How does Working from Home Affect Developer Productivity? -- A Case Study of Baidu During COVID-19 Pandemic

Nowadays, working from home (WFH) has become a popular work arrangement due to its many potential benefits for both companies and employees (e.g., increasing job satisfaction and retention of employees). Many previous studies have investigated the impact of working from home on the productivity of employees. However, most of these studies usually use a qualitative analysis method such as survey and interview, and the studied participants do not work from home for a long continuing time. Due to the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a large number of companies asked their employees to work from home, which provides us an opportunity to investigate whether working from home affects their productivity. In this study, to investigate the difference of developer productivity between working from home and working onsite, we conduct a quantitative analysis based on a dataset of developers' daily activities from Baidu Inc, one of the largest IT companies in China. In total, we collected approximately four thousand records of 139 developers' activities of 138 working days. Out of these records, 1,103 records are submitted when developers work from home due to COVID-19 pandemic. We find that WFH has both positive and negative impacts on developer productivity in terms of different metrics, e.g., the number of builds/commits/code reviews. We also notice that working from home has different impacts on projects with different characteristics including programming language, project type/age/size. For example, working from home has a negative impact on developer productivity for large projects. Additionally, we find that productivity varies for different developers. Based on these findings, we get some feedbacks from developers of Baidu and understand some reasons why WFH has different impacts on developer productivity.

A short review of the recent progresses in the study of the cuprate superconductivity

The last 15 years have witnessed important progresses in our understanding of the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. There is now strong evidence that the strange metal behavior is induced by the quantum critical fluctuation at the pseudogap end point, where the Fermi surface changes its topology from hole-like to electron-like. However, experiments show that the quantum critical behavior in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is qualitatively different from that observed in the heavy Fermion systems and the iron-based superconductors, in both of which the quantum critical behavior can be attributed to the quantum phase transition toward a symmetry breaking phase. The fact that the pseudogap exists as a spectral gap without a corresponding symmetry breaking order, together with the fact that the strange metal behavior occurs as a quantum critical behavior without a corresponding symmetry breaking phase transition, exposes the central difficulty of the field: the lack of a universal low energy effective theory description of the high-$T_{c}$ phenomenology beyond the Landau paradigm. Recent experiments imply that the dualism between the local moment and the itinerant quasiparticle character of the electron in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates may serve as an organizing principle to go beyond the Landau paradigm and may hold the key to the mystery of the pseudogap phenomena and the strange metal behavior.

Locally-Aware Constrained Games on Networks

Network games have been instrumental in understanding strategic behaviors over networks for applications such as critical infrastructure networks, social networks, and cyber-physical systems. One critical challenge of network games is that the behaviors of the players are constrained by the underlying physical laws or safety rules, and the players may not have complete knowledge of network-wide constraints. To this end, this paper proposes a game framework to study constrained games on networks, where the players are locally aware of the constraints. We use \textit{awareness levels} to capture the scope of the network constraints that players are aware of. We first define and show the existence of generalized Nash equilibria (GNE) of the game, and point out that higher awareness levels of the players would lead to a larger set of GNE solutions. We use necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize the GNE, and propose the concept of the dual game to show that one can convert a locally-aware constrained game into a two-layer unconstrained game problem. We use linear quadratic games as case studies to corroborate the analytical results, and in particular, show the duality between Bertrand games and Cournot games.%, where each layer comprises an unconstrained game.

SFE-GACN: A Novel Unknown Attack Detection Method Using Intra Categories Generation in Embedding Space

In the encrypted network traffic intrusion detection, deep learning based schemes have attracted lots of attention. However, in real-world scenarios, data is often insufficient (few-shot), which leads to various deviations between the models prediction and the ground truth. Consequently, downstream tasks such as unknown attack detection based on few-shot will be limited by insufficient data. In this paper, we propose a novel unknown attack detection method based on Intra Categories Generation in Embedding Space, namely SFE-GACN, which might be the solution of few-shot problem. Concretely, we first proposed Session Feature Embedding (SFE) to summarize the context of sessions (session is the basic granularity of network traffic), bring the insufficient data to the pre-trained embedding space. In this way, we achieve the goal of preliminary information extension in the few-shot case. Second, we further propose the Generative Adversarial Cooperative Network (GACN), which improves the conventional Generative Adversarial Network by supervising the generated sample to avoid falling into similar categories, and thus enables samples to generate intra categories. Our proposed SFE-GACN can accurately generate session samples in the case of few-shot, and ensure the difference between categories during data augmentation. The detection results show that, compared to the state-of-the-art method, the average TPR is 8.38% higher, and the average FPR is 12.77% lower. In addition, we evaluated the graphics generation capabilities of GACN on the graphics dataset, the result shows our proposed GACN can be popularized for generating easy-confused multi-categories graphics.

Slow Control System for PandaX-III experiment

The PandaX-III experiment uses high pressure gaseous time projection chamber to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. A modular slow control system~(SCS) has been designed to monitor all the critical parameters of the experiment. It ensures the proper operation of the experiment as well as to provide necessary information for data corrections. The main subsystems of the experiment will be constantly monitored by the data collection module of the SCS, which collects data from sensors and sends them to the centralized database. When an alarm message is generated by the anomaly detection module, it will be sent to an alert website and related on-call experts immediately. A demonstrator of the SCS has been built for the PandaX-III prototype detector. The long-term test of it provided valuable experience for the final design of the SCS for PandaX-III.

A Benchmark of Ocular Disease Intelligent Recognition: One Shot for Multi-disease Detection

In ophthalmology, early fundus screening is an economic and effective way to prevent blindness caused by ophthalmic diseases. Clinically, due to the lack of medical resources, manual diagnosis is time-consuming and may delay the condition. With the development of deep learning, some researches on ophthalmic diseases have achieved good results, however, most of them are just based on one disease. During fundus screening, ophthalmologists usually give diagnoses of multi-disease on binocular fundus image, so we release a dataset with 8 diseases to meet the real medical scene, which contains 10,000 fundus images from both eyes of 5,000 patients. We did some benchmark experiments on it through some state-of-the-art deep neural networks. We found simply increasing the scale of network cannot bring good results for multi-disease classification, and a well-structured feature fusion method combines characteristics of multi-disease is needed. Through this work, we hope to advance the research of related fields.

Resonant Band Engineering of Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions

We propose energy band engineering to enhance tunneling electroresistance (TER) in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs). We predict that an ultrathin dielectric layer with a smaller band gap, embedded into a ferroelectric barrier layer, acts as a switch controlling high and low conductance states of an FTJ depending on polarization orientation. Using first-principles modeling based on density functional theory, we investigate this phenomenon for a prototypical SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 FTJ with a BaSnO3 monolayer embedded in the BaTiO3 barrier. We show that in such a composite-barrier FTJ, ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3 shifts the conduction band minimum of the BaSnO3 monolayer above or below the Fermi energy depending on polarization orientation. The resulting switching between direct and resonant tunneling leads to a TER effect with a giant ON/OFF conductance ratio. The proposed resonant band engineering of FTJs can serve as a viable tool to enhance their performance useful for device application.

Cooperative output feedback tracking control of stochastic linear heterogeneous multi-agent systems

We study cooperative output feedback tracking control of stochastic linear heterogeneous leader-following multi-agent systems. Each agent has a continuous-time linear heterogeneous dynamics with incompletely measurable state, and there are additive and multiplicative noises along with information exchange among agents. We propose a set of admissible distributed observation strategies for estimating the leader's and the followers' states, and a set of admissible cooperative output feedback control strategies based on the certainty equivalence principle. By output regulation theory and stochastic analysis, we show that for observable leader's dynamics and stabilizable and detectable followers' dynamics, if the intensity coefficient of multiplicative noises multiplied by the sum of real parts of the leader' s unstable modes is less than 1/4 of the minimum non-zero eigenvalue of graph Laplacian, then there exist admissible distributed observation and cooperative control strategies to ensure mean square bounded output tracking, provided the associated output regulation equations are solvable. Finally, the effectiveness of our control strategies is demonstrated by a numerical simulation.

Blackwell Online Learning for Markov Decision Processes

This work provides a novel interpretation of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) from the online optimization viewpoint. In such an online optimization context, the policy of the MDP is viewed as the decision variable while the corresponding value function is treated as payoff feedback from the environment. Based on this interpretation, we construct a Blackwell game induced by MDP, which bridges the gap among regret minimization, Blackwell approachability theory, and learning theory for MDP. Specifically, from the approachability theory, we propose 1) Blackwell value iteration for offline planning and 2) Blackwell $Q-$learning for online learning in MDP, both of which are shown to converge to the optimal solution. Our theoretical guarantees are corroborated by numerical experiments.

Decentralized Cooperative Online Estimation With Random Observation Matrices, Communication Graphs and Time Delays

We analyze convergence of decentralized cooperative online estimation algorithms by a network of multiple nodes via information exchanging in an uncertain environment. Each node has a linear observation of an unknown parameter with randomly time-varying observation matrices. The underlying communication network is modeled by a sequence of random digraphs and is subjected to nonuniform random time-varying delays in channels. Each node runs an online estimation algorithm consisting of a consensus term taking a weighted sum of its own estimate and neighbours' delayed estimates, and an innovation term processing its own new measurement at each time step. By stochastic time-varying system, martingale convergence theories and the binomial expansion of random matrix products, we transform the convergence analysis of the algorithm into that of the mathematical expectation of random matrix products. Firstly, for the delay-free case, we show that the algorithm gains can be designed properly such that all nodes' estimates converge to the true parameter in mean square and almost surely if the observation matrices and communication graphs satisfy the stochastic spatiotemporal persistence of excitation condition. Secondly, for the case with time delays, we introduce delay matrices to model the random time-varying communication delays between nodes. It is shown that under the stochastic spatio-temporal persistence of excitation condition, for any given boundeddelays, proper algorithm gains can be designed to guarantee mean square convergence for the case with conditionally balanced digraphs.

P3-LOAM: PPP/LiDAR Loosely Coupled SLAM with Accurate Covariance Estimation and Robust RAIM in Urban Canyon Environment

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has drawn increasing interests in autonomous driving. However, LiDAR-SLAM suffers from accumulating errors which can be significantly mitigated by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Precise Point Positioning (PPP), an accurate GNSS operation mode independent of base stations, gains more popularity in unmanned systems. Considering the features of the two technologies, LiDAR-SLAM and PPP, this paper proposes a SLAM system, namely P3-LOAM (PPP based LiDAR Odometry and Mapping) which couples LiDAR-SLAM and PPP. For better integration, we derive LiDAR-SLAM positioning covariance by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) Jacobian model, since SVD provides an explicit analytic solution of Iterative Closest Point (ICP), which is a key issue in LiDAR-SLAM. A novel method is then proposed to evaluate the estimated LiDAR-SLAM covariance. In addition, to increase the reliability of GNSS in urban canyon environment, we develop a LiDAR-SLAM assisted GNSS Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) algorithm. Finally, we validate P$^3$-LOAM with UrbanNav, a challenging public dataset in urban canyon environment. Comprehensive test results prove that P3-LOAM outperforms benchmarks such as Single Point Positioning (SPP), PPP, LeGO-LOAM, SPP-LOAM, and loosely coupled navigation system proposed by the publisher of UrbanNav in terms of accuracy and availability.

A fully distributed event-triggered communication strategy for second-order multi-agent systems consensus

This paper investigates the communication strategy for second-order multi-agent systems with nonlinear dynamics. To save the scarce resources of communication channels, a novel event-triggered communication mechanism is designed without using continuous signals among the followers. To get rid of the centralized information depending on the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix, a consensus protocol with updated coupling gains and an event-triggered strategy of interagent communication with updated thresholds are presented. To minimize the impacts of noise, only relative positions among agents are employed in the protocol. With the proposed event-triggered mechanism and the control protocol, the leader-following consensus of MASs and no Zeno behavior included are mathematically proven. The results are verified through numerical examples.

Demonstration of imaginary-mass particles by optical simulation in non-Hermitian systems

Unifying quantum mechanics and special relativity, the Dirac equation describes the behaviour of relativistic quantum particles, including imaginary-mass particles with faster-than-light speeds (e.g., tachyon). However, experimental searches for such particles remain negative so far. Fortunately, there are possibilities to investigate the relativistic quantum effects by quantum simulations using a controllable system. However, these simulations are mostly explored in closed physical systems that hinders the demonstration of imaginary-mass particles, whereas the general open framework would promise more possibilities in quantum simulations. Here, we reveal that the dynamic behaviors of imaginary-mass particles can be mapped to the transfer of wave packet in a non-Hermitian silicon optical lattice. We experimentally demonstrate a super-divergent dynamics of tachyon that travels faster than massless particles (e.g., photon). Besides, our simulation suggests another kind of imaginary-mass particles that have rarely been explored, which show non-divergent behaviors with imaginary energy. It is the first experimental quantum simulation being able to observe the imaginary-mass particles that have never been experimentally verified. Our work provides a fully controllable and extensible platform to investigate relativistic quantum phenomena at a chip-scale level, which would inspire more insightful explorations in quantum effects with non-Hermiticity.

Controllable Emotion Transfer For End-to-End Speech Synthesis

Emotion embedding space learned from references is a straightforward approach for emotion transfer in encoder-decoder structured emotional text to speech (TTS) systems. However, the transferred emotion in the synthetic speech is not accurate and expressive enough with emotion category confusions. Moreover, it is hard to select an appropriate reference to deliver desired emotion strength. To solve these problems, we propose a novel approach based on Tacotron. First, we plug two emotion classifiers -- one after the reference encoder, one after the decoder output -- to enhance the emotion-discriminative ability of the emotion embedding and the predicted mel-spectrum. Second, we adopt style loss to measure the difference between the generated and reference mel-spectrum. The emotion strength in the synthetic speech can be controlled by adjusting the value of the emotion embedding as the emotion embedding can be viewed as the feature map of the mel-spectrum. Experiments on emotion transfer and strength control have shown that the synthetic speech of the proposed method is more accurate and expressive with less emotion category confusions and the control of emotion strength is more salient to listeners.

High efficient metasurface quarter-wave plate with wavefront engineering

Metasurfaces with local phase tuning by subwavelength elements promise unprecedented possibilities for ultra-thin and multifunctional optical devices, in which geometric phase design is widely used due to its resonant-free and large tolerance in fabrications. By arranging the orientations of anisotropic nano-antennas, the geometric phase-based metasurfaces can convert the incident spin light to its orthogonal state, and enable flexible wavefront engineering together with the function of a half-wave plate. Here, by incorporating the propagation phase, we realize another important optical device of quarter-wave plate together with the wavefront engineering as well, which is implemented by controlling both the cross- and co-polarized light simultaneously with a singlet metasurface. Highly efficient conversion of the spin light to a variety of linearly polarized light are obtained for meta-holograms, metalens focusing and imaging in blue light region. Our work provides a new strategy for efficient metasurfaces with both phase and polarization control, and enriches the functionalities of metasurface devices for wider application scenarios.

An Empirical-cum-Statistical Approach to Power-Performance Characterization of Concurrent GPU Kernels

Growing deployment of power and energy efficient throughput accelerators (GPU) in data centers demands enhancement of power-performance co-optimization capabilities of GPUs. Realization of exascale computing using accelerators requires further improvements in power efficiency. With hardwired kernel concurrency enablement in accelerators, inter- and intra-workload simultaneous kernels computation predicts increased throughput at lower energy budget. To improve Performance-per-Watt metric of the architectures, a systematic empirical study of real-world throughput workloads (with concurrent kernel execution) is required. To this end, we propose a multi-kernel throughput workload generation framework that will facilitate aggressive energy and performance management of exascale data centers and will stimulate synergistic power-performance co-optimization of throughput architectures. Also, we demonstrate a multi-kernel throughput benchmark suite based on the framework that encapsulates symmetric, asymmetric and co-existing (often appears together) kernel based workloads. On average, our analysis reveals that spatial and temporal concurrency within kernel execution in throughput architectures saves energy consumption by 32%, 26% and 33% in GTX470, Tesla M2050 and Tesla K20 across 12 benchmarks. Concurrency and enhanced utilization are often correlated but do not imply significant deviation in power dissipation. Diversity analysis of proposed multi-kernels confirms characteristic variation and power-profile diversity within the suite. Besides, we explain several findings regarding power-performance co-optimization of concurrent throughput workloads.

These Unprecedented Times: The Dynamic Pattern Of COVID-19 Deaths Around The World

In this article, we deal with COVID-19 data to study the trend of the epidemic at the global situation. Choosing the mortality rate as an appropriate metric which measures the relative relation between the cumulative confirmed cases and death cases, we utilize the modified kernel estimator for random density function (Petersen and Muller, 2016) to obtain the density of the mortality rate, and apply Frechet change point detection (Dubey and Muller, 2020) to check if there is any significant change on the dynamic pattern of COVID-19 deaths. The analysis shows that the pattern of global COVID-19 mortality rate seems to have an obvious change at 104 days after first day when the reported death cases exceed 30. Then we discuss the reasons of abrupt change of mortality rate trend from aspects both subjective and objective.
