Prospects of Heavy Neutrino Searches at Future Lepton Colliders

We discuss the future prospects of heavy neutrino searches at next generation lepton colliders. In particular, we focus on the planned electron-positron colliders, operating in two different beam modes, namely, $e^+e^-$ and $e^-e^-$. In the $e^+e^-$ beam mode, we consider various production and decay modes of the heavy neutrino ($N$), and find that the final state with $e+2j+{E\!\!\!/}_T$, arising from the $e^+e^-\to Nν$ production mode, is the most promising channel. However, since this mode is insensitive to the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos, we also study a new production channel $e^+e^-\to Ne^\pm W^\mp$, which leads to a same-sign dilepton plus four jet final state, thus directly probing the lepton number violation in $e^+e^-$ colliders. In the $e^-e^-$ beam mode, we study the prospects of the lepton number violating process of $e^-e^-\to W^-W^-$, mediated by a heavy Majorana neutrino. We use both cut-based and multivariate analysis techniques to make a realistic calculation of the relevant signal and background events, including detector effects for a generic linear collider detector. We find that with the cut-based analysis, the light-heavy neutrino mixing parameter $|V_{eN}|^2$ can be probed down to $\sim 10^{-4}$ at 95\% C.L. for the heavy neutrino mass up to $400$ GeV or so at $\sqrt s=500$ GeV with $100 \rm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. For smaller mixing values, we show that a multivariate analysis can improve the signal significance by up to an order of magnitude. These limits will be at least an order of magnitude better than the current best limits from electroweak precision data, as well as the projected limits from $\sqrt s=14$ TeV LHC.

Cornering dimension-6 $HVV$ interactions at high luminosity LHC: the role of event ratios

We suggest a way of improving the probes on dimension-6 CP-conserving $HVV$ interactions ($V$ = $W$, $Z$, $γ$), from the LHC data on the Higgs boson to be available in the 14 TeV run with an integrated luminosity of $3000$ fb$^{-1}$. We find that the ratios of total rates in different channels can be quite useful in this respect. This includes ratios of event rates in (a) different final states for the Higgs produced by the same production mechanism, and (b) the same final state from two different production modes. While most theoretical uncertainties cancel in the former, the latter helps in the case of those operators which shift the numerator and denominator in opposite directions. Our analysis, incorporating theoretical, systematic and statistical uncertain, leads to projected limits that are better than the strongest ones obtained so far from precision electroweak as well as LHC Higgs data. Moreover, values of the coefficients of the dimension-6 operators, which are allowed in disjoint intervals, can have their ranges narrowed down substantially in our approach.

Single Productions of Colored Particles at the LHC: An Example with Scalar Leptoquarks

Current LHC searches for new colored particles generally focus on their pair production channels and assume any single production to be negligible. We argue that such an assumption may be unnecessary in some cases. Inclusion of model dependent single productions in pair production searches (or vice versa) can give us new information about model parameters or better exclusion limits. Considering the example of the recent CMS search for first generation scalar leptoquarks in the pair production channel, we illustrate how single productions can be systematically included in the signal estimations and demonstrate how it can affect the mass exclusion limits and give new bounds on leptoquark-lepton-quark couplings. We also estimate the effect of the pair production in the more recent CMS search for scalar leptoquarks in single production channels.

Exploration of the Tensor Structure of the Higgs Boson Coupling to Weak Bosons in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

Probing signatures of anomalous interactions of the Higgs boson with pairs of weak vector bosons is an important goal of an $e^+e^-$ collider commissioned as a Higgs factory. We perform a detailed analysis of such potential of a collider operating at $250 - 300$ GeV. Mostly using higher dimensional operators in a gauge-invariant framework, we show that substantial information on anomalous couplings can be extracted from the total rates of $s$-and $t$-channel Higgs production. The most obvious kinematic distributions, based on angular dependence of matrix elements, are relatively less sensitive with moderate coefficients of anomalous couplings, unless one goes to higher centre-of-mass energies. Some important quantities to use here, apart from the total event rates, are the ratios of event rates at different energies, ratios of $s$ and $t$-channel rates at fixed energies, and under some fortunate circumstances, the correlated changes in the rates for $W$-boson pair-production. A general scheme of calculating rates with as many as four gauge-invariant operators is also outlined. At the end, we perform a likelihood analysis using phenomenological parametrization of anomalous $HWW$ interaction, and indicate their distinguishability for illustrative values of the strength of such interactions.

Coupling Extraction From Off-Shell Cross-sections

In this note, we present a novel method of extracting the couplings of a new heavy particle to the Standard Model states. Contrary to the usual discovery process which involves studying the on-shell production, we look at regions away from resonance to take advantage of the simple scaling of the cross-section with the couplings. We apply the procedure to the case of a heavy quark as an illustration.

LHC Signatures of Warped-space Vectorlike Quarks

We study the LHC signatures of TeV scale vectorlike quarks $b'$, $t'$ and $χ$ with electromagnetic charges -1/3, 2/3 and 5/3 that appear in many beyond the standard model (BSM) extensions. We consider warped extra-dimensional models and analyze the phenomenology of such vectorlike quarks that are the custodial partners of third generation quarks. In addition to the usually studied pair-production channels which depend on the strong coupling, we put equal emphasis on single production channels that depend on electroweak couplings and on electroweak symmetry breaking induced mixing effects between the heavy vectorlike quarks and standard model quarks. We identify new promising $gg$-initiated pair and single production channels and find the luminosity required for discovering these states at the LHC. For these channels, we propose a cut that allows one to extract the relevant electroweak couplings. Although the motivation is from warped models, we present many of our results model-independently.

Warped Extra Dimensional Benchmarks for Snowmass 2013

The framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in it is a very well-motivated extension of the SM since it can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. We consider signals at the 14 and 33 TeV large hadron collider (LHC) resulting from the direct production of the new particles in this framework, i.e.,Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the SM particles. We focus on spin-1 (gauge boson) and spin-2 (graviton) KK particles and their decays to top/bottom quarks (flavor-conserving) and W/Z and Higgs bosons, in particular. We propose two benchmarks for this purpose, with the right-handed (RH) or LH top quark, respectively, being localized very close to the TeV end of the extra dimension. We present some new results at the 14 TeV (with 300 fb$^-1$ and 3000 fb$^-1$) and 33 TeV LHC. We find that the prospects for discovery of these particles are quite promising, especially at the high-luminosity upgrade.

Graviton Signals in Central Production at the LHC

In this paper, we study central production, in the inclusive case, to look for graviton signals in large extra dimensional model using dilepton and diphoton channels. We carefully analyze signal and possible Standard Model background processes and study the feasibility of such new physics searches in a relatively clean environment as in central production where the proton fragments are mostly emitted in the forward direction, and there is a clear rapidity gap between them and the centrally produced system. Our analysis shows that the LHC with 14 TeV center of mass energy and 100 fb$^{-1}$ (300 fb$^{-1}$) of integrated luminosity can probe the effective gravity scale up to 3.6 TeV (4.4 TeV) in both the dilepton and diphoton channels.

Probing Color Octet Electrons at the LHC

Models with quark and lepton compositeness predict the existence of colored partners of the Standard Model leptons. In this paper we study the LHC phenomenology of a charged colored lepton partner, namely the color octet electron, $e_8$ in an effective theory framework. We explore various mechanisms for resonant production of $e_8$'s. With the pair production channel the 14 TeV LHC can probe $e_8$'s with masses up to 2.5 TeV (2.8 TeV) with 100 fb$^{-1}$ (300 fb$^{-1}$) of integrated luminosity. A common feature in all the resonant production channels is the presence of two high $p_T$ electrons and at least one high $p_T$ jet in the final state. Using this feature, we implement a search method where the signal is a combination of pair and single production events. This method has potential to increase the LHC reach significantly. Using the combined signal we estimate the LHC discovery potential for the $e_8$'s. Our analysis shows that the LHC with 14 TeV center-of-mass energy and 100 fb$^{-1}$ (300 fb$^{-1}$) of integrated luminosity can probe $e_8$'s with masses up to 3.4 TeV (4 TeV) for the compositeness scale of 5 TeV.

LHC Signatures of a Vector-like b'

Many beyond the standard model extensions predict the existence of heavy vector-like fermions. We study the LHC signatures of one such heavy vector-like fermion, called b', with electromagnetic charge -1/3 like the SM b-quark, but which could generically have different SU(2)_L and U(1)_Y quantum numbers. Our emphasis will be on the phenomenology due to b <-> b' mass-mixing, present after electroweak symmetry breaking. We focus on aspects which distinguish a vector-like b' from a chiral b' and include tree-level decays of the b' into t W, b Z and b h final states. While our analysis is largely model-independent, we take as a motivating example warped-space models in which a vector-like b' appears as the custodial partner of the top-quark.

Chiral and Diquark condensates at large magnetic field in two-flavor superconducting quark matter

We study the effect of a large magnetic field on the chiral and diquark condensates in a regime of moderately dense quark matter. Our focus is on the inter-dependence of the two condensates through non-perturbative quark mass and strong coupling effects, which we address in a 2-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. For magnetic fields $eB\lesssim 0.01$ GeV$^2$ (corresponding to $B\lesssim 10^{18}$G), our results agree qualitatively with the zero-field study of Huang et al., who found a mixed broken phase region where the chiral and superconducting gap are both non-zero. For $eB\gtrsim 0.01$ GeV$^2$ and moderate diquark-to-scalar coupling ratio $G_D/G_S$, we find that the chiral and superconducting transitions become weaker but with little change in either transition density. For large $G_D/G_S$ however, such a large magnetic field disrupts the mixed broken phase region and changes a smooth crossover found in the zero-field case to a first-order transition at neutron star interior densities.
