Constraining neutron-star properties with ensembles of thermonuclear bursts: application to SRGA J144459.2-604207

Deducing the properties of the host neutron stars from thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts remains a challenge, due to incomplete data, multidimensional parameter space, and dearth of suitable models and analysis tools. Here we describe further development of the BEANSP package, with a new "ensemble" analysis mode utilising the consistent and regular "clocked" bursting exhibited by some sources. This mode requires only one model evaluation per epoch, and so is much more efficient than the previous "train" mode. We apply the code to the best-known source exhibiting "clocked" bursting, GS 1826-24, utilising a grid of KEPLER models pre-calculated for this purpose, and find good agreement with a previous study. We performed experiments on simulated data, and recovered input parameters related to the burst ignition with reasonable accuracy, but less so for the system distance, emission anisotropy and neutron star mass and radius. Finally, we assembled a set of 14 daily burst epochs covering the 2024 outburst of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SRGA J144459.2-604207, and attempted to constrain the system properties of this object by comparing to SETTLE model predictions. We find reasonably good agreement between the observations and model predictions for a mildly sub-solar fuel composition, with H-fraction $X\approx0.54$ and CNO metallicity $Z_{\rm CNO}\approx0.01$. However, we note that the inferred H-fraction is in excess of the limit of 0.4 established separately, and the adopted model may not provide sufficiently accurate predictions for this burst ignition regime. The inferred distance depends on assumptions about the system inclination and corresponding anisotropy of the persistent emission, and is likely in the range 6-11 kpc. Future applications with more physically realistic models are a promising avenue for this and other sources with H-rich bursts.

Enhancing Flow Matching with A Unified Guidance Framework for Efficient and Robust Speech Synthesis

Flow Matching (FM) has emerged as a powerful paradigm for speech generation but remains constrained by high inference latency and timbre leakage. To address these bottlenecks, we propose a unified guidance framework that enhances generation efficiency and robustness through two complementary strategies. On the data front, we introduce Data-guidance via heterogeneous augmentation, encouraging the model to disentangle linguistic content from acoustic residue. In parallel, we propose an enhanced Model-guidance mechanism that synergizes trajectory rectification with a novel intrinsic guidance objective. This approach distills conditional knowledge into network weights and straightens inference trajectory path, thereby eliminating Classifier-Free Guidance (CFG) overhead. Experiments demonstrate that our framework accelerates inference by nearly three times while effectively improving speaker similarity compared to state-of-the-art baselines.

Few-shot Semantic Encoding and Decoding for Video Surveillance

With the continuous increase in the number and resolution of video surveillance cameras, the burden of transmitting and storing surveillance video is growing. Traditional communication methods based on Shannon's theory are facing optimization bottlenecks. Semantic communication, as an emerging communication method, is expected to break through this bottleneck and reduce the storage and transmission consumption of video. Existing semantic decoding methods often require many samples to train the neural network for each scene, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this study, a semantic encoding and decoding method for surveillance video is proposed. First, the sketch was extracted as semantic information, and a sketch compression method was proposed to reduce the bit rate of semantic information. Then, an image translation network was proposed to translate the sketch into a video frame with a reference frame. Finally, a few-shot sketch decoding network was proposed to reconstruct video from sketch. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved significantly better video reconstruction performance than baseline methods. The sketch compression method could effectively reduce the storage and transmission consumption of semantic information with little compromise on video quality. The proposed method provides a novel semantic encoding and decoding method that only needs a few training samples for each surveillance scene, thus improving the practicality of the semantic communication system.

NTIRE 2025 Challenge on Event-Based Image Deblurring: Methods and Results

This paper presents an overview of NTIRE 2025 the First Challenge on Event-Based Image Deblurring, detailing the proposed methodologies and corresponding results. The primary goal of the challenge is to design an event-based method that achieves high-quality image deblurring, with performance quantitatively assessed using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). Notably, there are no restrictions on computational complexity or model size. The task focuses on leveraging both events and images as inputs for single-image deblurring. A total of 199 participants registered, among whom 15 teams successfully submitted valid results, offering valuable insights into the current state of event-based image deblurring. We anticipate that this challenge will drive further advancements in event-based vision research.

Bifurcated Evolutionary Pathways in Multi-planet Systems Driven by Misaligned Protoplanetary Disks

Stellar obliquities, or spin-orbit angles, prevalent in exoplanet systems, can impose important constraints on their formation and evolution histories. Recent studies suggest that primordial misalignments between protoplanetary disks and stellar spin axes may significantly contribute to these obliquities, as those frequently observed in systems hosting hot Jupiters. In this study, we demonstrate that misaligned protoplanetary disks combined with stellar oblateness drive complex dynamical evolution in planetary systems during their disk dispersal stages. Specifically, we identify bifurcated evolutionary pathways in multi-planet systems: systems with low star-disk misalignment angles ($\psi_{\star0}$) undergo smooth, adiabatic evolution, producing nearly coplanar, low-obliquity configurations; in contrast, systems with high misalignment angles typically experience an abrupt, non-adiabatic transition, leading to large-amplitude libration of mutual planetary inclinations and then triggering chaotic eccentricity excitation. This libration and eccentricity excitation process can propagate inward-outward in compact multi-planet systems, forming an excitation chain that can destabilize the entire system. The non-adiabatic transition arises from the dynamical bifurcation-induced effect, which occurs during disk dissipation when $\psi_{\star0}\gtrsim44.6^\circ$ (for one-planet systems). Our framework predicts that surviving typical compact multi-planet systems originating from misaligned disks evolve toward coplanar, low-obliquity configurations, consistent with observations of Kepler multi-planet systems. These results advance our understanding of planetary dynamics in misaligned disks and their evolutionary outcomes.

A comprehensive study of type I (thermonuclear) bursts in the new transient SRGA J144459.2$-$604207

We report an analysis of Insight-HXMT observations of the newly discovered accreting millisecond pulsar SRGA J144459.2$-$604207. During the outburst, detected in 2024 February by SRG/ART-XC, the broadband persistent spectrum was well fitted by an absorbed Comptonization model. We detected 60 type I X-ray bursts in the Insight-HXMT medium energy (ME) data, and 37 were also detected with the low-energy (LE) telescope. By superimposing the Insight-HXMT/LE/ME/HE light curves of 37 bursts with similar profiles and intensities, we measured a deficit of X-rays in the $40-70$ keV energy band. By analyzing the time-resolved X-ray burst spectra, we determine the mean ratio of persistent to burst flux of $\alpha=71\pm7$. We estimate the average hydrogen mass fraction in the fuel at ignition, as $\bar{X} =0.342\pm0.033$, and constrain the burst fuel composition as $X_0\leq0.4$. We found that 14 out of 60 X-ray bursts exhibited photospheric expansion, and thus we estimated the distance to the source as $10.0\pm0.71$ kpc. Combined with IXPE observations, the burst recurrence time increased from 1.55 to 8 hr as the local mass accretion rate decreased, which can be described as $\Delta T_{\rm rec}\sim \dot{m}^{-0.91\pm0.02}$.

Quenching and recovery of persistent X-ray emission during a superburst in 4U 1820$-$30

We report the superburst from 4U 1820--30 in 2021 observed by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image and Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). During the tail of the superburst, we found that the NICER light curve unexpectedly increased from 1080 to 2204 ${\rm counts~s^{-1}}$ over 6.89 hr. From the time-resolved superburst spectra, we estimated the burst decay time of $\approx2.5$ hr, the ignition column depth of $\approx0.3\times 10^{12}~{\rm g ~cm^{-2}}$, the energy release per unit mass of $\approx2.4\times 10^{17}~{\rm erg~g^{-1}}$, the fluence of $\approx4.1\times 10^{-4}~{\rm erg~cm^{-2}}$, and the total energy release of $\approx3.5\times10^{42}$ erg. Notably, we found a gradual increase in the Componization flux from $8.9\times 10^{-10}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}}$ to the preburst level during the superburst. This increase can be interpreted as a consequence of superburst radiation depleting the inner accretion disk, leading to a near-complete quenching of the persistent emission. As the burst radiation decayed, the inner accretion disk gradually returned to its preburst state, as evidenced by the best-fit spectral parameters. Additionally, we observed a prominent absorption line that exhibited a gravitational redshift, shifting from 4.15 to 3.62 keV during the recovery phase of persistent emission. This absorption feature likely originates from the inner accretion disk rather than from burst emission on the neutron star (NS) surface. The observed changes in the absorption line energy suggest that the inner disk approached the NS to a distance as close as $\approx17$ km.

Sculpting of Exoplanetary Systems Driven by a Misaligned Disk and Stellar Oblateness: Origin of Perpendicular Orbits in HD 3167

A significant proportion of exoplanets have been detected with highly tilted or even polar orbits relative to their host stars' equatorial planes. These unusual orbital configurations are often linked to post-disk secular interactions among multiple bodies. However, many aspects remain elusive. In this study, we investigate the role of disk-induced spin-orbit misalignments in shaping architecture of multi-planet systems, taking into account the combined effect of the host star's oblateness and the full-space disk potential. We demonstrate that large mutual planetary inclinations can arise from a saddle-center bifurcation occurring during the photoevaporation of the disk. This bifurcation triggers an instant, non-adiabatic transition in the planet's libration. Following this process, the orbital evolution diverges into several distinct patterns. Notably, in scenarios involving a near-polar primordial misalignment, the orbit, consistently librating about a coplanar equilibrium axis, can be captured by an orthogonal equilibrium during the decay of the stellar oblateness. However, the orbit will be eventually recaptured by the coplanar equilibrium, aligned or anti-aligned with the orientation of the outer orbit, resulting in either a prograde or retrograde inner-outer orbit configuration. Additionally, general relativity contributes to maintaining eccentricity stability within these dynamic scenarios. Through the proposed mechanism, we can provide a plausible explanation for the unique, near-perpendicular and likely retrograde orbit architecture observed in the HD 3167 system, enhancing our understanding of exoplanetary system dynamics.

Joint Optimization of Buffer Delay and HARQ for Video Communications

To improve the quality of experience (QoE) in video communication over lossy networks, this paper presents a transmission method that jointly optimizes buffer delay and Hybrid Automatic Repeat request (HARQ), referred to as BD-HARQ. This method operates on packet group and employs dynamic buffer delay combined with HARQ strategy for transmission. By defining the QoE based on metrics such as buffer delay, Forward Error Correction (FEC) redundancy, and data recovery rate, the proposed method derives its closed-form expression through rigorous mathematical modeling and analysis. The optimal transmission parameters, i.e., the buffer delay and the FEC redundancy, are then determined and implemented, guaranteeing the real-time performance, transmission efficiency, and data recovery rate of video communication. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method aligns well with its theoretical expectations, and that it can provide up to 13.7% higher QoE compared to existing methods and increase the tolerance for packet loss rate from 15%-22% to up to 31% while maintaining a high QoE.

Several classes of 0-APN power functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$

Recently, the investigation of Partially APN functions has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, with the help of resultant elimination and MAGMA, we propose several new infinite classes of 0-APN power functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{n}}$. By the main result in [4], these $0$-APN power functions are CCZ-inequivalent to the known ones. Moreover, these infinite classes of 0-APN power functions can explain some exponents for $1\leq n\leq11$ which are not yet ``explained" in the tables of Budaghyan et al. [3].

Predicting Peak Day and Peak Hour of Electricity Demand with Ensemble Machine Learning

Battery energy storage systems can be used for peak demand reduction in power systems, leading to significant economic benefits. Two practical challenges are 1) accurately determining the peak load days and hours and 2) quantifying and reducing uncertainties associated with the forecast in probabilistic risk measures for dispatch decision-making. In this study, we develop a supervised machine learning approach to generate 1) the probability of the next operation day containing the peak hour of the month and 2) the probability of an hour to be the peak hour of the day. Guidance is provided on the preparation and augmentation of data as well as the selection of machine learning models and decision-making thresholds. The proposed approach is applied to the Duke Energy Progress system and successfully captures 69 peak days out of 72 testing months with a 3% exceedance probability threshold. On 90% of the peak days, the actual peak hour is among the 2 hours with the highest probabilities.

Efficient Topology Assessment for Integrated Transmission and Distribution Network with 10,000+ Inverter-based Resources

The renewable energy proliferation calls upon the grid operators and planners to systematically evaluate the potential impacts of distributed energy resources (DERs). Considering the significant differences between various inverter-based resources (IBRs), especially the different capabilities between grid-forming inverters and grid-following inverters, it is crucial to develop an efficient and effective assessment procedure besides available co-simulation framework with high computation burdens. This paper presents a streamlined graph-based topology assessment for the integrated power system transmission and distribution networks. Graph analyses were performed based on the integrated graph of modified miniWECC grid model and IEEE 8500-node test feeder model, high performance computing platform with 40 nodes and total 2400 CPUs has been utilized to process this integrated graph, which has 100,000+ nodes and 10,000+ IBRs. The node ranking results not only verified the applicability of the proposed method, but also revealed the potential of distributed grid forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) inverters interacting with the centralized power plants.

Aggregate Queries on Knowledge Graphs: Fast Approximation with Semantic-aware Sampling

A knowledge graph (KG) manages large-scale and real-world facts as a big graph in a schema-flexible manner. Aggregate query is a fundamental query over KGs, e.g., "what is the average price of cars produced in Germany?". Despite its importance, answering aggregate queries on KGs has received little attention in the literature. Aggregate queries can be supported based on factoid queries, e.g., "find all cars produced in Germany", by applying an additional aggregate operation on factoid queries' answers. However, this straightforward method is challenging because both the accuracy and efficiency of factoid query processing will seriously impact the performance of aggregate queries. In this paper, we propose a "sampling-estimation" model to answer aggregate queries over KGs, which is the first work to provide an approximate aggregate result with an effective accuracy guarantee, and without relying on factoid queries. Specifically, we first present a semantic-aware sampling to collect a high-quality random sample through a random walk based on knowledge graph embedding. Then, we propose unbiased estimators for COUNT, SUM, and a consistent estimator for AVG to compute the approximate aggregate results based on the random sample, with an accuracy guarantee in the form of confidence interval. We extend our approach to support iterative improvement of accuracy, and more complex queries with filter, GROUP-BY, and different graph shapes, e.g., chain, cycle, star, flower. Extensive experiments over real-world KGs demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Component Importance and Interdependence Analysis for Transmission, Distribution and Communication Systems

For critical infrastructure restoration planning, the real-time scheduling and coordination of system restoration efforts, the key in decision-making is to prioritize those critical components that are out of service during the restoration. For this purpose, there is a need for component importance analysis. While it has been investigated extensively for individual systems, component importance considering interdependence among transmission, distribution and communication (T&D&C) systems has not been systematically analyzed and widely adopted. In this study, we propose a component importance assessment method in the context of interdependence between T&D&C networks. Analytic methods for multilayer networks and a set of metrics have been applied for assessing the component importance and interdependence between T&D&C networks based on their physical characteristics. The proposed methodology is further validated with integrated synthetic Illinois regional transmission, distribution, and communication (T&D&C) systems, the results reveal the unique characteristics of component/node importance, which may be strongly affected by the network topology and cross-domain node mapping.

Tritium and helium analyses in thin films by enhanced proton backscattering

In order to perform quantitative tritium and helium analysis in thin film sample by using enhanced proton backscattering (EPBS), EPBS spectra for several samples consisting of non-RBS light elements (i.e., T, 4He, 12C, 16O, natSi), medium and heavy elements have been measured and analyzed by using analytical SIMNRA and Monte Carlo-based CORTEO codes. The CORTEO code used in this paper is modified and some non-RBS cross sections of proton scattering from T, 4He, 12C, 14N, 16O and natSi elements taken from ENDF/B-VII.1 database and the calculations of SigmaCalc code are incorporated. All cross section data needed in CORTEO code over the entire proton incident energy-scattering angle plane are obtained by interpolation. It is quantitatively observed that the multiple and plural scattering effects have little impact on energy spectra for light elements like T, He, C, O and Si, and the RBS cross sections of light elements, instead of the non-RBS cross sections, can be used in SIMNRA code for dual scattering calculations for EPBS analysis. It is also observed that at the low energy part of energy spectrum the results given by CORTEO code are higher than the results of SIMNRA code and are in better agreement with the experimental data, especially when heavier elements exist in samples. For tritium analysis, the tritium depth distributions should not be simply adjusted to fit the experimental spectra when the multiple and plural scattering contributions are not completely accounted, or else inaccurate results may be obtained. For medium and heavy matrix elements, when full Monte Carlo RBS calculations are used in CORTEO code, the results from CORTEO code are in good agreement with the experimental results at the low energy part of energy spectra, at this moment quantitative tritium and helium analysis in thin film sample by using enhanced proton backscattering can be performed reliably.
