Evidence of a magnetic Bose glass in IPA-Cu(Cl0.95Br0.05)3 from neutron diffraction

We report the single crystal study of the bulk magnetization and neutron scattering measurements on a quantum S=1/2 spin ladders system IPA-Cu(Cl0.95Br0.05)3with quenched disorder. In zero field, the disordered spin liquid phase is preserved as in pure IPA-CuCl3. Due to the bond randomness, a different Bose glass phase was directly observed in Hc<H<H', which separates the spin liquid phase from the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensation phase. The observed finite value of boson compressibility dM/dH and lack of field-induced three-dimensional long range order are consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2Dioxane.2H2O.CuCl2: metal-organic compound with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chains

A novel organometallic compound 2Dioxane.CuCl2.2H2O has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field inelastic neutron scattering have also been used to study its magnetic properties. It turns out that this material is a weakly coupled one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain system with chain direction along the crystallographic c axis and the nearest-neighbor intra-chain exchange constant J=0.85(4) meV. The next-nearest-neighbor inter-chain exchange constant J' is also estimated to be 0.05 meV. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum from inelastic neutron scattering is in excellent agreement with numerical calculations based on the Muller ansatz.

Realization of Coherent Optically Dense Media via Buffer-Gas Cooling

We demonstrate that buffer-gas cooling combined with laser ablation can be used to create coherent optical media with high optical depth and low Doppler broadening that offers metastable states with low collisional and motional decoherence. Demonstration of this generic technique opens pathways to coherent optics with a large variety of atoms and molecules. We use helium buffer gas to cool 87Rb atoms to below 7 K and slow atom diffusion to the walls. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in this medium allows for 50% transmission in a medium with initial OD >70 and for slow pulse propagation with large delay-bandwidth products. In the high-OD regime, we observe high-contrast spectrum oscillations due to efficient four-wave mixing.

Adiabaticity and localization in one-dimensional incommensurate lattices

We experimentally investigate the role of localization on the adiabaticity of loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into a one-dimensional optical potential comprised of a shallow primary lattice plus one or two perturbing lattice(s) of incommensurate period. We find that even a very weak perturbation causes dramatic changes in the momentum distribution and makes adiabatic loading of the combined lattice much more difficult than for a single period lattice. We interpret our results using a band structure model and the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Effect of pressure on the quantum spin ladder material IPA-CuCl3

Inelastic neutron scattering and bulk magnetic susceptibility studies of the quantum S=1/2 spin ladder system IPA-CuCl3 are performed under hydrostatic pressure. The pressure dependence of the spin gap $Δ$ is determined. At $P=1.5$ GPa it is reduced to $Δ=0.79$ meV from $Δ=1.17$ meV at ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase transition in this system at P$_\mathrm{c}\sim 4$ GPa. The measurements are complicated by a proximity of a structural phase transition that leads to a deterioration of the sample.

Low energy spin waves and magnetic interactions in SrFe$_2$As$_2$

We report inelastic neutron scattering studies of magnetic excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{N}=220$ K), the parent compound of the FeAs-based superconductors. At low temperatures (T=7 K), the spectrum of magnetic excitations $S(Q,\hbar ω)$ consists of a Bragg peak at the elastic position ($\hbar ω=0$ meV), a spin gap ($ Δ\leq 6.5$ meV), and sharp spin wave excitations at higher energies. Based on the observed dispersion relation, we estimate the effective magnetic exchange coupling using a Heisenberg model. On warming across $T_{N} $, the low temperature spin gap rapidly closes, with weak critical scattering and spin-spin correlations in the paramagnetic state. The antiferromagnetic order in SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is therefore consistent with a first order phase transition, similar to the structural lattice distortion.

Neutron scattering from a coordination polymer quantum paramagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported for a powder sample of the spin-1/2 quantum paramagnet $\rm Cu(Quinoxaline)Br_2$. Magnetic neutron scattering is identified above an energy gap of 1.9 meV. Analysis of the sharp spectral maximum at the onset indicates that the material is magnetically quasi-one-dimensional. Consideration of the wave vector dependence of the scattering and polymeric structure further identifies the material as a two-legged spin-1/2 ladder. Detailed comparison of the data to various models of magnetism in this material based on the single mode approximation and the continuous unitary transformation are presented. The latter theory provides an excellent account of the data with leg exchange $J_{\parallel}=2.0$ meV and rung exchange $J_{\perp}=3.3$ meV.

Quasiparticle breakdown in a quantum spin liquid

Much of modern condensed matter physics is understood in terms of elementary excitations, or quasiparticles - fundamental quanta of energy and momentum. Various strongly-interacting atomic systems are successfully treated as a collection of quasiparticles with weak or no interactions. However, there are interesting limitations to this description: the very existence of quasiparticles cannot be taken for granted in some systems. Like unstable elementary particles, quasiparticles cannot survive beyond a threshold where certain decay channels become allowed by conservation laws - their spectrum terminates at this threshold. This regime of quasiparticle failure was first predicted for an exotic state of matter, super-fluid helium-4 at temperatures close to absolute zero - a quantum Bose-liquid where zero-point atomic motion precludes crystallization. Using neutron scattering, here we show that it can also occur in a quantum magnet and, by implication, in other systems with Bose-quasiparticles. We have measured spin excitations in a two dimensional (2D) quantum-magnet, piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate (PHCC) in which spin-1/2 copper ions form a non-magnetic quantum spin liquid (QSL), and find remarkable similarities with excitations measured in superfluid 4He. There is a threshold momentum beyond which the quasiparticle peak merges with the two-quasiparticle continuum. It then acquires a finite energy width and becomes indistinguishable from a leading-edge singularity, so that lowest excited states occupy a wide band of energy. Our findings have important ramifications for understanding phenomena involving excitations with gapped spectra in many condensed matter systems, including high-transition-temperature superconductors.

Optical clocks based on ultra-narrow three-photon resonances in alkaline earth atoms

A sharp resonance line that appears in three-photon transitions between the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0}$ states of alkaline earth and Yb atoms is proposed as an optical frequency standard. This proposal permits the use of the even isotopes, in which the clock transition is narrower than in proposed clocks using the odd isotopes and the energy interval is not affected by external magnetic fields or the polarization of trapping light. The method has the unique feature that the width and rate of the clock transition can be continuously adjusted from the $MHz$ level to sub-$mHz$ without loss of signal amplitude by varying the intensities of the three optical beams. Doppler and recoil effects can be eliminated by proper alignment of the three optical beams or by point confinement in a lattice trap. The three beams can be mixed to produce the optical frequency corresponding to the $^{3}P_{0}$ - $^{1}S_{0}$ clock interval.

Spatial weak-light solitons in an electro-magnetically induced nonlinear waveguide

We show that a weak probe light beam can form spatial solitons in an electro-magnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium composed of four-level atoms and a coupling light field. We find that the coupling light beam can induce a highly controllable nonlinear waveguide and exert very strong effects on the dynamical behavior of the solitons. Hence, in the EIT medium, it is not only possible to produce spatial solitons at very low light intensities but also simultaneously control these solitons by using the coupling-light-induced nonlinear waveguide.

On-demand single-photon state generation via nonlinear absorption

We propose a method for producing on-demand single-photon states based on collision-induced exchanges of photons and unbalanced linear absorption between two single-mode light fields. These two effects result in an effective nonlinear absorption of photons in one of the modes, which can lead to single photon states. A quantum nonlinear attenuator based on such a mechanism can absorb photons in a normal input light pulse and terminate the absorption at a single-photon state. Because the output light pulses containing single photons preserve the properties of the input pulses, we expect this method to be a means for building a highly controllable single photon source.

Temporal Dark Solitons in Nonuniform Bose-Einstein Condensates

We discuss temporal dark solitons in confined nonuniform Bose condensates. As a kind of localized high excitation, these solitons can be viewed as macroscopic quasiparticles, having relative motion to the background condensate. We get an analytic expression for one dark soliton under a slowly varying approximation and discuss its special propagation properties in a nonuniform condensate, then we numerically prove that this approximation is reasonable and this kind of soliton exhibits their propagation properties in the nonuniform condensate. Finally, we simulate the generation of dark-soliton-like pulses in the condensate, and indicate that the excitation experiment, done by Ketterle and co-workers [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 553 (1997)], can also be interpreted in terms of temporal dark soliton.

Enhanced Kerr nonlinearity for self-action via atomic coherence in a four-level atomic system

Enhancement of optical Kerr nonlinearity for self-action by electro-magnetically induced transparency in a four-level atomic system including dephasing between the ground states is studied in detail by solving the density matrix equations for the atomic levels. We discern three major contributions, from energy shifts of the ground states induced by the probe light, to the third-order susceptibility in the four-level system. In this four-level system with the frequency-degenerate probes, quantum interference amongst the three contributions can, not only enhance the third-order susceptibility more effectively than in the three-level system with the same characteristic parameters, but also make the ratio between its real and imaginary part controllable. Due to dephasing between the two ground states and constructive quantum interference, the most effective enhancement generally occurs at an offset that is determined by the atomic transition frequency difference and the coupling Rabi frequency.

Collision Dynamics of Two Bose-Einstein Condensates in the Presence of Raman Coupling

A collision of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of Raman coupling is proposed and studied by numerical simulations. Raman transitions are found to be able to reduce collision-produced irregular excitations by forming a time-averaged attractive optical potential. Raman transitions also support a kind of dark soliton pairs in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Soliton pairs and their remnant single solitons are shown to be controllable by adjusting the initial relative phase between the two colliding condensates or the two-photon detuning of Raman transitions.

Integration Of Visual Inter-word Constraints And Linguistic Knowledge In Degraded Text Recognition

Degraded text recognition is a difficult task. Given a noisy text image, a word recognizer can be applied to generate several candidates for each word image. High-level knowledge sources can then be used to select a decision from the candidate set for each word image. In this paper, we propose that visual inter-word constraints can be used to facilitate candidate selection. Visual inter-word constraints provide a way to link word images inside the text page, and to interpret them systematically.
