A System for General In-Hand Object Re-Orientation

In-hand object reorientation has been a challenging problem in robotics due to high dimensional actuation space and the frequent change in contact state between the fingers and the objects. We present a simple model-free framework that can learn to reorient objects with both the hand facing upwards and downwards. We demonstrate the capability of reorienting over 2000 geometrically different objects in both cases. The learned policies show strong zero-shot transfer performance on new objects. We provide evidence that these policies are amenable to real-world operation by distilling them to use observations easily available in the real world. The videos of the learned policies are available at: https://taochenshh.github.io/projects/in-hand-reorientation.

Path-optimized nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation on superconducting qubits

Quantum computation based on nonadiabatic geometric phases has attracted a broad range of interests, due to its fast manipulation and inherent noise resistance. However, it is limited to some special evolution paths, and the gate-times are typically longer than conventional dynamical gates, resulting in weakening of robustness and more infidelities of the implemented geometric gates. Here, we propose a path-optimized scheme for geometric quantum computation on superconducting transmon qubits, where high-fidelity and robust universal nonadiabatic geometric gates can be implemented, based on conventional experimental setups. Specifically, we find that, by selecting appropriate evolution paths, the constructed geometric gates can be superior to their corresponding dynamical ones under different local errors. Numerical simulations show that the fidelities for single-qubit geometric Phase, $π/8$ and Hadamard gates can be obtained as $99.93\%$, $99.95\%$ and $99.95\%$, respectively. Remarkably, the fidelity for two-qubit control-phase gate can be as high as $99.87\%$. Therefore, our scheme provides a new perspective for geometric quantum computation, making it more promising in the application of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Learning to Jump from Pixels

Today's robotic quadruped systems can robustly walk over a diverse range of rough but continuous terrains, where the terrain elevation varies gradually. Locomotion on discontinuous terrains, such as those with gaps or obstacles, presents a complementary set of challenges. In discontinuous settings, it becomes necessary to plan ahead using visual inputs and to execute agile behaviors beyond robust walking, such as jumps. Such dynamic motion results in significant motion of onboard sensors, which introduces a new set of challenges for real-time visual processing. The requirement for agility and terrain awareness in this setting reinforces the need for robust control. We present Depth-based Impulse Control (DIC), a method for synthesizing highly agile visually-guided locomotion behaviors. DIC affords the flexibility of model-free learning but regularizes behavior through explicit model-based optimization of ground reaction forces. We evaluate the proposed method both in simulation and in the real world.

Fine-grained Identity Preserving Landmark Synthesis for Face Reenactment

Recent face reenactment works are limited by the coarse reference landmarks, leading to unsatisfactory identity preserving performance due to the distribution gap between the manipulated landmarks and those sampled from a real person. To address this issue, we propose a fine-grained identity-preserving landmark-guided face reenactment approach. The proposed method has two novelties. First, a landmark synthesis network which is designed to generate fine-grained landmark faces with more details. The network refines the manipulated landmarks and generates a smooth and gradually changing face landmark sequence with good identity preserving ability. Second, several novel loss functions including synthesized face identity preserving loss, foreground/background mask loss as well as boundary loss are designed, which aims at synthesizing clear and sharp high-quality faces. Experiments are conducted on our self-collected BeautySelfie and the public VoxCeleb1 datasets. The presented qualitative and quantitative results show that our method can reenact fine-grained higher quality faces with good ID-preserved appearance details, fewer artifacts and clearer boundaries than state-of-the-art works. Code will be released for reproduction.

Sketch Me A Video

Video creation has been an attractive yet challenging task for artists to explore. With the advancement of deep learning, recent works try to utilize deep convolutional neural networks to synthesize a video with the aid of a guiding video, and have achieved promising results. However, the acquisition of guiding videos, or other forms of guiding temporal information is costly expensive and difficult in reality. Therefore, in this work we introduce a new video synthesis task by employing two rough bad-drwan sketches only as input to create a realistic portrait video. A two-stage Sketch-to-Video model is proposed, which consists of two key novelties: 1) a feature retrieve and projection (FRP) module, which parititions the input sketch into different parts and utilizes these parts for synthesizing a realistic start or end frame and meanwhile generating rich semantic features, is designed to alleviate the sketch out-of-domain problem due to arbitrarily drawn free-form sketch styles by different users. 2) A motion projection followed by feature blending module, which projects a video (used only in training phase) into a motion space modeled by normal distribution and blends the motion variables with semantic features extracted above, is proposed to alleviate the guiding temporal information missing problem in the test phase. Experiments conducted on a combination of CelebAMask-HQ and VoxCeleb2 dataset well validate that, our method can acheive both good quantitative and qualitative results in synthesizing high-quality videos from two rough bad-drawn sketches.

Ultrafast Holonomic Quantum Gates

Quantum computation based on geometric phase is generally believed to be more robust against certain errors or noises than the conventional dynamical strategy. However, the gate error caused by the decoherence effect is inevitable, and thus faster gate operations are highly desired. Here, we propose a nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) scheme with detuned interactions on $Δ$-type three-level system, which combines the time-optimal control technique with the time-independent detuning adjustment to further accelerate universal gate operations, {so that the gate-time can be greatly shortened within the hardware limitation}, and thus high-fidelity gates can be obtained. Meanwhile, our numerical simulations show that the gate robustness is also stronger than previous schemes. Finally, we present an implementation of our proposal on superconducting quantum circuits, with a decoherence-free subspace encoding, based on the experimentally demonstrated parametrically tunable coupling technique, which simplifies previous investigations. Therefore, our protocol provides a more promising alternative for future fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Residual Model Learning for Microrobot Control

A majority of microrobots are constructed using compliant materials that are difficult to model analytically, limiting the utility of traditional model-based controllers. Challenges in data collection on microrobots and large errors between simulated models and real robots make current model-based learning and sim-to-real transfer methods difficult to apply. We propose a novel framework residual model learning (RML) that leverages approximate models to substantially reduce the sample complexity associated with learning an accurate robot model. We show that using RML, we can learn a model of the Harvard Ambulatory MicroRobot (HAMR) using just 12 seconds of passively collected interaction data. The learned model is accurate enough to be leveraged as "proxy-simulator" for learning walking and turning behaviors using model-free reinforcement learning algorithms. RML provides a general framework for learning from extremely small amounts of interaction data, and our experiments with HAMR clearly demonstrate that RML substantially outperforms existing techniques.

UniKeyphrase: A Unified Extraction and Generation Framework for Keyphrase Prediction

Keyphrase Prediction (KP) task aims at predicting several keyphrases that can summarize the main idea of the given document. Mainstream KP methods can be categorized into purely generative approaches and integrated models with extraction and generation. However, these methods either ignore the diversity among keyphrases or only weakly capture the relation across tasks implicitly. In this paper, we propose UniKeyphrase, a novel end-to-end learning framework that jointly learns to extract and generate keyphrases. In UniKeyphrase, stacked relation layer and bag-of-words constraint are proposed to fully exploit the latent semantic relation between extraction and generation in the view of model structure and training process, respectively. Experiments on KP benchmarks demonstrate that our joint approach outperforms mainstream methods by a large margin.

Object-aware Long-short-range Spatial Alignment for Few-Shot Fine-Grained Image Classification

The goal of few-shot fine-grained image classification is to recognize rarely seen fine-grained objects in the query set, given only a few samples of this class in the support set. Previous works focus on learning discriminative image features from a limited number of training samples for distinguishing various fine-grained classes, but ignore one important fact that spatial alignment of the discriminative semantic features between the query image with arbitrary changes and the support image, is also critical for computing the semantic similarity between each support-query pair. In this work, we propose an object-aware long-short-range spatial alignment approach, which is composed of a foreground object feature enhancement (FOE) module, a long-range semantic correspondence (LSC) module and a short-range spatial manipulation (SSM) module. The FOE is developed to weaken background disturbance and encourage higher foreground object response. To address the problem of long-range object feature misalignment between support-query image pairs, the LSC is proposed to learn the transferable long-range semantic correspondence by a designed feature similarity metric. Further, the SSM module is developed to refine the transformed support feature after the long-range step to align short-range misaligned features (or local details) with the query features. Extensive experiments have been conducted on four benchmark datasets, and the results show superior performance over most state-of-the-art methods under both 1-shot and 5-shot classification scenarios.

Densely Semantic Enhancement for Domain Adaptive Region-free Detectors

Unsupervised domain adaptive object detection aims to adapt a well-trained detector from its original source domain with rich labeled data to a new target domain with unlabeled data. Previous works focus on improving the domain adaptability of region-based detectors, e.g., Faster-RCNN, through matching cross-domain instance-level features that are explicitly extracted from a region proposal network (RPN). However, this is unsuitable for region-free detectors such as single shot detector (SSD), which perform a dense prediction from all possible locations in an image and do not have the RPN to encode such instance-level features. As a result, they fail to align important image regions and crucial instance-level features between the domains of region-free detectors. In this work, we propose an adversarial module to strengthen the cross-domain matching of instance-level features for region-free detectors. Firstly, to emphasize the important regions of image, the DSEM learns to predict a transferable foreground enhancement mask that can be utilized to suppress the background disturbance in an image. Secondly, considering that region-free detectors recognize objects of different scales using multi-scale feature maps, the DSEM encodes both multi-level semantic representations and multi-instance spatial-contextual relationships across different domains. Finally, the DSEM is pluggable into different region-free detectors, ultimately achieving the densely semantic feature matching via adversarial learning. Extensive experiments have been conducted on PASCAL VOC, Clipart, Comic, Watercolor, and FoggyCityscape benchmarks, and their results well demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the domain adaptability of region-free detectors but also outperforms existing domain adaptive region-based detectors under various domain shift settings.

Slices of Parameter Space for Meromorphic Maps with Two Asymptotic Values

This paper is part of a program to understand the parameter spaces of dynamical systems generated by meromorphic functions with finitely many singular values. We give a full description of the parameter space for a specific family based on the exponential function that has precisely two finite asymptotic values and one attracting fixed point. It represents a step beyond the previous work in [GK] on degree 2 rational functions with analogous constraints: two critical values and an attracting fixed point. What is interesting and promising for pushing the general program even further, is that, despite the presence of the essential singularity, our new functions exhibit a dynamic structure as similar as one could hope to the rational case, and that the philosophy of the techniques used in the rational case could be adapted.

An End-to-End Differentiable Framework for Contact-Aware Robot Design

The current dominant paradigm for robotic manipulation involves two separate stages: manipulator design and control. Because the robot's morphology and how it can be controlled are intimately linked, joint optimization of design and control can significantly improve performance. Existing methods for co-optimization are limited and fail to explore a rich space of designs. The primary reason is the trade-off between the complexity of designs that is necessary for contact-rich tasks against the practical constraints of manufacturing, optimization, contact handling, etc. We overcome several of these challenges by building an end-to-end differentiable framework for contact-aware robot design. The two key components of this framework are: a novel deformation-based parameterization that allows for the design of articulated rigid robots with arbitrary, complex geometry, and a differentiable rigid body simulator that can handle contact-rich scenarios and computes analytical gradients for a full spectrum of kinematic and dynamic parameters. On multiple manipulation tasks, our framework outperforms existing methods that either only optimize for control or for design using alternate representations or co-optimize using gradient-free methods.

Observation of topological phase with critical localization in a quasi-periodic lattice

Disorder and localization have dramatic influence on the topological properties of a quantum system. While strong disorder can close the band gap thus depriving topological materials of topological features, disorder may also induce topology from trivial band structures, wherein topological invariants are shared by completely localized states in real space. Here we experimentally investigate a fundamentally distinct scenario where a topological phase is identified in a critically localized regime, with eigenstates neither fully extended nor completely localized. Adopting the technique of momentum-lattice engineering for ultracold atoms, we implement a one-dimensional, generalized Aubry-André model with off-diagonal quasi-periodic disorder in momentum space, and characterize its localization and topological properties through dynamic observables. We then demonstrate the impact of interactions on the critically localized topological state, as a first experimental endeavour toward the clarification of many-body critical phase, the critical analogue of the many-body localized state.

Empower Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction with Collaborative Adversarial Training

With recent advances in distantly supervised (DS) relation extraction (RE), considerable attention is attracted to leverage multi-instance learning (MIL) to distill high-quality supervision from the noisy DS. Here, we go beyond label noise and identify the key bottleneck of DS-MIL to be its low data utilization: as high-quality supervision being refined by MIL, MIL abandons a large amount of training instances, which leads to a low data utilization and hinders model training from having abundant supervision. In this paper, we propose collaborative adversarial training to improve the data utilization, which coordinates virtual adversarial training (VAT) and adversarial training (AT) at different levels. Specifically, since VAT is label-free, we employ the instance-level VAT to recycle instances abandoned by MIL. Besides, we deploy AT at the bag-level to unleash the full potential of the high-quality supervision got by MIL. Our proposed method brings consistent improvements (~ 5 absolute AUC score) to the previous state of the art, which verifies the importance of the data utilization issue and the effectiveness of our method.

CIL: Contrastive Instance Learning Framework for Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction

The journey of reducing noise from distant supervision (DS) generated training data has been started since the DS was first introduced into the relation extraction (RE) task. For the past decade, researchers apply the multi-instance learning (MIL) framework to find the most reliable feature from a bag of sentences. Although the pattern of MIL bags can greatly reduce DS noise, it fails to represent many other useful sentence features in the datasets. In many cases, these sentence features can only be acquired by extra sentence-level human annotation with heavy costs. Therefore, the performance of distantly supervised RE models is bounded. In this paper, we go beyond typical MIL framework and propose a novel contrastive instance learning (CIL) framework. Specifically, we regard the initial MIL as the relational triple encoder and constraint positive pairs against negative pairs for each instance. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework, with significant improvements over the previous methods on NYT10, GDS and KBP.

Dynamics of the meromorphic families $f_λ=λ\tan^p z^q$

This paper continues our investigation of the dynamics of families of transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many singular values all of which are finite. Here we look at a generalization of the family of polynomials $P_a(z)=z^{d-1}(z- \frac{da}{(d-1)})$, the family $f_λ=λ\tan^p z^q$. These functions have a super-attractive fixed point, and, depending on $p$, one or two asymptotic values. Although many of the dynamical properties generalize, the existence of an essential singularity and of poles of multiplicity greater than one implies that significantly different techniques are required here. Adding transcendental methods to standard ones, we give a description of the dynamical properties; in particular we prove the Julia set of a hyperbolic map is either connected and locally connected or a Cantor set. We also give a description of the parameter plane of the family $f_λ$. Again there are similarities to and differences from the parameter plane of the family $P_a$ and again there are new techniques. In particular, we prove there is dense set of points on the boundaries of the hyperbolic components that are accessible along curves and we characterize these points.

Dynamic Language Models for Continuously Evolving Content

The content on the web is in a constant state of flux. New entities, issues, and ideas continuously emerge, while the semantics of the existing conversation topics gradually shift. In recent years, pre-trained language models like BERT greatly improved the state-of-the-art for a large spectrum of content understanding tasks. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to study how these language models can be adapted to better handle continuously evolving web content. In our study, we first analyze the evolution of 2013 - 2019 Twitter data, and unequivocally confirm that a BERT model trained on past tweets would heavily deteriorate when directly applied to data from later years. Then, we investigate two possible sources of the deterioration: the semantic shift of existing tokens and the sub-optimal or failed understanding of new tokens. To this end, we both explore two different vocabulary composition methods, as well as propose three sampling methods which help in efficient incremental training for BERT-like models. Compared to a new model trained from scratch offline, our incremental training (a) reduces the training costs, (b) achieves better performance on evolving content, and (c) is suitable for online deployment. The superiority of our methods is validated using two downstream tasks. We demonstrate significant improvements when incrementally evolving the model from a particular base year, on the task of Country Hashtag Prediction, as well as on the OffensEval 2019 task.

Noncyclic Geometric Quantum Gates with Smooth Paths via Invariant-based Shortcuts

Nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation is dedicated to the realization of high-fidelity and robust quantum gates, which are necessary for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, it is limited by cyclic and mutative evolution path, which usually requires longer gate-time and abrupt pulse control, weakening the gate performance. Here, we propose a scheme to realize geometric quantum gates with noncyclic and nonadiabatic evolution via invariant-based shortcuts, where universal quantum gates can be induced in one step without path mutation and the gate time is also effectively shortened. Our numerical simulations show that, comparing with the conventional dynamical gates, the constructed geometric gates have stronger resistance not only to systematic errors, induced by both qubit-frequency drift and the deviation of the amplitude of the driving fields, but also to environment-induced decoherence effect. In addition, our scheme can also be implemented on a superconducting circuit platform, with the fidelities of single-qubit and two-qubit gates are higher than 99.97$\%$ and 99.84$\%$, respectively. Therefore, our scheme provides a promising way to realize high-fidelity fault-tolerant quantum gates for scalable quantum computation.
