See Better Before Looking Closer: Weakly Supervised Data Augmentation Network for Fine-Grained Visual Classification

Data augmentation is usually adopted to increase the amount of training data, prevent overfitting and improve the performance of deep models. However, in practice, random data augmentation, such as random image cropping, is low-efficiency and might introduce many uncontrolled background noises. In this paper, we propose Weakly Supervised Data Augmentation Network (WS-DAN) to explore the potential of data augmentation. Specifically, for each training image, we first generate attention maps to represent the object's discriminative parts by weakly supervised learning. Next, we augment the image guided by these attention maps, including attention cropping and attention dropping. The proposed WS-DAN improves the classification accuracy in two folds. In the first stage, images can be seen better since more discriminative parts' features will be extracted. In the second stage, attention regions provide accurate location of object, which ensures our model to look at the object closer and further improve the performance. Comprehensive experiments in common fine-grained visual classification datasets show that our WS-DAN surpasses the state-of-the-art methods, which demonstrates its effectiveness.

Single-crystal growth and extremely high H_c2 of 12442-type Fe-based superconductor KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2

Millimeter sized single crystals of KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2 were grown using a self-flux method. The chemical compositions and crystal structure were characterized carefully. Superconductivity with the critical transition T_c = 33.5 K was confirmed by both the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moreover, the upper critical field H_c2 was studied by the resistivity measurements under different magnetic fields. A rather steep increase for the in-plane H_c2^ab with cooling, dμ_0H_c2^a/dT|T_c = -50.9 T/K, was observed, indicating an extremely high upper critical field. Possible origins for this behavior were discussed. The findings in our work is a great promotion both for understanding the physical properties and applications of 12442-type Fe-based superconductors.

An Exciton-Polariton Fano Resonance Driven by Second Harmonic Generation

Angle-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectra of ZnO microwires show characteristic Fano resonances in the spectral vicinity of exciton-polariton modes. The output SHG spectra after SHG interacting with exciton polariton shows a resonant enhancement peak accompanied by a suppression dip originating from the constructive and destructive interference respectively. It is demonstrated that the Fano line shape, and thus the Fano asymmetry parameter q, can be tuned by the phase-shift of the two channels. The phase-dependent q was calculated and the model describes our experimental results well. In particular, the phase-to-q relation unveil the crucial information about the dynamics of the system, e.g., defining the line shape of output SHG spectra in a superposition of quantum states.

Weakly Supervised Bilinear Attention Network for Fine-Grained Visual Classification

For fine-grained visual classification, objects usually share similar geometric structure but present variant local appearance and different pose. Therefore, localizing and extracting discriminative local features play a crucial role in accurate category prediction. Existing works either pay attention to limited object parts or train isolated networks for locating and classification. In this paper, we propose Weakly Supervised Bilinear Attention Network (WS-BAN) to solve these issues. It jointly generates a set of attention maps (region-of-interest maps) to indicate the locations of object's parts and extracts sequential part features by Bilinear Attention Pooling (BAP). Besides, we propose attention regularization and attention dropout to weakly supervise the generating process of attention maps. WS-BAN can be trained end-to-end and achieves the state-of-the-art performance on multiple fine-grained classification datasets, including CUB-200-2011, Stanford Car and FGVC-Aircraft, which demonstrated its effectiveness.

Single-Phase High-Entropy Intermetallic Compounds (HEICs): Bridging High-Entropy Alloys and Ceramics

High-entropy intermetallic compounds (HEICs) were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering to fill a knowledge gap between the traditional high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and emerging high-entropy ceramics (HECs). Notably, several four- or five-component equimolar aluminides, such as the B2-phase (Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Mn1/5Cu1/5)Al, have been made into single-phase HEICs for the first time. Thermodynamic modeling and a reversible, temperature-dependent, phase-stability experiment suggest that such B2-phase HEICs are entropy-stabilized phases. The structure of these HEICs resembles that of HECs with high-entropy mixing of four or five elements of nearly equal fractions in one and only one sublattice, but with significant (~10%) anti-site defects (differing from typical HECs). A new phase stability rule for forming single B2-phase HEICs is proposed. Five additional HEICs of predominantly D022 phases have also been made. This study broadens the families of equimolar, single-phase, high-entropy materials that have been successfully fabricated.

Unusual evolution of B_{c2} and T_c with inclined fields in restacked TaS_2 nanosheets

Recently we reported an enhanced superconductivity in restacked monolayer TaS_2 nanosheets compared with the bulk TaS_2, pointing to the exotic physical properties of low dimensional systems. Here we tune the superconducting properties of this system with magnetic field along different directions, where a strong Pauli paramagnetic spin-splitting effect is found in this system. Importantly, an unusual enhancement as high as 3.8 times of the upper critical field B_{c2}, as compered with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model and Tinkham model, is observed under the inclined external magnetic field. Moreover, with the out-of-plane field fixed, we find that the superconducting transition temperature T_c can be enhanced by increasing the in-plane field and forms a dome-shaped phase diagram. An extended GL model considering the special microstructure with wrinkles was proposed to describe the results. The restacked crystal structure without inversion center along with the strong spin-orbit coupling may also play an important role for our observations.

Facial Landmarks Detection by Self-Iterative Regression based Landmarks-Attention Network

Cascaded Regression (CR) based methods have been proposed to solve facial landmarks detection problem, which learn a series of descent directions by multiple cascaded regressors separately trained in coarse and fine stages. They outperform the traditional gradient descent based methods in both accuracy and running speed. However, cascaded regression is not robust enough because each regressor's training data comes from the output of previous regressor. Moreover, training multiple regressors requires lots of computing resources, especially for deep learning based methods. In this paper, we develop a Self-Iterative Regression (SIR) framework to improve the model efficiency. Only one self-iterative regressor is trained to learn the descent directions for samples from coarse stages to fine stages, and parameters are iteratively updated by the same regressor. Specifically, we proposed Landmarks-Attention Network (LAN) as our regressor, which concurrently learns features around each landmark and obtains the holistic location increment. By doing so, not only the rest of regressors are removed to simplify the training process, but the number of model parameters is significantly decreased. The experiments demonstrate that with only 3.72M model parameters, our proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Fermi surface with Dirac fermions in CaFeAsF determined via quantum oscillation measurements

Despite the fact that 1111-type iron arsenides hold the record transition temperature of iron-based superconductors, their electronic structures have not been studied much because of the lack of high-quality single crystals. In this study, we completely determine the Fermi surface in the antiferromagnetic state of CaFeAsF, a 1111 iron-arsenide parent compound, by performing quantum oscillation measurements and band-structure calculations. The determined Fermi surface consists of a symmetry-related pair of Dirac electron cylinders and a normal hole cylinder. From analyses of quantum-oscillation phases, we demonstrate that the electron cylinders carry a nontrivial Berry phase $π$. The carrier density is of the order of 10$^{-3}$ per Fe. This unusual metallic state with the extremely small carrier density is a consequence of the previously discussed topological feature of the band structure which prevents the antiferromagnetic gap from being a full gap. We also report a nearly linear-in-$B$ magnetoresistance and an anomalous resistivity increase above about 30 T for $B \parallel c$, the latter of which is likely related to the quantum limit of the electron orbit. Intriguingly, the electrical resistivity exhibits a nonmetallic temperature dependence in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase ($T >$ 118 K), which may suggest an incoherent state. Our study provides a detailed knowledge of the Fermi surface in the antiferromagnetic state of 1111 parent compounds and moreover opens up a new possibility to explore Dirac-fermion physics in those compounds.

EASM: Efficiency-Aware Switch Migration for Balancing Controller Loads in Software-Defined Networking

Distributed multi-controller deployment is a promising method to achieve a scalable and reliable control plane of Software-Defined Networking (SDN). However, it brings a new challenge for balancing loads on the distributed controllers as the network traffic dynamically changes. The unbalanced load distribution on the controllers will increase response delay for processing flows and reduce the controllers'throughput. Switch migration is an effective approach to solve the problem. However, existing schemes focus only on the load balancing performance but ignore migration efficiency, which may result in high migration costs and unnecessary control overheads. This paper proposes Efficiency-Aware Switch Migration (EASM) to balance the controllers'loads and improve migration efficiency. We introduce load difference matrix and trigger factor to measure load balancing on controllers. We also introduce the migration efficiency problem, which considers load balancing rate and migration cost simultaneously to optimally migrate switches. We propose EASM to efficiently solve to the problem. The simulation results show that EASM outperforms baseline schemes by reducing the controller response time by about 21.9%, improving the controller throughput by 30.4% on average, maintaining good load balancing rate, low migration costs and migration time, when the network scale changes.

In situ annealing effects on the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3: A route to improve the crystal quality

We have grown single crystals of the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3, which is superconductive under high pressure, adopting different conditions. By comparing the behaviors of these samples, it is found that the in situ annealing process can affect the crystal structure and the electrical transport, enhance the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, and reduce the extrinsic ferromagnetic component of the system. An in-depth analysis indicates that the crystal quality is improved by the in situ annealing in terms of reducing both the Fe deficiency and the Fe impurity in the samples. The improvement of the sample quality will facilitate the investigations on the intrinsic properties of this material.

Study on the large area MCP-PMT glass radioactivity reduction

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) will install about 18,000 20-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) in the center detector to achieve 3%/sqrt(E(MeV)) energy resolution. From the full detector Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, besides the liquid scitillator (LS) and Acrylic nodes, PMT glass has the largest contribution to the natural radioactive background. Various technologies have been developed in the Chinese industry to control the environment and to improve the production process. We have monitored the glass production for more than two months, and the radioactivity in glass was measured using a low background gamma ray spectrometer equipped with a high resolution HPGe detector. The 238U, 232Th and 40K of the glass bulb are reduced by a factor of 2, 9 and 15 respectively, and now they can reach 2.5 Bq/kg for 238U, 0.5 Bq/kg for 232Th and 0.5 Bq/kg for 40K.

Universal linear-temperature resistivity: possible quantum diffusion transport in strongly correlated superconductors

The strongly correlated electron fluids in high temperature cuprate superconductors demonstrate an anomalous linear temperature ($T$) dependent resistivity behavior, which persists to a wide temperature range without exhibiting saturation. As cooling down, those electron fluids lose the resistivity and condense into the superfluid. However, the origin of the linear-$T$ resistivity behavior and its relationship to the strongly correlated superconductivity remain a mystery. Here we report a universal relation $dρ/dT=(μ_0k_B/\hbar)λ^2_L$, which bridges the slope of the linear-$T$-dependent resistivity ($dρ/dT$) to the London penetration depth $λ_L$ at zero temperature among cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and heavy fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$, where $μ_0$ is vacuum permeability, $k_B$ is the Boltzmann constant and $\hbar$ is the reduced Planck constant. We extend this scaling relation to different systems and found that it holds for other cuprate, pnictide and heavy fermion superconductors as well, regardless of the significant differences in the strength of electronic correlations, transport directions, and doping levels. Our analysis suggests that the scaling relation in strongly correlated superconductors could be described as a hydrodynamic diffusive transport, with the diffusion coefficient ($D$) approaching the quantum limit $D\sim\hbar/m^*$, where $m^*$ is the quasi-particle effective mass.

Voltage-Controllable Colossal Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy in Single Layer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Materials with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy and strong electric field effects are highly needed to develop new types of memory devices based on electric field control of spin orientations. Instead of using modified transition metal films, we propose that certain monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are the ideal candidate materials for this purpose. Using density functional calculations, we show that they exhibit not only a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), but also colossal voltage modulation under external field. Notably, in some materials like CrSe_2 and FeSe_2, where spins show a strong preference for in-plane orientation, they can be switched to out-of-plane direction. This effect is attributed to the large band character alteration that the transition metal d-states undergo around the Fermi energy due to the electric field. We further demonstrate that strain can also greatly change MCA, and can help to improve the modulation efficiency while combined with an electric field.

Microfocus small-angle X-ray scattering at SSRF BL16B1

Offering high-brilliance X-ray beams on micrometer length scales, the microfocus-SAXS at SSRF BL16B1 was established with a KB mirror system for studying small sample volumes, or probing micro-scopic morphologies. The SAXS minimum q value was 0.1nm-1 with a flux of 1.5 * 10^10 photons/s. Two position-resolved scanning experimental methods were combined with microfocus-SAXS that include STXM and CT. To improve the significant smearing effect in the horizontal direction, an effective and easy-to-use desmearing procedure for two-dimensional SAXS pattern based on the blind deconvolution was developed and the deblurring results demonstrated the good restoration effect for the defocus image. Finally, a bamboo sample was selected for SAXS-CT experiment which illustrated the performance of the microfocus-SAXS method.

Strong coupling between Tamm plasmon polariton and two dimensional semiconductor excitons

Two dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) manifest many peculiar physical phenomena in the light-matter interaction. Due to their ultrathin property, strong interaction with light and the robust excitons at room temperature, they provide a perfect platform for studying the physics of strong coupling in low dimension and at room temperature. Here we report the strong coupling between 2D semiconductor excitons and Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPPs). We observe a Rabi splitting of about 54 meV at room temperature by measuring the angle resolved differential reflectivity spectra and simulate the theoretical results by using the transfer matrix method. Our results will promote the realization of the TPP based ultrathin polariton devices at room temperature.

A Hebbian/Anti-Hebbian Network for Online Sparse Dictionary Learning Derived from Symmetric Matrix Factorization

Olshausen and Field (OF) proposed that neural computations in the primary visual cortex (V1) can be partially modeled by sparse dictionary learning. By minimizing the regularized representation error they derived an online algorithm, which learns Gabor-filter receptive fields from a natural image ensemble in agreement with physiological experiments. Whereas the OF algorithm can be mapped onto the dynamics and synaptic plasticity in a single-layer neural network, the derived learning rule is nonlocal - the synaptic weight update depends on the activity of neurons other than just pre- and postsynaptic ones - and hence biologically implausible. Here, to overcome this problem, we derive sparse dictionary learning from a novel cost-function - a regularized error of the symmetric factorization of the input's similarity matrix. Our algorithm maps onto a neural network of the same architecture as OF but using only biologically plausible local learning rules. When trained on natural images our network learns Gabor-filter receptive fields and reproduces the correlation among synaptic weights hard-wired in the OF network. Therefore, online symmetric matrix factorization may serve as an algorithmic theory of neural computation.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

Analysis and perturbation of degree correlation in complex networks

Degree correlation is an important topological property common to many real-world networks. In this paper, the statistical measures for characterizing the degree correlation in networks are investigated analytically. We give an exact proof of the consistency for the statistical measures, reveal the general linear relation in the degree correlation, which provide a simple and interesting perspective on the analysis of the degree correlation in complex networks. By using the general linear analysis, we investigate the perturbation of the degree correlation in complex networks caused by the addition of few nodes and the rich club. The results show that the assortativity of homogeneous networks such as the ER graphs is easily to be affected strongly by the simple structural changes, while it has only slight variation for heterogeneous networks with broad degree distribution such as the scale-free networks. Clearly, the homogeneous networks are more sensitive for the perturbation than the heterogeneous networks.
