Magnetic flows on 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds via the Rumin complex

We show that the appropriate notion of magnetic field on three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds is given by a closed Rumin differential two-form. We introduce horizontal magnetic flows starting from magnetic potential one-forms, proving that the flow depends only on the Rumin differential of the potential. Notably, in dimension three the Rumin differential acts on one-forms as a second-order differential operator. We further prove that such magnetic flows can be interpreted as a geodesic flow on a suitably lifted sub-Riemannian structure, which is of Engel type when the magnetic field is non-vanishing. In the general case, when the magnetic field may vanish, we analyze the geometry of the lifted structure, characterizing its step and abnormal trajectories in terms of the analytical properties of the magnetic field. Our work is inspired by the classical correspondence, first observed by Montgomery, between Riemannian magnetic flows and sub-Riemannian geometry.

Tubes in sub-Riemannian geometry and a Weyl's invariance result for curves in the Heisenberg groups

The purpose of the paper is threefold: first, we prove optimal regularity results for the distance from $C^k$ submanifolds of general rank-varying sub-Riemannian structures. Then, we study the asymptotics of the volume of tubular neighbourhoods around such submanifolds. Finally, for the case of curves in the Heisenberg groups, we prove a Weyl's invariance result: the volume of small tubes around a curve does not depend on the way the curve is isometrically embedded, but only on its Reeb angle. The proof does not need the computation of the actual volume of the tube, and it is new even for the three-dimensional Heisenberg group.

Steiner and tube formulae in 3D contact sub-Riemannian geometry

We prove a Steiner formula for regular surfaces with no characteristic points in 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with an arbitrary smooth volume. The formula we obtain, which is equivalent to a half-tube formula, is of local nature. It can thus be applied to any surface in a region not containing characteristic points. We provide a geometrical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in the expansion, and compute them on some relevant examples in three-dimensional sub-Riemannian model spaces. These results generalize those obtained in 10.1016/j.na.2015.05.006 and arXiv:1703.01592v3 for the Heisenberg group.
