Multiple-Kernel Based Vehicle Tracking Using 3D Deformable Model and Camera Self-Calibration

Tracking of multiple objects is an important application in AI City geared towards solving salient problems related to safety and congestion in an urban environment. Frequent occlusion in traffic surveillance has been a major problem in this research field. In this challenge, we propose a model-based vehicle localization method, which builds a kernel at each patch of the 3D deformable vehicle model and associates them with constraints in 3D space. The proposed method utilizes shape fitness evaluation besides color information to track vehicle objects robustly and efficiently. To build 3D car models in a fully unsupervised manner, we also implement evolutionary camera self-calibration from tracking of walking humans to automatically compute camera parameters. Additionally, the segmented foreground masks which are crucial to 3D modeling and camera self-calibration are adaptively refined by multiple-kernel feedback from tracking. For object detection/classification, the state-of-the-art single shot multibox detector (SSD) is adopted to train and test on the NVIDIA AI City Dataset. To improve the accuracy on categories with only few objects, like bus, bicycle and motorcycle, we also employ the pretrained model from YOLO9000 with multi-scale testing. We combine the results from SSD and YOLO9000 based on ensemble learning. Experiments show that our proposed tracking system outperforms both state-of-the-art of tracking by segmentation and tracking by detection.

Long-distance spin transport in a disordered magnetic insulator

Spin transport through magnetic insulators via magnons has recently been explored for a growing variety of magnetic systems with long-range order and well-understood spin excitation spectra. Here we show dramatic effects of spin transport through an amorphous magnetic insulator, which is both magnetically and structurally disordered. We generate and detect spin flow though amorphous yttrium-iron-garnet ($a$-YIG) thin films in a non-local geometry by use of the spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects in platinum strips separated by 10 or more microns. By comparing non-local spin transport in $a$-YIG on suspended micromachined thermal isolation platforms to the same experiment performed on a bulk substrate, we show strong effects of in-plane thermal gradients on spin transport in the disordered magnetic insulator. The resulting non-local voltage signals are orders of magnitude larger than those seen in crystalline magnetic insulators, with easily measurable spin signals seen even at distances in excess of $100$ microns. In analogy to heat transport, where disordered materials support a range of vibrational excitations that can allow large thermal conductivities, we suggest that efficient spin transport in disordered magnetic systems can occur via a similar spectrum of excitations that relies on strong local exchange interactions and does not require long-range order. This work not only opens a new area for fundamental experimental and theoretical studies of spin transport, but also sets a new direction in materials science for magnonic and spintronic devices.

Patterned growth of crystalline Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ nanostructures with engineered magnetic shape anisotropy

We demonstrate patterned growth of epitaxial yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films using lithographically defined templates on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates. The fabricated YIG nanostructures yield the desired crystallographic orientation, excellent surface morphology, and narrow ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth (~ 4 Oe). Shape-induced magnetic anisotropy is clearly observed in a patterned array of nanobars engineered to exhibit the larger coercivity (40 Oe) compared with that of continuous films. Both hysteresis loop and angle-dependent FMR spectra measurements indicate that the easy axis aligns along the longitudinal direction of the nanobars, with an effective anisotropy field of 195 Oe. Our work overcomes difficulties in patterning YIG thin films and provides an effective means to control their magnetic properties and magnetic bias conditions.

Testing Naturalness

Solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem typically introduce a new symmetry to stabilize the quadratic ultraviolet sensitivity in the self-energy of the Higgs boson. The new symmetry is either broken softly or collectively, as for example in supersymmetric and little Higgs theories. At low energies such theories contain naturalness partners of the Standard Model fields which are responsible for canceling the quadratic divergence in the squared Higgs mass. Post the discovery of any partner-like particles, we propose to test the aforementioned cancellation by measuring relevant Higgs couplings. Using the fermionic top partners in little Higgs theories as an illustration, we construct a simplified model for naturalness and initiate a study on testing naturalness. After electroweak symmetry breaking, naturalness in the top sector requires $a_T = - λ_t^2$ at leading order, where $λ_t$ and $a_T$ are the Higgs couplings to a pair of top quarks and top partners, respectively. Using a multivariate method of Boosted Decision Tree to tag boosted particles in the Standard Model, we show that, with a luminosity of 30 $ab^{-1}$ at a 100 TeV $pp$-collider, naturalness could be tested with a precision of 10 % for a top partner mass up to 2.5 TeV.

Fermionic algebraic quantum spin liquid in an octa-kagome frustrated antiferromagnet

We investigate the ground state and finite-temperature properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an infinite octa-kagome lattice by utilizing state-of-the-art tensor network-based numerical methods. It is shown that the ground state has a vanishing local magnetization and possesses a $1/2$-magnetization plateau with up-down-up-up spin configuration. A quantum phase transition at the critical coupling ratio $J_{d}/J_{t}=0.6$ is found. When $0 0.6$, the system exhibits a gapless excitation, in which the dimer-dimer correlation is found decaying in a power law, while the spin-spin and chiral-chiral correlation functions decay exponentially. At the isotropic point ($J_{d}/J_{t}=1$), we unveil that at low temperature ($T$) the specific heat depends linearly on $T$, and the susceptibility tends to a constant for $T\rightarrow 0$, giving rise to a Wilson ratio around unity, implying that the system under interest is a fermionic algebraic quantum spin liquid.

Simulation and Testing of a Linear Array of Modified Four-Square Feed Antennas for the Tianlai Cylindrical Radio Telescope

A wide bandwidth, dual polarized, modified four-square antenna is presented as a feed antenna for radio astronomical measurements. A linear array of these antennas is used as a line-feed for cylindrical reflectors for Tianlai, a radio interferometer designed for 21~cm intensity mapping. Simulations of the feed antenna beam patterns and scattering parameters are compared to experimental results at multiple frequencies across the 650 - 1420 MHz range. Simulations of the beam patterns of the combined feed array/reflector are presented as well.

A Novel Thiophene-fused Ending Group Enabling an Excellent Small Molecule Acceptor for High-performance Fullerene-free Polymer Solar Cells with 11.8% Efficiency

In this article, we designed and synthesized a novel small molecule acceptor of ITCPTC with thiophene-fused ending group by employing a new active methylene precursor of CPTCN. The ITCPTC based polymer solar cells with PBT1-EH as donor achieved very high PCEs of up to 11.8% with a remarkably enhanced fill factor (FF) of 0.751, a near 20% boost in PCE with respect to the ITIC based control device. These values are among the highest PCEs and FFs for PSCs. In the whole study, we made contrasts with ITIC to understand the reasons of excellent performance of ITCPTC-based PSCs through various measurements, such as GIWAXS and RSoXS. We revealed that the simple modification of ITIC into ITCPTC not only change the material electronic structure, but also mediate the material interactions and crystallization, which contribute together to the excellent performance of ITCPTC based PSCs.

Residual Networks of Residual Networks: Multilevel Residual Networks

A residual-networks family with hundreds or even thousands of layers dominates major image recognition tasks, but building a network by simply stacking residual blocks inevitably limits its optimization ability. This paper proposes a novel residual-network architecture, Residual networks of Residual networks (RoR), to dig the optimization ability of residual networks. RoR substitutes optimizing residual mapping of residual mapping for optimizing original residual mapping. In particular, RoR adds level-wise shortcut connections upon original residual networks to promote the learning capability of residual networks. More importantly, RoR can be applied to various kinds of residual networks (ResNets, Pre-ResNets and WRN) and significantly boost their performance. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of RoR, where it achieves the best performance in all residual-network-like structures. Our RoR-3-WRN58-4+SD models achieve new state-of-the-art results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and SVHN, with test errors 3.77%, 19.73% and 1.59%, respectively. RoR-3 models also achieve state-of-the-art results compared to ResNets on ImageNet data set.

Coulomb Artifacts and Bottomonium Hyperfine Splitting in Lattice NRQCD

We study the role of the lattice artifacts associated with the Coulomb binding effects in the analysis of the heavy quarkonium within lattice NRQCD. We find that a "naive" perturbative matching generates spurious linear Coulomb artifacts, which result in a large systematic error in the lattice predictions for the heavy quarkonium spectrum. This effect is responsible, in particular, for the discrepancy between the recent determinations of the bottomonium hyperfine splitting in the radiatively improved lattice NRQCD [1, 2]. We show that the correct matching procedure which provides full control over discretization errors is based on the asymptotic expansion of the lattice theory about the continuum limit, which gives $M_{Υ(1S)}-M_{η_b(1S)}=52.9\pm 5.5~{\rm MeV}$ [1].

Heavy Higgs Bosons at Low $\tan β$: from the LHC to 100 TeV

We present strategies to search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons decaying to top quark pairs, as often occurs at low $\tan β$ in type II two Higgs doublet models such as the Higgs sector of the MSSM. The resonant production channel is unsatisfactory due to interference with the SM background. We instead propose to utilize same-sign dilepton signatures arising from the production of heavy Higgs bosons in association with one or two top quarks and subsequent decay to a top pair. We find that for heavier neutral Higgs bosons the production in association with one top quark provides greater sensitivity than production in association with two top quarks. We obtain current limits at the LHC using Run I data at 8 TeV and forecast the sensitivity of a dedicated analysis during Run II at 14 TeV. Then we perform a detailed BDT study for the 14 TeV LHC and a future 100 TeV collider.

Echoes of Inflationary First-Order Phase Transitions in the CMB

Cosmological phase transitions (CPTs), such as the Grand Unified Theory (GUT) and the electroweak (EW) ones, play a significant role in both particle physics and cosmology. In this letter, we propose to probe the first-order CPTs, by detecting gravitational waves (GWs) which are generated during the phase transitions through the cosmic microwave background (CMB). If happened around the inflation era, the first-order CPTs may yield low-frequency GWs due to bubble dynamics, leaving imprints on the CMB. In contrast to the nearly scale-invariant primordial GWs caused by vacuum fluctuation, these bubble-generated GWs are scale dependent and have non-trivial B-mode spectra. If decoupled from inflaton, the EWPT during inflation may serve as a probe for the one after reheating where the baryon asymmetry could be generated via EW baryogenesis (EWBG). The CMB thus provides a potential way to test the feasibility of the EWBG, complementary to the collider measurements of Higgs potential and the direct detection of GWs generated during EWPT.

Irreducible tensor basis and general Fierz relations for Bhabha scattering like amplitudes

We construct an irreducible s- and t-channel tensor basis for Bhabha scattering like amplitudes based on the properties of the underlying Lorentz symmetry in four space-time dimensions. In the given basis the calculation of amplitude contractions like the amplitude square reduces to the contraction of their corresponding coefficient tensors. Further the basis retains the full amplitude information and thus can be applied in off-shell cases. The general Fierz transformations which relate the s- and t-channel basis with each other are obtained. As an example for application we use the basis to calculate the tree-level Bhabha scattering amplitude.

Lepton-Flavored Electroweak Baryogenesis

We explore lepton-flavored electroweak baryogenesis, driven by CP-violation in leptonic Yukawa sector, using the $τ-μ$ system in the two Higgs doublet model as an example. This setup generically yields, together with the flavor-changing decay $h\to τμ$, a tree-level Jarlskog-invariant that can drive dynamical generation of baryon asymmetry during a first-order electroweak phase transition and results in CP-violating effect in the decay $h\to ττ$. We find that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated in parameter space compatible with current experimental results for the decays $h\to τμ$, $h\to ττ$ and $τ\rightarrow μγ$, as well as the present bound on the electric dipole moment of the electron. The baryon asymmetry generated is intrinsically correlated with the CP-violating decay $h\to ττ$ and the flavor-changing decay $h\to τμ$, which thus may serve as "smoking guns" to test lepton-flavored electroweak baryogenesis.

Spin ordered ground state and thermodynamic behaviors of the spin-3/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Three different tensor network optimization algorithms are employed to accurately determine the ground state and thermodynamic properties of the spin-3/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We found that the $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ state, rather than the $q = 0$ state, is the ground state of this system, and such an ordered state is melted at any finite temperature, thereby clarifying the existing experimental controversies. A 1/3-magnetization plateau in the magnetic curve is observed, being consistent with the experimental observation. The absence of a zero-magnetization plateau indicates a gapless spin excitation that is further supported by the thermodynamic asymptotic behaviors of the susceptibility and specific heat. At low temperatures, the specific heat is shown to exhibit a $\sqrt{T}$ behavior, and the susceptibility approaches a finite constant as $T\rightarrow 0$. Our TN results of thermodynamic properties are compared with those from high temperature series expansion. In addition, we observe a quantum phase transition between $q = 0$ and $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ states in a spin-3/2 kagome XXZ model at the critical point $Δ_c = 0.408$. This study provides reliable and useful information for further explorations on high spin kagome physics.

Center-focus determination and limit cycles bifurcation for $p:q$ homogeneous weight singular point

The quasi-homogeneous (and in general non-homogeneous) polynomial differential systems have been studied from many different points of view. In this paper, Center-focus determination and limit cycles bifurcation for $p:q$ homogeneous weight singular point are investigated. Some prosperities of Successive function and focus values are discussed, furthermore, the method of computing focal values is given. As an example, center-focus determination and limit cycle bifurcation for $2:3$ homogeneous weight singular point are studied, three or five limit cycles in the neighborhood of origin can be obtained by different perturbations.

Surface state dominated spin-charge current conversion in topological insulator/ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures

We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance-driven spin pumping signals at room temperature in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films -- Bi2Se3 and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 -- deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on yttrium iron garnet thin films. By systematically varying the Bi2Se3 film thickness, we show that the spin-charge conversion efficiency, characterized by the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect length (lambda_IREE), increases dramatically as the film thickness is increased from 2 quintuple layers, saturating above 6 quintuple layers. This suggests a dominant role of surface states in spin and charge interconversion in topological insulator/ferromagnet heterostructures. Our conclusion is further corroborated by studying a series of YIG/(BiSb)2Te3 heterostructures. Finally, we use the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth broadening and the inverse Rashba-Edelstein signals to determine the effective interfacial spin mixing conductance and lambda_IREE.
