BF gain in a desired direction while simultaneously reducing SI power to below a specified threshold on per-antenna basis to avoid saturating receive-chain components, such as LNAs. Core to our approach is that it accounts for real-world phase shifters used in analog phased array systems, whose limited resolution imposes non-convex constraints on BF design. We overcome this by transforming these non-convex constraints into convex polygon constraints, which we then solve through semidefinite relaxation and a rank refinement procedure. Numerical results show that our proposed BF scheme reliably cancels SI to the target power threshold at each receive antenna while sacrificing little in transmit BF gain, even with modest phase shifter resolution.

Millimeter-wave Mobile Sensing and Environment Mapping: Models, Algorithms and Validation

Integrating efficient connectivity, positioning and sensing functionalities into 5G New Radio (NR) and beyond mobile cellular systems is one timely research paradigm, especially at mm-wave and sub-THz bands. In this article, we address the radio-based sensing and environment mapping prospects with specific emphasis on the user equipment (UE) side. We first describe an efficient l1-regularized least-squares (LS) approach to obtain sparse range-angle charts at individual measurement or sensing locations. For the subsequent environment mapping, we then introduce a novel state model for mapping diffuse and specular scattering, which allows efficient tracking of individual scatterers over time using interacting multiple model (IMM) extended Kalman filter and smoother. Also the related measurement selection and data association problems are addressed. We provide extensive numerical indoor mapping results at the 28 GHz band deploying OFDM-based 5G NR uplink waveform with 400 MHz channel bandwidth, covering both accurate ray-tracing based as well as actual RF measurement results. The results illustrate the superiority of the dynamic tracking-based solutions, compared to static reference methods, while overall demonstrate the excellent prospects of radio-based mobile environment sensing and mapping in future mm-wave networks.

Beamformer Design and Optimization for Full-Duplex Joint Communication and Sensing at mm-Waves

In this article, we study the joint communication and sensing (JCAS) paradigm in the context of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) mobile communication networks. We specifically address the JCAS challenges stemming from the full-duplex operation and from the co-existence of multiple simultaneous beams for communications and sensing purposes. To this end, we first formulate and solve beamforming optimization problems for hybrid beamforming based multiuser multiple-input and multiple-output JCAS systems. The cost function to be maximized is the beamformed power at the sensing direction while constraining the beamformed power at the communications directions, suppressing interuser interference and cancelling full-duplexing related self-interference (SI). We then also propose new transmitter and receiver beamforming solutions for purely analog beamforming based JCAS systems that maximize the beamforming gain at the sensing direction while controlling the beamformed power at the communications direction(s), cancelling the SI as well as eliminating the potential reflection from the communication direction and optimizing the combined radar pattern (CRP). Both closed-form and numerical optimization based formulations are provided. We analyze and evaluate the performance through extensive simulations, and show that substantial gains and benefits in terms of radar transmit gain, CRP, and SI suppression can be achieved with the proposed beamforming methods.

Nonhomogeneous Stochastic Geometry Analysis of Massive LEO Communication Constellations

Providing truly ubiquitous connectivity requires development of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite Internet, whose theoretical study is lagging behind network-specific simulations. In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the downlink coverage probability and average data rate of a massive inclined LEO constellation in terms of total interference power's Laplace transform in the presence of fading and shadowing, ergo presenting a stochastic geometry based analysis. We assume the desired link to experience Nakagami m fading, which serves to represent different fading scenarios by varying integer m, while the interfering channels can follow any fading model without an effect on analytical tractability. To take into account the inherent nonuniform distribution of satellites across different latitudes, we model the LEO network as a nonhomogeneous Poisson point process with its intensity being a function of satellites' actual distribution in terms of constellation size, the altitude of the constellation, and the inclination of orbital planes. From the numerical results, we observe optimum points for both the constellation altitude and the number of orthogonal frequency channels; interestingly, the optimum user's latitude is greater than the inclination angle due to the presence of fewer interfering satellites. Overall, the presented study facilitates general stochastic evaluation and planning of satellite Internet constellations without specific orbital simulations or tracking data on satellites' exact positions in space.

HybridDeepRx: Deep Learning Receiver for High-EVM Signals

In this paper, we propose a machine learning (ML) based physical layer receiver solution for demodulating OFDM signals that are subject to a high level of nonlinear distortion. Specifically, a novel deep learning based convolutional neural network receiver is devised, containing layers in both time- and frequency domains, allowing to demodulate and decode the transmitted bits reliably despite the high error vector magnitude (EVM) in the transmit signal. Extensive set of numerical results is provided, in the context of 5G NR uplink incorporating also measured terminal power amplifier characteristics. The obtained results show that the proposed receiver system is able to clearly outperform classical linear receivers as well as existing ML receiver approaches, especially when the EVM is high in comparison with modulation order. The proposed ML receiver can thus facilitate pushing the terminal power amplifier (PA) systems deeper into saturation, and thereon improve the terminal power-efficiency, radiated power and network coverage.

Improved Coefficients for the Karagiannidis-Lioumpas Approximations and Bounds to the Gaussian Q-Function

We revisit the Karagiannidis-Lioumpas (KL) approximation of the Q-function by optimizing its coefficients in terms of absolute error, relative error and total error. For minimizing the maximum absolute/relative error, we describe the targeted uniform error functions by sets of nonlinear equations so that the optimized coefficients are the solutions thereof. The total error is minimized with numerical search. We also introduce an extra coefficient in the KL approximation to achieve significantly tighter absolute and total error at the expense of unbounded relative error. Furthermore, we extend the KL expression to lower and upper bounds with optimized coefficients that minimize the error measures in the same way as for the approximations.

Waveforms and End-to-End Efficiency in RF Wireless Power Transfer Using Digital Radio Transmitter

We study radio-frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) using a digital radio transmitter for applications where alternative analog transmit circuits are impractical. An important paramter for assessing the viability of an RF WPT system is its end-to-end efficiency. In this regard, we present a prototype test-bed comprising a software-defined radio (SDR) transmitter and an energy harvesting receiver with a low resistive load; employing an SDR makes our research meaningful for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We analyze the effect of clipping and non-linear amplification at the SDR on multisine waveforms. Our experiments suggest that when the DC input power at the transmitter is constant, high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) multisine are unsuitable for RF WPT over a flat-fading channel, due to their low average radiated power. The results indicate that the end-to-end efficiency is positively correlated to the average RF power of the waveform, and that it reduces with increasing PAPR. Consequently, digital modulations such as phase-shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modeulation (QAM) yield better end-to-end efficiency than multisines. Moreover, the end-to-end efficiency of PSK and QAM signals is invariant of the transmission bit rate. An in-depth analysis of the end-to-end efficiency of WPT reveals that the transmitter efficiency is lower than the receiver efficiency. Furthermore, we study the impact of a reflecting surface on the end-to-end efficiency of WPT, and assess the transmission quality of the information signals by evaluating their error vector magnitude (EVM) for SWIPT. Overall, the experimental observations of end-to-end efficiency and EVM suggest that, while employing an SDR transmitter with fixed DC input power, a baseband quadrature PSK signal is most suitable for SWIPT at large, among PSK and QAM signals.

Stochastic Analysis of Satellite Broadband by Mega-Constellations with Inclined LEOs

As emerging massive constellations are intended to provide seamless connectivity for remote areas using hundreds of small low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, new methodologies have great importance to study the performance of these networks. In this paper, we derive both downlink and uplink analytical expressions for coverage probability and data rate of an inclined LEO constellation under general fading, regardless of exact satellites' positions. Our solution involves two phases as we, first, abstract the network into a uniformly distributed network. Secondly, we obtain a new parameter, effective number of satellites, for every user's latitude which compensates for the performance mismatch between the actual and uniform constellations. In addition to exact derivation of the network performance metrics, this study provides insight into selecting the constellation parameters, e.g., the total number of satellites, altitude, and inclination angle.

Global Minimax Approximations and Bounds for the Gaussian Q-Function by Sums of Exponentials

This paper presents a novel systematic methodology to obtain new simple and tight approximations, lower bounds, and upper bounds for the Gaussian Q-function, and functions thereof, in the form of a weighted sum of exponential functions. They are based on minimizing the maximum absolute or relative error, resulting in globally uniform error functions with equalized extrema. In particular, we construct sets of equations that describe the behaviour of the targeted error functions and solve them numerically in order to find the optimized sets of coefficients for the sum of exponentials. This also allows for establishing a trade-off between absolute and relative error by controlling weights assigned to the error functions' extrema. We further extend the proposed procedure to derive approximations and bounds for any polynomial of the Q-function, which in turn allows approximating and bounding many functions of the Q-function that meet the Taylor series conditions, and consider the integer powers of the Q-function as a special case. In the numerical results, other known approximations of the same and different forms as well as those obtained directly from quadrature rules are compared with the proposed approximations and bounds to demonstrate that they achieve increasingly better accuracy in terms of the global error, thus requiring significantly lower number of sum terms to achieve the same level of accuracy than any reference approach of the same form.
