Analysis of a two-fluid Taylor-Couette flow with one non-Newtonian fluid

We study the dynamic behaviour of two viscous fluid films confined between two concentric cylinders rotating at a small relative velocity. It is assumed that the fluids are immiscible and that the volume of the outer fluid film is large compared to the volume of the inner one. Moreover, while the outer fluid is considered to have constant viscosity, the rheological behaviour of the inner thin film is determined by a strain-dependent power-law. Starting from a Navier--Stokes system, we formally derive evolution equations for the interface separating the two fluids. Two competing effects drive the dynamics of the interface, namely, the surface tension and the shear stresses induced by the rotation of the cylinders. When the two effects are comparable, the solutions behave, for large times, as in the Newtonian regime. We also study the regime in which the surface tension effects dominate the stresses induced by the rotation of the cylinders. In this case, we prove local existence of positive weak solutions both for shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids. In the latter case, we show that interfaces which are initially close to a circle converge to a circle in finite time and keep that shape for later times.

On the dynamics of thin layers of viscous flows inside another viscous fluid

In this work we will study the dynamics of a thin layer of a viscous fluid which is embedded in the interior of another viscous fluid. The resulting flow can be approximated by means of the solutions of a free boundary problem for the Stokes equation in which one of the unknowns is the shape of a curve which approximates the geometry of the thin layer of fluid. We also derive the equation yielding the thickness of this fluid. This model, that will be termed as the Geometric Free Boundary Problem, will be derived using matched asymptotic expansions. We will prove that the Geometric Free Boundary Problem is well posed and the solutions of the thickness equation are well defined (in particular they do not yield breaking of fluid layers) as long as the solutions of the Geometric Free Boundary Problem exist.

Analysis of a thin film approximation for two-fluid Taylord-Couette flows

In this work we study the evolution of the interface between two different fluids in two concentric cylinders when the velocity is given by the Navier-Stokes equation and one of the fluids is thin. We present a formal asymptotic derivation of the evolution equation for the interface under different scaling assumptions for the surface tension. We then study the different types of the stationary solutions and travelling waves for the resulting equation. In particular, we state a global well posedness result and using Center Manifold Theory, we obtain detailed information about the long time asymptotics of the solutions of the problem.

Local-existence for the Inhomogeneous Muskat problem

In this work we study the evolution of the interface between two different fluids in a porous media with two different permeabilities. We prove local existence in Sobolev spaces, when the free boundary is given by the discontinuity among the densities and viscosities of the fluids.

Non-splat singularity for the one-phase Muskat problem

For the water waves equations, the existence of splat singularities has been shown in [3], i.e., the interface self-intersects along an arc in finite time. The aim of this paper is to show the absence of splat singularities for the incompressible fluid dynamics in porous media.

Variational approach to second-order impulsive dynamic equations on time scales

The aim of this paper is to employ variational techniques and critical point theory to prove some conditions for the existence of solutions to nonlinear impulsive dynamic equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Also we will be interested in the solutions of the impulsive nonlinear problem with linear derivative dependence satisfying an impulsive condition.
