Learning Semantic Role Labeling from Compatible Label Sequences

Semantic role labeling (SRL) has multiple disjoint label sets, e.g., VerbNet and PropBank. Creating these datasets is challenging, therefore a natural question is how to use each one to help the other. Prior work has shown that cross-task interaction helps, but only explored multitask learning so far. A common issue with multi-task setup is that argument sequences are still separately decoded, running the risk of generating structurally inconsistent label sequences (as per lexicons like Semlink). In this paper, we eliminate such issue with a framework that jointly models VerbNet and PropBank labels as one sequence. In this setup, we show that enforcing Semlink constraints during decoding constantly improves the overall F1. With special input constructions, our joint model infers VerbNet arguments from given PropBank arguments with over 99 F1. For learning, we propose a constrained marginal model that learns with knowledge defined in Semlink to further benefit from the large amounts of PropBank-only data. On the joint benchmark based on CoNLL05, our models achieve state-of-the-art F1's, outperforming the prior best in-domain model by 3.5 (VerbNet) and 0.8 (PropBank). For out-of-domain generalization, our models surpass the prior best by 3.4 (VerbNet) and 0.2 (PropBank).

Vec-Tok Speech: speech vectorization and tokenization for neural speech generation

Language models (LMs) have recently flourished in natural language processing and computer vision, generating high-fidelity texts or images in various tasks. In contrast, the current speech generative models are still struggling regarding speech quality and task generalization. This paper presents Vec-Tok Speech, an extensible framework that resembles multiple speech generation tasks, generating expressive and high-fidelity speech. Specifically, we propose a novel speech codec based on speech vectors and semantic tokens. Speech vectors contain acoustic details contributing to high-fidelity speech reconstruction, while semantic tokens focus on the linguistic content of speech, facilitating language modeling. Based on the proposed speech codec, Vec-Tok Speech leverages an LM to undertake the core of speech generation. Moreover, Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) is introduced to reduce the token length and bit rate for lower exposure bias and longer context coverage, improving the performance of LMs. Vec-Tok Speech can be used for intra- and cross-lingual zero-shot voice conversion (VC), zero-shot speaking style transfer text-to-speech (TTS), speech-to-speech translation (S2ST), speech denoising, and speaker de-identification and anonymization. Experiments show that Vec-Tok Speech, built on 50k hours of speech, performs better than other SOTA models. Code will be available at https://github.com/BakerBunker/VecTok .

Unravelling the room temperature growth of two-dimensional h-BN nanosheets for multifunctional applications

Room temperature growth of two-dimensional van der Waals (2D-vdW) materials is indispensable for state-of-the-art nanotechnology. The low temperature growth supersedes the requirement of elevated growth temperature accompanied with high thermal budgets. Moreover, for electronic applications, low or room temperature growth reduces the possibility of intrinsic film-substrate interfacial thermal diffusion related deterioration of functional properties and consequent device performance. Here, we demonstrated the growth of ultrawide-bandgap boron nitride (BN) at room temperature by using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process and demonstrated various functionalities for potential applications. Comprehensive chemical, spectroscopic and microscopic characterization confirms the growth of ordered nanosheet-like hexagonal BN. Functionally, nanosheets show hydrophobicity, high lubricity (low coefficient of friction), low refractive index within the visible to near-infrared wavelength range, and room temperature single-photon quantum emission. Our work unveils an important step that brings a plethora of applications potential for room temperature grown h-BN nanosheets as it can be feasible on any given substrate, thus creating a scenario for h-BN on demand at frugal thermal budget.

Strong relevance of Zinc impurity in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kagome quantum antiferromagnets: a variational study

Copper hydroxyhalide materials herbertsmithite ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ and Zn-barlowite ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$FrBr are thought to be the best realizations of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kagome quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model and are widely believed to host a spin liquid ground state. However, the exact nature of such a novel state of matter is still under strong debate, partly due to the complication related to the occupation disorder between the Zinc and the Copper ions in these systems. In particular, recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate that the magnetic response of the Kagome plane is significantly spatial inhomogeneous, even though the content of the misplaced Zinc or Copper ions is believed to be very small. Here we use extensive variational optimization to show that the well known $U(1)$-Dirac spin liquid state is extremely sensitive to the introduction of the nonmagnetic Zinc impurity in the Kagome plane. More specifically, we find that the Zinc impurities can significantly reorganize the local spin correlation pattern around them and induce strong spatial oscillation in the magnetic response of the system. We argue that this is a general trend in highly frustrated quantum magnet systems, in which the nonmagnetic impurity may act as strongly relevant perturbation on the emergent resonating valence bond structure in their spin liquid ground state. We also argue that the strong spatial oscillation in the magnetic response should be attributed to the free moment released by the doped Zinc ions and may serve as the smoking gun evidence for the Dirac node in the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state on the Kagome lattice.

Isomeric excitation of ^{229}\mathrm{Th} via scanning tunneling microscope

The low energy of the isomeric state of the radionuclide thorium-229 (229Th) makes it highly promising for applications in fundamental physics, precision metrology, and quantum technologies. However, directly accessing the isomeric state from its ground state remains a challenge. We propose here a tabletop approach utilizing the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) technique to induce excitation of a single 229Th nucleus. With achievable parameters, the isomeric excitation rate is advantageous over existing methods, allowing the excitation and control of 229Th on the single-nucleus level. It offers the unique potential of exciting and detecting subsequent decay from a single nucleus, providing a new direction for future experimental investigation of the 229Th isomeric state.

HiGNN-TTS: Hierarchical Prosody Modeling with Graph Neural Networks for Expressive Long-form TTS

Recent advances in text-to-speech, particularly those based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), have significantly improved the expressiveness of short-form synthetic speech. However, generating human-parity long-form speech with high dynamic prosodic variations is still challenging. To address this problem, we expand the capabilities of GNNs with a hierarchical prosody modeling approach, named HiGNN-TTS. Specifically, we add a virtual global node in the graph to strengthen the interconnection of word nodes and introduce a contextual attention mechanism to broaden the prosody modeling scope of GNNs from intra-sentence to inter-sentence. Additionally, we perform hierarchical supervision from acoustic prosody on each node of the graph to capture the prosodic variations with a high dynamic range. Ablation studies show the effectiveness of HiGNN-TTS in learning hierarchical prosody. Both objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate that HiGNN-TTS significantly improves the naturalness and expressiveness of long-form synthetic speech.

U-Style: Cascading U-nets with Multi-level Speaker and Style Modeling for Zero-Shot Voice Cloning

Zero-shot speaker cloning aims to synthesize speech for any target speaker unseen during TTS system building, given only a single speech reference of the speaker at hand. Although more practical in real applications, the current zero-shot methods still produce speech with undesirable naturalness and speaker similarity. Moreover, endowing the target speaker with arbitrary speaking styles in the zero-shot setup has not been considered. This is because the unique challenge of zero-shot speaker and style cloning is to learn the disentangled speaker and style representations from only short references representing an arbitrary speaker and an arbitrary style. To address this challenge, we propose U-Style, which employs Grad-TTS as the backbone, particularly cascading a speaker-specific encoder and a style-specific encoder between the text encoder and the diffusion decoder. Thus, leveraging signal perturbation, U-Style is explicitly decomposed into speaker- and style-specific modeling parts, achieving better speaker and style disentanglement. To improve unseen speaker and style modeling ability, these two encoders conduct multi-level speaker and style modeling by skip-connected U-nets, incorporating the representation extraction and information reconstruction process. Besides, to improve the naturalness of synthetic speech, we adopt mean-based instance normalization and style adaptive layer normalization in these encoders to perform representation extraction and condition adaptation, respectively. Experiments show that U-Style significantly surpasses the state-of-the-art methods in unseen speaker cloning regarding naturalness and speaker similarity. Notably, U-Style can transfer the style from an unseen source speaker to another unseen target speaker, achieving flexible combinations of desired speaker timbre and style in zero-shot voice cloning.

Current-driven magnetic resistance in van der Waals spin-filter antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions with MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The field of 2D magnetic materials has paved the way for the development of spintronics and nanodevices with new functionalities. Utilizing antiferromagnetic materials, in addition to layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials, has garnered significant interest. In this work, we present a theoretical investigation of the behavior of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ devices based on the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Our results show that the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics can be influenced significantly by controlling the length of the device and bias voltage and thus allow us to manipulate the tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) with an external bias voltage. This can be further influenced by the presence of the boron nitride layer which shows significantly enhanced TMR by selectively suppressing specific spin channels for different magnetic configurations. By exploiting this mechanism, the observed TMR value reaches up to 3690\%, which can be attributed to the spin-polarized transmission channel and the projected local density of states. Our findings on the influence of structural and magnetic configurations on the spin-polarized transport properties and TMR ratios give the potential implementation of antiferromagnetic vdW layered materials in ultrathin spintronics.

Simulation Guided Molecular Design of Hydrofluoroether Solvent for High Energy Batteries

Electrolyte design is critical for enabling next-generation batteries with higher energy densities. Hydrofluoroether (HFE) solvents have drawn a lot of attention as the electrolytes based on HFEs showed great promise to deliver highly desired properties, including high oxidative stability, ionic conductivity, as well as enhanced lithium metal compatibility. However, the structure-dynamics-properties relationships and design principles for high-performance HFE solvents are still poorly understood. Herein, we proposed four novel asymmetric HFE designs by systematically varying polyether and fluorocarbon structural building blocks. By leveraging molecular dynamics (MD) modeling to analyze the solvation structures and predict the properties of the corresponding 1 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) solutions, we downselected the most promising candidate based on high conductivity, solvation species distribution, and oxidative stability for extensive electrochemical characterizations. The formulated electrolyte demonstrated properties consistent with the predictions from the simulations and showed much-improved capacity retention as well as Coulombic efficiency compared to the baseline electrolytes when cycled in lithium metal cells. This work exemplifies the construction of candidate electrolytes from building block functional moieties to engineer fundamental solvation structures for desired electrolyte properties and guide the discovery and rational design of new solvent materials.

Decision-Dominant Strategic Defense Against Lateral Movement for 5G Zero-Trust Multi-Domain Networks

Multi-domain warfare is a military doctrine that leverages capabilities from different domains, including air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace, to create a highly interconnected battle network that is difficult for adversaries to disrupt or defeat. However, the adoption of 5G technologies on battlefields presents new vulnerabilities due to the complexity of interconnections and the diversity of software, hardware, and devices from different supply chains. Therefore, establishing a zero-trust architecture for 5G-enabled networks is crucial for continuous monitoring and fast data analytics to protect against targeted attacks. To address these challenges, we propose a proactive end-to-end security scheme that utilizes a 5G satellite-guided air-ground network. Our approach incorporates a decision-dominant learning-based method that can thwart the lateral movement of adversaries targeting critical assets on the battlefield before they can conduct reconnaissance or gain necessary access or credentials. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our game-theoretic design, which uses a meta-learning framework to enable zero-trust monitoring and decision-dominant defense against attackers in emerging multi-domain battlefield networks.

Investigating Shift Equivalence of Convolutional Neural Networks in Industrial Defect Segmentation

In industrial defect segmentation tasks, while pixel accuracy and Intersection over Union (IoU) are commonly employed metrics to assess segmentation performance, the output consistency (also referred to equivalence) of the model is often overlooked. Even a small shift in the input image can yield significant fluctuations in the segmentation results. Existing methodologies primarily focus on data augmentation or anti-aliasing to enhance the network's robustness against translational transformations, but their shift equivalence performs poorly on the test set or is susceptible to nonlinear activation functions. Additionally, the variations in boundaries resulting from the translation of input images are consistently disregarded, thus imposing further limitations on the shift equivalence. In response to this particular challenge, a novel pair of down/upsampling layers called component attention polyphase sampling (CAPS) is proposed as a replacement for the conventional sampling layers in CNNs. To mitigate the effect of image boundary variations on the equivalence, an adaptive windowing module is designed in CAPS to adaptively filter out the border pixels of the image. Furthermore, a component attention module is proposed to fuse all downsampled features to improve the segmentation performance. The experimental results on the micro surface defect (MSD) dataset and four real-world industrial defect datasets demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits higher equivalence and segmentation performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Our code will be available at https://github.com/xiaozhen228/CAPS.

Spiking-Diffusion: Vector Quantized Discrete Diffusion Model with Spiking Neural Networks

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have tremendous potential for energy-efficient neuromorphic chips due to their binary and event-driven architecture. SNNs have been primarily used in classification tasks, but limited exploration on image generation tasks. To fill the gap, we propose a Spiking-Diffusion model, which is based on the vector quantized discrete diffusion model. First, we develop a vector quantized variational autoencoder with SNNs (VQ-SVAE) to learn a discrete latent space for images. In VQ-SVAE, image features are encoded using both the spike firing rate and postsynaptic potential, and an adaptive spike generator is designed to restore embedding features in the form of spike trains. Next, we perform absorbing state diffusion in the discrete latent space and construct a spiking diffusion image decoder (SDID) with SNNs to denoise the image. Our work is the first to build the diffusion model entirely from SNN layers. Experimental results on MNIST, FMNIST, KMNIST, Letters, and Cifar10 demonstrate that Spiking-Diffusion outperforms the existing SNN-based generation model. We achieve FIDs of 37.50, 91.98, 59.23, 67.41, and 120.5 on the above datasets respectively, with reductions of 58.60\%, 18.75\%, 64.51\%, 29.75\%, and 44.88\% in FIDs compared with the state-of-art work. Our code will be available at \url{https://github.com/Arktis2022/Spiking-Diffusion}.

Structural, optical, and thermal properties of BN thin films grown on diamond via pulsed laser deposition

Heterostructures based on ultrawide-bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors (bandgap >4.0 eV), boron nitride (BN) and diamond are important for next-generation high-power electronics. However, in-situ hetero-epitaxy of BN/diamond or vice-versa remains extremely challenging, due to their non-trivial growth kinetics. Here, we have grown BN thin film on (100) single crystal diamond by pulsed laser deposition and investigated its structural and magnetic properties, optical refractive index, and thermal conductivity. Structural characterizations confirm the mixed (stable hexagonal and metastable cubic) phase growth. Film shows diamagnetic behavior at room temperature. It displays anisotropic refractive index within the visible-to-near-infrared wavelength range. The room temperature cross-plane thermal conductivity of BN is ~1.53 W/(mK), and the thermal conductance of the BN/diamond interface is ~20 MW/(m2K). Our findings are useful for various device related applications based on UWBG BN/diamond heterostructures.

MSM-VC: High-fidelity Source Style Transfer for Non-Parallel Voice Conversion by Multi-scale Style Modeling

In addition to conveying the linguistic content from source speech to converted speech, maintaining the speaking style of source speech also plays an important role in the voice conversion (VC) task, which is essential in many scenarios with highly expressive source speech, such as dubbing and data augmentation. Previous work generally took explicit prosodic features or fixed-length style embedding extracted from source speech to model the speaking style of source speech, which is insufficient to achieve comprehensive style modeling and target speaker timbre preservation. Inspired by the style's multi-scale nature of human speech, a multi-scale style modeling method for the VC task, referred to as MSM-VC, is proposed in this paper. MSM-VC models the speaking style of source speech from different levels. To effectively convey the speaking style and meanwhile prevent timbre leakage from source speech to converted speech, each level's style is modeled by specific representation. Specifically, prosodic features, pre-trained ASR model's bottleneck features, and features extracted by a model trained with a self-supervised strategy are adopted to model the frame, local, and global-level styles, respectively. Besides, to balance the performance of source style modeling and target speaker timbre preservation, an explicit constraint module consisting of a pre-trained speech emotion recognition model and a speaker classifier is introduced to MSM-VC. This explicit constraint module also makes it possible to simulate the style transfer inference process during the training to improve the disentanglement ability and alleviate the mismatch between training and inference. Experiments performed on the highly expressive speech corpus demonstrate that MSM-VC is superior to the state-of-the-art VC methods for modeling source speech style while maintaining good speech quality and speaker similarity.

DiCLET-TTS: Diffusion Model based Cross-lingual Emotion Transfer for Text-to-Speech -- A Study between English and Mandarin

While the performance of cross-lingual TTS based on monolingual corpora has been significantly improved recently, generating cross-lingual speech still suffers from the foreign accent problem, leading to limited naturalness. Besides, current cross-lingual methods ignore modeling emotion, which is indispensable paralinguistic information in speech delivery. In this paper, we propose DiCLET-TTS, a Diffusion model based Cross-Lingual Emotion Transfer method that can transfer emotion from a source speaker to the intra- and cross-lingual target speakers. Specifically, to relieve the foreign accent problem while improving the emotion expressiveness, the terminal distribution of the forward diffusion process is parameterized into a speaker-irrelevant but emotion-related linguistic prior by a prior text encoder with the emotion embedding as a condition. To address the weaker emotional expressiveness problem caused by speaker disentanglement in emotion embedding, a novel orthogonal projection based emotion disentangling module (OP-EDM) is proposed to learn the speaker-irrelevant but emotion-discriminative embedding. Moreover, a condition-enhanced DPM decoder is introduced to strengthen the modeling ability of the speaker and the emotion in the reverse diffusion process to further improve emotion expressiveness in speech delivery. Cross-lingual emotion transfer experiments show the superiority of DiCLET-TTS over various competitive models and the good design of OP-EDM in learning speaker-irrelevant but emotion-discriminative embedding.

The Confluence of Networks, Games and Learning

Recent years have witnessed significant advances in technologies and services in modern network applications, including smart grid management, wireless communication, cybersecurity as well as multi-agent autonomous systems. Considering the heterogeneous nature of networked entities, emerging network applications call for game-theoretic models and learning-based approaches in order to create distributed network intelligence that responds to uncertainties and disruptions in a dynamic or an adversarial environment. This paper articulates the confluence of networks, games and learning, which establishes a theoretical underpinning for understanding multi-agent decision-making over networks. We provide an selective overview of game-theoretic learning algorithms within the framework of stochastic approximation theory, and associated applications in some representative contexts of modern network systems, such as the next generation wireless communication networks, the smart grid and distributed machine learning. In addition to existing research works on game-theoretic learning over networks, we highlight several new angles and research endeavors on learning in games that are related to recent developments in artificial intelligence. Some of the new angles extrapolate from our own research interests. The overall objective of the paper is to provide the reader a clear picture of the strengths and challenges of adopting game-theoretic learning methods within the context of network systems, and further to identify fruitful future research directions on both theoretical and applied studies.

Commitment with Signaling under Double-sided Information Asymmetry

Information asymmetry in games enables players with the information advantage to manipulate others' beliefs by strategically revealing information to other players. This work considers a double-sided information asymmetry in a Bayesian Stackelberg game, where the leader's realized action, sampled from the mixed strategy commitment, is hidden from the follower. In contrast, the follower holds private information about his payoff. Given asymmetric information on both sides, an important question arises: \emph{Does the leader's information advantage outweigh the follower's?} We answer this question affirmatively in this work, where we demonstrate that by adequately designing a signaling device that reveals partial information regarding the leader's realized action to the follower, the leader can achieve a higher expected utility than that without signaling. Moreover, unlike previous works on the Bayesian Stackelberg game where mathematical programming tools are utilized, we interpret the leader's commitment as a probability measure over the belief space. Such a probabilistic language greatly simplifies the analysis and allows an indirect signaling scheme, leading to a geometric characterization of the equilibrium under the proposed game model.

Gl-QFOM and Gl-QGMRES: two efficient algorithms for quaternion linear systems with multiple right-hand sides

In this paper, we propose the global quaternion full orthogonalization (Gl-QFOM) and global quaternion generalized minimum residual (Gl-QGMRES) methods, which are built upon global orthogonal and oblique projections onto a quaternion matrix Krylov subspace, for solving quaternion linear systems with multiple right-hand sides. We first develop the global quaternion Arnoldi procedure to preserve the quaternion Hessenberg form during the iterations. We then establish the convergence analysis of the proposed methods, and show how to apply them to solve the Sylvester quaternion matrix equation. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods compared with the traditional Gl-FOM and Gl-GMRES iterations for the real representations of the original linear systems.
