Directivity-Beamwidth Tradeoff of Massive MIMO Uplink Beamforming for High Speed Train Communication

High-mobility adaption and massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) application are two primary evolving objectives for the next generation high speed train (HST) wireless communication system. In this paper, we consider how to design a location-aware beamforming for the massive MIMO system in the high traffic density HST network. We first analyze the tradeoff between beam directivity and beamwidth, based on which we present the sensitivity analysis of positioning accuracy. Then, in order to guarantee a high efficient transmission, we derive an optimal problem to maximize the beam directivity under the restriction of diverse positioning accuracies. After that, we present a low-complexity beamforming design by utilizing location information, which requires neither eigen-decomposing (ED) the uplink channel covariance matrix (CCM) nor ED the downlink CCM (DCCM). Finally, we study the beamforming scheme in future high traffic density HST network, where a two HSTs encountering scenario is emphasized. By utilizing the real-time location information, we propose an optimal adaptive beamforming scheme to maximize the achievable rate region under limited channel source constraint. Numerical simulation indicates that a massive MIMO system with less than a certain positioning error can guarantee a required performance with satisfying transmission efficiency in the high traffic density HST scenario and the achievable rate region when two HSTs encounter is greatly improved as well.

Distributed Averaging With Random Network Graphs and Noises

We consider discrete-time distributed averaging algorithms over multi-agent networks with measurement noises and time-varying random graph flows. Each agent updates its state by relative states between neighbours with both additive and multiplicative measurement noises. The network structure is modeled by time-varying random digraphs, which may be spatially and temporally dependent. By developing difference inequalities of proper stochastic Lyapunov function, the algebraic graph theory and martingale convergence theory, we obtain sufficient conditions for stochastic approximation type algorithms to achieve mean square and almost sure average consensus. We prove that all states of agents converge to a common variable in mean square and almost surely if the graph flow is conditionally balanced and uniformly conditionally jointly connected. The mathematical expectation of the common variable is right the average of initial values, and the upper bound of the mean square steady-state error is given quantitatively related to the weights, the algorithm gain and the energy level of the noises.

Optimal Tracking Performance Limitation of Networked Control Systems with Limited Bandwidth and Additive Colored White Gaussian Noise

This paper studies optimal tracking performance issues for multi-input-multi-output linear time-invariant systems under networked control with limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise channel. The tracking performance is measured by control input energy and the energy of the error signal between the output of the system and the reference signal with respect to a Brownian motion random process. This paper focuses on two kinds of network parameters, the basic network parameter-bandwidth and the additive colored white Gaussian noise, and studies the tracking performance limitation problem. The best attainable tracking performance is obtained, and the impact of limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise of the communication channel on the attainable tracking performance is revealed. It is shown that the optimal tracking performance depends on nonminimum phase zeros, gain at all frequencies and their directions unitary vector of the given plant, as well as the limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise of the communication channel. The simulation results are finally given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Universal quantum gates for photon-atom hybrid systems assisted by bad cavities

We present two deterministic schemes for constructing a CNOT gate and a Toffoli gate on photon-atom and photon-atom-atom hybrid quantum systems assisted by bad cavities, respectively. They are achieved by cavity-assisted photon scattering and work in the intermediate coupling region with bad cavities, which relaxes the difficulty of their implementation in experiment. Also, bad cavities are feasible for fast quantum operations and reading out information. Compared with previous works, our schemes do not need any auxiliary qubits and measurements. Moreover, the schematic setups for these gates are simple, especially that for our Toffoli gate as only a quarter wave packet is used to interact the photon with each of the atoms every time. These atom-cavity systems can be used as the quantum nodes in long-distance quantum communication as their relatively long coherence time is suitable for multi-time operations between the photon and the system. Our calculations show that the average fidelities and efficiencies of our two universal hybrid quantum gates are high with current experimental technology.

Error-rejecting quantum computing with solid-state spins assisted by low-Q optical microcavities

We present an efficient proposal for error-rejecting quantum computing with quantum dots (QD) embedded in single-sided optical microcavities based on the interface between the circularly polarized photon and QDs. An almost unity fidelity of the quantum entangling gate (EG) can be implemented with a detectable error that leads to a recycling EG procedure, which improves further the efficiency of our proposal along with the robustness to the errors involved in imperfect input-output processes. Meanwhile, we discuss the performance of our proposal for the EG on two solid-state spins with currently achieved experiment parameters, showing that it is feasible with current experimental technology. It provides a promising building block for solid-state quantum computing and quantum networks.

Error-detected generation and complete analysis of hyperentangled Bell states for photons assisted by quantum-dot spins in double-sided optical microcavities

We construct an error-detected block, assisted by the quantum-dot spins in double-sided optical microcavities. With this block, we propose three error-detected schemes for the deterministic generation, the complete analysis, and the complete nondestructive analysis of hyperentangled Bell states in both the polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedom of two-photon systems. In these schemes, the errors can be detected, which can improve their fidelities largely, far different from other previous schemes assisted by the interaction between the photon and the quantum-dot-cavity system. Our scheme for the deterministic generation of hyperentangled two-photon systems can be performed by repeat until success. These features make our schemes more useful in high-capacity quantum communication with hyperentanglement in the future.

Optimal Universal Uncertainty Relations

We study universal uncertainty relations and present a method called joint probability distribution diagram to improve the majorization bounds constructed independently in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 230401 (2013)] and [J. Phys. A. 46, 272002 (2013)]. The results give rise to state independent uncertainty relations satisfied by any nonnegative Schur-concave functions. On the other hand, a remarkable recent result of entropic uncertainty relation is the direct-sum majorization relation. In this paper, we illustrate our bounds by showing how they provide a complement to that in [Phys. Rev. A. 89, 052115 (2014)].

Experimental demonstration of graphene plasmons working close to the near-infrared window

Due to strong mode-confinement, long propagation-distance, and unique tunability, graphene plasmons have been widely explored in the mid-infrared and terahertz windows. However, it remains a big challenge to push graphene plasmons to shorter wavelengths in order to integrate graphene plasmon concepts with existing mature technologies in the near-infrared region. We investigate localized graphene plasmons supported by graphene nanodisks and experimentally demonstrated graphene plasmon working at 2 μm with the aid of a fully scalable block copolymer self-assembly method. Our results show a promising way to promote graphene plasmons for both fundamental studies and potential applications in the near-infrared window.

Time-varying formation tracking of multiple manipulators via distributed finite-time control

Comparing with traditional fixed formation for a group of dynamical systems, time-varying formation can produce the following benefits: i) covering the greater part of complex environments; ii) collision avoidance. This paper studies the time-varying formation tracking for multiple manipulator systems (MMSs) under fixed and switching directed graphs with a dynamic leader, whose acceleration cannot change too fast. An explicit mathematical formulation of time-varying formation is developed based on the related practical applications. A class of extended inverse dynamics control algorithms combining with distributed sliding-mode estimators are developed to address the aforementioned problem. By invoking finite-time stability arguments, several novel criteria (including sufficient criteria, necessary and sufficient criteria) for global finite-time stability of MMSs are established. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Can the Subsonic Accretion Model Explain the Spin Period Distribution of Wind-fed X-ray Pulsars?

Neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) generally accrete from the wind matter of their massive companion stars. Recently Shakura et al. (2012) suggested a subsonic accretion model for low-luminosity ($<4\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$), wind-fed X-ray pulsars. To test the feasibility of this model, we investigate the spin period distribution of wind-fed X-ray pulsars with a supergiant companion star, using a population synthesis method. We find that the modeled distribution of supergiant HMXBs in the spin period - orbital period diagram is consistent with observations provided that the winds from the donor stars have relatively low terminal velocities ($\lesssim 1000$ kms$^{-1}$). The measured wind velocities in several supergiant HMXBs seem to favor this viewpoint. The predicted number ratio of wind-fed X-ray pulsars with persistent X-ray luminosities higher and lower than $4\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$ is about $1:10$.

Coordination Over Multi-Agent Networks With Unmeasurable States and Finite-Level Quantization

In this note, the coordination of linear discrete-time multi-agent systems over digital networks is investigated with unmeasurable states in agents' dynamics. The quantized-observer based communication protocols and Certainty Equivalence principle based control protocols are proposed to characterize the inter-agent communication and the cooperative control in an integrative framework. By investigating the structural and asymptotic properties of the equations of stabilization and estimation errors nonlinearly coupled by the finite-level quantization scheme, some necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of such communication and control protocols to ensure the inter-agent state observation and cooperative stabilization. It is shown that these conditions come down to the simultaneous stabilizability and the detectability of the dynamics of agents and the structure of the communication network.

Influence of orbital nematic order on spin responses in Fe-based superconductors

Electronic nematicity is ubiquitous in Fe-based superconductors, but what the primary nematic order is and how the various nematic phenomena correlate with each other are still elusive. In this manuscript we study the physical consequence of the orbital nematic order on the spin correlations. We find that the orbital nematic order can drive a significant spin nematicity and can enhance the integrated intensity of the spin fluctuations. Our study shows that the orbital nematic order has strong effect on the spin correlations and it can not be taken as an unimportant secondary effect of the nematic state in Fe-based superconductors.

Strong entropic uncertainty relations for multiple measurements

In this paper, we study entropic uncertainty relations on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and provide several tighter bounds for multi-measurements, with some of them also valid for Rényi and Tsallis entropies besides the Shannon entropy. We employ majorization theory and actions of the symmetric group to obtain an {\it admixture bound} for entropic uncertainty relations for multi-measurements. Comparisons among all bounds for multi-measurements are shown in figures in our favor.

Position-aided Large-scale MIMO Channel Estimation for High-Speed Railway Communication Systems

We consider channel estimation for high-speed railway communication systems, where both the transmitter and the receiver are equipped with large-scale antenna arrays. It is known that the throughput of conventional training schemes monotonically decreases with the mobility. Assuming that the moving terminal employs a large linear antenna array, this paper proposes a position-aided channel estimation scheme whereby only a portion of the transmit antennas send pilot symbols and the full channel matrix can be well estimated by using these pilots together with the antenna position information based on the joint spatial-temporal correlation. The relationship between mobility and throughput/DoF is established. Furthermore, the optimal selections of transmit power and time interval partition between the training and data phases as well as the antenna size are presented accordingly. Both analytical and simulation results show that the system throughput with the position-aided channel estimator does not deteriorate appreciably as the mobility increases, which is sharply in contrast with the conventional one.

Emergence of massless Dirac quasiparticles in correlated hydrogenated graphene with broken sublattice symmetry

Using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) and the cluster perturbation theory, we study the finite temperature phase diagram of a half-depleted periodic Anderson model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling for a model of graphone, i.e., single-side hydrogenated graphene. The ground state of this model is found to be ferromagnetic (FM) semi-metal. The spin wave dispersion in the FM state is linear in momentum at zero temperature but becomes quadratic at finite temperatures, implying that the FM state is fragile against thermal fluctuations. Indeed, our VCA calculations find that the paramagnetic (PM) state dominates the finite temperature phase diagram. More surprisingly, we find that massless Dirac quasiparticles with the linear energy dispersion emerge at the Fermi energy upon introducing the electron correlation $U$ at the impurity sites in the PM phase. The Dirac Fermi velocity is found to be highly correlated to the quasiparticle weight of the emergent massless Dirac quasiparticles at the Fermi energy and monotonically increases with $U$. These unexpected massless Dirac quasiparticles are also examined with the Hubbard-I approximation and the origin is discussed in terms of the spectral weight redistribution involving a large energy scale of $U$. Considering an effective quasiparticle Hamiltonian which reproduces the single-particle excitations obtained by the Hubbard-I approximation, we argue that the massless Dirac quasiparticles are protected by the electron correlation. Our finding is therefore the first example of the emergence of massless Dirac quasiparticles due to dynamical electron correlations without breaking any spatial symmetry. The experimental implications of our results for graphone as well as a graphene sheet on transition metal substrates are also briefly discussed.

Geometric Global Quantum Discord of Two-qubit States

We consider the geometric global quantum discord (GGQD) of two-qubit systems. By analyzing the symmetry of geometric global quantum discord we give an approach for deriving analytical formulae of the extremum problem which lies at the core of computing the GGQD for arbitrary two-qubit states. Furthermore, formulae of GGQD of arbitrary two-qubit states and some concrete examples are presented.

Heralded quantum repeater for a quantum communication network based on quantum dots embedded in optical microcavities

We propose a heralded quantum repeater protocol based on the general interface between the circularly polarized photon and the quantum dot embedded in a double-sided optical microcavity. Our effective time-bin encoding on photons results in the deterministic faithful entanglement distribution with one optical fiber for the transmission of each photon in our protocol, not two or more. Our efficient parity-check detector implemented with only one input-output process of a single photon as a result of cavity quantum electrodynamics makes the entanglement channel extension and entanglement purification in quantum repeater far more efficient than others, and it has the potential application in fault-tolerant quantum computation as well. Meanwhile, the deviation from a collective-noise channel leads to some phase-flip errors on the nonlocal electron spins shared by the parties and these errors can be depressed by our simplified entanglement purification process. Finally, we discuss the performance of our proposal, concluding that it is feasible with current technology.

Slave rotor theory of the Mott transition in the Hubbard model: a new mean field theory and a new variational wave function

A new mean field theory is proposed for the Mott transition in the Hubbard model based on the slave rotor representation of the electron operator. This theory provides a better description of the role of the long range charge correlation in the Mott insulating state and offers a good estimation of the critical correlation strength for the Mott transition. We have constructed a new variational wave function for the Mott insulating state based on this new slave rotor mean field theory. We find this new variational wave function outperforms the conventional Jastrow type wave function with long range charge correlator in the Mott insulating state. It predicts a continuous Mott transition with non-divergent quasiparticle mass at the transition point. We also show that the commonly used on-site mean field decoupling for the slave rotor corresponds to the Gutzwiller approximation for the Gutzwiller projected wave function with only on-site charge correlator, which can not describe the Mott transition in any finite dimensional system.
